From the moment I stepped into this cozy spot, I instantly felt like I was back home in Puerto Rico. Just like our island, it's small, but filled with a huge heart. We spent time chatting with them about our families, childhood memories, and how happy we are that they've kept our culture alive right here in the Montrose area of Houston. We enjoyed a true Puerto Rican feast: arroz con gandules, pernil, mofongo con camarones al ajillo, pollo frito, empanadas de yuca y masa, flan de coco, limber de guanábana, and of course, more food to take home because we couldn't have it all at once! My personal favorite were the limbers with traditional flavors I don't recall ever having a limber outside of PR. This is a counter-service eatery, where you can see all the freshly prepared dishes right in front of you. Topped the delicious meal with Malta & Flan. The parking is very sparse and the dining room only has 3 small tables and some seats along the wall. There is a midtown "sculpture" of the city name in big letters covered in art for tourists to take pictures right next to the restaurant. The restaurant is also located right across the street from a CVS on one side and several yuppie pretentious restaurants on another side of the street. This location features a covered outdoor bar like one might find at an upscale resort or in the Bahamas on the Gray St. side. There is also a cashier and order and pick up windows on another side of the building like at similar fast food style Hispanic restaurants in TX. Their menu is a bit limited with mostly street and full sized tacos, but is pretty standard for Tex-Mex fare. We got the 5 street tacos and a standard margarita to go. You can customize the meats and toppings on the tacos. Sadly La Calle does not seem to have an option for grilled onions like similar places, but at least had raw onions that came on the side. From the variety of meats we got pollo, asada, and pastor. Each was seasoned very well and had good flavor. None of the meats was too spicy like at some similar places. The margarita was placed in a sealed cup and bag for to go transport as in accord with local laws. The styrofoam cup kept the margarita frozen even in the Houston heat for the 20 min walk back to the hotel. Not sure if they actually gave us the standard margarita we ordered or some other flavored one because the taste was off, but it was not a bad drink. However, standard margaritas taste better elsewhere. The tacos were probably about the going rate, but the margarita seemed expensive, but might be because you can order S, M, or L and we got a M, so perhaps costs more than a standard sized cup elsewhere. There were outdoor benches to eat at or the covered bar area, but we had to go. Overall, would come back here again and recommend you give them a try. There were a few sketchy characters-customers as this is still a downtown area, but to go solves this problem.
