This morning's breakfast club adventure took us to Middleburgh. After paying $.25 for two hours of on street parking, the first of many bargains of the morning, we went into Mrs. K's. This is the kind of place that you really don't find anymore. Tables covered in what my mother would have called "oil cloth" plastic tablecloths, people wandering and talking at tables giving a feeling like everybody in the place knew one another. You immediately felt comfortable. The coffee was strong and hot and the refills came readily. There was a specials board as pictured, but you didn't really need it. The menu was extensive and one thing very noticeable immediately were the prices. An omelette that might have been $10-$12 at the usual places we go was between six and nine here. Home fries are two dollars extra. They are willing to do cottage cheese as an alternative. I got a vegetable omelette with cheese. I realized they never asked me what kind of cheese just assuming it would be American. I'm not overstating to say that this may be the best omelette I've ever eaten. It was fluffy, it was extremely hot, full of Mixed vegetables and just delicious. The sourdough toast was great and perfectly toasted. As we were leaving, I asked the waitress to give the cook a message and she looked concerned until I told her to pass along that the omelette was incredible. Her response, which I should've expected given the nature of the place was "yes, my mother makes the best omelette ". Of course the waitress and the cook were mother and daughter. Fits perfectly with the vibe. My only regret is that Middleburgh is such a long drive. I will be back and it will not be that long before my next breakfast. read more

Mrs K's Kitchen in the beautiful Village of Middleburgh is like many small town restaurants, more than a place to dine but a meeting place. Walking in you are greated by many large tables along with 4 tops with friends and families together having breakfast or lunch. It's a destination where people get together and share stories of or fuel up before tackling whatever the day holds for them. Mrs K's features normal breakfast and lunch fare, they are known for their generous portions, fluffy pancakes and a changing menu of homemade pies featuring fruits from the surrounding farms. We decided on takeout before tackling some yard work on a recent Saturday morning, pancakes, waffles and 2 BEC sandwiches on rolls. For the encore their strawberry rhubarb pie and strawberry shortcake topped with whipped cream. All delicious but I found the waffles had bit of perhaps nutmeg that I could do without. I don't feel you can go wrong stopping in for a bite before or after touring the shops on Mainstreet of the surrounding area. Try Mrs K's for a real touch of Americana. read more

While trying the eateries of this area, this place was up next for our Saturday morning breakfast. It's like eating in someone's home kitchen, which is a cute gimmick. That morning, we tried: Apple pancakes, which were light and fluffy, had slices of fresh apples seared into the bottom. Slightly tart, balancing the sweetness of the syrup, these were good. My partner had a veggie omelet, which was OK, but more like typical if you're used to diner grub. The home fries were good, but just room temperature so...I'm not sure where they came from, but it wasn't just off a griddle. Service was good, but with Mrs. K and another server handling a full house of 40 or so, they were a bit in the weeds (busy) making it difficult to be attentive. We came here for Sunday breakfast with some local friends who know the place well. Of course we had to have Mrs. K's famous Blueberry Pancakes a d they lived up to the hype. The place was clean and as jumping as COVID restrictions would allow. The staff was attentive, my coffee cup was rarely empty and we were not rushed. Mrs. K's has the feel of a place that has not needed to change a thing over the years - they got it right long ago and are sticking with their winning strategy. We will return. read more

This business is one of the oldest businesses left in town, they have a very large following and always are crowded Patty does a great job in running the place and now her daughter even helps her. They make all homemade pies and desserts and all their food is homemade great soups you won't be disappointed if you go there for lunch or dinner for that matter. They have help and they're quick and delicious. A very pleasant atmosphere, everyone seems to be cheery and happy which is hard to do everyday of the week. So if you're looking for a quick breakfast lunch do stop in there they always have specials and definitely grab a bowl of soup. read more

Mrs. K's is on the main road stretch and near some flea markers and hiking trails, putting you right back on the road to your next destination. We have been visiting middleburgh about 3 or 4 times a year every year for more then 20 years now. One of the highlights of every trip is stopping at Mrs K's for breakfast or lunch. Classic local home style restaurant where the food is great, the people are friendly and you hate to leave when your done eating. Favorites are..... eggs over medium with home fries and a order of biscuits and gravy on the side, spaghetti and meat sauce, the middleburger, and my kids always get hot chocolate and occasional cherry pie for breakfast. Discovered this gem about a year and a half ago while driving through Middleburgh. Now we visit at least once a month when we are weekending upstate. We drive about 17 miles for a healthy serving of Mrs. K's down-home hospitality and delcious breakfasts. They never disappoint. Nor does she! This woman has people skills! Makes everyone feel welcome, even the out-of-towners like us. Blueberry pancakes are delicious, especially when the berries are in season and Mrs. K picks them herself. Spinach and cheese omelette is another favorite. There's always something good on the specials board. Or just go with your "usual" breakfast, whether it be french toast, eggs, etc. The place can get busy, but Mrs. K always lets you know if there will be a wait for your food. After a long, slow westbound drive on NY 145 from Greene County and next to nothing in the way of eating options, it was great to find Mrs. K's. If you're looking for the Ultimate Foodie Precious Hipster Breakfast Experience or something, calm down. This is an old-school American main-street diner. Adjust your expectations accordingly. You sit down and coffee appears instantaneously. This is a good sign. Everything we had was solid, fresh, arrived in good time, with tremendously friendly service...and there are only four items on the entire menu over $10. You could do a whole lot worse. Bring a dime or a quarter for the parking meter. Not all of them work, but at least you can say you tried. read more

