Had water coming into our basement where the main line comes in--I couldn't tell if it was seepage or a leak so called Mr. Rooter as they showed as open on a weekend. They sent a kid over, he freaked out about the idea of it being the main line, looked at it, said it was likely seepage then continued to freak out saying it'd be over $8k to correctly fix it. Saying OMG a several times acting like it wasn't something that could be fixed. He called his boss and then he applied a fix he wasn't convinced would last. After that craziness's I called a real professional and they handled everything much more rationally, respectfully and professionally--as it's a common issue just the kid they sent hasn't seen it before. Ask a random person off the street for help to apply a patch yourself instead of resorting to calling them. read more

We had a backup in the basement and after routing and camera (which I was never shown) we were told the issue was at the connection of our line and the city's. Was told it would be a $9200 fix involving ripping up the street. Had another company come out and they were able to clear the line which had some roots and showed me clearly that the connection was fine. Dodged the bullet on that mess! I was charged $650 for their service. The other company did the same thing and solved the problem for $375. read more

They came out on a Friday afternoon, all the way to Marengo, worked until after 10pm getting me a new water heater. I had an issue with the temp of my water and came out again today and fixed a problem they never experienced before. Recently had our sewer line sever and collapse coming into the house. Nate quoted us one price if insurance didn't cover damage and another if insurance did. We are Veterans and Nate was adamant about the discount if insurance wouldn't pay and said this three times prior to us having them proceed. Insurance does not cover the repair we needed. Nate made arrangements to meet my husband and the insurance adjuster and never showed and didn't answer texts or calls. We then called Mr Rooter and talked someone they said they would meet and get back to us, nothing. We then attempted number on invoice and again, more run around. Today we receive text from Nate that once an insurance claim is filed they won't apply discount. That was not what he said originally and we filed an insurance claim for the damage the sewer pipe caused for the company that had to mitigate and restore damage that was a result of bad pipe. The horrible part about having such an awful experience w the administration side of this business is the crew that came to house was awesome but it's bad business to promise a discount and then make excuses not to give it. Esp when we would've financed the higher rate had we known we would be responsible for the insurance quoted amount vs self pay. I prefer honesty thank you very much. To date Mr Rooter has not communicated w our insurance and they also took our rake and shovel and fail to return calls and texts on how we get our personal property back. DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE!! DONT USE THIS COMPANY!!! I bought a house a month ago and was having issues with the water backing up into the kitchen sink every time my washing machine emptied. they came and said it was grease built up because of years of laundrt detergent and said they needed to run a machine to flush it out. they charged me 600.00. and never even ran the machine. all they did was flush some water into the pipes to see where it was backing up and put a camera down there. they pulled some crap out of the floor drain and just left it sitting on the floor so my one year old got into it. they never put the drain hose for the washing machine back so when i did a load of laundry after they left my whole laundry room flooded with a half inch of water and damaged pictures and some old books that were in boxes on the floor. and now i had to buy a new sump pump because whatever they did also killed that, which led to the other half of my basement flooding yesterday!! so now im out 600 bucks plus 200 for a new sump pump AND i had my basement flood two times i two different areas from the same company!!!! read more

Make this company your last choice to contact. The tech that showed up appeared to be stoned and proceeded to rout and blast my drain at the restaurant. Gave excuses as to how and why I had a drain problem which had to do with the pipes. They came back a second time since it still wasn't draining and again appeared to be stoned and just blamed it on the pipes. I rented a router myself and did the job and haven't had a problem since. I called Mr. Rooter of McHenry on a Sunday evening after waking up that morning with no hot water and being unable to light the pilot light. I was unable to get someone out that same night, something they advertise they can do but was grateful they could send someone the next day. They were to come between 12 -2 pm but at 3:00 still no one had come. I finally got a call from the manager who told me the person