I have been doing business with Ed Baker for 35 years and believe him to be a man of the highest integrity, with fair prices and quality work. I recently called him when a shingle blew off my roof to examine the roof and repair the resulting "drip." What followed was nothing short of amazing. Three years ago I paid a tucking pointing company to rebuild my chimney. Second City discovered that the work had been poorly performed and in fact GARBAGE had been stuffed in my chimney before a terrible repair job was covered with a layer of mortar. DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM! Stay away from them if you want to save money and time. Mike first came to give me an estimate by walking around the house while I explained what needed to be done. He gave me an estimate of $10,000 and mentioned that if I wanted to fix the small roof in the front, it would be an additional $1,000. I told him I would think about it and get back to him. When he returned for a second look, he said the first chimney if nothing connects it we will close it if something connects it we will rebuild it (which he refused to rebuild it and he said if I want to rebuild it I need to pay extra $1400) and the tuck pointing under the second chimney required the chimney to be removed and rebuilt, raising the total to $14,000. Even though I received lower estimates from others, I trusted Mike and decided to go with him. We went to his car, where he wrote the proposal, but I didn't realize at the time that he left out the small roof area we had previously discussed. I signed the contract, and he told me they could start the following week. After I handed him the check, Mike suddenly said his foreman had called, and they couldn't start next week, but in three weeks instead. I was frustrated but decided it wasn't a big deal since the work was outside and wouldn't affect my tenants too much. After that day, Mike never called to give me updates. Three weeks later, I called him to ask when they would start, and he said he would call me back, but never did. I called again four hours later, and he said his foreman would call, but that didn't happen either. I called the next day, and Mike's phone went straight to voicemail. I contacted the Second City Roofing office and explained the situation. Someone there said they would get back to me, and a few hours later, Mike called saying they couldn't start that week, but would begin mid-next week. I was still patient, trying to keep things cool. When I called again the following Tuesday for an update, Mike said he would come by with his foreman to inspect the bricks needed for my place, and they would start Thursday. At this point, I had waited almost a month, so I told him if they didn't start by Wednesday, I would want my money back. They finally started on Wednesday, but Mike never inspected these bricks with his foreman as he said. When the work was done, Mike didn't offer to do a walk-through to review the job. He came to collect the final check without a ladder, so I refused to pay until he did a proper walk-through. The next day, he brought his foreman, and we did the walk-through, after which I gave him the last check. This whole experience was incredibly frustrating. The delays, poor communication, and lack of professionalism were unacceptable. I will never work with them again. read more

