Rocky's was one of the great ones. Rocco Russo (Rocky) was the OG " When Rocky passed he left it to his youngest daughter, which did a fantastic job keeping his memory and store alive. Rocky knew what he was doing by not leaving it to the nephews. Rockys was about quality, freshness and he loved talking to us, his daughter was just like him. Unfortunately bitterness and resentment set in with other siblings and the twin nephews which wore on her. You'll hear different stories and versions, I'm sure. What once was a blessing became too much to bear. I pray for healing for this family and I'm so glad and thankful for the many years of providing the Eastern Market with such a wonderful store. There will never be another Rocky's or a better store, no matter what the relationship is. read more

Look, I like Rocky's, been going there for over 20 yrs as part of my Saturday market routine. But this, coupled with the rude service from the candy weighing lady (she watched us like a hawk as if my bf and I wanted to steal Swedish Fish, then totally deserted her station after we left, causing another customer to just dump the candy they needed weighing) causes me to post a review. I love browsing shops like this! My pocketbook doesn't really (since I can spent many many dollars) but I certainly do! Lots of bulk candy to much on, plenty of nuts to more healthily snack on. At least that's what I told myself when I devoured a box of cinnamon covered almonds. YUM. Lookin' for jam? They've got it. Marinades? Got it, made a stir fry with it. Feelin' like munching on some roasted peanuts in the shell to celebrate the Tigers wins? They've got those too! Like to support local businesses? They carry loads of local products as well. You can't get all your groceries here but you can definitely supplement it. If you're throwing a party or a get together this is the perfect place to get snacks since much of it is in bulk. I have to admit that I rarely pay much attention to the deli counter whenever I'm there, mostly because I know I'm going in for dry goods but if Carole H is to be believed (and oh I do) I guess it's nothing that exciting. I have been going to Rocky's for 15 years. When my family goes to Eastern Market, Rocky's was my personal favorite, must stop place. They USED to have an amazing supply of nuts, hard to find candies and local favorites that always filled our carts. We walked in today and I immediately had the feeling that the store was sold or going out of business. The aisles were mostly empty and "Sale" signs galore. The employees that I always see were gone. This store has all kinds of snacks, with an emphasis on nuts and candy. They have several different kinds of nuts, as well as flavored nut packages, sweet, spicy, and minimal. Some nuts you can find in large, bulk sizes, while they do sell smaller, more manageable sizes too (see my pix). They have a whole candy section, with a lot to offer that should appease anyone's sweet tooth. They have a small coffee section with local Michigan and Detroit produced whole bean coffee and a grinder available for use. Overrated. If Rocky's was anywhere but Eastern Market, it would not have the following it does. The goods are overpriced, and the selection seems good at first glance, but once you dig a bit deeper, you realize that its really a glorified World Market food section. Also, the nuts are especially overpriced and quite franky, not that great. One star extra for having McClures Bloody Mary mix. Better option: Warren Avenue in Dearborn. Stop at Super Greenland Market , and follow up at Hashem's Roastery and Shatila Bakery. read more

Rocky's takes me back to the days of dry goods shops and bulk stores when you could dole out rock-hard candy by the pound in one big lump or get a bag of rare nuts and sweets for all your Christmas baking. Those are a dying breed, replaced by the half-aisle of sticky containers in Meijer, and I so wanted to give into the nostalgia of this place. I just might have were I not already familiar with the secret stashes for nuts, spices, and dry goods in most ethnic stores and Whole Foods, if you're willing to pay the mark up. Still, I'm ready to give a place a chance. The beau told me about the tasty deli counter, the huge array of old timey candies so hard to find nowadays, and the elaborate selection of marinades, jams, jellies, jerks, and flavourful treats that make the difference between a dull chicken breast or pork chop and something magnificent. A good many Michigan products grace the wire shelves, which I definitely like. +1 star right there. Hard (but not impossible) to find goods are a great option to the ubiquitous Costco gift basket if you want to get the cook or griller in your life something tasty and Michigan-made. The dreamy appreciation died when I saw the prices for nuts by the pound and other candy. The beau and I ended up getting a bag of saltwater taffy in advance of a long drive to the north country around Mackinaw Island, and I nearly choked on the cost. Granted, they were nice saltwater taffies in a variety of flavours and colours, but enough to justify being that spendy? Not so much. Like Rodger W. says, Cost Plus World Market carries a pretty broad selection of the same items. Detroit area has a thriving number of ethnic supermarkets that carry the spiced nuts and the unique preserves at a fraction of the cost. That's really the theme I found moving from rack to rack; Rocky's charges a premium for what they carry, and sometimes the upcharge is enough to make me double take. Lots of those Michigan-made products can be found at Westborn Market or Western Market, if you don't want to go directly to the vendor. It hurts me to give this a two star rating, but Rocky's doesn't offer good value on the dollar. This is a must stop when you visit Eastern Market. For me, the Cajun in-shell peanuts bring me in. Then we spend time wandering around looking at all the unique products they have to offer. Large selection of organic, local and ginger products. Lots of bulk items from nuts to dried fruit to lentils and grains. The employees are all very friendly. The cashiers seem grumpy and rush you but I know it comes with the job. Smile a little more, ladies! It's good for both of us~ read more

