I was looking for independent movie theaters and discovered the Movie Museum on Yelp. They were showing Hamnet which recently got nominated for - and WON! - a bunch of awards, so decided to check it out. This place is a true hole-in-the-wall theater. The entrance is slightly hidden so it can be hard to spot, the inside is super cozy with only about 16-18 comfy recliners, and you can bring your own blanket to get settled in. It feels very local and intimate. The owner said she's been in business since the 90s. A few things to know: you have to call ahead to make a reservation, tickets are $8 cash only, parking is in a paid lot, and masks are required (or you can buy one there for 50 cents). I think they used to allow outside food, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. It also looks like they've shifted focus--while they used to rent VHS and DVDs, now the movie screenings are the main draw. This place is so weird. The owner is definitely not in it for the money, because it is a bit of a pain to get a seat there. Cash only. I tried to call for tickets a few times with no luck. When I did reach someone they were dealing with "issues" and couldn't help me at the moment and didn't call me back. When I did get thru I could not seem to work out reserving a seat over the phone. Finally, I got to go see a movie about 2 years after this place hit my radar. The room has a bit of a musty smell. The recliners are sticky. You must recline your seat or the person behind you can't see. The experience of buying a ticket is a bit of a hassle. But... It is just $5 for the movie, the a/c is freezing and you can BYO anything. Including the BO. Seems like a lot of regulars go there. Adorable quirky older folks. My type of peeps. Super quaint and old school. You need to make a reservation to see movies here, and they are all off-beat and interesting. It's like stepping back in time and feels like someone's house at the same time. Like an old friend who is a movie buff and has tons of videos and DVDs around their place. The owner is an older gentleman who seems to be in this business purely for the love of cinema. Which I respect! My husband loves this place and That being said, it's not your typical movie experience. It's only $5, cash only. You can bring your own snacks (if they are super quiet!) which is amazing because there are almost no vegan movie snacks in bigger commercial theaters. We brought our hydroflasks and some of our favorite snacks from home and were all set! It really is an experience to go here. I don't see many reviews from regulars here, so I'll add mine. This place is fantastic. They offer great non-mainstream films, foreign films, foreign series, tons of Asian films, classics, and award winners. There is a monthly program detailing info about each film, including awards, actors, directors, and star ratings. You do have to get a seat by reservation only, but it is quite easy. Jaynie, the person who runs day-to-day operations with customers, is a gem of a person. She once called me because she thought I needed a reminder from my previously not showing per scheduled! Yes.....a voice on the phone concerned for me. How refreshing is that? The seating is in reclining loungers, and yes they are old and not so fresh but are very comfortable. I find the theater is cold for me, so I now bring a sweater. It is true, you must recline or the person behind you cannot see. The price? If you are a member it is 5 dollars, $8 if you are not a member. I am guessing the proprietor is not interested in making tons of money (understatement?), rather just interested in the joy and thrill of sharing great cinema with appreciative audiences. Many people are regulars and it can be a little bit of a social event if you want it to be. So you'll see off-beat, BETTER movies here than at a regular cinema, fantastic film, at an extreme bargain price. I love it! read more

This is a great little place to see some wonderful movies. Inexpensive, every seat reclines (note: you must recline so the person behind you can see), mix of films from around the world - some well-known, some obscure - bring your own food and drink from lots of places in or near the shopping center in which it is located. There are a few drawbacks that might be deal-breakers. While the theater itself is accessible (make sure to let them know when you make reservations), the restroom is not. It is located next door and can be reached only by stairs. The screen is large, but don't expect chain-cinema size. There aren't that many seats, so it might be tough when popular movies are being shown. Sometimes it's a challenge to reach them to make a reservation. You can take your chances and walk in without a reservation. Sign up to receive the monthly schedule via email. Parking is in the shopping center pay lot or on the street. I went