He explained what would be done, presented samples of product, and prepared a detailed estimate. He was very professional - no high-pressure tactics. I also want to mention Antonio Sanchez, who supervised the project. His roofing crew was prompt, worked diligently, and they did a beautiful job, as well as a meticulous clean-up afterward. Very highly recommend Second City. They handled the demolition of my rooftop deck, as well as installed a new roof, siding and deck. The estimate was reasonable, and after the first project (demo) was complete, Ed sent a coupon to use for any other work with the company. Marc is great to work with--always proactive in following up and answering my many questions (I also appreciate being able to text back and forth and with Marc over the course of the project, versus playing phone tag). The demolition of the existing roof deck turned out to be much more extensive once it began (including removing a hot tub) but Marc + team handled and completed the extra work without an increase in my estimate or added costs. Second City was amazing to work with. I wanted to do a full rebuild of a two story porch. A lot of companies wouldn't do a metal version, but Second City was able to get the job done. We also ended up redoing the siding for the whole house, and they did a beautiful job with everything from start to finish. They recommended an architect to work with, had two excellent crews doing the different parts of the job, and were very responsive and reliable. I mostly worked with Luis as lead on the project and he was always patient and willing to talk through things. I called Second City Roofers, along with 2 other companies for an estimate on new roofing and siding on the house I just bought in March. Of the three companies, only Second City Roofers really impressed me. Steve came out, took a look around the exterior, then came inside and went into the attic to see what the roof looked like from the inside. Much more thorough than the other two companies. One company only looked at the exterior, and the other called me and said they had just been there to look and that they would have an estimate ready for me right away.(I was there at the time and no one had come by at all) After going over all three estimates, I ended up going with Second City. Why? Steve was way more thorough, he got me answers quick and when he said he would, and he didn't jerk me around on anything, he just gave it to me straight. He gave me a great deal, and fit me into their schedule pretty quickly. The roofing team came out on Monday. My house is 2 stories with both a front and back porch, as well as some fairly steep areas on the roof. The guys had it all done by about 11am that Wednesday. I was pretty surprised how quickly they worked. I wasn't expecting it be done so fast. The old owners of the house had left some stuff behind in the backyard when they moved out, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that when the roofers left, not only did they clean up after themselves, they actually left the backyard cleaner than it had been when they initially showed up! The siding didn't start until the following week, and took a little bit longer than expected, but it was well worth the wait. I work nearby, and come home for lunch every day, and it was always interesting to see the amount of progress made in the time between going to work and coming home for lunch, and then again coming home at the end of the day. The guy were super polite, very helpful about any questions I had, and just a general pleasure to deal with. And my dog liked them too, so that was definitely one less worry! The work done has managed to make my 115+ year old house look much younger, especially the siding. This old house has some fairly uneven walls, but the new siding makes that unnoticeable. I have gotten tons of compliments on how great the house looks, from my neighbors, the pastor for the church behind my house, and coworkers who drive past my house on their way home. I worked with Casey for siding on family room, whole house gutters, down sprouts,soffit and fascia, roofing over the family room. Here is the problem, I would have never known if my neighbors tree didn't fall on my house and through the roof. This is what they found. The gutters and downspout couldn't be saved because they were the wrong size for my roof. Casey told me that if he repaired the roof over the family room he could not guarantee it. So he needed to tear off old shingles replace damaged wood to insure no more leaks. Well my whole roof needed to be replaced from the tree damage and when they tore off everything. They took pictures for my insurance company. I saw damaged wood that should have been replaced by second city. If you let them send your contact online it may get loss. I requested a paper contract and never got it. So they are not returning my calls. I'm still paying for this to the company they work with, Mosaic, and they're just as bad. So please be careful if you choose to deal with these companies. Especially if you are a senior, because they will take advantage of you. They are bad news. read more

Procrastination almost did us in. Me and my wife knew we had a hole in the roof, but we kept putting it off until one night we discovered that "critters" were attempting to move into our crawlspace for the winter. I called a couple of the larger roofing outfits in town, but since it was late in the season, I guess they were too busy for us. I called Second City Roofing and Exteriors on a Wednesday after reading positive reviews on Yelp. I met with Casey like the next day. He was very nice and professional. I told him I wanted a new roof and gutters. He presented me with choices, and a reasonable estimate. I asked him about a time frame seeing that "winter is coming". Casey assured me that they will be done by the end of next week. Needless to say, they came bright and early on the following Thursday with a full crew and they went to work. I went to work, and when I came home, it was dark. I could tell that some work was done. I assumed that they were coming back in the morning to finish. I got up at sunrise to inspect the work they had done and was surprised to discover that THE ENTIRE ROOF was completed and it looked PERFECT! Demo, construction, and cleanup in one day which was so on time because it snowed that night. They didn't work on Friday because of the weather. But I got a call early Saturday morning giving me the heads up that the gutter guys were coming. Victor and Gregorio came out and put the icing on an already perfect cake. Later that day we received a call from Ed Baker, the top guy, asking me if we were happy with the work. Me and my wife are happy with Second City. I stand by what I previously said, when SCC came out, they did NOT give me a written QUOTE, it was a verbal. Of course I signed a contract before the work was done, I didn't say I never got a contract. I have no confidence that trying now will make a difference, besides the damage is done. I'm extremely happy with the work Second City has done for me thus far. My partner and I recently purchased a brick two-flat in Irving Park. Much to our dismay our smaller flat roof (18x8) had serious problems. The seller did a poor patch and hide job leaving us with a water feature in our tenant's back bedroom! Mark, the foreman, came over on last minute notice (on a Sunday!) to help mitigate further water intrusion. He cleared off the remaining ice and remove soaked drywall and insulation inside. Through further inspection we ended up needing additional flashing installed and our gutters were installed all wrong. The result was water running down the back of the siding and behind the flashing straight into the interior! Needless to say it was a highly stressful experience for having just moved in. Mark made the experience the best I could have asked for. Mark was honest and fair. He presented all of our options and the pros and cons for each option. His team was efficient yet through. In a matter of a couple days I had a new flat roof, increased flashing, new heavy duty gutters, and a new interior ceiling with new insulation. I feel the price was reasonable and they were flexible on payment options. This is the beginning of a strong relationship with Second City! I have further tuck-pointing, decking, and roofing jobs that will need to be done and I'll definitely be calling Second City for the work! read more

