    1 of 2 bouldering areas
    Patrick O.

One of the smaller climbing gyms I've been to. It was pretty crowded on a Thursday night. The wait long for top rope routes wasn't too bad, but it always felt like there wasn't much space to move when trying to give active routes some space or stand/sit as you try to map a route before attempting. The 2 bouldering sections are pretty small. There was a musty smell throughout. Overall, an alright place to climb in the peninsula if you don't want to make the trip/drive to other climbing locations in the middle of the week.

This place is awesome. Apparently there's not as many routes as the South Bay location but I think there are still an amazing amount of variety. I'm a BEGINNER beginner (I've only gone a few times in my life) and so I will talk about the V0, V1 beginner routes for bouldering There is one section of the gym that has a lot more V0, V1 beginner routes (the section with the swing). I spent an ample amount of time there! It is $30 for a guest pass but my friend had a membership so she was able to get my friend and I in for free! I came here on a Thursday afternoon and it was not too busy (I didn't have to wait at all for any routes). I'd say the perfect amount of people, definitely gets busier as the post work crew comes around. Parking on the street nearby!

On Belay !! It's climb time baby !!!

Just spent the day with my nearest and dearest friends climbing and learning to Belay at Planet Granite in San Carlos. I have a niece that is destined for greatness. She is this tiny ball of insane energy and she needs to always be active. I wanted to give her a day of excellence for her birthday. I called Planet Granite about 5 days ago and I spoke with Maddie. I asked her hundreds of questions (I'm old school. Screw websites. I like to call and chat ) Maddie was professional and courteous and informative on the phone. She explained everything and answered every question concisely and professionally. She helped me book my classes and rentals ahead of time. The prices and process were fair and simple. Upon arrival. We had completed the orientation video and waivers so it was simple to get our rental gear. Now is the time I should say that. I was 100% newb. I was kinda low key terrified. Edder our instructor was patient , proficient and extremely capable. I've dealt with "professionals" that are condescending or rude or arrogant or just downright insulting. Edder was non of those things. He explained things simply and he used several teaching techniques to ensure that we understood the lessons. In one hour I was comfortable enough to belay my nieces and we spent the better part of three hours climbing. (We climbed until our novice muscles told us to quit.). The facility itself and the rental gear were clean. Everyone was courteous and wearing masks. Covid precautions were on point without nonsense. It felt welcoming and inclusive. I saw a freaking toddler climbing like Spider-Man. I didn't feel judged or feel that I was inferior to anyone while I tried my hand at climbing. I'd call this atmosphere "A very safe and inviting place to try something totally new and confidence building." I highly recommend that anyone who's curious bring a group of friends and try planet granite. It's worth it !! Thanks Maddie for your patience and professional demeanor on the phone. Edder. Thanks for being a true dude and for helping me make my nieces birthday a special day (that we survived !!). Every single staff member I met at PG was super kind and inviting. I made it a point to remember Edder (he da man !) and Maddie because I interacted with them the longest but all the PG staff are great folks.

Equipment: If stuff isn't broken or bent, it just isn't there. I've seen gyms with half the space have more kilos and power bars available. Not to mention they have an entire area dedicated to machines that look like they only get used when the cleaners dust them off. I heard the owners have been promising more stuff, but nothing's come except a small ah set of plates. Facilities: Bathroom was straight up vile with a busted toilet seat. Floors are legit slimy, and I saw maybe two people tops wipe off their equipment. I asked some of the other members if the gym ever brings in a maintenance crew to clean the place down, but they told me the cleaning is done by like a family and kids LMAO Management: Day-to-day is run by this dude named Jostin (Justin?), but outside of my first visit I barely saw the man. Bro is either not at the gym or locked up in the back office. Only time I remember seeing him was when his doordash arrived. The other owners are barely in too, and I heard the main dude isn't even in state anymore??? Cost: Game time. Based on what I've said, guess how much they ask for a month. Two-fn-hundred without a contract, 150 for a 6 month. Place thinks is premium-premium but is giving vibes that make 24 look like Equinox. The members must love burning cash because they could do so much better for much less

The gym itself has lots of older weight training equipment which I prefer to the newer types. The cables run more smoothly, and the machines appear to be built better. I know nothing of the class situation here. The cardio machines are plentiful on the other side: ellipticals, treadmills, stair climbers, stationary bikes and rowing machines. I wish they would the spray bottle back on the wall near the ab area providing three instead of the two on opposites sides of the gym. However, I can't give more than two stars unless management seriously improves equipment maintenance. Several machines have had "Out of Service" stickers on them for at least six months, with no visible progress on repairs. In some cases there are only one or two of those machines in the entire gym, so when one is broken for months, it becomes very inconvenient for members who rely on that equipment. On top of that, some of the existing equipment is clearly aging (frayed cables, worn components, etc.). What makes this more frustrating is that the gym offers a premium membership tier that includes access to the hydro/water massage bed, but that has also been out of service for a long time. Even more concerning, the water fountain and bathroom have both been out of service multiple times. That's a basic facility issue. Members need access to drinking water and restrooms during workouts. Meanwhile, the gym sells bottled water at the counter, which feels especially frustrating when the fountain isn't working. On a few occasions they even had to bring in a porta-potty outside the gym, which says a lot about the state of the building facility. Again, I genuinely want to rate this gym higher because the staff and community are great. If management commits to properly repairing and maintaining the equipment and facilities, I would absolutely be happy to update this review and increase the rating.

I don't know what the health and safety code is for bathrooms in gyms, but I'm pretty sure they are violating it. The bathroom situation is just annoying. There are workout benches that have not been fully operational for 6 months. It's ridiculous. At this point, just buy some new ones... but that's not going to happen. This gym is run by cheapos cutting corners, but I guess that's what I get for $40 a month. Also, as some other reviews have stated, the gym is pretty dusty. They should get a cleanup crew to come in every once in a while and give the gym a deep clean...but they are CHEAPOS!

I've stayed with Planet Fitness for the last six month because I really like it! No gym is perfect, but here's my take on it. The Good: 1. The team that runs it is fabulous! The team is constantly cleaning, and it shows. 3. It's a nice vibe. People always wipe down equipment after they're done. I didn't see that much when I was at 24 Hour Fitness or the Bay Club. 4. The dues are dirt cheap. $30 a month includes the Black Card amenities like massage beds. That said, here's the Bad: 1. No pool or sauna - That's fine for me, but if you like those then this gym isn't for you. 2. No group classes - Not my thing, so I didn't care. 3. No lounge - The place is optimized to get you in, get a workout, and leave. There's no area to socialize or get work done like the Bay Club has. I do miss that. 4. It's small - It's really, really small. Sometimes I do have to wait a couple of minutes for a stair climber (they only have four), and the area around the free weights is pretty packed most of the time. If you're ok with those four things, this is a great gym--nice people, new equipment, clean facilities, and a great price. I highly recommend.
