I come from Texas and shipleys is what you hear people talk about all the time... well this place has them beat. I'm not completely sure what their methods are and how are they different but they are sure way superior on taste and how long your fresh donuts lasts after purchase... you can taste the love. Ohhh and you have to, I MEAN, YOU HAVE TO, try their pineapple fritter... is just the result of love and really good quality ingredients, everything they make is really really good. I got my first dozen donuts at Mr. D's donuts today. Can I tell you the excitement I felt walking into an old fashion donut shop? The saying shouldn't be "like a kid in a candy store" it should be "like anyone in a donut shop". And the flavors were creative and delicious... I couldn't justify buying all the flavors I wanted to try but I was able to get raised donuts with: lemon glaze, raspberry frosting, chai caramel frosting as well as a german chocolate cake. I didn't get to try their old fashioned or anything with a maple glaze. Everything was fabulous. Glazed donuts were both light yet substantial. Right now, this is my favorite donut shop and I take donuts very seriously. Plus all the employees were smiling and kind! My hands were full and customers were opening the doot for me and others! These donuts might be able to solve a lot of problems! And for those who like fritters they hsve those too! read more

This is my favorite donut shop in KC! With this being said, Mr D's fails in its "good business" accumen. Hours of business are posted. Beware! Many, many times they are OUT of donuts by 9 am. At least 4 hours before posted closing! How do you expect customers to be satisfied to react when they drive 20 minutes, out of there normal route, only to find out that the donut shop is already closed at 9:15 am! Better supply is expected before I can again be a regular. read more

This is our go-to for donuts. By 10/11 am they are pretty much cleaned out on a Saturday morning. They are really THAT good! Hurry in before they are gone. I haven't taken a picture of one cause they get eaten too fast, but try their Boston custard - it's the best and biggest I've ever had. read more

My favorite are the honey dipped (which have gotten so popular each time I go recently they are out) and maple doughnuts! They have started serving messenger coffee which is such an improvement. A nice surprise in a strip mall area of Shawnee. This cute little store has an extensive selection. However, this was 90% sold out by 10a.m. Lucked out and grabbed the last cinnamon roll, Danish and buttermilk. Light pastry and glazed just right. Stopped in here with my kids on a Sunday morning & was pleasantly surprised by the changes the new owners have made. The place is much cleaner & more friendly. The cinnamon roll that I had was 8-9" round, thin, & slightly crispy on the edges -- just the way I like it. The best of its kind that I've had in KC! The kids each thoroughly enjoyed their selections as well. I noticed that they serve Messenger coffee, too, though brewed in a traditional cafe-style brewer. The kicker: the owners were great. Thoughtful, friendly, & kind. Based on the several orders & conversations, it was clear that most of the folks that came in while we were there are regulars and that the owners know them well. This place is definitely what you call a great throwback donut shop. The donuts are good ol' fashion flavors/style. The honey dip (glazed) had that great slight crisp bite to it, yet it was light and fluffy inside. The Bavarian Cream filled donut also had that light/ fluffiness to it with a nice pudding like cream. The buttermilk donut wasn't bad either. We arrived at 8: 30 so a lot of the flavors were already gone. Will definitely go back to get a blueberry and a strawberry flavor. The other reviews about the very nice Asian couple running this rather quaint shop are fairly accurate. There are Chinese decorations on the walls, there are some dollar store item racks on the eastern wall, and they have a crank operated cash register. Bring your cash but you just need $0.80/donut and $8 per dozen. read more
