Had a nice late lunch here on our recent trip. (Note that they are often not open at dinner time.) we were told that the food and service were good and that they had a few unusual local ingredients incorporated into their menu. For this reason, I decided to go with an Arnold Bennet skillet that included smoked trout. If you at all like the thought of lox and eggs, then you definitely need to try this one. It also had Parmesan, chives, and crème fraiche mixed in. The taste of this combination on a piece of toast was delicious! And something I would happily enjoy again and at reasonable prices. Plus, it was enough food that I finished it for breakfast the next morning. The seating area looks and feels like a typical NY diner. Our waitress was quick and efficient and the coffee was good and fresh. Especially with the limited number of dining locations in the Catskills area, Phoenicia diner is definitely worth a stop. read more

This diner definitely gets packed, but thankfully, the wait usually isn't too long! The milkshakes were a little disappointing--they mostly tasted like melted ice cream rather than an actual milkshake. The cinnamon roll was the same one I had back in March, but unfortunately, the texture wasn't as soft this time. It was noticeably harder, although it was still generously covered in frosting like before. The scrambled eggs were soft and cooked well, but the biscuits and gravy were pretty heavy. The potatoes, however, were amazing! They were nice and crispy, which I really enjoyed. My daughter really enjoyed her meal. She ordered the French toast, sausage, bacon, pancakes, and eggs, and she was very happy with everything. I had a genuinely uncomfortable experience at Phoenicia Diner because of the repeated and completely unnecessary commentary from our waitress about what I chose to order and eat. It started when I ordered two orange juices. Instead of simply taking the order, our waitress responded, "You going to drink all that?" I found that incredibly off-putting. I'm an adult ordering and paying for my own breakfast--I don't need my server policing or commenting on how much I choose to drink. Then, when I asked if an omelet could come without the onions and cheese, she responded, "Okay, so make your own omelet." I clarified that I simply wanted the remaining two ingredients: ham and peppers. Again, the interaction felt needlessly judgmental over an extremely basic modification. Finally, I left most of the accompanying arugula salad because I don't particularly like arugula. When she came back around, she felt the need to comment yet again: "You're not going to finish that?" At that point, it was a pattern. Once would have been an awkward comment; three separate remarks about how much I ordered, how I wanted my food prepared, and how much I ate made me feel like my eating habits were being monitored throughout breakfast. A server's job is to take an order and provide hospitality, not provide unsolicited commentary on a customer's appetite or food choices. People can also have all kinds of personal, dietary, or medical reasons for what and how much they eat, none of which are a server's business. The food itself may be perfectly fine, but I left feeling scrutinized rather than welcomed. For a restaurant with such a strong reputation, I expected much more professional and gracious service. When I imagine a classic American diner, this is what I picture. You must get the buttermilk pancakes (comes with 5 pancakes, berries, and housemade syrup) and the breakfast burrito. Those were the highlights of the meal. Orange juice is also great, but I'm not sure it's worth the $7 for a cup. We also got the chicken pot pie which has really tender chicken and a delicious slightly salty biscuit. The jalapeño cheddar hashbrowns do taste like a jalapeno popper on the inside, but the crispy fried layer of cheese doubled with the heavy cream cheese filling was a lot. There is a long wait especially if you come on a weekend during peak hours (11AM) but we explored the shops nearby and the world's largest kaleidoscope for 45 mins before we were seated at the counter. Came here for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon and we were worried that there would be a wait but thankfully we got seated right away. The moment I stepped foot in the diner, I was instantly enveloped in a nostalgic and cozy atmosphere. It was full of charm with all the decorations. Definitely what you would picture in those classic movies/shows. Food was 10/10!! I ordered the buttermilk pancakes which is what they are most famous for and for good reason too! Fluffy and light and amazing portions (5 big pancakes with mixed berries)! The pancakes were so good that we bought a bag of pancake mix to take home. My sister ordered the eggs any way and she loved everything that came with it: eggs, choice of bacon or sausage, potatoes, and toast. Everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious and it was hard to decide what to order. They have weekly specials as well. Our waitress Susie was an absolute sweetheart and made our entire experience memorable. That being that we had asked her for some more water and by the time she came back around, someone else had already stopped by and filled up our glasses. She apologized for the delay by giving us a free chocolate chip cookie and it was the best damn cookie I've had in a long time. This was the BEST diner I've been to in a long time. My boyfriend and I are from NJ and drive up to Belleayre for weekend ski trips, and we stopped in on our first morning. From the second we walked in, we were greeted with such a warm welcome. The inside has classic, cozy diner vibes -- booths, counter seating, and even a separate bar area. Our first visit, we ordered over-easy eggs, potatoes, bacon, and sourdough toast. Everything was cooked perfectly, and you could genuinely taste the quality of