We had our aging air conditioning system and gas heatter replaced with mini-splits. Ben came and talked to us, and went through everything, and we enjoyed talking and planning with him.. Shortly after, Bryan and Aaron came to do the installation, and worked for most of four days. They were pleasant, professional, hard-working , and very considerate, just nice to have working in our home. An additional thing we had really wanted was to have the huge wooden vent covering that took up most of our bedroom closet and the old furnace in our garage taken out. Bryan and Aaron did the entire project as agreed, with care. Julio had some time and came by near the end and helped with some advice too. Everything is working beautifully, and cools really well when set to a surprisingly high temperature, which is very efficient, and hopefully will mean even lower bills. Looking forward to using it for heating later, will be a big improvement. Bryan emphasized the pride he and Aaron take in their work and in our job, and it showed. We are writing this review to spare other homeowners the stress, displacement, health concerns, wasted time, and costs that our family had to endure as a result of Mr. Poppy's work practices. We hired Mr. Poppy after meeting with the salespeople/principals Andrei Smith and Tenzin Soepa to install a ducted heat pump, and the experience resulted in severe water damage, mold growth requiring professional remediation, and more than a month of displacement for our family.We have a young child with asthma, so this was especially stressful. Installation Failures: -Faulty installation: A defective condensate drainage setup caused water to accumulate and saturate our home's building materials, leading to mold growth. -Independent verification: A licensed plumber, HVAC professionals, and a certified moisture and mold expert independently documented problems with Mr. Poppy's installation, and identified their installation as the cause of the resulting water damage. -No resolution: We gave Mr. Poppy multiple opportunities to address our concerns, but we were unable to get the issues resolved. We ultimately filed a formal complaint with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Permit Issues: -Permit discrepancy: We were told by Mr. Poppy a permit had been pulled before work began. The City of Berkeley confirmed there was no active permit -- and no application on file -- when the work was performed. -Inaccurate retroactive filing: When pressed about the permit discrepancy, Mr. Poppy submitted a permit application with the wrong scope of work, incorrect locations of components already installed, and without accurately disclosing that the work had already been performed. The City of Berkeley ultimately advised us that it may be better to close Mr. Poppy's permit and submit a new application with accurate information. -Verify independently: If you are a homeowner who has had work done by Mr. Poppy and were told a permit was obtained and inspections scheduled, we strongly urge you to verify this independently with your local building department. Mr. Poppy exceeded all my expectations when it came down to having a brand new HVAC system installed in my home. Soepa (Owner of Mr. Poppy) made the process from beginning until end as smooth as possible. He provided clear and prompt communication from the start. His quote was very competitive and it included replacing my ancient furnace, installing a brand new heat pump, replacing all of the existing ducts, and adding an additional three ducts. My house was built in 1969 so this job was no easy feat. Shoutout to Mr. Poppy's field technicians/installers Bryan, Aaron, and manager Gilbert for all their hard work on the installation process. They were always punctual, professional and respectful. After the installation process was completed, Gilbert did a full walk through with me. He explained how the new heat pump functions, where condensation from the furnace flows (drain system), how to setup and customize preferences on the new thermostat, required maintenance, and things to look out for to ensure the new furnace and heat pump work adequately in the years to come. Admittedly I never heard of this company before I've gotten onto one of Facebook algorithms concerning air conditioning replacements. Honestly they had a very good sale at the time, I requested a free estimate so I called and made an appointment. The coordinator left a message on voicemail on my landline. So when calling back the original coordinator was on lunch but the one currently talking to me could handle the appointment. Upon finding the right day and time, it sort of worked out since it was basically the next day. The appointment window was between 8-10am, and Josh showed up around 9 which was nice for fitting into the appointment window. I showed him to my furnace, thermostat and air conditioning unit, upon gathering all the needed information he then started to basically crunch the numbers and explain what was the ideal model and the warranties that go along with their units. Josh was very friendly, knowledgeable and showed empathy when I explained my family situation and work life and he was open enough to share some of his experiences. Anyways, when he was done crunching the numbers and answered some of my questions, Mr. Poppy's was admitted fantastic and was far cheaper than what I was expecting. Since I was taking multiple bids, he did txt me his number to follow up and answer any additional questions if they popped up. Honestly I would have at a drop of a hat gone through them, but I took my normal air conditioning repair company bid albeit mine couldn't price match their excellent estimate, but we did haggle to where I liked their price point. So if I didn't have a normal repair company..Mr. Poppy would have definitely gotten my business and probably the future inspections and repairs. Didn't work with Mr. Poppy, the organization stopped responding to me when they figured out I did not want to completely rip out and replace all the existing knob and tube electrical. So why do they advertise "we're not scared of knob and tube" when all they'll do is replace the whole thing? Any electrician would want to do that. I hired Mr. Poppy to Replace my 40 year old Furnace for a new 4 Ton Heat Pump+Air Conditioning. I feel like I hit the jackpot finding this company. From start to finish, the job was done professionally. They gave me one price at the beginning of the job and that's the price I paid at the end, despite them having to do nunmerous upgrades to my ventilation system and my electrical box. The even used some of my crawl space to find a much more suitable position for the main heat pump which opened up other rooms for storage. They are magicians with air flow and managed to get air to rooms that have never had any flow. They evn built me a custom vent for a large room. The unit works amazingly. It's getting warmer and warmer in Berkeley and to have functioinal AC in the Berkeley Hills makes me feel like I have finally made it in life. I worked with Soepa, Jerson, Edwin and Chuy. Amazing experience from start to finish! While selling our mom's condo, the A/C compressor died. The house was already in escrow and was set to close in just a few days.