to a showing here the other week and saw an old Japanese film because a friend asked me to go. ...and let me say, WoW...I didn't know such place existed! It's a small hole in the wall kinda place that has a room filled with big huge comfy chairs. It reclines ALL the way...til you're basically lying down. LoL. You can bring in food, but they don't want you to make a big mess, so make sure it's something "clean". Popcorn is border line. I've been meaning to come here for years and I finally had some free time to join my coworkers and girlfriend over thanksgiving weekend. Why did I wait so long?! I love foreign and independent films; I prefer it so much more than your typical American and predictable ending films. The Movie Museum allows food and drinks in the theater. Movies are $5. I asked if we could rent the theater to have a private screening for Rocky Horror Picture Show and they said better to buy the CD off Amazon and go party at someone's house. Wtf so rude and lame. The only movie theater of its kind. Not only in Hawai'i, but ANYWHERE! This is the type of thing I would do if I was suddenly given a few million dollars with the caveat that I would have to open some type of business whether it is profitable or not...preferably not. I would rent a building, buy about 20 Lay-Z-Boys, get a bling DVD player/projector, and subject an eccentric group of my friends to my choice in obscure and well reviewed movies. Wife and I discovered this place after strolling around Kaimuki after dinner. We ran into Jaynie "Don't Call Me Jane" who pretty much runs the place and talked us into making reservations for a movie we wanted to see the next night. She is quite strict which was much to the ire of some reviewers. Those reviewers need to man up (even though one is a woman). The reason why Jaynie is so strict is to keep the movie going experience optimal. Jaynie is the reservationist, the box officer, the janitor, the projectionist, and the receptionist. She runs a tight ship, and by all means she makes you shut your pie hole during the screening. You can bring your own food and drinks, but just keep it clean. Wife and I went on a double date with my parents being the other date. That means I'm getting old. We saw a great movie...The Grand Budapest Hotel. A good time was had by all. A movie for four with two senior discounts was less than $20. We got a free mango after the movie from Janie's boss' tree who is the eccentric guy who owns this place. Considering it costs $20 just to get butter on your popcorn at Regal or Consolidated, this movie pretty much paid for itself. I think Jaynie was a little hurt when she was compared to the Soup Nazi in one of the reviews. She is just passionate, and eccentric enough to make this obscure theater a success. For those of you who don't like big crowds or don't like throwing down a lot of money for the movies you'll really enjoy this place. The admission fee is $5. I believe it's even cheaper if you're a member. Granted they may not be playing the newest blockbuster releases, at least you can see it on the big screen. Majority of the movies they show here however are foreign films which is a bonus. You don't have to wait around for the HIFF or pay the $14 for those movies either. $5. Yup. You can even rent movies from here, especially the older classics! When you're inside, you get to sit on big reclining chairs in comfort. How often can you do that in the regular theater? You can bring your own food in so you don't have to pay $20 for popcorn and drinks, just make sure you are courtesy enough to clean up after yourself. I know it really sounds like I'm being a cheapskate here but I'm just trying to save you all money. I know a lot of you can't be too happy going to a movie for 2 and spending $40 right?! Cause you know you'll still spend another $40+ on food after the movies.... Movie Museum is a film lover's gem -- definitely not your typical movie venue. This place shows predominantly foreign and indie films, with blockbusters and throwback films occasionally added to the mix. Admission is $5 ($4 for Movie Museum members). The makeshift feel of the screening room is charming, as are the matching large, comfy, red leather recliners that take the place of your run-of-the-mill movie theater seats. I mean, you can legitimately put your feet up without actually having your feet hang off the seat in front of you! Footrests over cupholders, any day. The room is tiered and seats only 19 people at a time, so calling ahead to save your spot would be wise. When I called to make my reservation, the gentleman at the other end was warm and offered directions, even though I already knew where they were located (on Harding Ave, in the same complex that houses Kaimuki Grill and Curves). They don't validate parking, though parking is only a couple of bucks. Unlike your