My Husband called them to request an estimate for a re-roof for our Logan Square condo building. The estimator Mark was 90 minutes late, he even tried to convince my husband to just reschedule the appointment. After rushing through the assessment of our roof, he indicated he'd get back to us in a day. Its been two weeks and we haven't heard anything. We've even called their office for an update and still nothing. I struggle to understand why this company has such high reviews. We hired Second City to install new windows at our home and they did an awesome job! They installed 14 windows in 2days (1 day to allow the caulking to dry). The guys were really friendly and the prices were very reasonable as well. We were going to go with Feldco for our windows but after they was going to charge $9000, we had to do financing but wasn't appproved. Then we called Second City and got the same windows (doubled paned and insulated) for half the price of Feldco - and in half the time of installing them as well. I have several friends that have done business with Second City and they're very confident in the work they do. And now, so am I. I will being hiring them again to replace all the doors in our house next and possibly to do more in the future. I'm a very happy customer. read more

We had a total roof replacement done on the east side of our newer construction condo building. Mark and his crew were ready to go as the spring season started. They promised a week's work max, and they completed in far less time. They were thorough, told us what was recommended, but allowed us to make the decisions we needed for our building. In addition, they were very clean, and managed all the deliveries of material, as well as the haul-away with ease. The price was good, and the ability of the company to help us out with a short term financing plan sealed the deal. As anyone knows who lives in a small condo association, collecting the special assessment is a large part of figuring out the project. My wife and I own a typical Chicago 2 flat with a flat roof. We received several estimates from potential local licensed and reputable roofing companies to replace our flat roof. I felt most comfortable with Second City because of Mark who walked the job with me and submitted his proposal and contract because I was impressed by his expertise and experience. We decided to hire them. Second City was no where near the cheapest quote we received, but since a complete tear off and replacement of our flat roof is a very important and expensive project, we wanted to hire a very reputable and professional company. This is when the problems started. We spent $14,200.00 to, unfortunately, receive a project that lasted more than 2 months to complete- with little to no supervision, multiple problems, constant no-call no-shows by the crew (that had nothing to do with any weather related issues) on specifically scheduled work that I had to make myself available for, and an owner that could not care less, and was more than arrogant and rude to me on multiple occasions. Ed Baker, the President and Owner himself, personally scheduled a final walk thru meeting with me which I appreciated and agreed to. Even Ed himself didn't show up, without even a courtesy call, to his own scheduled meeting that he set with me. I re-arranged my calendar for this meeting. When I called him to ask his time of arrival (I figured he was running late) he immediately cursed and swore at me, then yelled at me thru the phone stating that he was sick of sending his crew to my property to fix their mistakes, and asked me if I would rather him speak to me this way in person face to face, and then said he was going to place a lien on our building. I received a lien release after this horrendous and insulting conversation from him and still wonder why he would ever threaten and treat a customer who spent so much money with Second City this way, and who was always available and flexible for their repeatedly missed appointments to continue their roof replacement project. I am not only left speechless to this day, but more importantly my wife and I are ashamed that we hired this company. read more

My second job using 2nd City. John came out and did the site visit and estimate. Steve was the sales person. Both were knowledgeable and professional. They insulated my laundry room water pipes that are facing an exterior wall in the basement. All pipes were wrapped with electrical heated cables and the walls were filled with insulation to prevent any drafts getting in and freezing. Everything was dry walled, taped, primed and painted. I also had another area in my basement where 2nd city had to remove and rebuild a set of 11 stairs from my main floor to the basement. The workers who came out were very good and cleaned up their mess each day. The drywall and paint job were matched perfectly and they even caulked any cracks. read more