the ingredients. We loved it so much that we came back the next morning. We arrived right at opening and were treated to warm cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven with homemade cream cheese frosting. We shared one, but I could've easily eaten the whole tray -- soft and doughy inside, slightly crisp outside, and generously frosted. I ordered the "3500" (pancake, French toast, bacon, sausage, and egg), and again, everything was spot on. My boyfriend happily went for another round of eggs, potatoes, and bacon. On our way out, I noticed a Pressed Penny machine. I'm a HUGE collector but didn't have change. When I asked, the waitress went out of her way to find the shiniest pennies so I could make the best ones. It absolutely made my day. If we were locals, we'd be here all the time. It had been a while since I'd eaten at Phoenicia Diner (last was outside, during the pandemic) so I was happy to go on our most recent Woodstock getaway. Eating inside is so much more pleasant. No wait for a table on a Friday late morning. I started with a bloody Mary and a vanilla latte. The flavor of the bloody was really good, but I do wish it was a little bit less chunky while drinking it. The vanilla latte was just OK. We ordered a table pancakes, because you have to when you're here - pancakes are a highlight. We chose buttermilk, but I can curious about the buckwheat. They come with real maple syrup, which is everything to me... so important for me to enjoy my pancakes to the fullest. I was being really indecisive, and I just could not decide what to order. I finally selected Phoenicia Breakfast which came with beans tomatoes sausage, two eggs, sausage and I upgraded to an English muffin. Everything on my plate was delicious, but the food was on the cold end of lukewarm. The beans were actually not warm at all, but the flavor was very good. The English muffin was really tasty for what it was, but it did not remind me of an English muffin. It was incredibly dense, almost more like a crumpet. I did appreciate that it was very generously buttered There's a few things that could've improved, but overall it is an excellent meal and a really fun place to visit. I feel like this place is an icon and it's definitely worth it! We went here because hello, it's a staple of New York mixed with the fact that it was recently featured in a very famous Apple TV television show!!! I would say be prepared to wait because this place is popular. But the staff is used to that! You can drink at the bar while you wait and during nice weather times they have outside seating. There are no reservations, got here around 11 am on a Saturday morning was told an hour wait, which wound up being about an hour and a half. They give you a random number on a vintage key chain. It's an old school feel, with lots of outdoor decor. While we waited we went to the bar section and got fall inspire Aperol spritz's that came with apple cider as well as cappuccinos. This diner is quite a popular destination in the area. It was packed with people and by the time we left, cars had started to park along the highway shoulder because the parking lot was full. You can choose to order from their pick up station and eat outside or wait for a table or bar seating indoors. They initially told us the wait for two would be 25 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 15. I ordered a non-alcoholic mocktail and they served it to me with alcohol. I am pregnant, so this was very distressing, but given people's alcohol sensitivities these days, this is a pretty egregious mistake in general. When I alerted our waitress, there was also no apology or attempt to make things right, so this soured my whole experience of the place. To eat, I had the jalapeño popper hash browns. This was a unique dish that I was excited to try. The hash browns were crispy on top, with cream cheese and stringy potatoes underneath. The dish came with eggs and roasted tomato. The hash brown mix was way too salty so that made the dish hard to eat, but I think it'd be tasty had that not been the case. I also got the pancakes, which were fluffy and served with fresh blueberries and strawberries. They actually paired pretty nicely with the hash brown cream cheese, for a sweet and savory combination. My husband got the arnold bennett skillet and enjoyed it. They have a great menu, so I can see why this place attracts a crowd. However, the issue with the alcohol was unacceptable. read more

This was recommended to us by a friend as the perfect way to start our weekend in the Catskills and I am so happy we listened to her. On a Friday afternoon we got a table right away (which was honestly a surprise because the parking lot was completely packed). This feels like a perfect old school diner with booths, counter seating, tables, and menus along the wall. And then you realize that they have a full bar and there is trout listed on the menu at least 4 times. I love a little old and a little new. We got drip coffees (perfectly hot and strong) and a couple cocktails to properly kick off vaca. My Bloody Mary might have been the best Bloody Mary I've ever had. It was so good! I am craving another just typing this review. I got the Farmer's Skillet with scrambled eggs, which is some variation of my usual at a dinner and loved every bite. I also tried a bite of The Mitchell (a tuna fish sandwich) and agreed it was fantastic. Tunafish should always have pickled in it in my opinion! A great lunch and a great stop. read more