typical movie theater chains, you can actually bring your own food and drink, provided you don't pack them in those noisy, confounded plastic bags! (Yes, that is a rule.) Though I don't know how much everyone else in there will appreciate it.. but what the heck. This is a unique place, it would be a shame to miss out on. Frankly, I don't know why I'm not there several times a month. They describe themselves best, "thoughtful independent, foreign, classic and contemporary films; and extensive video rental collection" Pretty simple. Tip, call ahead! Make sure there are seats, I THINK you can even pay over the phone to ensure you get tickets. Take the time to explore the VHS collection. Half the fun is just seeing how everything is categorized. Sign up for their mailing list to have each months schedule emailed to you so you can plan it out. Another tip: if you missed a certain film on the big screen, they often show choice Hollywood movies that have been recently released on dvd. It's no iMax, but it's better than a 60". Sad I never went here before, but I just never took the time to find it. I finally took the time to find it and it was well worth it. Movies are half the price of the theater, it's BYOB and BYOF if you don't make a mess and a lot of noise. Seats recline way back. I think I might become a regular. Tips: You may want to call ahead for seats. Parking is in paid lot, but it's not that much. If you prefer not to pay arrive early and find street parking near by. Upon entering and asking for a ticket i received a less than favorable reception. First of all, I was told in a very demeaning tone to keep my voice down since there was a movie in progress. i was speaking in a very normal tone, & had no idea there was a movie in progress. My first time at the Movie Museum was about a year ago. My ex wanted to surprise me with a different type of movie experience and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the surprise. Only 14 seats, all seats recline. Reclining is a MUST if you aren't in the back row. You get to bring in your own food and drink, yes alcohol included as well as pillows and blankets to ensure you're comfy. The movies they show here aren't the new mainstream movies playing in the big theaters. The movies here are older of all genres and languages. We watched Archangel staring Daniel Craig, umm, yeah would never have watched it if it wasn't playing that evening. You know what, I liked the movie a lot! The owner is a nice guy, my ex told me his history, but I can't remember the entire story, so I'll spare you any mistaken information. Keep in mind you will be deceived when you walk in and wonder if you're in the right place with the very tight and disorderly "lobby" but you are definitely there if you are that confused. This is my favorite movie theater! And I'm from New York, where there are plenty of bigger, more sparkly movie theaters. What I like about this one is that it is so unique: It's a small theater, with ~20 seats in the back of a video store. But all the seats are lazy boy recliners, and you can bring beer and snacks to enjoy during the films. (Please don't bring anything noisy....like potato chips....you'll figure it out.) The movies cover a wide range to include old, foreign, indie, and mainstream movies. In the end there is going to be something for everyone. The owner is awesome, and is open to hearing your suggestions, though, he runs a business and cannot show films that aren't going to sell. This place is an absolute gem. A diamond in the rough! Let me start off by saying that I love me a good movie. One that draws me in emotionally. Makes me root for the protagonist. Makes me cringe and laugh and tear. Now let me say that the handpicked movies I've seen here are some of the best movies I've ever seen. Movies from Turkey, Ireland, Russia, Japan... I mean, you name it! Really! (They also show domestic films, btw, but only those that are well-rated) And their movies are all hits at the major international film festivals, taking home awards galore and receiving nomination after nomination. What I absolutely LOVE is that it's like a local mom 'n pop place, run by a couple who are obviously quite passionate about movies, but moreso their customers. I joined their mailing list, and they email me monthly, with the following month's movie schedule, complete with the rating, synopsis, actors, country, and awards/nominations the movie has received. It's all reserved seating, so I like to be the first to call and reserve the best seats in the house (They're all super duper comfy Lazy Boys though). And I only choose the 3 1/2 or 4 star movies :) I really recommend this place as an off-the-beaten-path alternative to the big dazzling theaters. It's quaint and cute and kind of like home. The Movie Museum is a hidden gem in Kaimuki. It works like this: