    Grilled fish tacos
    Connie C.

Moxie's is a go-to whenever I'm home. This restaurant serves American, Chinese, Mexican, Japanese-infused menu items. You can order items such as seared ahi tuna salads or chipotle chicken quesadillas. This restaurant has a very classy, upscale look to it and prices reflect the upscale motif. Dishes usually run about $15-25 a piece. The fish tacos weren't amazing but they were satisfying. The grilled halibut had a nice seasoning and the coleslaw relish did compliment the fish. There was added guacamole that enhanced the tacos. Other items I am a fan of at this restaurant are: med bread, chicken souvlaki and clubhouse sandwich. Service is always great and they're really on top of refills!

Excellent service and vibrant atmosphere. I'd recommend the tenderloin with demi glaze. or the chicken and ribs.

I went here with a friend a couple weeks ago, as I was saying about how I wanted to try authentic Italian food. This place is an institution that's been around for over 20 years. It's not extremely upscale, but it's a comfortable dining environment. I went with the carbonara after I saw the ingredients in it. An authentic carbonara consists of spaghetti or linguine, guanciale, eggs, and a special kind of cheese. No cream, no milk, no garlic, no onions. This was exactly what I got with this carbonara, so I can confirm it's 100% authentic Italian. It was absolutely delicious, and the prices are very affordable for the quality and authenticity you get. I added a lemon meringue cheesecake. Pretty good, loved the design especially. Given the combined total of under $40 including tax and tips, this is very reasonable for an Italian dinner. Service is excellent. I'll definitely return.

In 2004 I was 12 and on a school trip. We waited 2 hours for our food, which I remember because ADHD 12yos keep track of things like that. When it eventually came, I thought, "This spaghetti is bad," which I'd never thought about spaghetti before in my young life. I rarely think it, even now, about any food. I can eat notoriously bad meals. For a while in my 20s I regularly ate chickpeas with mayonnaise, because I just needed FUEL. I also thought, "This spaghetti is cold," which made sense since the spaghetti and I had waited so long to unite. My 2nd visit to the Pony Corral was yesterday, and it was bad vibes off the hop. The hostess asked me to take off my "backpack," a satchel that is not so much what you imagine when you think "backpack," but rather one of those teeny wimpy girlbags with silly little shoulder straps, that we all started wearing for fashion but found it was more convenient than a purse and easier on our back problems as we became Old. Purse-like, mine held such small feminine essentials as my wallet, phone, Kleenex, lip balm, and an instrument cable which, in all fairness, I could have used to attempt to strangle another customer had I really wanted to (the attempt would have been unsuccessful, as I am small and weak). I was told to go out and leave my bag in the car, despite having come in out of a blizzard, and with no concern for the fact that I might have valuables that I carry on my person because that is literally what women/people do with their valuable things in their little bags. What restaurant asks people to leave their bags in the car? I've been asked at stores to leave a large backpack behind the counter, which I'm fine with, because people probably steal expensive things from those stores in large backpacks. What am I going to steal at Pony Corral? I don't even want to take MY OWN LEFTOVERS home from Pony Corral, never mind anything else. Pony Corral, you caught me on the wrong day. It was 11:30 a.m. and I had woken up early to play music at my dear grandfather's funeral, and I couldn't scoff at your absurd rule-that-no-other-restaurant-has and walk back into the blizzard and find somewhere else to eat, because my entire extended family was already sitting waiting to order some bland, bland food. Is it possible you thought I was smuggling alcohol inside in my teeny tiny backpack, at 11:30 a.m. on a weekday? Because I was very, very sad, and that might be a reasonable thing to suspect if you had known that fact about me, which you didn't. I would even have opened my teeny backpack and displayed its tragic dearth of alcohol or Pony-Corral-silverware, and explained that the cable was not for strangling customers using my tiny noodle arms but for plugging in my guitar to play sad music at my grandfather's funeral. I know, I know: a woman should not get special treatment just because it's her 93yo grandfather's funeral. But is it "special treatment" for a person not to have to walk into a fcking blizzard to stash their purse with their wallet and phone and kleenex and lip balm so they can enjoy 2 hours (plus the time it took to eat, haha jk) with their family, consuming the most tasteless yam fries they have ever experienced with a dip that approximates salad dressing? To be clear, I know this rule wasn't invented by the hostess enforcing it, and that gently questioning her (which I did) was not going to change the stupid policy, and being a smartass about it (which I barely did) was not going to enlighten her to its ludicrousness, and yelling at her (which I did not do) was not going to bring back my dead grandfather. Which is why I went back into the blizzard and left my little bag in the car. Notes: 1. My cousin found a "short and curly" (her words) in her coleslaw. Of course all hair is beautiful no matter what body part it originates from, but this might be the one context in which it's acceptable to discriminate in favour of "tall and straight." 2. Another cousin received a ham omelette, and when he explained that he doesn't eat pork and had ordered corned beef, was told, "yes they are the same" and had to debate about it until the manager came and apologized. 3. Another cousin brought a larger bag, big enough to fit his laptop, and was not harassed about it, and I'm sure it's not because unlike me he's tall and straight, but one can't help but notice these things. One stars. The star is because the staff were mostly nice and if they seemed glum I don't blame them, it's not their fault they work at the stupid Pony Corral.

