If you need any kind of work on your fireplace or chimney, this is THE ONLY company you should go to!!! This is a real specialty field, your general contractor typically will not go near this kind of work, you need a specialist. In my case, the damper for my fireplace was all rusted out and no longer functional. I messaged Mr. Chimney through the website over a weekend and got a quick response phone call on a Sunday from owner Howie Martin. He was 100% professional and told me I would hear from his office on Monday and sure enough I did. Scheduled a date and time for an estimate, gentleman came to the house, inspected the fireplace and flue and gave me a free estimate for replacing the damper, sealing the smoke chamber (old cement was crumbling), free cleaning. I also wanted a nice copper rain cap for the top of the chimney. Got a fair price for all the work. The workmen performed all work neatly and cleanly, they were very careful to protect my living room floors etc from any soot. The new damper is custom fit and works beautifully, very solid and reliable. The best part is my brand new copper rain cap on top of my chimney, keeps rain and elements out of the flue and looks GREAT. I now have the best (copper) chimney rain cap in the neighborhood! Mr. Chimney is a fairly large operation, multiple offices and many trucks and workmen in the company, not a fly by night operation. I hired this company to clean a fireplace insert and chimney for $150. I was shocked at the problems that we had and the lack of response from this company. I had hired this company 2 years ago to clean my chimney and found them good to work with. But I am suspecting there has been a change of ownership because my renter reported that little time was spent on the job and then the insert was malfunctioning after the service. Very disappointed. It's not often I ever write a review, but I feel compelled to do so. I've been a homeowner in Westchester, NY for 15 years and have had my chimney cleaned every two-years or every year based on usage. After reading reviews here I decided to try Mr. Chimney. They cleaned my fireplace and flue, but wouldn't go to the basement to clean out the catch basin; nor would they climb onto the roof to clean the creosote at the top of the chimney. The owner looked towards my roof and with a 2-second glance pronounced that my cap is okay! WOW what a great inspection. They took their money and ran. A complete rip-off. Never had a chimney cleaning company do such a limited clean-up. I would never call these folks again. read more

I can't speak for their actual chimney service because we never got that far. But I can say that when I called them, the woman who answered the phone put me on hold for several minutes TWICE only to get back to rudely tell me that they can only schedule three weeks out, that the service takes "5 to 15" minutes (everyone else said at least half an hour), so they must be overbooking and not doing very much. She also quoted a price for cleaning that was double everyone else. Once she put me on hold again and another several minutes passed, I just hung up. Don't waste your time or money on a company who's first line of customer service is awful. read more

If I could give Mr. Chimney 100 stars for their extraordinary level of service, expertise, and quick response, I would. No hesitation. Early January, we woke up to a disaster in our attic and my second floor office. My first call was to our boiler maintenance service to see if the water damage somehow came from there. They checked and said to call Mr. Chimney right away because it appeared at that time to be a chimney/ possible carbon monoxide problem. I called, and Tim quickly came to assess the situation. While he was checking out the chimney, the bricks fell in. He explained what happened and why, told me his men could get there that afternoon to install a metal sleeve, and showed me a very fair and reasonable quote. By 8PM that evening, the amazing team fixed the chimney (no more worries about carbon monoxide poisoning), cleaned up the bricks and all debris, and it's now up to code, plus they put in an opening so we can easily keep it clean. But the story doesn't end there. Two weeks later, the opening they installed leaked and a plume of steam has been flowing from the chimney. Tim came back to check it out and make sure everything they installed was working properly. He stayed and tested until he knew for sure what was going on. Turns out, the chimney's now working great; it was the boiler after all. Having recently moved into the house, we had no idea the chimney hadn't been cleaned in 40 years and wasn't up to code. Eventually, it would have been a problem, boiler or not. We're just so grateful to Tim and the Mr. Chimney team for their quality work and providing us peace of mind. Highly recommend! read more