they play films that are recently released on DVD or laserdisc, and some are foreign gems that are very difficult to find. You call and make reservations, then show up, pay $5, and sit in a leather armchair while eating/drinking whatever you brought with you. Yes, they do allow alcohol! Some of the films I've seen there include: Kieslowski's "Red", the extended edition of "Donnie Darko", a crazy French short from the 50's with pornographic scenes, and "49 Up", the latest documentary from Michael Apted. If you're looking for a cozy place to watch an older movie where you can bring your own food and drink - this is the place to go! Of course, make reservations in advance if you're going to see a movie here because there are only about 19 seats, in 1 theater. They make you put the leather recliners back one notch to watch the movie, otherwise short people like me can't see the screen. It was slightly uncomfortable because I couldn't reach the ground when the footrest was up - so the ground was much more untouchable when the chair was pushed back. AND if you sat up, the chair suddenly popped up straight - which worried me because I had a cup of wine between my legs. Yes, no cup holders. The bathroom is located up stairs. You need to ask for a key - hehe, there were two keys on the ring. One to open the door to the stair case that leads to the restroom, and one for the actual restroom. Didn't look like there was any wheel chair accessibility. 4-stars because it was only $5 for a non-member, cozy (if you like that sort of thing), and you could bring your own food and alcohol. read more

Reservations recommended ! I really like the concept of the Movie Museum. There are comfy recliners in a theater that holds about 30-35 people. The theater features one or two movies a day, and different movies throughout the week. Some of the films are much older, some are recently released, and some are foreign. A 19 seat movie theater?! It doesn't get much more intimate than this. Good for a date...just make sure your date is ok with this kind of place. When we called to reserve about 2 weeks in advance we had to assure the nice lady that we would show up. Perhaps if you don't show you get put on their black list or something. We arrived about 5 minutes prior to show time & the host checked a hand-written list for our name...he read our names...first & last. We paid our $5 admission then were seated by our gracious host. It wasn't packed. Maybe there were no-shows. Bastards! We found out this place is BYOB because this dude behind us dropped his half-liter sparkling wine bottle on the floor & made the room smell like wine. The reclining seats are luxurious...slightly worn on some, but overall comfortable. Although we sat right next to each other, the seats including the arms are wide like typical recliners so it seemed like we were far away from each other. Love seats or couches would be nice, but that's just us. The screen is nice & big for the room, but the sound comes from simple 2-channel stereo speakers above the top corners of the screen. And although you DO notice the sound quality (or lack thereof) you forget all about it soon after the movie begins. Great place to see a movie, especially since bigger theaters will run you about $10 a person. BYOB is a BIG plus! Just don't get stupid there. It isn't that kind of place. This is one of the things I miss the most about Hawaii.. Fantastic movies, comfy seating, amazing aunties & uncles working there, just all around great for anyone who likes independent, alternative, or otherwise quirky films. They show everything from serious to silly, documentaries, & foreign films.. you name it. -Def recommend checking out the movie schedule before hand & making reservations. Some of the movies shown are really rare too! It's a great treat. I discovered one of my favorite movies here, Kamome Shokudo. I'm glad I got to see it in such a comfortable setting & for cheap! I tried to find the dvd years later & it was going around 50-80 bucks! & would only play in region 2 (aka japanese) dvd players. Just another one of the many reasons I feel lucky to have discovered Movie Museum when I did. Whenever I go back home, I always stop here. Old-older flicks u can see on tv or rent on netflix, etc. way too many foreign films (apprx 80-90%) if u like reading sub-titles for 2-3 hrs), must be a member to get discounts n/or rent movies....this place stinks, dirty w/food, drink, BYOB Bottles, booze, etc on floor, no free or validated parking (a pay-lot), not to mention the man/owner "Dwight" can b very very rude, offense, "high-pressure" (n no-matter when u call 4 reserv/info he always uses/says "selling-out/only a few seats left" -line which most of the time is b.s), w/a "take-it- or leave-it" attitude w/his often snide-remarks, up-tight, petty, w/a "know-it all, dont/who cares