I'm telling you, if you can't find what you need for a home improvement project at Mr. Plywood, I don't know what to tell you. The rows and rows of lumber and plywood is fascinating. The selection of siding, mouldings, hardwood, wall coverings, etc., is staggering. They also stock stains & sealers, concrete, mortar, sand, and pier blocks. Plus all the nuts, bolts, glues, and screws you can think of to complete any project. I don't even mind tagging along with my husband -the home improvement guru and Master wood worker- because the store is clean and there's so much to see. It's big but not too big and well-lighted too. Nice, helpful people will answer every question you may have. It's a little farther than our local Big Box store but to not have to have that Big Box experience is worth the extra driving. Excellent quality and great prices as well. read more

Mr Plywood makes me proud to support local businesses. The customer service is first rate, and their prices are competitive. I'm completing a DYI deck project. Today I needed 1x 8 cedar, and caps for the deck posts. First stop was Lowes, the closest retailer to our house. The boards were so-so, and the caps were not of the quality that I was looking for. Home Depot was second closest. Boards were okay, but again the caps were inferior, and after getting the highly annoying 'bing-bong' security camera warning about 4 times for my highly suspicious act of walking down an isle, I left happily empty handed. Mr. Plywood is a bit far from home, but I decided to venture there anyway. WHAT a difference! The boards I found are far superior in quality, and EXACTLY the same price as the big box stores. The post caps were the brand I was looking for, and $4.00 less per cap than I found them on line. When buying multiples, that $4.00 difference adds up fast! The service was friendly, personal, and they know their stuff. Without so much as one 'bing-bong' warning with a security camera staring at my face, I got what I needed at a reasonable price quickly and efficiently. I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Plywood. Friendly, positive and helpful staff! I enjoy hardware and lumbar places that are women friendly and don't mind taking some time to answer my questions in an educated way! I am in the middle of some deck maintenance and had to repair some dry rot. I picked up some STK cedar. The quality of wood here is so much better than your regular run-of-the-mill store such as Home Depot or Lowes. There are both men and women employees here. Don't let these guys rip any finish plywood for you. Their panel saw is a piece of junk, or else they don't know how to operate it. This is a typical edge they cut. Home Depot does a better job, and they don't charge for it either. Mr Plywood charges a fee to wreck your edge. read more

This is a cool plywood supply store because they have all kinds of plywood & flat panels from the cheapest to the most expensive. They also have a decent selection of square and rectangle wood, dowels, hardwork, and some tools. Even though the store is not. Large, one can spend a lot of time looking at "fun" things there. The employees are friendly and helpful in a "cold" manner, if that makes any sense. There is plenty of parking even though that parking lot is not huge. read more

Mr. Plywood is a place of infinite possibilities. It's not a big box home improvement store. They don't have all the do-dads that you'll find in a bigger place. What they do have is excellent lumber - both local and not, common and exotic, some pricey and others inexpensive. But even the pricey ones are probably going to go for a little less than you'd pay at the big orange store. Their prices are competitive. My husband works in an industry that uses all sorts of sizes and types of lumber and he goes there most often for the title item, plywood. He likes that they always have a good selection of quality product. No warping, no hideous imperfections. I bought some weave here to make a trellis. We also bought a lot of turned moldings and narrow pieces when we were hacking four IKEA bookshelves into a built-in unit in our home. They can make cuts for you if you don't have that capacity, and the guys who work there are easy to talk to and have great advice. Sometimes you can find ready made furniture, like the Adirondack chairs my friend bought last week for his new house. If you know you need lumber, and not all the ephemera, then head on over and let them help you out. Oh, and get a bumper sticker !! read more

Their staff is very long-tenured (always a good sign), and they are knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. There's nothing like a small family store that has been around for quite awhile and the fast and friendly service is the main reason why it is. I live a little over a mile from Mr. Plywood and instead of hopping a train out to Mall 205 and visit the Big Orange store, I can come here to Montavilla and find exactly what I need to get my project off the ground. The prices are going to be a touch more, but it all equals out in the fact that I was in and out in about 10 minutes( it also helps that the layout of the place is fairly simple and even without assistance, one can find what they need fairly quickly). The website says they give you special attention to meet your needs. I called in advance to make sure they had what I wanted. When I arrived an hour later the person who greeted me acknowledged that he'd been the one to talk to me on the phone and then simultaneously dismissed me as one of many who was interested in the same product. He took me to, and left me at, the product without asking anything more. Well that was needlessly offish but uhhh ok. So I browsed and went back to the desk with my questions and the next guy kept walking around showing me things other than what I was trying to ask questions about. Once he was 20 feet ahead of me in a direction I'd already been and knew I didn't need to go, and calling after him was futile, I just gave up on my quest. Such a bizarre waste of time. read more

I recently started woodworking because I am having my first kid and I wanted to build some of the furniture on my own. The first piece of furniture I build was an entertainment center. I bought all the lumber I needed at Home Depot and, to put it mildly, it sucked. The wood was warped and expensive. My lack of experience didnt help either. For my next project, a baby changing station, I decided to go to Mr. Plywood after the Harbor Freight Tools rep recommended them. I stopped by there on Friday afternoon and there is no way I am going back to Home Depot. Their prices were cheaper and the quality is way better. This place is a waste of time. They are rude and unprofessional from the owner to the little minions walking around. They are not willing to answer questions or help in a timely manner. I personally hate going to this business and will always try from here on out to go elsewhere. They have the worst service and the owner doesn't care to help to get a problem resolved. This spot is just down the street from us on Stark. They are small but the prices are competitive. They have a very friendly staff that is available to help make cuts for free. You can get pressure treated, cedar, and Douglas fir. They have all the materials a carpenter would need from framing to finished work. The kind of place that makes you think of that next home improvement job you need to do. This is the easiest place to buy lumber as an amateur maker in Portland. The staff are super considerate and non-judgmental. Their social distancing practices during covid make shopping there feel very safe. We've loved all of the lumber we've gotten from them--super clean and high quality. We purchased some cheaper material for baseboards and they worked great. They had long planks of Doug fir on sale that we've used to build wall shelves and a special book display for our baby's nursery. They can cut the wood down to fit in your car if you don't have a truck. Lovely selection of tools and wood finished too, and the pricing is competitive with even big chains. read more

Hands down the best lumber store in the SE (and I would assume all of PDX as well). Sure Home Depot may be slightly cheaper for some things, but the quality of the wood that Mr Plywood sells is far superior. Plus the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable with whatever project you're working on. I own a house built in 1910. So I have lots of things that I want to fix up. They have the selection of wood to fix and upgrade things. Home Depot and Lowe's are fine if you need screws or paint brushes, but if you need lumber, go the Mr. Plywood. read more