2nd City Roofing just completed a fantastic job on my roof at my 2 story house here in Chicago. I called up to 10 Chicago roofing companies this summer to make appointments for estimates. That was a chore in itself. But 2nd City was one of the few companies that promptly showed up to inspect my roof and write up an estimate while everyone else would call to reschedule or not show up at all. I required an experienced Roofing Contractor to perform a tear-off and replacement of a deteriorated and leaking roof on our 3-story 2-unit building in the St. Ben's/North Center neighborhood. When seeking a contractor, I emphasized keeping the worksite in order and protecting the neighbor's and my property, as the neighbor to the west is only 3 feet from my building. The estimate and proposal from Second City wasn't the lowest, but it was the best value. Steve, the estimator, was very courteous, professional, and thorough to the extent that he sent his foreman to double-check the job site and completely understand the work and materials required so there would be no extra work costs requested later. Their 10-year warranty on their workmanship, added to the material manufacturer's warranty seemed like the best option, where I didn't have to pay extra for an "extended" warranty where I had to deal with a third party for any problems that might come up. The work went extremely well, being completed in only five days during the extremely warm conditions during September, 2017. The neighboring property was well protected, and the crew removed debris from the work site before leaving every day. It is a great feeling to have a new roof for the winter, to remove the buckets from under our family room skylights on the 3rd floor, and to have gutter guards keeping leaves out of our gutters that I couldn't possibly reach on my own. I would recommend this contractor to anyone requiring demanding job site conditions such as this project. read more

The website is vague and simply said residential roofing services. So I decided to call and inquire, potentially looking to set up an estimate. However, when I called the man on the phone- I'm assuming Ed- was nothing but rude and condescending. Here I am, simply asking him to clarify what services they offer and he is scoffing at me over the phone. Even if they did do roof flashing, I would never work with such a beast. read more

You can only leave voicemails - if you are lucky, Dennis will call you back in a couple days. I set up an apt for an estimate and nobody showed up, or even called to cancel. I left a voice mail (because you can never get anyone to pick up the phone). They lost my phone number (twice) and Mark showed up later that afternoon. 1 week later, I still never got the estimate. Needless to say there are better, more organized roofers out there on Angie's List. If they can't do the simple things right, imagine the quality of their work. Oh..I did get a follow up phone call from someone in quality assurance asking what I thought of the estimate/proposal...I said I wish I could respond but I never received it!!! I was told that if I was doing a replacement they could help me but since it was just a repair, the repair dept is too busy to take my job now. Common sense would tell you that anyone that can replace a roof could repair a roof. What he was saying is, "We are going to let the little fish jobs go and go with the big money. I own a commercial retail property in the City Of Chicago. I am receiving a partial SBIF grant from the city to improve the building. With this grant i have to hire professional companies that are licensed in the City of Chicago and insured. I hire the companies pay them for the work they do then i get reimbursed from the city. So i come to angles list and start setting up appointments with a bunch of companies and have them come out. Second City being one of those companies. I called them set up a appointment. The estimator came out i explained to them what i need and told him i need, actually i must, use a professional company to do any work on my building and everything needs to be done right. Also that any work that Second City roofing thinks needs to be done i want it done. My building needs Masonry work, tuck pointing and partial roof tear out. After the estimator comes out takes measurements etc a couple weeks pass and i don't hear anything. I contact them and ask whats going on and i get passed around the office and was told once they get in touch with the estimator i will be contacted and updated. Well guess what i never received a call back. Couple more weeks pass and i tell myself what the heck they have a good reputation and the estimator seemed honest let me try giving these guys the benefit of the doubt. I call the office again and the secretary gave me the estimators number. I call him and tell him who i was and he tells me o the office does want to do your work because its a insurance job. I told him no its not a insurance job like i told you in person i pay you guys and i get reimbursed from the city and you have nothing to do with the city i just need a company thats licenses and reputable to do the work. The estimator says ok let me come out again and see the property. He comes out and meets with my business partner for not even 5 mins and told him ill email the estimate in a couple of days. A couple days go by and still nothing, i call the estimator and he's like it should have been sent out and i gave it to the office text me your email ill make sure you get it. I text him my email and also told him my relative owns a building that needs similar repair done and that he should contact him if they're interested. Days go buy and no email or call back. i called him back twice and i still haven't gotten a answer. I have gotten 3 bids so far and each bid is around $80,000-$100,000. It seems like Second City is too good for a job like this or they can't handle it. Either way they are very unprofessional and i suggest calling any of these companies below, all these companies below have been helpful and professional along the way.