scheduled to come out ran into an issue and they could send another person who was currently in Huntley. He also said he would take $50 off the initial cost which I appreciated.I think he finally arrived around 5-5:30 so at this point I was not very happy. The tech they sent was very young . He was respectful and apologized for the situation. He looked at my water heater and called the customer support of the brand of my unit. They both thought it was one of the connections on the unit used to regulate water temp but the tech did not have a diagnostic meter with him. He told me he would have to get the part the next day or he could install a new unit that night. I wasn't prepared to have to replace the entire unit and said I wanted him to get the part. Gratefully , he called the next morning saying he had the part and by 11:00 am I had hot water again. I was expecting to have to wait out the whole day before I would hear from him or before he would be able to return. I had water coming out of my toilet on a Sunday afternoon. It was not stoppable with plunging. We found Mr Rooter online and called them. A plumber was sent to find the problem ( a broken pipe leading to the septic tank) but could not do the job until Monday morning. The job was finished by a crew of younger guys. I was never given a quote for the work, no written invoice was given. I gave a payment of $1000 on Sunday and I was told that the repair is usually covered by insurance 99% of the time. He said if it is covered the price would be higher because the ins. company has a lot of money. He said my cost would be less if it was not covered. It wasn't and they charged me $5425.00 for the repair. This amount was never told or given time in writing. I ask for the discount that was told to me and was told it's to late now. This was the next morning after the repair. No insurance would have an adjustment that quickly. I paid the amount requested. Not happy with the treatment given to me. Another credible contractor told me the price for a repair such as that should cost about $2600.00 to repair. I was overcharged by this company and only received a (I'm sorry) from someone from the company on the phone when they called to see how the job turned out. Mr .Rooter was selected by home warranty insurance to look at a potential sump pump issue. Mr rooter diagnosed issue as being unrelated to my sump pump and suggested replacement for the ejector pump which was not covered by the home warranty insurance. I had second opinion, from another plumber, whom said there was no issue with the ejector pump. Mr rooter was fraudulently trying to sell me a product that was not needed. In addiction during his visit to my house he left the sump pump unplugged and that resulted in significant water damage to my basement. My rooter has failed to attempt to resolve or restore the damage caused by his workmanship. Beware! read more

Unfortunately I'm not going to be calling Mr. Rooter again. This was a Sunday call to help replace a toilet valve. A guy (I am hesitant to leave his name) came in and looked at what we had done, said we were on the right track and could do it ourselves and specifically said we can use the old nut/bolt (sorry not proper term?) to attach the new valve/supply line. Immediately upon entering the bathroom said "want a quote on a new toilet?" to the toilet that is not even that old, just not in much use so the valve was in need of repair. You don't even know how it functions so why did he try to sell more? He did NOT charge us for this quick info and at first this was appreciated. We followed his instructions but still had a leak. But he rushed out of our house so quickly and gave us his card and asked us to leave him a positive review at the link he was texting my husband. Looked out the window a minute later and he had a girlfriend/wife in the work truck - maybe he just wanted to get out of working on a Sunday when we were ready to pay $80. I had tried to ask a few questions but he talked over me only to my husband - only shook his hand in greeting while I stood there to learn about my house as well. This may not matter to men out there reading this but it's a difficulty women often face with home and auto repairs and it's hard to know you're getting correct and fair info, and obviously feels demeaning. We had to call Black Diamond hours later, who cost 3.5x as much but give trusted work - guess what, you can't use the old bolt/nut piece you must use the new one as the original forms to the copper pipe over time, which we did not have the proper tool to remove. Unfortunately in doing this OURSELVES by his instructions a gasket blew in our water softener when we turned the water back on and now we're looking at a lot more spent to fix all this. Could have cost us $80 but we're $275 deep so far. Now that I write this I recall when my mom's house flooded in 2017 (entire house from a burst pipe), we had them out to check it before insurance work started. A few days later the wife called me shouting that we didn't pay our bill when I gave a