In the past, I've had good enough experiences here, but today... I am particularly irritated with my experience. I came in and stumbled across unlabeled material that happened to match a different project, have I asked for the price. I was quoted $23 a foot. I let them know that I had to run out and grab a vehicle they could carry it, and I'd be right back to purchase. Will I returned. They had put a label for $25 a foot. Not a big difference, but when you're buying 46 feet, it adds up. Also, what's the point of quoting me a price just to change it two hours later. read more

First off, you must know that I'm clueless about home projects, but I went to Woodcrafters today to learn how I might finish a wood slab that I am using as a desk top. The sales person Mano asked if he could help me, and it must have been my lucky day. He was patient, thorough and warm to work with. I could not have asked for a better fit, given my lack of experience and my personality. He was knowledgeable and charming! In addition, the store was neat, well-organized and well-stocked, and had a wide variety of products to choose from. Hey, I love Woodcrafters. I get great advice, have an excellent selection of wood and tools, books, and supplies. I rarely leave Woodcrafters because they didn't have what I needed. I find the advice helpful and unless its really busy I can usually find someone to help with explanations and demos as needed. I've read some of the negative comments and would like to address them. 1. If you find an employee who is rude, ask to talk to Steve, the owner. He is highly approachable. 2. A brick and mortar company providing superior selection and customer service, will have higher expenses doing so. I like service over online shopping and don't mind paying for that. If you think something is priced way out of line, talk to Steve. He'll review the price and get back to you. I'm not apologizing for Woodcrafters. I just really like having a store where I can ask them about router lifts and get a 15 minute discussion covering 4-5 different lifts that are in stock, leave with some scroll saw blades, 2000 grit wet dry sand paper, look at their Japanese stones, and pick get some specialty wood, drawer slides, grk screws, and general finishes varnish. I can look at some serious woodworking machinery assembled and in stock. And their baltic birch plywood is really well priced!!! This is the only place you can do that in Portland and maybe the PNW. read more

I stopped by Woodcrafters and immediately saw Jim (previously from Rockler) working there. I went in for a Festool jigsaw and instead left with a new Laguna bandsaw & a few other spendy goodies. Well done Jim ! It's nice to see that Woodcrafters still values employees who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. It makes such a difference to talk to someone that KNOWS what they are talking about. I highly recommend. This is where I purchased my first Festool 1000 years ago, and they are worth the drive. I wanted to check if Woodcrafters sold a couple of products. The website is awful. All it lists are the various catagories of items it sells. So click on 'Turning tools' and you see a list of the suppliers of turning tools - nothing more. But you get a message "if you would like to know more - SEND US A MESSAGE". So I did; twice about 2 different items. 3 days later I am still awaiting a reply. Simply appalling - both the website and the customer service. read more

I was looking for some wood for a particular outdoor project that I didn't want to rely on big box quality for, so I stopped in here. I think I actually said "WOW" when I stepped in the door. Embarrassing. It's a woodworkers paradise. And after a few minutes of wandering around clearly looking like I had no idea what I was doing (I don't), one of the very friendly staff asked me if I needed help. Very friendly and helpful. If you're expecting big box lumber prices - and quality - go to a big box. The lumber I bought was pricey, but the quality is superb. Plus, I picked up some Bessey clamps! This business absolutely get my 5 star rating for great customer service, creative craftsmanship, and professional expertise. :) We lost a crib leg during our move and was unable to find success from getting a replacement from our original source - Potterybarn Kids :(. They recommended just taking all the legs off (which would mean making the crib shorter) or repurchasing a whole new crib (that was not an option due to how expensive it was to purchase the first one). My husband got creative and started looking online to see if someone could make a replica of the crib leg. He found this place and went in for the hunt. I'm so happy he did because we immediately got some talented woodcrafters working on making the exact identical crib leg. They even helped us get as close of color of the stain to match the color of the crib. So impressed and so content to see that there is hope out there! Highly recommend this business and I will definitely come back again for any future projects we may need to accomplished. This is the best success story ever. :) read more