Great place takes me back to my childhood...red pistachios and salt water taffy, pop rocks and now&laters. Things add up quick here but for the service and quality you just cant best it! On a Saturday morning after navigating Eastern Market, Rocky's is a great place to gather some of the items you won't likely find elsewhere. I have to admit that I rarely ever buy anything because the prices are a little steeper than some of my local spots but the selection of merch is just fun to check out. Notably the hot sauce aisle and the condiments are always enticing since I'm a condiment whore. Additionally, the bulk chocolate disks for melting come in huge bags, not to mention the selection of nuts, coffees and bulk candy. On top of all that, there's usually a very friendly welcome waiting for you at the front door but for a quick walk through you'll at least find a few items that you might not run across again. read more

I've also gotten locally made pizza sauce and harder-to-find items like ginger-flavored hard candies, but Rocky's doesn't seem to consistently carry certain items...and the employees can't always answer your questions about whether they have something...or where in the store it might be. I get that a kid in a candy store feeling from this place but not because of the candy but because of the nuts. I love coming here because they have such a great variety of specialty nuts. Spicy, salted, and flavored peanuts, almonds, pistachios and more! The prices are reasonable so if I don't feel like spending a lot (like i would down the road at Germack) I come here. If you're not into nuts that's cool because they also have an assortment of different seeds, spices, chocolates and candies. There is also a section where you can buy bulk if you're into that sort of thing. I also saw some items that you would not find in any usual place like dark chocolate covered chickpeas. One cool thing that I found is that they have the best price I can find on Mclures pickles (don't quote me but they were like $4.99 a jar). The store is not fancy by any means (actually pretty straight forward) but more importantly it is clean and the staff are friendly. So the next time you are down by Eastern Market and don't want to spend a lot on nuts and pickles check this place out. read more

Don't let the exterior fool you, this place was full of delectable goodies to tickle your taste buds. It had a little of everything. From loose leaf teas to peppermint sticks, Cajun peanuts to dozens of assorted and exotic spices, this place had it all! The prices were decent; the shop was clean enough (although lighting could have been better) and the variety was DEFINITELY there. Expect to see those old-fashioned, self-serve bins full of candies, chocolates, spices, and other tasty treats. If you got kids take them here, they'll love you for it. It is a sad reality that Rocky's is going downhill. At one time, this was the highlight of visiting Eastern Market. Like some of the other reviews state, the interior appears to be very aged and the stock seems low. I do believe that Rocky's is still a good alternative to Germack. The candy section has stood as an awesome treat and if you're a cook you will certainly find large quantity of any spices you need. I hope that the downfall does not continue for this hidden gem. Tip 1 : You can get a large jar of McClure's Pickles for $5...what a steal! There variety is huge in comparison to the other bulk good stores in the area. While you are in there looking at all the goods don't be compelled to open a bin and touch or smell. With the exception of candy, all the dry goods are bagged by employees. This may be discouraging to you but it is great for us. It is one more measure to ensure there is no cross-contamination of the gluten free goods and spices. I love that they have the Michigan made section. Omg a jar of Andiamo's spaghetti sauce is in the building. They have bulk candy and peanuts. A stop at Rocky's is a must whenever I'm around Eastern Market. They're known for their nuts (*insert childish giggle here*), as well they should be. Peanuts in the shell, mixed nuts, cashews, wasabi peas, various fruit and granola mixes, corn nuts in a variety of flavors, roasted almonds and pecans...all roasted & spiced in house. The deli counter doesn't have a huge selection of meats and cheeses, but it's enough to ensure that you'll find what you need, and the prices are comparable to what you'd pay at the grocery store (I should also note there is a selection of gourmet cheeses in a separate case near the deli counter). Rows of specialty products -unique dressings, spices, marinades, seasonings - many of which are locally made. Rocky's also has a large bulk candy section with Jelly Bellys, gummi candies, and WONDERFUL chocolate selections (the dark chocolate covered banana chips are my favorite...especially when they're put in the freezer at home so I can enjoy them cold!). What I always go to Rocky's for is their dried fruit, which is kept at the deli counter. Dried pineapple rings or chunks, dried mango, and cantelope. Mmmmm...sweet, chewy, and delicious! Plus, although I know they have been processed and sweetened, I can still convince myself it's a healthy snack alternative ;) I think this place is somewhat family owned, or at least used to be. Don't quote me on that. Regardless, the employees will greet you at the door and make you feel welcome in every area of the market. Especially the twin brothers who are usually at the deli counter (to be honest, I probably shop Rocky's for them just as much as I do for the dried fruit...hehehe). Minus one star for closing at 4:00 each day, and not being open at all on Mondays. Rocky's is an Eastern Market institution, not to be missed on your next visit down. read more