I had a gift card to use at any The Keg Steakhouse and Bar. I decided that I'd use it on my birthday and treat myself to a quality dinner. Last year, I was in the area and had two steakhouse choices. I went with Mr Mikes. This year, I chose The Keg. This location is the only one out of the bunch in Winnipeg that I had yet to visit. I came here after taking in a matinee movie at the Cineplex nearby. It was just before 6 pm. I drove over here and found parking in a vast parking lot. It was busy. I walked in. I was immediately greeted by a female staffer. I was looking for a table for one. She said that there was bar seating. No wait. Perfect! I selected a seat that faced the screen with the Argentina - Cape Verde FIFA World Cup game that was about to start. Nice! The lobster summer menu looked so good. However, I had my heart set on a prime rib dinner. I stuck with my original plan. I got the nicest bartender who took my order: - Diet Pepsi - Classic prime rib meal: - Mixed greens with mustard vinaigrette - Ten-ounce prime rib (medium) with au jus, crispy onions, mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, and horseradish - Caesar brussels sprouts My Diet Pepsi came out first. It was cold and refreshing. I would get a refill later on. A couple sat next to me. They were probably in their sixties. The man said hi to me. I reciprocated. They talked about fishing and how they used to live in Ontario with one of the bartenders. They were clearly regulars at this establishment, as they ended up chatting with at least two other bartenders. My food had arrived. Three plates. It look like I hadn't eaten in years! The couple looked at everything that I had. The man: You deserve the Order of Manitoba if you can finish everything. Me: It's my birthday and I plan on enjoying everything. I am normally not that bold to state that it's my birthday. I was looking forward to this meal, I would eventually polish off all three plates of food because I was hungry and I had wanted this meal. I started with the mixed greens with mustard vinaigrette. Everything was so crisp and fresh. The pickled onions gave a nice contrast to the plump tomatoes, yummy cucumbers, and fresh mixed greens. The mustard vinaigrette was excellent. Every bite had the perfect amount of it. I loved the prime rib. It was medium. Tender. Yummy. The au jus was perfect. Every morsel got dunked in it. The crispy onions looked like a lot. However, enjoying them with the mashed potatoes and au jus was the perfect amount. The mashed potatoes were comforting. I liked that the skin was left on the taters before they got mashed. The caesar brussels sprouts were outstanding. It tasted like a caesar salad with the best creamy dressing, buttery croutons, and a lemon wedge to squeeze over everything. The brussels sprouts were roasted to perfection and were scrumptious. I want to recreate this side. During my meal, the man said to the bartender that I could buy any drink, as it was my birthday and he was treating. It was such a sweet gesture. I was not expecting it. I got a mojito. Moments later, it appeared in front of me. I thanked the couple for making my dinner extra special. They wished me a happy birthday and we clinked glasses. The mojito was so good. I love any drink with lime and mint. It was wonderful. I stayed to watch the entire FIFA game. Argentina won in extra time. I presented my gift card to my bartender. I had printed it out, as it was a digital one. I said to use it all, which would include the tip. Done! I thanked the couple again for their kind gesture and for making my day so special. They were so gracious and wished me a happy birthday again and a good evening. I headed to the women's washroom before making tracks back to Steinbach. Another benefit sitting by the bar is that the washrooms are a few steps away. The women's washroom felt fancy. The stall that I used was clean. No complaints. I had an exceptional experience here. Great food and drinks. It helped that there were friendly folks at the bar and excellent bartenders who made my birthday a memorable one. (302)