Central NY State and the Capital District were once rightly famous for joints like this, where you can park your butt for a couple of hours with your family, have a 1950's style American home cooked meal (inspired by the early German/Dutch settlers), catch up on local events with your neighbors and an archetypal Mom/Grandmom proprietor. Alas, they are fast disappearing. If you are impatient and in a rush, this is the wrong place for you. Mrs. K's is not just about the food, and yes, Mrs. K is still at the helm (with a big assist from her daughter), and they will greet you like a long lost relative when you come in. NYS country cookery from the 50's was influenced by a post-war wave of convenience: lots of tinned vegetables, lard, canned soup (or soup bases), Maggi seasoning, reconstituted gravy, inexpensive cuts of meat in stews -- basically a kind of institutional cooking for the American working masses and farm hands, at dirt cheap prices. As the area gentrifies and rebuilds after successive hurricanes and flooding, Mrs. K's prices are no longer the bargain they once were, but the ambience remains authentic despite upscale competition. Her pies are still homemade, and built from locally sourced, screamingly fresh fruit! The turkey is fresh roasted, and the potatoes (the real deal most of the year) are mashed heaven, although I have had the powdered variety served to me at times in the Spring and early summer. Breakfasts are satisfying because the eggs are very fresh, but the sides (like corned beef hash or bacon) are meh. The pancakes are scratch made (not gourmet mind you) but what you would expect at your moms. I prefer a hot turkey meal at lunchtime, with mashed and gravy, a wedge of pie and coffee. This meal is always a special of the day. It teleports me back to an earlier time when food authenticity was measured by down home sensibility, not "flavor profiles." I leave Mrs. K's with my belly filled and a sense of tradition and family, even if some of the food is lackluster by "foodie" standards. Curiously, one would expect that Middleburgh would be the template community for "farm to table" dining given the abundance of farms in the area. While the region is galloping in that direction, some traditions resist change, and for that I am grateful. read more

Wow, this place is straight out of the 50's, before America learned to use fresh ingredients or for that matter learned how to cook. Driving through Middleburgh we decided to stop for a late breakfast at this cute looking local place. A thing we regretted when we were served with overcooked dry omelettes with some colored bits inside that called itself a western omelette. Not only was the uniform 1/2 inch cubes of potatoes a dead give away that they came out of a box from the freezer but so was their complete lack of flavor. Come on- you call yourself a diner and you can't cook an egg or slice a real potato? The coffee was weak and the same quality as when it cost 10c a cup. read more

I live forty miles from Middleburgh, but I drive out of my way to eat at Mrs. K's on Main Street. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, its tone set by Mrs. K. herself--somewhere, I'd guess, in her late seventies, but still on out on the floor, welcoming diners, taking orders, serving up delicious meals, stopping back to be sure that beef, chicken, turkey, and pork entrees were perfect. And the pies! If I didn't have some sense of shame left, I'd have a slice as an appetizer, and then a second one, a la mode, for dessert. Go there, and leave feeling stuffed and smiling! read more

Stopped here midway in our drive back home from Cooperstown. Wanted something NOT a chain and found this cute place. Very family-like, clean, with plastic tablecloths, coffee mugs ready for your first cup, and a display of old cookie jars. EVERYTHING was clean. Fresh paint, and in every framed picture or certificate, the glass looked as if it had been Windexed that day. I got the Middleburger: cheeseburger with smothered onions on grilled rye. Side of potato salad definitely home made and NOT that sweet deli salad. Service was friendly, efficient, not rushed. We were there noontime Friday. Sounded cute and we needed a place for a quick bite after driving from Cooperstown. Well, the waitress was charming and friendly and told us how great everything was and homemade or home grown, but....We shared a BLT on toasted rye bread, and the bacon was crisp as requested. But the sandwich was mostly lettuce and little bacon and few tomatoes. It wasn't evern garnished with one lonely pickle or a tiny bit of coleslaw. We ordered a side of baked beans and it was terrible--where were Heinz beans!! These were pale brown, one bit of bacon, no sauce and no taste and tiny serving. We saw everyone salting their food and we know why now. We didn't order desserts because we had no room, but would not come back, even to try the roasted homemade turkey or blueberry or apple crumble pies. The prices were low yet because of the food's inferior quality, it wasn't good value. SORRY!. We so wanted to like this palce. read more