credit card by phone...it was charged already but she was clearly calling the wrong account. Weird. As an example, I had to have a water heater leak checked, and they did not even drain the water heater properly. I found this out when I had the water heater replaced by an installer from Lowe's. During a bad thunderstorm, my tenants called late at night that their toilet and shower was backing up. They said it couldn't happen at a worse time, and asked for an emergency service. I called 6 other businesses who after saying they would come out that night, called back to at they couldn't come out for a day. Mr. Rooter got out within 90 minutes. Service was cheaper than last time I had the line cleaned, and it did not come with a huge emergency fee the other service were going to charge me, even for coming out a day later! One star only because I am not able to give less than that! DO NOT EVER CALL THESE PEOPLE! They do not warranty work as stated! They rodded a drain for us. One week later it backed up again. While they did come back, and rodded it out again, they now want another $1150 for coming back. They said we needed to dig into our concrete basement floor to replace a pipe and if we didn't want to do that - they would not warranty their original work - even though they never told us this prior to rodding out the drain the first or second time. Originally told us we needed to install a cleanout in front of the house and took a $2000 deposit for the work - which was never done. They are now refusing to return our $2000 deposit. Have not received one response from the owner Jeff Fendt after leaving a phone message with the office and email explaining what was going on. CALL ANYBODY ELSE!! While they were looking into our problem, they took off the downstairs toilet without even emptying the water first. Pulled a towel out of a drawer to clean it up with (without asking or telling anyone) then after cleaning up the toilet water - put the soaking wet towel back in the drawer they found it! Did not reset the toilet correctly or tighten the supply line correctly so we had water all over the floor in the morning. My husband was able to reset the toilet and tighten the line himself. I just want to warn other people so you don't end up like us - fighting to get our $2000 back from a company that will not respond. read more

Refused to rod the system from the point I needed it to be from and stated the I needed to dig up the front yard and install a cleanout. I called another local guy who was great. He DID do it successfully the way I wanted it done and was WAY less expensive than these guys. Mr. Rooter took the easy and most expensive route for what ended up being a routine rodding. This is the biggest rip off ever! Slight leak in the basement. I knew where the blockage was but could not get access to it with the snakes you get at home improvement centers. Wife called these scam artists and scheduled appointment. Yes they gave a "free" estimate. $125 to video scope the drain tile and additional $425 to conventionally snake it or $855 to air pressure and open the block in the entire drain tile. Now I would think that a legit business person would recommend the video scope to identify the problem and recommend a solution based on the findings. And, apply a percentage of the video charge to the solution. Not these guys. A la carte! I was out of town and wife went with power purge to clean the entire drain tile. Dislocated a piece of landscape cloth and left in 25 minutes. And I still have a leak in the same location!!! There is NO WAY they did the entire drain tile. DO NOT use these guys. read more

I call mr. Rooter on July 28th because I had a sewage backup in my basement. I explained the situation to the person who answered the phone but when they sent the repairman to my house he seemed very surprised but I had sewage on my basement floor. He had on nice tennis shoes I asked him if he had other shoes to wear and he said no. He quoted me a price of $425 to fix the problem. I question how high the price was but since I know nothing about Plumbing I had no clue what the repair was going to be. He was at my house less than 20 minutes and that includes doing all of the paperwork and sending me an email receipt afterwards. He said that he dug out some wipes from the sewer drain downstairs. I explained that we just moved here in April and we have never used wipes and questioned if they could be from the previous owners. He said they could and I asked him if he was sure the problem was fixed then if he just pulled out a few wipes. My concern of course was that there were more. He never asked me to flush toilets or run water, and when I questioned him on this he said that he had a hose down there and ran water down the sewer drain and that everything was fine. After he left I went downstairs to bleach the floors and found the sewage all over my furnace room still. I know that it is not their job to clean the sewage mess but one would think that if he had the hose hooked up down there as a courtesy he would have sprayed the sewage towards the drain. Remember I did pay $425 for 15 minutes of work. I called and complained and was treated rudely. 