I had thought about going to The Keg for dinner. However, I wasn't feeling like spending a ton of money for a single meal, as yummy as any steak at this eatery is. I had just finished seeing a great movie at the Cineplex on McGillivray. I was ready for dinner. It was my birthday. The Keg was fairly close. I did a search for other steakhouses. I found Mr Mikes. It was new to me. I headed over to it. Mr Mikes wasn't difficult to find. It was a three-minute drive from Cineplex. It's located in a plaza across from Starbucks. I backed into an available parking spot and walked in. It didn't take long for a staffer to greet me. She asked me if I wanted a booth or a table. I went with the former and got a comfy one. Summer was my server. Summer in Winnipeg with Summer. Cool! I ordered water and a Diet Coke to start. Service was impeccable, as another staffer came by a few minutes later to ask if I needed anything. Mr Mikes is a franchise that hails from Vancouver. It was started by a couple of guys in Vancouver whose first name isn't Mike. I don't know the story behind the name. Anyway, like Earls, Mr Mikes has made its way eastbound. This location is the only one in Winnipeg. There are currently three locations in southwestern Ontario. The one in Kitchener is new. I'll need to visit it when I'm back in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Mr Mikes is big on steaks and burgers. The dining experience was casual and laidback. I got these items: - Oscars sirloin lobster - Diet Coke The oscars sirloin lobster is the most bang for your buck. It features a seven-ounce sirloin with lobster and seafood on top, along with hollandaise. It comes with onion rings, veggies, and garlic mashed potatoes. This meal screamed my name. I got the sirloin medium-well. I drank my water and Diet Coke. Both were cold and refreshing. I got another Diet Coke refill during my visit. My food didn't take long to arrive. It was impressive considering that it was roughly 6:30 pm on a Thursday evening. I never know what to expect when the description says that veggies are a side. Would they be gross, like mushy squash? Nope! I got the most delicate asparagus. Yay! I will say that the sirloin was a bit difficult to cut through. I don't know if it was actually the meat or my knife. It was still yummy and seasoned well. I loved everything else. The lobster and seafood on top was delicious. This place didn't skimp on the seafood. There were lumps on lobster and shrimp. Excellent! The garlic mashed potatoes were comforting. They weren't super garlicky, but you knew that the garlic was there. I loved the asparagus. It was easy to cut and eat. They were lightly salted and cooked perfectly. The onion rings were enjoyable. They were crispy on the outside. The onion's natural sweetness came through each ring. The only downside was being asked how everything was tasting with a mouthful of food. It happens more to me in Winnipeg, which is something I don't miss. The question could have been timed better. It doesn't take much to look at someone's jaw to determine whether chewing is occurring. If the customer is chewing, maybe ask the question later if you're dying to know. Summer asked whether I had room for dessert after I had polished off my main. I didn't. This meal was filling and satisfying. I asked for the bill. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and tipped. Done! I used the washroom before I started my drive back to Steinbach. The women's washroom simply had She on the door with red lips. Cool! The washroom stall that I used was clean. The entire washroom was nicely maintained. I liked some of the images on the wall as I headed out the door: - Some of my best friends are vegan - Bad spellers of the world untie - I licked it so it's mine All relatable. Super fun and funny! I had a wonderful dinner here. Prices are decent and the food was yummy. (287)
