Stopped in on Father's Day on the way to Hueston Woods. It was getting close to closing time, so the selection was a little limited, but man oh man, the donuts we got were super! We tried a butter beer and blueberry cheescake filled donut, along with a tiger tail and a generous portion of donut holes for our toddler. These were all great choices. But for me, the real test of a good shop is the apple fritter. These weren't my all-time favorites apple fritters (I have very specific requirements for the A+ grade) but these fritters from Oxford Doughnut Shop were grade-A, top-shelf, near perfect. Huge, full of flavor, a good balance between the crispy and the doughy. Very, very good. And get this: We got five, generously sized, premium donuts for HALF of what I've spent at other donut places. I went at 6am on my way home from a weekend trip and am so so glad I did. I was greeted by 2 young girls with smiles despite it being 6am on a Sunday. I asked them what their favorites were and got those as well as one I wanted. I ended up leaving with an original glazed and then an old fashioned glazed chocolate, blueberry, and red velvet donut. My BFF has been living in oxford for years and just barely took me to the Oxford Doughnut Shoppe on my last visit. They bake the doughnuts during the night and supply other local stores in addition to the selection they sell out of their own storefront. They have a wide selection (we went before 9 on a Saturday), and if you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask, they had several racks behind the display. Our morning began with a stop at the Oxford Doughnut Shoppe. This was a good ways out - near Miami University - about a forty minute drive, depending on where you're coming from in Cincinnati. This basic shop is located in a small strip mall, and they had an average selection. I had the Glazed Red Velvet donut - it had a nice glaze, and it was dense without being heavy or dry. Really good. My husband chose the Apple Fritter, which he said was kind of light on the apple flavor..but it did have a wonderful brown butter and cinnamon flavor. Took part in the Butler County donut trail. If you are not aware of what this entails, it requires that you visit 12 for all 15 mom-and-pop donut shops throughout the county and get a stamp or acquire the nearby geocache. Upon completing 117 miles in roughly 6 hours we came back to the visitation center, present our passport and acquired our T-shirt and completion Coin for 2018. The ability to hit all of these donut shops required proper planning. It was great to see a number of different things throughout our travels. Additionally it was nice to engage with locals and donut shop operators alike. The standards are done incredibly well here! You will not find any strange donut flavors at the Doughnut Shoppe here in Oxford. No bacon or (heaven help us) PUMPKIN SPICE anywhere to be seen. If a donut or turnover is filled- it's FILLED. If it's iced- it's ICED. The gentleman who makes these donuts never skimps and the pricing is quite reasonable. A while back, he hired some young women (Miami students?) to help him run the place, and it seemingly allowed him to bake more batches of donuts and the hours it was open significantly increased. This was (perhaps) one of the best things ever to happen in the town of Oxford. :) Get there before the "Out of donuts" sign appears! You will not regret it. read more

Friday the 13th. Lucky day for me. Story: Every Friday-Sunday, I go to Dunkin Donuts in Oxford and get coffee for my wife, son and me. And every once in a while, the manager will tell me, "it's on the house". Always appreciated. Last Saturday, it was on the house. Sunday, the driver before me paid for my coffee and today, another driver in front of me, paid for my coffee again. I told the manager that this was the second time in a row that a customer in drive thru paid for my coffee. He said, "it's amazing how many of their customers "pay it forward". Oxford Doughnut Shop knows what it does and does not try to distract the customer with complex flavors. They specialize in classic doughnuts and they are probably the best doughnuts that I have had. Classic glazed yeast and the chocolate iced with sprinkles are the two types that I got for my family and both of them were phenomenal. The doughnuts were incredibly fluffy and they last very well. I've had a lot of donuts in my time on this earth. I've had the gourmet donuts, I've had the over the top crazy weird ingredient donuts, I've had the bacon donuts. While those are all pretty good, they do not compare to the cake donuts here. The locals know all about this place, and some of the students do too; they sell out by noon everyday. The cake donuts here are literally the best cake donuts I've ever had in my life. I've never before been a huge cake donut fan; they're usually pretty heavy and lacking in flavor. The Oxford donut shop's donuts are light, fluffy, every bite is full of so much flavor, and the glaze they use is just delicious. My favorites are the blueberry and the red velvet. The vanilla is great too. The chocolate is great but very rich; you'd probably have to eat it in two sittings. Final verdict, get to this place as fast as possible if you're in the area.... the normal donuts are great too, but be sure to get some cake ones! For being in a tucked away strip mall in a rural college town you probably wouldn't expect much, but holy moly this place was good. 85¢ doughnuts, multiple cheap drinks, and friendly staff. It was kind of cool to see a fresh pan being brought out while we were there. But anyways, I got a white icing doughnut, and unlike dunkin, they used a glazed donut rather than a plain donut.