It's a Catskill relic, so it was only right that we went! What a cute little diner!!! We got there right when it opened because its first come, first serve. That was a power move on our part. It started to get packed quickly! The food was good! I got the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were nice and buttery. So soft. The gravy was great, too. It was lacking a TAD bit of flavor. I've always heard from folks in surrounding towns, in not surrounding towns, from people all across the internet even, that Phoenicia Diner is AMAZING and a must-go if in the area. Cons: - I just truly didn't think the food was that great. The shrimp and grits were tasty but nothing special, the burger mac burrito fell apart immediately after receiving it making it super hard to eat. The mac and cheese itself was creamy but lacked flavor and the onion rings were just filled with oil. All the food just seemed extremely heavy and rich. Was this our fault since we didn't get the pancakes? Possibly. But I had such high hopes when the staff raved about these items prior to ordering that it just couldn't meet these high expectations. The decor and vibe in there is of a retro diner, but the food is much more elevated than a typical diner. We stopped in around 2:30pm, after the breakfast/brunch rush and were seated right away. Started with coffees, fresh squeezed OJ, and a giant cookie. I had the jalapeno popper stuff hashbrowns and my husband had the corned beef skillet. Both were unbelievably good, made with fresh ingredients (including house cured corned beef). We went the breakfast route for this meal, but the lunch options around us looked fantastic as well. As someone who doesn't believe social media hype, my friends wanted to check out this place because of the hype so I had no choice but to tag along. They only accept walk in's. Upon requesting a table, we were given a number. Our number was called out on the speaker system when our table was ready. 1 & 1/2...Nah...Like surely countless others I was drawn in here by it's updated classic diner exterior and amazingly scenic location on the curb of the road on a gorgeous stretch of Rt 28 in the Catskills, along with the jammed packed parking lot on a glorious September late morning one Friday. I'd also heard and read about this place here and there through the years in the context of talking with NYC friends or reading NYC periodicals about visits and moves up into the Catskills that I knew what I was walking into, a longtime local institution purchased and spiffed up and given the hipster treatment by some of many NYC transplants that have flooded into the region in the last decade plus, a trend which was turbo-charged during the pandemic and it's aftermath. Unfortunately what I experienced wound up being what I consider to be a worse case scenario when it comes to Upstate gentrification. I had been craving a classic upstate diner breakfast of corned beef hash so I sidled up to the lone available seat at the packed counter in the still classic looking albeit slightly Memphis-Milanoified dining room, scanned the menu and selected the corned-beef skillet. What arrived was decidedly not hash but an extremely half-assed alternative, which surely ranked as one of the worst breakfast's I can remember having anytime recently and likely also one of the worst meals I've had this year. Rather than properly cooked hash it was a random assortment chewy fatty grizzly chopped up scraps of corned beef carelessly and joylessly tossed with random peppers onions, eggs poached as requested and extremely undercooked cubes of potatoes, along with some random mystery flavors I was unable to recognize other than the fact that they were extremely prominent and very unpleasant. I probably made it through about 1/4 of the gross plate before calling it a day and requesting a check. As if the horrible meal wasn't enough to make me loath this place, it's important to note that this nasty plate of thoughtless slop, alongside the rest of the menu was priced at a Manhattan scale of $18, surely out of the budget range of most of the actual longtime residents the community and catering primarily to wealthy NYC transplants and visitors and further reinforcing and exacerbating the affordability crisis that has resulted for longtime residents as a result of these trends. There's still a great many longtime beloved local diners and hole in the wall greasy spoons across the region that not only support longtime residents and local traditions but also surely have much much better food, it's surely our duty, especially for us visiting Citiots to patronize those establishments and especially avoid this one like the plague. Horrible overpriced food with the worst of NYC pretentious and rude service and elitism combined, truly the worst of all worlds. read more

We originally visited the Phoenicia Diner back in 2019, at what felt like the height of its hipster stardom. The food and service were amazing, and I've been romanticicizing this place ever since. We finally went back yesterday after many years away and unfortunately, it's definitely gone downhill. It was a relatively uncrowded Tuesday afternoon, and the place was dirty. There was something floating in my water, my husband was given an absolutely filthy beer glass, there were massive carpenter ants and flies on the table. The waitress was a sweetheart but her shirt was absolutely covered in food, to the point where it turned my stomach. The food was just fine. The pancakes were good, but the eggs and biscuits were flavorless. Giving the place 3 stars for the friendly waitstaff and incredible views, but I'm super disappointed after almost a decade of looking forward to coming back here. The corned beef in the corned beef skillet was good quality, but the dish was small and one of the poached eggs was literally hard boiled. The patty melt was bland, under seasoned and small for the price. We had to send back the French toast. Almost all of the pieces were burned, with the burnt sides turned down, with the restaurant trying to hide. They were quick about getting a replacement dish out though. Turned out about 40, but they have a great 'waiting' area where you can get coffee or other drinks or even order food and get it in the covered outside area.