5 days later I had the same problem. This time I call Arrow in Woodstock and they sent two men out, spent an hour on the sewage line outside my house, had me run all of my faucets, bathtubs, and flush all of the toilets on several occasions. I paid almost half the price for the service. Those two men from Arrow did not leave my house until they were sure that the problem was solved. I understand that a business owner can't be on every job site so I tried to get a hold of the owner of mr. Rooter on five different occasions. I explained the situation each time I called and was assured that he would call me back. He never has. Yesterday when I called I told them that I had been waiting to leave a Yelp review until I saw how this business owner was going to handle the situation. Again, I understand that a business owner does not see how the technicians work on a job site and was giving him a chance to make things right. I was told once again that he would definitely call me today but I have not received a call. I would not recommend mr. Rooter to anyone. The service was absolutely terrible and more importantly the business owner seems to have no interest in his customers. Worst service ever! read more

We had leakage coming from our upstairs toilet to our basement. Nothing major but definitely needing to get fixed ASAP. They were extremely nice and helpful over the phone and had someone out within 45 minutes to inspect the situation. It was actually the owner - Jeff- and he was so helpful and communicated all the problems through the entire fix. He had to come back a few hours later but showed up even earlier than he expected! :) He checked out multiple things that didn't even pertain to the original problem and gave us some great tips with some potential plumbing issues we might have in the future as well as general water tips with having city water in our area and a septic system. Looked up online and part that was replaced under 100.00 so I got charged 325.00 in labor for a few minutes then technician had the wires mixed up on the gas valve fixed it myself and the tech claimed he had made a mistake I fear it was a scam into trying to have me buy a new water heater! Had Mr Rooter out today. I was pleased that they could have someone on site same day! The two guys were very polite but I felt not very experienced. They offered me three options for my toilet problem - good, better, best! I needed a replacement for the flush mechanism - that was the good option for what - $236. I called another Plumbing company while they were still here and got a price of $115 for the same job. I called the main office to complain. They couldn't match the price but were ok to split the $70 trip charge with me instead of waiving it. So now I'm out $35 and a toilet that still doesn't work,! I have the other plumber coming tomorrow to fix it! If you use this company get a quote up front! They are definitely over priced!! FRUSTATED and DISAPPOINTED!! Get a detailed quote prior to service! Mr. Rooter was at our home to replace a leaky ball valve in our basement. They stayed for exactly 1hour (20 minutes actual service, 40 minutes to wait for the water to be turned back on) and as a result, I was charged $570. I requested a detailed invoice and was not provided with one. I discussed with another contractor and looked online to find that the cost of the part (retail) was $30. When I called to request a breakdown of services, the woman was extremely rude on the phone. She basically told me the cost was not about the labor or the part (two items I have always been billed for as a standard by contractors elsewhere) but instead the cost was I was paying was for their extensive expertise. She basically told me I could go to school and see what it cost to learn the skill and then decide what it was worth. I found that to be extremely condescending and found her apathetic nature and curt tone to be a huge disservice to a customer who was simply trying to get a cost breakdown. Shouldn't the cost be representative of the individual job and not a blanket upcharge for the technician's skill level? That didn't seem like an unreasonable ask to me, but apparently expecting to pay based on a labor rate and material cost is not how they operate and makes me the bad guy. Called this company for help with a water softener issue on a Saturday morning. I needed a leak fixed on a tube that connects to the tank. I asked if while they were there I could get a quote to remove it completely since we don't even use it but to just fix it for now. They sent someone out that morning. He quoted me $735 to remove water softener unit. He told me how he was going to try to fix the problem for now. I explained that we had already done that ourselves and it only lasted a few days. He assured me that he could get the problem fixed if he did it so I said ok. That night the tube he "fixed" was spraying water everywhere again. I