attitude...n this is when he's sober from?! I been told be many that he comes from a (the silverspoon-wealthy BIG-5 family/owner's son) n uses this biz as a non-profit "front" for other biz n a tax write-off!? not good/safe for children/friendly place! Also, w/only 16 chairs/seating capacity w/only 1 rear/main fire-entry/exit door w/people crammed-in like sardines sitting/blocking aisles it' could be a serious "fire-hazzard/death/accident-trap" waiting 2 happen, n maybe should be condemned by the Fire Dept....scarey! I sit back in my reserved easy chair and travel the world and fall in love again and again through the A-list of exceptional, acclaimed independent and foreign films. The employees here are like family to me. They call me when there's a movie they think I will like. If you are intelligent, wordly, romantic or like alternative cinema, this is your home. Cool little place. Came here for my first time after reading about it on yelp. There are actually full size leather reclining seats! How sweet is that?! Make sure you reserve ahead of hand though, seats are sold out fast. Unfortunately for us, that was the case... but luckily there were chairs set up along the aisle so we didn't have to stand the entire movie. This is a pretty cool place. It's BYOE (bring your own everything) so my friend and I brought JJ Dolan pizza and beer. It was fantastic. When you come here you will need to pay to park which is fine. It's hard to find and honestly I can't even remember where this location is or how to get in. The concept is cool. You pay $5 to watch an older movie and eat and drink whatever you want. Plus they have these awesome recliners I wanted to sleep in it. If you are going look up the schedule because it fills up fast. I just moved to Hawaii literally a week ago and I was so nervous I wasn't going to be able to find the cute and sometimes odd little businesses that I loved so much in Phoenix. $5.00 for a movie. You really can't beat that price and you can bring in your own food and drinks! Sounds like a dream. They play mostly foreign films and some independent films. I went and saw Ruby Sparks which was awesome. I do wish they could offer just a few more movies with less subtitles, but maybe i just ought to catch some more foreign flicks. I made a reservation the day off and I recommend making them beforehand and you just pay at the door. They also rent out movies if you're a member. Who would have thought that tucked in-between a lone tux shop and offices would be an intimate living room/home theater set up, with leather reclining chairs, and cheap ($5) admission?! I am now a proud, card-carrying member! 18 leather recliners, air conditioning, great selection of foreign and indie films, and bonus: you can bring your own food and drink. Note: just please be courteous and clean up after yourself, and try not to bring pungent smelling foods! It's limited seating (18 loungers) so as you can imagine it's best to call and reserve a seat ahead of time. And yes, when you enter you should lower your voice a tad to respect moviegoers (only a curtain separates front desk/ticket counter from the "theatre"). Great way to surprise friends without them having any idea what you're planning. I took the bf here for a surprise date he could not figure out what we were doing. Picked up food on the way yummy sandwiches and some drinks. He thought we were going to a picnic and became extremely confused when we parked in front of Curves. It is completely unassuming. I've been in the parking lot dozens of times and never noticed it. The entrance is just to the left of Curves partially hidden by a low wall. Cost - $ 5 bucks per person ( cash) Atmosphere - clean and comfortable the space is small but meant for a nice quiet sort of enjoyment of off the beaten path movies. Kids - It probably depends on the movie I went to see a foreign drama/comedy so the crowd was older adults there that looked serious about their movie experience. not a great situation for fidgety little ones. Drinks - I brought my own next time I'll bring something with a sealing lid there is no cup holders so i was constantly worried I would accidentally kick over my drink Food - whatever you like yay!, there was on guy that brought a bag of chips that made a lot of noise. so I suggest not bringing anything noisy. and it is also a very small space so smells permeate. It wasn't bad but I could definitely catch the light scents of everyone else's snacks. so I would advise no strong smelling foods. Bathrooms - I didn't check them but heard they were outside upstairs and you'll need a key so... use your head your going to a movie go before hand. Parking - $ bring some cash its not too steep though ***Make sure to call ahead for reservations the movie I really wanted to see was full up so I had to go with my second choice. read more