I've purchased many, many items here over the years and I've found the staff to be very helpful when I have questions. It is busy sometimes, so I'm not upset to wait a bit for help. I enjoy wandering around the store while I wait. It's part of my enjoyment of visiting this particular store. When I want fast, no frills service I head for Rockler or Woodcraft. I do find the lumber selection to be very, very good. I buy all of my hardwoods here. I've not found the prices on the high(er) end tools to be that great for my budget. I've looked (ok, lusted) after the Festools that they carry, but the sticker shock has sent me scampering away like a scalded dog. I'm just a simple hobbyist, so the high end tools seem a bit much. So overall I wish that they carried a few more tools in the "Middle price range" for a hobbyist like me and fewer tools for the professional tradesmen. I've purchased other big ticket items (cabinet saw, band saw, etc) at other woodworking stores in the Portland area and found them willing to negotiate on the prices. If you are female, do not shop here. I went in searching for a high priced tool for my husband as a gift. I walked around the store over 20 minutes completely lost. I watched a dozen or more men be greeted and offered assistance. Not a single employee offered help, let alone acknowledged my existance until I was literally walking out the door when I was asked in a robotic way "find what you needed?" Sad. They just lost a very good sale. Guess I will stick with big commercial stores like Lowes or friendly helpful stores like Rockler. read more

Everyone was friendly, professional, and mostly attentive. Understood what I was looking for, all clearly into this stuff themselves. I went in for a few things and came out with a dozen, which is what happens when you give a kid a credit card and send them into a toy store. Speaking solely from the perspective of a luthier, the prices on domestic lumber is higher than I would pay at a nearby yard or a sawyer, but not so much that it offsets only having to go to one store / shipping if you're only buying a few pieces. Large, figured domestic mill ends were the only thing where I balked. Seemed like they have been picked through, so that didn't help. The small offcuts, though, were a solid deal. I'm always in need of smaller pieces of ebony and rosewood for repairs/dust, so finding they have boxes full of presentable pieces was nice. Also helps with the environmental guilt a bit, since it's not like *I* bought the slab. ...Right? "Woodcrafters: Launder your shame with our deals!" I suggest anyone nearby make a woodworking excursion here. (Maybe get a second mortgage before you go, just in case you decide to splurge on a Festool dust extraction system or something?) read more

This place isn't harbor freight, and it isn't parr lumber, it's more of a specialty woodworking store that has a great selection of nice wood, bits, and sawblades. So if you want something cheap and fast, don't go here. If you want high quality and aren't in some insane rush, then this is the spot. It's actually not even that expensive, or slow. I swear some of these reviewers haven't been to other hardware stores/lumber yards. I mean if these people can so readily look down their noses at this place, what beautiful woodworking shangri-la's must they frequent!? To those who say the customer service took too long, it's because the people here will actually take the time to talk to you about a project, so they're helping other people when you are so ignominiously waiting. If they are ignoring you, maybe it's because they can just tell you're some entitled little brat who's gonna go bitch about it on yelp if they don't bend over backwards answering your (probably inane) questions. These dudes don't give a shit about your yelp review. Oh and to Pepper P who blames them for fucking up their project; You're likely an idiot, so take some responsibility. I've worked with these guys on multiple occasions and they are nothing but professional. These guys will give you advice sure, but they aint gonna walk you through everything, so don't act like a baby when YOU mess up. Also you're obviously familiar with the internet, so maybe look up what you're doing before you commit to an apparently irreversible $200 solution. I dunno, just a thought. They charge very reasonable fabrication rates, so you can give them a list of dimensions (for some MDF, for example) and they cut it all up nice and clean and it's SO much quicker/cleaner than if i were to do it in my own shop, especially for larger pieces. (Again, these guys are awesome. I left this review because most of the older woodworkers who've been going here for years aren't going to show up in yelp reviews, so don't let some entitled morons turn you away.) read more