call to the company again Sunday morning. I explained that the problem was not fixed yesterday. He explained that to have it fixed correctly I had to have it removed. I told him that is fine and agreed to the $735. He said he would send a tech out that morning to take care of it. I receive a call from the technician once he's there and he tells me there is nothing he can do and it needs to be removed. I explained that I knew that and agreed to the price on the phone already. He further explains that it is not something he can do today and the gentleman that was at the house yesterday quoted me incorrectly and it would be about $1250.00. He told me I would have to schedule it during the week and it would take multiple people to do the job since the water heater would have to be drained and moved to get to the water softener and remove it. After all the back and forth with this company and nothing getting accomplished to fix the water problem at hand I decided to call another company. I spoke with someone Monday morning and they had a gentleman at my house to give me a quote just a few hours later. They quoted me $495 for the same job. Left me without a main bathroom over the weekend while I did all the work trying to make sure the new toilet would fit. Well my bathroom looks nothing short of a toilet in your local oasis, putty and gaps everywhere. And then said hopefully this will hold up, and it won't start to rock back and forth. You will have to call another plumber if that happens. They say that because I would rather build an outhouse outside then call them back to do any work here and I let them know that. I wish I read the reviews before I called Mr. Rooter to fix my water heater. I got all the same treatment as most of the bad reviews. I needed a water heater changed which also served as my heating system for my condo. After the initial setup, the hot water worked for the house, but the heat for the house did not work. The problem ended up being that the pipeline for the heating system is a closed-loop and needed to be filled with water and bled of air. They had no knowledge of this and fumbled through many attempts trying to pump water into this pipeline. They were not able to purge the air out of the pipes over the course of 3 weeks. The end result was they couldn't fix the problem. They claim that "everything to do with plumbing and water pipes is under warrant." I never saw reimbursement on any of the labor even though they never finished the job. I called the owner (Jeff) twice to see if I can get some credit back to cover some of the expenses to bleed the system. Both times he said he would call me back. I'm still waiting for that call. Overall, I'm very dissatisfied with their knowledge and ability to get a boiler heating systems working, and even more disappointed in their professionalism to cover expenses when they cannot get something to work. I hired Lifeline Plumbing from East Dundee who sent out a knowledgeable guy who has done this setup before. He was able to get the air purged out of the pipeline and the system running. Owner Jeff Fendt came to try to clear my kitchen drain which was not draining, they had to fill in for Cook County office since they could not accommodate me in time. He rodded my kitchen drain pipe and charged me and told me I needed new pipes because he hit something hard. Only after he left my home I found a broken rod in the pipe! I was not informed, no communication! You do not leave a job when something is wrong and not explain it to the customer. I called and they said they were going to tell me in the morning because they thought I might be unhappy. They may have never told me, since the average person never checks anything. What poor customer interaction. Now they say they are going to fix this issue tomorrow mid-afternoon, we will have to see what that entails. Day 2 update: Same guy returned and cut a foot off my metal drain pipe, removed broken rod, and rodded with a smaller rodder, he but did not replace it as he said he would, and did not reconnect anything and ran no water to test his rodding. He wanted an additional $70 despite agreeing to the $189 price for the service before starting work on day 1. Did not finish the job, but thinks he deserves to get paid and wants even MORE money and asks for it even before finishing the job. Unreal. He came unprepared again with no camera, no degreaser and paper towels to clean up his mess, and left without finishing the job and did not tell me he was leaving then his office staff Trish called me a liar about my Advantage Plan membership I was given by Kim in the Cook County Mr. Rooter office. She also pretended that I was refusing to pay when they already took my credit card the night before. Of course they refused to get Kim on the phone to clear up the confusion and talked to yet another person which confused things more. Cook County Mr. Rooter sub'd out this job to McHenry and they should never have done so, and took no responsibility in this unprofessional experience. How amateur of BOTH offices.