I actually just signed up for a Yelp account just so I can rate this company. They came to my house clean my Chimney a few weeks ago and told my wife that our chimney had so much creosote they would have to use a special drill to clean it. Instead of the regular clean which I think is between $100 and $150, it would cost $800 just for the cleaning. Add in a few other things we "needed to do" in the name of safety and it quickly rose to over $1,000. The technician also told my wife that if it was his house, unless we got it cleaned using this special drill, he would only use the fireplace if we had a fire extinguisher ready as there was a good chance we could burn down our house. Call me crazy, but this seemed extreme, so I had not one, but two additional companies come to our house to check it out. As you might be able to guess, neither one found creosote and my house is still standing. Do yourself a favor and avoid these guys at all cost. I really wanted to go with them as I like supporting local businesses whenever possible, but the way they tried to scare us into paying WAY too much is not cool. I might not know about Chimney's, but I know BS when I see it. read more

Well, here is my update on Mr. Chimney. I finally after over a year got someone to come out and fix my fireplace. They were so nice and called the company to get the serial number that Mr. Chimney could not provide. They also fixed all the logs that Mr. Chimney installed incorrectly. Ordered the part and now it is working. Cost me another $500 to fix but at least I did not have to rely on Mr. Chimney to help. BECAUSE THEY ARE NO HELP WHAT SO EVER. Better check to see if they are insured. We had bought a house with a fireplace and wanted to get the chimneys inspected so we could take comfort knowing its safe to have a fire. Although we scheduled an appointment, the guys were several hours late. We werent informed on what type of inspection should be performed so make sure you ask if you need a Level 1 2 or 3 inspection. These guys merely looked up the chimney from the bottom only and passed them. They asked ambiguous questions, like how often do you plan to use your chimney. One wonders if you have to ask that, is there something that needs to be fixed? Well it turns out, we had a chimney fire, suffered significant damage, and now get to deal with insurance and rebuild. Found out they weren't insured at the time. Buyer beware. read more

You may wonder why I chose four stars rather than five--- this is nota reflection of the service which was rendered but rather because the work was done a few days ago and I still haven't had the opportunity to light up my wood burning fireplace so... I am reserving final judgement for after I do so. In any case... I found mr. Chimney on line thru Angie's list. A service I have used in the past and was singularly unhappy w/ their recommendation after storm sandy when I needed to replace my four year old roof --- again --- to the tune of 22k. However, this time their recommendation was on target. I called, mr. Chimney responded, Susan set up the app't and behold--- the work was done. I especially want to commend Junior and Juan which actually came to do the work. They were courteous, thoughtful (I.e., they called me because they were going to be late), efficient in protecting my living room which had just been painted and had refinished floors... Suffice it to say that with workers like that I believe that mr. Chimney will continue to thrive for a long time. So... When I finally test my fireplace I expect that the four stars will become five. Hired these guys for asbestos removal. Terrible idea. On their first attempt, they only removed asbestos that was readily visible, leaving a bunch on the pipes that were out of view. After complaining that the job was incomplete, they came back and did a little bit more, but left a bunch of asbestos residue and dust in the work area. Still, the work wasn't complete, with asbestos readily visible on the pipes in the basement and crawlspace. When I called again, the owner calls back belligerent, stating that his workers have 15 years of experience and would never do what I was describing. That they had assured him that the job was complete, and that I must be mistaken. After demanding that someone come and inspect the area again, they of course found plenty of asbestos still exposed. They then completed the job, but never got around to cleaning up the asbestos residue and dust that was left in the work area. The owner then apologized for his "attitude" and offered a whopping 4% discount on the job. Great. They may be OK for chimneys, but unless you're eager to be exposed to asbestos residue and dust and like to be accused of lying, I would look elsewhere for asbestos removal. read more

They recently came to clean my chimney. 2 guys were there, one couldn't speak English. The supervisor said he wouldn't burn a fire with this chimney. He didn't really elaborate, didn't ask if I wanted to see specifics by looking up the chimney with a light. Told me it would be $2400 for a liner and $800 to re-point the firebox. There is no doubt the chimney is older, but he was not thorough in the least bit, didn't explain why he felt I need a liner, or offer to point out anything. A few days later I received an estimate in the mail for $2400 plus $1600 with some shiny marketing materials - it was a few dollars to send this. No thanks, I will be getting a second opinion, and will work with a more professional company. A company that inspects the chimney from the ground and above, points out why repairs are needed, and communicates with clients like professionals. Seems they are looking to make a quick dollar, or in this case $4200. read more
