Mr. Tequila (along with Mr. Taco) catered our daughter's graduation party. We had over 80 people attend, and let's just say Mr. tequila was well over five stars!! Well I've finally made my way over here and to be honest I'm not impressed! The food was below mediocre. I spent $102 on nothing basically. Then they have 16% or 18% gratuity automatically! My partner ordered a classic margarita on the rocks and it tasted like water! Absolutely no flavor!! Yes i sent it back and the waiter seemed surprised like "no flavor". I ordered a steak quesadilla dinner that came with 2 sides and 2 small and I mean small pieces of quesadilla. She ordered the nachos that came with steak. I also order a small queso which he forgot to bring. So I ended up telling him about that. Absolutely no napkins on the table or no silverware. Then when the waiter realized we didnt have anything he brought 2 napkins to the table. 2!! No this place wasn't packed it was empty, a child running around the restaurant. Just discovered Mr Tequila while exploring Freret Street and I was impressed! We wondered in after 6pm on a weekday and quickly found a seat at the bar as happy hour was kicking off. As we ordered other locals also arrived seeking their favorite tables. On this visit, we kept it simple and ordered drinks and several appetizers to share. We enjoyed Queso, Tamales and LOADED Chicken Fajitas Nachos that defied expectations in every way. Serious we loved these Fajita Nachos so much we plan to visit again just for another taste. One of our other friends told us this place had "decent" tacos but we decided to go anyway. Lol Wasn't very crowded but the service was soooo SLOW. I mean snails pace..guacamole was good. We ordered frozen mango margaritas. The waiter dropped off 2 obviously melted drinks. Not sure why he thought this was ok. It was very apparent these were not frozen yet. This review is based on the lunch we have at this place. They do have some lunch specials fromm 11 to 3pm which are affordable. We got a chicken quesadilla lunch which included a medium size quesadilla, rice and refried beans plus Pico. It was super tasty and the right amount of food for lunch. The lunch itself was $13 which wasn't bad. They give you free chips with salsa and I must say they were pretty good! We have been to other Mexican restaurants and the chips are not usually fresh. For free chips they were pretty awesome. We also order some churros for dessert which comes in a set of 4 churros, ice cream and caramel sauce. The combo was pretty good. Came here on Mardi Gras Tuesday and got seated after a short wait with a group of 10! The servers were really nice and we got a ton of free salsa and nachos to munch on as our food came. Good: I really liked my taco salad as well as the enchilada trio that I shared with my friend - the flavor is really good and portion sizes are huge here so we didn't finish what we got in the end. The margarita tower was also super large and a good value - we got 2 of them for our group of 10 and the mango and king cake flavors were my favorites. Bad: The food arrives pretty slowly so you'll have to wait some time for your food to get there. I thought the queso was just alright from my perspective. Found my new Taco Tuesday spot. Great place with great deals. Happy hour is from 3:00-6:00 so perfect for after work. Margaritas are only $4 during happy hour. Also, I recommend going on Tuesdays when tacos are only $1, yes you read that right $1 tacos. You must order five to get the deal but 5 $1 tacos, who can beat that?! And the tacos are very good! The staff is friendly and knowledge on the menu. Food was out within minutes of ordering so you will not have to wait long if you're hungry. I was excited to eat at Mr. Tequila's. It's located in the Freret corridor, which is abuzz. The decor and seating were generic and unimaginative. The food too. There were a few issues with my first (and likely last) visit: 1. Improper wearing of mask (below the nose). The waitress approached our table with her nose in plain view. I motioned for her to put her mask in place but it was clearly too slack to stay put. Unacceptable. In food service, it is incumbent upon those serving food and interacting with customers to be vigilant with masking up. #Fail 2. Attention to detail. We each ordered Margaritas - 1 frozen, 1 on the rocks, both WITH SALT. Of note, the waitress was also the bartender, which was not optimal since we were seated at a table - and not at the busy bar. Not only did she bring both margaritas without salt but she offered to pour salt into the drinks to remedy her mistake. #Fail. I asked her to please bring two salted glasses back, which she did, reluctantly. The second round was the same order with the exact same result - no salt. Thankfully, a different waiter saw this unfolding and he resolved the issue. Overall, the margaritas were just too sweet, with the smallest kick. 3. The food was average. The chips and salsa were ok but the nachos tasted weird - like they were fried in old oil. I ordered their carnitas hard tacos (3). It was absolutely the most bland pork that I've ever eaten. EVER. Aside from a garnish of cheese and iceberg lettuce, there was nothing more to the tacos. When I asked for hot sauce, the waitress initially said they didn't have any. (?) I was shocked and proceeded to name options, like Louisiana, Tabasco, Cholula, or any other variety. Finally, the gentleman who fixed the margaritas emerged from the kitchen with a brand new bottle of hot sauce. When he attempted to hand me the whole bottle, I said to please just put a small amount in a disposable cup because...COVID. In any case, there was no saving those tacos from Bland town. Final verdict: This is the perfect place for