I got it last minute meaning the day before the epic passes closed and it was less than $500! (I know it was even a bit less if you purchased it ahead of time just FYI). There are three different lodges and one is at the top and two are at the bottom. Had to activate my epic pass and prove my student status. Get there early if you are activating a pass on a weekend! (This is a very manual process and took awhile).

Hikers find a refuge at almost 3,000 feet while skiers and riders enjoy a warmup, food, beer, a rest, and awesome views. Towards the end of ski season, the expansive deck comes to life and the Lodge becomes a huge barbecue place. The large lodge is three stories tall. The basement has a huge footprint but it's not open to the public. Instead, it's used for storage and employee purposes. The main level has a cafeteria, a bar, a large seating area, and a huge hearth with a live fireplace. The third floor is a giant seating room and commands amazing views of the Green Mountains. The entire group of ski areas from Stowe to Killington, Magic, Stratton, Bromley, Mount Snow and Haystack are visible from the top. A giant clock-shaped dial with a rotating arrow guides the curious to all the mountains in view. Although a cafeteria style place, service at the Summit is superb. Friendly, efficient. The Summit also serves as an optimum wedding place as the outside area hosts numerous weddings in the warm months.

It is incredible how many gorgeous, welcoming mansions New England has, yet with a different wonderful experience every time. Hay House does not disappoint. This beautiful classic home looks out to Lake Sunapee, and features a rock garden, fairy tale stone gate where the roses grow, and access to everything from the children's rooms and bathrooms to the well-stocked butler's pantry. The best aspect of being self-guided is the freedom to go at your own pace, and appreciate the many details without having to stare at someone doling out long bios. Plentiful signs give you the ideal highlights of each room as well as relevant history, and you can admire the decor and architectural elements to your heart's content. We happened to be there for Artists' Weekend, where many painters were positioned in various spots on the lush grounds, painting their happy little trees. Live music was played on the porch, and it was a lovely environment for such an event. Landscaping and flowers vary with blooming times of year, and there are some nature trails around the grounds. The walk from the parking lot at the street, to the Hay house, is about 1/4 mile on the dirt/gravel road with a bit of a hill. There was another parking lot at the house itself, which we did not realize until we were hoofing it back. Restrooms on site. Beautiful venue for a wedding, which is something they do. Terrific site all the way around. Paired nicely with the Ice House Museum of antique cars about 10 minutes away, and lunch at Peter Christian's Tavern nearby.

I've gone twice (afternoon cruises) and chosen the upper deck both times. If you or any of your guests have mobility concerns, be aware that there is a small and very narrow set of stairs to the top deck and patrons seem to rush to select their chairs. During boarding and disembarking is when the boat rocks the most, so be careful! Seating is first come first serve, and the seats are hard plastic folding chairs (i.e. no padding, which makes sense in case they get wet), but both times I've gone, the weather and the lake were calm and the ride was very smooth. Chairs are arranged in rows like a theater, so if you go with a date, you can't pair off from the crowd if that's what you are hoping. This is very much a family and friends type of outing. The captain narrates intermittently via speakers in an informative and sometimes humorous way, and it isn't at all obtrusive to conversation. Everyone politely stops talking to listen rather than trying to shout over the interesting details being shared, and now you have a new topic to discuss! People vacationing or living along the lakeshore wave cheerfully from their piers, decks, and yards as the boat cruises by, which adds an element of local charm to the outing. I haven't partaken of their packaged snacks, limited selection of mixed drinks, or beer, but all are available from the deck below. If you do go down the stairs to get something and are alone, you may lose your seat, as people are allowed to change locations throughout the ride, but no one is permitted to stand on the upper deck as a matter of safety (unless of course actively moving from one place to another). You can buy tickets at the boat or online, and there are discounts for AAA members and senior citizens. There is a famed ice cream shack near the boat launch that I haven't yet tried but reviews here on Yelp! are stellar.

The Sunset Hill Trail in Newbury NH is aptly named after this wonderful trail that has an almost…read moreunobstructed view of the West, Lake Sunapee and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Sunset here is a moment of glory. The trail is an easy to moderate 2.4-mile out and back with only a 500-foot ascent. The trail has a steady climb so once you start past the gate, it continues almost at the same grade - considering this used to be a stage coach route to an 1800s farm. Once on top, there are magnificent views. On a dry day in the beginning of September, we didn't see a bug nor a mosquito.... The trail is part of the John Hay Estate, the property of one of America's most consequential Secretaries of State. Hay was the director of our foreign policy in the Spanish American War under President McKinley, the manager of President Teddy Roosevelt's Open Door Policy with China, and led the diplomatic efforts to building the Panama. Canal. The Hay Estate has many acres and besides the trail, visitors can see The Fells, the home of the late State Secretary. A piece of history, a wonderful hike and a great visit.

It provides a great respite from the maddening pace of the three cafeterias at the resort, which can become stuffed with people and getting a seat is like winning Power Ball. After the Pandemic, Mount Sunapee instituted a Maître d' concept instead of a sit-yourself service. That has worked quite well and avoids rude people hijacking tables the entire day for a few people as it occurs in the rest of the resort. Service is quick and the food is more varied and way better than the cafeterias. As well, the enormous bar lends a fun ambiance to the place with lively conversations throughout the day. Goosefeathers also has a gigantic outdoor area with full view of the slopes. Only drawback to the place is the schedule. It closes too early, usually at the end of the ski day. No genuine Après Ski to be had. If you want to do that, the Shanty is right outside the access road in Newbury.