Had a lot of chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, healthy kind of chips, candy in bulk, spices in bulk, rubs, breadcrumbs, seasonings, sauces, pickles.....all the employees where helpful, we asked them about certain spices etc, and they gave good advice on which ones to choose. We actually went in twice. Got some stuff the first time, then while out and about kept thinking about some other things we saw and wanted, so we went back to get them. I love a good outdoor market and this was pretty cool. Definitely a nice cultural experience. Don't expect to get EVERYTHING at Eastern Market, it is mostly food items and a few other style vendors. Rocky's is your place. i heart bulk buying that doesn't cost me more money than buying it pre-packaged. one of the biggest reasons i love Rocky's is their customer service. You won't be hanging around the bulk items too long before one of the friendly associates will greet you and offer assistance. happens every time, i dig it. I hate to say that I think this place is resting on its laurels a little bit it is definitely an Eastern Market staple but I think that is why everyone recommends it there are two other reviewers on here that kind of hit the nail on the head it is a little bit overpriced and it's starting to become more like a whole foods .my specific issue is they were always known for they're warm peanuts you grab a paper bag and eat them while you shop the market it was part of the charm of going to Eastern Market on the weekend on the past 5 to 6 times that I have been down there and their sign has been out on the sidewalk warm peanuts were either not done that day or the male twin employee stated sorry I only do it once a day in kind of a rude tone. . On the most recent trip there was a very nice younger short black female in her probably mid twenties who was extremely apologetic and her service to myself and other patrons was well above par great work and I appreciate the service she stated to myself and another person who asked the same question that she gets asked why and where are the warm peanuts all of the time and says they only cook them for about 2 hours in the morning she bluntly stated she has asked them to put on their sandwich board from 6 o'clock to 8 o'clock only she feels it's false advertisement and has to deal with mad customers continuously and I agree with her that should be stated on the board because that is what is drawing some of the old Clientele in. Adding insult to injury after about paying 6$for a couple pounds of peanuts I get them home for myself and a few friends who are coming over to watch the game and every third or fourth peanut was completely chewy and had a bad taste which reminded me of boiled peanuts which I do not believe they serve in the big Bens there I was then informed by a friend's wife that those may have been the raw ones they had not cooked yet . His wife was kind enough to place them on a baking sheet and cook them in the oven and they turned out okay she stated she is done this before. Now I am just flat out mad on top of nonchalant and rude service by the male employee, false advertisement out front and only doing warm peanuts for 2 hours once a week in the morning doesn't cut it, and then you can't even cook the ones that I purchase. This is just ridiculous on top of the worst part when you try to leave the store is set up like a IKEA hell and you have to sneak your way out of the checkout even if you didn't purchase something just to be allowed to leave the store nothing like being held prisoner for some dried fruit and planters peanuts thanks a lot I realize this review is a little bitter but I have been coming here for years and love this place and I'm sad to see what it has become the only reason it's getting what it is is because of the excellent service of the one female employee who was honest about her discontent and the facility making her job harder unless I have to I probably won't be back but I do miss the memory of the warm peanuts on a cold weekend morning read more

These guys have everything that I did not know I even needed. I wandered in here not knowing what to expect and walked out with a full shopping bag's worth of stuff. The spice selection was impressive and they have all sorts of sauces - from barbecue to pasta, etc. Their selection of teas and coffee is also not bad. They also have a large selection of snacks (healthy and otherwise) and almost ready to eat things. I am glad I stopped in and cannot wait to make the risotto I bought. read more

Rocky's is a fabulous place to find everything from Spices to candy to mineral water. This is the only place I can find Rao's Artichoke pasta sauce in the metro area. Great selection of Detroit items, including Bloody Mary mixes from McClure's and fellow Eastern Market tenant Vivio's. read more

I'd recommend going down early, especially on a Saturday when the Farmer's Market is up and running. That is, if you're like me, and like to get in and out. Rocky's sells the best Gluten-Free Brownie mix I have yet to experience. My husband is not GF and claims that he can't even tell that these brownies aren't filled with gluten. They are better than most gluten-filled brownies. I give the mix 5 stars and the price 3 stars which averages to my 4 star rating. They are very expensive and I am hoping that Rocky's management will reconsider the pricing on this item. read more