students (not looking for quality cuisine) to grab food and keep it moving. You can eat cheaply at Mr. Tequila. While checking out taco Tuesday deals here on Yelp I found Mr. Tequila! He's cute or whatever (joking lmbo). But they have one of the best taco Tuesday deals I've seen yet. My sister and I went after work. There's street parking on freret so you understand how that can be. At the time we went in we'd immediately be seated in this decent sized restaurant. We were pleasantly greeted and ordered some margaritas...it was happy hour so we had a few each. You can tell they used a margarita mix as it was super green and tasted like a mix...it was still good and after 3 I had a little buzz. We ordered queso for an appetizer...it was really creamy and it stayed creamy even as it cooled. I hate when quesos get all thick and clumpy so this one passed my test. The service was super fast too. The taco deal was 5 for $7.50, I got shredded chicken, chorizo, grilled chicken, shrimp, and ground beef. The chorizo tasted kinda fatty and wasn't as flavorful as I expected. It had oil pouring from it. The grilled chicken, beef, and shrimp were pretty good. My favorite was the shredded chicken! Mr. Tequila first caught my eye when I caught a glimpse of the sign driving by and thought, "Plankton is opening a restaurant in my neighborhood? Shouldn't it be called 'The Chum Bucket'? And why does he have two eyes?" I looped around the block and realized that no, that wasn't SpongeBob's little friend and erstwhile employer on the sign, but rather a jalapeño pepper greeting me with open arms. "Ok, I'll bite," I thought, and now months later our gang of three walked over for dinner. This was a Goldilocks experience: for Mother, not good at all, for Baby (actually in high school), the "quesadilla was good, but I did not like the guacamole"; and Father (me) enjoyed the fajitas and the margarita in the giant glass. Mother found the guacamole repellent and actually had it taken away, but only after the other two had eaten about a third. We all agreed it had a strange taste. Mother said "it turnt", but what I tasted was strangely reminiscent of egg salad (sounds gross, but was actually interesting, to me; what gave it that quality, I wondered?), and those who know Mother understand her lifelong inability to get near eggs or anything reminding her of eggs. Baby did not like the guacamole, and Father thought it was ok, save for the strange taste, and was planning to put it on his fajitas until Mother had it taken away. (Boo.) I noted that wasn't much guacamole for seven bucks, about one cup in volume. The combo fajitas were well-seasoned, a generous mixture of steak, shrimp, and chicken. (I considered the mushroom, and I wish I'd asked whether I could do the combo with mushroom in place of one of the meats). The side platter had proper refried beans, rice, and dollops of pico, sour cream, and that guac. Mother's enchiladas were nicely textured but came with a dark sauce that reminded her of bbq. She "did not care for that". Baby's quesadilla was on target and fully consumed, which is her seal of approval. The one item all agreed on was the chips & salsa: chips being warm and crisp, the salsa bearing a nice kick. Mother noted the margarita did not seem to have enough alcohol to make it interesting, and Father agreed, maybe; it seemed fine to him before she said that. Suddenly it did seem to him a little weak and sweet--maybe it was, or maybe it was the power of suggestion. Suffice to say he enjoyed it and got a go-cup to finish it off at home. After all, this was a happy hour special and not top-shelf. Mr. Tequila took over a space that had been occupied by two previous restaurants (Freret Beer Room being one of them) that I had intended to try. Alas, those succumbed to COVID19 or hurricanes or just not being all that popular before I could set foot inside. I expect Mr. Tequila to last, though, based on the full house that was dining that evening. Special shout-out to the web site designers, those photo and video sequences make me want to go back, especially to try the taco Tuesday specials. I probably will, but leave Mother and Baby back in the den. Atmosphere was friendly and genuinely welcoming, and the service was prompt. As soon as Mother brought up the (her) guac issue, our server picked it right up and took it off our bill without further question. As for ratings, Mother probably would be down around 1 - 2 stars (never again), Baby around 3-4 stars (ehh, ok), and Father puts it at four stars, but acknowledging the other two brings me to 3. Those street tacos really do look good, though, so maybe I'll revisit both the restaurant and this rating in due time. read more

The deal for taco tuesday is if you buy 5 tacos, they will be $1.50 a piece making it about $7.50 for five. They also had drink specials but I didn't get anything. They serve you complimentary chips and salsa which is RARE in the city of NOLA. We ordered the small queso which is enough for about 3 people. Then I did the street tacos with al pastor, steak and barbacoa. Yall....do not skip this barbacoa. It was the best one I had! 10/10 would recommend all five tacos with barbacoa. Might be my new favorite spot for tacos on a Tuesday. They are so good. I had the al pastor tacos and shredded chicken. The tacos were very seasoned. Also the wait wasn't long at all for the food. For my 5 tacos (including a side of salsa verde and guacamole) I paid 9.75 (before taxes). It's not the CHEAPEST food deal on a taco Tuesday but it's definitely not the most expensive so worth it I'd say. It's a nice quaint little place with very nice/kind waitresses and waiters. Some of the deals that are currently on Yelp might not be the same as what's online though.