Lots of wood and tools for woodworking but this place is geared toward the professional woodworker so don't expect much help from anyone if you are a novice like me. I'm sure they they wondering what a clueless woman was doing in there. I was looking for crown moulding and after waiting around for help and not getting it I asked the cashier and was give the aisle number. No offer to help me find what I needed or anything. I'm glad I didn't find anything worth buying because I wouldn't have wanted to support this store anyway. I also checked the price of some 1x8x16 pieces of wood boards I recently purchased from a different place and they were more per ft here so that gave me another reason not to shop here. Love these guys! I was attempting a project to stain an exterior fiberglass door. I had heard of this successfully being done though I couldn't find anyone that knew how to do it. I consulted with the staff at Woodcrafters, purchased the product, followed their directions and I now have a gorgeous exterior stained door! I find it to be both amazing and ridiculous what people expect from a place like this. Woodcrafters is high, its not a box store and its not a place to go if you are clueless and need help fixing a door or something like that. They carry nice wood that is costly, they carry nice tools like Festool, they have always been nice to me when I had a question such as when I drill press shopping. All said they have some nice stuff for sale and often I have found there prices to be comparable to what you will find online. read more

The selection is the best in all of Portland for wood crafting items. They are a good place if you want to know what the grain pattern and color of wood from different trees, from all over the world, looks like in the flesh.They may not be the most wholesale/ specialized supplier, but they are the BEST all-in-one Portland wood spot. If you are into wood, or into craft involving wood, or took some classes at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts involving wood, you should geo-bookmark this place, and visit, in (geo) person. read more

Amazing customer service and assistance. I know noooooothing about wood and woodworking, but I had a project that required me to learn enough to accomplish it. I threw myself on the mercy of the first employee I saw, and he patiently figured out the best way for me to get my project done, found the right wood and cut pieces for me, explained to me how I should apply wood conditioner, stain, and finish, and helped me pick out the right ones. I don't need any hand-holding, but they all but ignored me in there, standing by the front counter, three of them standing around gabbing, me at the counter, with my wood and credit card out. How much do I have to beg these guys to take my money? Guess I'll do a little more shopping around. I came here for professional advice for a project. The first person I asked spent five minutes hemming and hawing before I asked for someone with actual product knowledge. The next guy seemed helpful and polite but gave me the worst advice... With a $200 price tag. I destroyed my project and wasted the money. Now, I have to redo the whole darn thing.... I'm an out of state hobbyist but love to check out new places. This place is awesome if all you're doing is looking. If you've been to woodcraft it's like that with a much better wood selection. I was very impressed with the size of the store but like many other comments here I was highly disappointed with their service and prices. Couldn't get assistance so I waited in line and talked to a lady who was very curt and just told me what isle to look on. On prices... Stanley No. 4 Sweetheart is $190 there, on Amazon it's $106. I understand the need to make a profit but that seems a bit high imo. read more

Probably anyone who is a woodworker or a wood finisher knows that this is THE place to get anything and everything you could possibly need for wood working and wood finishing, and probably everyone else could care less. However, I feel like I should shed some light on this emporium of all things wood-related - because, really, do we need another review of a coffee shop or a bar? Woodcrafters is huge and potentially overwhelming. If you don't have any knowledge of wood working/wood finishing, and you walked into this store, you would probably think to yourself "how can a store that is solely dedicated to woodworking products and nothing else POSSIBLY have so much STUFF"? To which I would respond, well, wood working and wood finishing are serious business. No kidding. So, the long and the short of it: you need milk paint? They've got it. You need sanding sealer in a spray can? Got it (incidentally, no one else does). Need a medium walnut stain pen (I did)? Got it. One caveat: some of this stuff can be EXPENSIVE. If you don't watch it, you can end up paying almost twice as much for some stuff here than you would pay at other less exotic destinations (such as Fred Meyer). For instance: I often have the occasion to buy cans of Deft lacquer. I have found Fred Meyer, as much as I hate its guts, to have to best price in town for this particular item, at $5.99 per can. Woodcrafters price? Wait for it.........$10.99 per can. Almost twice as much!! Why?? Beats the hell out of me. Maybe Freddies has a special deal with the Deft company that allows them to offer the cans of lacquer for less than anywhere else. Maybe Woodcrafters likes to gouge their customers who need simple, prosaic cans of lacquer. I couldn't tell ya. The verdict? Need a can of lacquer? Go to Fred Meyer. Need some milk paint? Go to Woodcrafters. End of story. read more

