Agree with what others have said about Mr Cool. The outdoor cooling fan on our Rheem unit quit working. Called around and couldn't get beyond an appointment setter. Found Mr Cool on yelp, read the reviews and found out that he gave no BS advice on the phone. Gave him a call and that is exactly what I got. He quickly identified the problem and told me what to look for - on the phone! He said to try it myself, and if I couldn't do it then he could come out and do it for me next day. Tried it out and it was exactly what he said - the capacitor. Changed it out and I was back in the cool. It was good to know that I could depend on him in case it didn't work out. Well, Yelp fans, I just had to write this while it's fresh. It's my followup epic saga that I promised. Brian and his crew started the project at the perfect time this morning 2/22/13. Mama bear was still asleep when they started unloading and was completely awake with a latte' under her belt and milling about the cave by the time the noisier work started. When mama's happy, EVERYBODY'S happy! Let me say that Brian and his crew got the job done in very short order. My furnace, condenser and and coil were all replaced with an American Standard Platinum 16SEER 13EER variable speed split system. The outdoor unit is tall, but attractive and VERY quiet not to mention it puts out a ton of air. Brian and his crew added a short run of new duct work and made sure each room was balanced(something that our original builders should have done 13 years ago, but didn't). The furnace is barely audible when running at stage 1. The AC is almost the same at Stage 1. Quietest system on the market I'd wager is the American Standard 2 Stage Platinum. The two speed system is something I think I won't regret paying a little more for in the long run. Rather than go all the way with a new dedicated air return in the master bedroom, we just cut 3/8's off the bottom of the bedroom door. I'd say the amount of return air we are getting now basically tripled with this small amount of material taken off the door. Let me say Brian is pretty darn steady with a circular saw. The cut on the bottom of the door was PERFECT. He rehung the door and that was a MUCH simpler AND less costly solution. This was our solution to the hot spot issue in the master BR rather than installing an active dedicated air return for it. Nice innovative move it was. Not trying to sell you as a light carpenter to the people Brian, but your on the fly work in that category was pretty impressive on this project. When July rolls around, we'll likely see the dividends being paid with that minor alteration to the door for added airflow. That wasn't the end of the extra mile Brian was willing to go for us. After playing "Harry Houdini" and wiggling through an opening not much bigger than a port hole on the SS Minnow in his initial consult, he decided it would be "cool" to cut a more beneficial attic access in our closet. That's exactly what he and his crew did with the same prowess they displayed on the HVAC install itself. C 'est magnifique, it was. So skillful was the carpentry that I decided to award him a new saw blade and a set of four walkie talkies as a bonus; not that he ever asked for one extra dime or special favor for going that extra mile. Brian also installed a dampering system so that we can adjust the amount of airflow going to the different rooms from the attic. Another much appreciated and innovative move. We probably need one more damper for our son's room and he recognized that right away when we did the walk through after the install. He offered to come out early next week and install it and bring in a case of Joe Fly Filters which he also threw in and was covered by the bid price. How freakin' stellar is that?! We are doing a bunch of stuff to our house and other people were in and out and Brian and his crew just went about their business and remained very focused in spite of the added traffic.. So quiet were he and his crew, it was as if nothing was happening, but, oh how it was. I left the house several times with just Brian and his crew there and no one else and perfectly comfortable in so doing. I'd probably lend him my Sierra Denali if he needed it. That's a pretty high level of trust in my world. In the final analysis, I can say I got what I paid for and then some. It wasn't cheap, but the service from start to finish was worth every nickel. From the initial phone call, to his site visit and assessment, to his timely and competitive bid, to the final expertly installed product, I'd put the experience in the nearly flawless category. Now, on to Angie's List to give this great dude and his awesome crew some much deserved "Angie Love." After all, man cannot live by Yelp alone. Seriously, here's to a job VERY well done. Another five stars - this guy is a life saver! (My fish think so, too!) Our AC unit went on on a Saturday night (Bastrop) - one of the hottest weeks of the year so far. After calling all over, we got nothing but answering services with un-returned calls, or calls saying they'd be out "Monday". So Sunday, after a hot, sleepless night, we went all over (and into Austin) looking for parts. Hubby had done some research online and found the culprit. (As it turns out, this was a part that had been defective since day one, but that's another story...more on that later). He visually inspected the unit and it was APPARENT from the fact that this part (dual run capacitor) had literally EXPLODED -that this was the problem. We were desperate. The temps outside were soaring, and the house was getting hotter and hotter, into the 90s. The water in our big aquarium was getting warmer and warmer, reaching the danger zone for the fish. Of course no one was going to come out over the weekend. We got lots of "I can't sell parts, but I can come fix it for (insert a few hundred dollars here), oh, and it's Sunday so (ching, ching) that'll be ninety more..." or just "we don't sell parts" - responses ranged from fear-mongering "That part going bad means your compressor is probably bad too" . There were a couple helpful ones, but Brian was by far over the top! Not only did he sell us the part, but he also said to call him if we ran into any problems installing it. What a great guy. In a world were so many businesses are just out there to see how much money they can extract from the desperate and uninformed consumer, it's nice to know that there are businessmen like Mr. Cool. I'd recommend him to anyone as a perfect example of an honest businessman AND just a kind, decent human being! (As it turns out - we'd had problems with this unit dimming all our house lights every time it turned on, since the house was built. Our builder even sent the electrician around to check/replace the breakers, to no avail, so we have lived with this for years. Since the new part is in? Not ONCE have our lights dimmed since and the AC is working flawlessly.) read more

