Grannies Cookie Jar & Ice Cream Parlor is a Metamora, Indiana icon, though it may be weird to call…read moreanything in this historic Franklin County town an actual "icon." There's quite a bit you know about me if you've followed my reviews for any length of time. This likely includes my long friendship with fellow Yelp Elites Rick G. and Holly G. - in fact, I performed their wedding ceremony! The three of us have actually collaborated on quite a few projects over the years, either due to Rick's music and comedy or because of my long history of activism and charity work. Frequently, our collaborations combine Rick and Holly's creativity with my activist spirit. For a couple years, Rick and Holly owned a shop in Metamora called Mosaic Learn & Play - I, in turn, owned a small charity bookstore within the walls of Mosaic. While I never spent nearly as much time in Metamora as did Rick and Holly, I spent my fair share of time there and grew to appreciate the picturesque, friendly town. Rick and Holly's wedding was even in Metamora! As is true of most historic towns, accessibility can definitely be an issue in Metamora. Truthfully, I'd say there's more that's not accessible than there actually is accessible in the town. Grannies is most certainly not perfect, a step greeting you at the front door and a crowded shop making even the most experienced wheelchair user more than a little paranoid. It's possible, I've been to Grannies more than once, but it's definitely a shop where I take my time wheeling and I am super careful everywhere I turn. Grannies, first of all, is an official world record holder. Granny owns over 2600 cookie jars - and I believe they're all actually here in this shop. She's held the record since 2012, as I recall. Grannies is, of course, an ice cream shop. Granny even makes all of her waffle cones by hand. Each one has a Hershey kiss at the bottom. She puts a whole lot of love in her waffle cones. The ice cream is pretty incredible, too. She has quite a few flavors and they're at reasonable prices for pretty darn amazing servings. Grannies is open 7 days a week throughout the year. While I can't say I'd drive all the way to Metamora for her ice cream, if I am in the Metamora there's no way I'm leaving without stopping at Grannies. Metamora is a beautiful little canal town. It has definitely been impacted by the pandemic, but the people are also hanging in there. I'm not quite going to say that time stands still here, but it's sure not a place you go to speed up. Metamora is a surprisingly easy drive from Indy and the entire Franklin County area could easily be a relaxing, fairly isolated day trip with Brookville also nearby as the seat of the county. There are even a couple places you can stay in Metamora, though they aren't particularly strong with access and you'd probably want to go to Brookville if that's needed. If you get a chance, head south to Metamora and be sure to stop in at Grannies for some ice cream and definitely check out those cookie jars!

Not just wall to wall... there are added sections in the middle, too! That's not mentioning the back room also has a ton of cookie jars! There are cookie jars shaped like fruit. There are cookie jars shaped like iconic characters. There are cookie jars with Coca Cola theme. Christmas. Animals. Just seriously, so. Many. Cookie. Jars. They do also have some coffee mugs and salt and pepper shakers. Bottom line, this shop is so quirky that I can't help but stop in when I'm in town. I just watch my step and make sure my purse won't knock the shelves. In Grannie's, if you break it, you buy it! PS -- there is a bathroom in the hall between the front room and back room, should you need one. They can be difficult to locate in Metamora if you don't know where they are.

Evelyn Confections -- also somewhat confusingly called Greenfield Chocolates by some -- is a boutique chocolate shop in downtown Greenfield. They use Valrhona chocolate and other high-quality ingredients to make their confections, and everything that they make is so fresh that they ask you to eat it within two weeks. I love that these chocolates are so good that they have rules! I don't think any kind of chocolate, in any amount, would last two weeks at my house, especially if it came from this chocolate shop, so that's no problem for me. They gave samples of their milk chocolate and dark chocolate, both of which were amazing. The chocolate has a snap when you bite into it, which is what you want. Then, it melts in your mouth. So luscious and delicious. I got a small sampler box of some of their popular chocolates: a milk chocolate caramel, a creamy vanilla bean truffle, a lemon chiffon truffle, a chocolate that had champagne in it (!!) and a crispy chocolate bonbon. Each chocolate was unique and spectacular and delightful. They have lots of chocolates and truffles, but they also sell chocolate bars, chocolate-covered nuts, caramel clusters and so many other chocolate-covered things. Greenfield Chocolates -- also called J. Evelyn Confections -- has received the Indiana Artisan seal of approval, which is kind of a big deal! It means that this local chocolate shop is committed to creating handcrafted and high-quality products in Indiana, which is really cool.

The clerk was friendly and happy to tell me the story of the owner, her friend who has this remarkable candy making skills. Most of the chocolate comes from Europe and all the candies are made fresh on site. The candies looked like little works of art. Some of the candies have a short shelf life (a couple days) because they are made of fresh ingredients and preservative free. She told me that their best seller are these giant nut clusters. They come with pecans or cashews and milk chocolate or dark. I picked out a dark chocolate cashew cluster. I ate my candy later in the evening and it tasted simply devine. The chocolate was rich and salty and the caramel creamy with the crunch of the fresh tasting nuts. What a treat. I'll be returning. The clerk told me that they decorate seasonly, and Christmas decor is fabulous.

The staff is welcoming and is generous with the tastings: four of us tried around ten flavors in all! It was a hot day, so this was our last stop by the market, so it would not melt on the way home. We got some bold Rüya dark 65% chocolate, flavored with Turkish espresso, with a touch of traditional cardamom expressing welcome. The cardamom flavoring is milder in this chocolate than it is in mideast coffee. That works for us. We got two with mild bourbon flavors: the somewhat-sweet Prohibition, and the lightly-orange seasonally-available Old Fashioned (reminiscent of the cocktail). We also got some seasonal slightly-fruity limited-edition Thailand 70% chocolate, one of our favorites. And we grabbed an assortment of lighter and darker sweet creams and truffles. We used to watch the bean-grinder in action here. Last year moved it to a new factory on the Licking River across the river in Lexington KY, a town where they also opened a second retail location in 2024 that includes gelato! The aroma here is lovely and chocolatey and roasty. The chocolate is divine.

I also purchased some truffles to take home, and I purchased enough to get a box but they were out of the small boxes. I told her I was traveling quite a distance and was concerned they would not make it. She said they would be fine and put them in a plastic bag. She could've offered the next size up in box! And indeed they did not make it. Hate I wasted money on these.

He is friendly and engaging. The gorgeous chocolates are made on site. The shop is filled with cases of truffles and small bites. Gift boxes throughout the store, showcase everything from chocolate dinosaurs to the state of Indiana. My mind was exploding just seeing all the chocolate. A display of shamrock and other St. Patrick's Day themed chocolates stood in the middle of the store. Todd told us that they custom make just about any shape of chocolate. They will cover wine bottles or other bottles with chocolate for perfect gifts. My brain was calculating what gifts that I need to pick up. I picked out several assorted dark chocolate truffles for an afternoon treat and a large dark bar for evening dessert. (It is important to get chocolate after every meal.) The truffles were divine. The raspberry truffles are the best I've had. My husband liked the amaretto truffle. They also serve a handful of flavors of gelato. I'll return later in the day and report back. I thought prices were reasonable. A small cafe table is inside the store if you want to eat your treats there. There is plenty of parking in the strip mall lot.