I am very appreciative of Woodcrafters for hosting the Katz roadshow yesterday. The event was very well organized and I gained a lot of very useful information. I found the employees to be very friendly and welcoming and never felt uncomfortable being one of very few women in the audience. I am only giving four stars because the bathroom was pretty disgusting. It is a single unisex bathroom and the urinal is in close proximity to the toilet (ick). The bathroom smelled very strongly of urine (maybe this was because there was an unusually high number of people using the single bathroom because of the event?). Woodcrafters should definitely prioritize adding an additional bathroom for ladies who also love the products they sell. read more

We needed a band saw, and weren't interested in Home Depot store brand crap. We wanted to look at what we were getting before we bought it, and we didn't want to go way out of our way. At Woodcrafters, we found friendly, helpful, and honest service-- I love it when a salesman actually tells me what they have and don't have, and what I'm better off getting elsewhere. We took forever making a decision, opening compartments, moving parts, asking questions, stewing, mulling, calling a friend, moving parts some more-- and were given lots of space to do so. Lee stayed close by when we needed him, and backed off when we wanted to play with the tools on our own. He was very knowledgeable, willing to look things up when he didn't know, and very low-pressure. Once we made our decision, we brought around our cargo bike to haul the boxes home. Lee and another employee were very good sports in helping us strap these these hundreds of pounds of tool to the frame. But-- ALAS!-- the tool came in two boxes, and those boxes were of such uneven weight that the bike was unridable once loaded. They were happy to deliver it for free come Monday, but when we said we were hoping to get to a project right away, he arranged for a coworker to drive it to our place on his way home from work. Amazing. Woodcrafters carries tools that are, in general, of higher quality than those in the big boxes-- and yes, they cost more. But I've never had such awesome, considerate, attentive service. And the tool is pretty great, too. read more

To be truthful, some of the reviews make me wonder if I've been shopping in some sort of parallel universe. I've never had a bad experience from a customer service perspective here. The staff, in addition to being knowledgeable, has always been accessible and more than helpful. I recently needed a sheet of 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood. I called, and was told they were out of stock of the thickness I needed, but a shipment was due in a couple of days later. I put a sheet on order. About a half-hour later, I got a call back from the employee who had fielded my call. He said the computer showed they were out, but he went back to the stock area and found one sheet of what I needed. He said he put my name on it and it would be waiting for me when I came in. That, my friends, is going above and beyond. Prices? In my opinion, most things are priced competitively in the market. They are on a par with Rockler for most items. Yes, the power tools are expensive, but they aren't the consumer-grade products you'll find in your local home center, either. If you're building an occasional wood box, you will probably be just fine with a $150 table-top Makita saw. If you're in a production environment, or building fine furniture-grade projects, you may find the higher-grade tools to be a good investment. You wouldn't expect to get good Champagne for table-wine prices, why would you expect any difference in woodworking tools? read more

As a professional designer, builder and woodworker, I have frequented this place for many many years. Sometimes they're WoodCrafters, other times they're WoodShafters. The items in the store are not as rare or difficult to obtain as they or many may think. The pricing is a bit high for most products but their selection is impressive. If you feel like driving, other suppliers can be 15% cheaper for the same items. Of course, all the festool stuff is price fixed, so your paying too much anywhere you go, but like me, you'll pay for your tool addiction. For convenience, selection and most of the staff, they'd get more stars, but pricing and some rare attitude issues they get less. read more

I only go here as a Last resort for my woodworking needs. I can't afford many of the tools in the store, and when i do buy the odd sawblade or overpriced piece of lumber it's always the same,--grumpy staff who always make me wait at the counter with my money in hand, while they fiddle with something or other behind the counter, or just seem too preoccupied to come ring me up. The last time, the guy was actually throwing pens that didn't work down on the desk like he was having a little tantrum. while I waited to sign my receipt.