I have used Mr. Cool twice now. Once on a rental property I own where the AC went out and I was shocked how affordable it was to have fixed. Probably 7 or 8 years ago, I called Brian for the first time when my AC went out. I was terrified I'd get an enormous bill because that's just what you expect, right? But, no. Used 2 parts when one would have been the correct way to go- then overcharged like crazy (ex: like $12 part cost me $225 for part plus install?!?!) - plus the other part not needed at another astonishingly high rate. They admitted one part could have been used but didn't have it on truck so used two parts - said it had been done that way before... So I asked if they always duplicate bad/wrong installs- and they said yes!!! I hung up with them then. Will not negotiate the bill or replace with correct part. I am writing this here in my now AMAZINGLY comfortable home thanks to Mr. Cool. He recently installed two Mini-Split HVAC systems in a fixer home that my fiance and I bought a few months ago that had no HVAC or ductwork whatsoever, just a couple of window units and gas space heaters. With summer on the way I researched alternatives to traditional HVAC systems and found Brian. I cannot recommend this guy highly enough. He is extremely knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. He was very professional and flexible in helping us find a creative and energy efficient solution to cooling and heating our home that fit our needs and our budget, AND that did not require tearing our house apart further to do it! Mr Cool actually did not deserve the bad review I gave. I had got a 2nd opinion and a better deal on some r22, but it turned out that Mr Cool was right the first time w/what was wrong w/my a/c. It took the 2nd opinion guys longer to fig it out. I must admit that I was wrong and this guy does not deserve to have anything bad said about his Biz. He was a nice guy and I feel bad now. So it's January in Austin and instead of trying to decide if I'm going to watch The Santaland Diaries before its run ends I'm deciding between bowing to an earlier Fox Service Company quote for a new a/c unit or looking for some yelp. Learning my lesson from watching the Bush administration, I sought out other opinions. Without disappointment and before I could say "Si se puede" yelp led me to Mr. Cool (aka Brian)! I called Brian and told him how our office rooftop a/c unit was not cooling properly. Brian was actually taking a vacation soon, but offered to check out our problem within the next two days. Brian confirmed the findings of Fox Service Company that there was a leak in the coils. Where Brian differed from Fox was his OPTIONS to fix the unit. Sure he said we could do what Fox recommended and replace our entire a/c unit for $7000, but he wanted to troubleshoot some more to possibly save us money. While there was no guarantee it would fix our problem, Brian offered to do the painstaking task of checking each of the coils for leaks with a pressure check. He filled the unit one day at a certain pressure and recommended waiting two weeks to compare upon return. During the two week span it was office PEER pressure that caused Brian to come in earlier than planned. He confirmed a leak and recommended a new evaporator coil- at a cost of just over $3000. Within days Brian replaced the coil and our a/c unit was noticeably improved. Months (and quite a few days above 80 degrees) later it's still running smoothly. A $4000 savings thanks to Mr. Cool! Brian went on his vacation and we threw away all other business cards in the rolodex for hvac/refrigeration repair. He even handed out snazzy pens, key chain and Swiss army type utility knife with his logo on it...and they're actually usable unlike other free crap you get from businesses. Thank you Brian for living up to your business name both professionally and personally. The moral of the story: always go with yelp- and get your Santaland Diaries tickets early! read more

I work from home, have 5 kids and my AC quit the end of July, ahhh! Mr. Cool was the only company that could come out in what I consider a reasonable time frame, and ended up coming an hour earlier than expected! He could have charged me an arm and a leg, I know nothing about AC units and had given the go ahead on a few repairs that, in the end, he said I didn't need. He unclogged the pipe, and even took the time to tell me how to keep it clean so that it doesn't happen again. Did I ever get lucky! Here's why: My A/C Blower went out, but only after record lows (low in the 50's - high in the 80's in May!) so I wasn't sweltering. I turned to Yelp to find a good A/C repair company. I saw the reviews for Mr Cool and knew he was the best around but I wasn't real hopeful that he'd be able to get to me since he's super busy. I updated my Facebook status alerting my friends to the dire straits I might be in, asking for their prayers and good juju. I called Mr Cool last night, left a message, he called me in the morning, and he was over here by 2 and it was fixed by 3. No grumbling about climbing into the hot attic either. And I had enough money to pay for it!. Brian showed me how to clean the coils on the outside unit, checked the freon, and he and I raised the unit off the ground all done gratis. I got home yesterday and my AC was blowing hot air and it was 90 degrees inside! yikes! I tried all the basic troubleshooting then turned to yelp. So after ready many, many reviews on various AC repair contractors I decided I'd call Mr. Cool. I made the call around 3:45pm and he said he would be available to come by after 7pm to take a look at it. He also got a description of the problem and told me how much the service charge would be. All seemed very reasonable. So being hot & therefore a little irritable today...I started getting a little nervous when I hadn't heard from him at 7:30pm so I called and left a message. He returned my call by about 8:30pm and was at my house by 9pm. I was so relieved! I don't have to sleep in a sweltering hot room tonight! Anyway, he was very nice, easy going and works fast! I began using Mr. Cool years ago when I lived in Austin. He replaced my 25+ yr. old unit with an new, much more efficient unit. He showed up when he said he would and did quality work - and didn't leave a big mess. He also informed me of the available city rebates. I live out of town now, but I still own houses in Austin. Mr. Cool is great about servicing my houses whenever the need arises and he speaks Spanish! His pricing is fair and he won't try to sell you something you don't need.
