What a sad waste of a good piece of steak... that's what I thought of the steak dinner here. I ordered a medium rare steak, got a medium-well to well-done steak. It was extremely tough, over cooked, dry, and salted like crazy. I had about 3 bites of it and decided I would rather not finish the plate. I ate the vegetables that came with it, which were also overly salted, but at least it was edible. I won't talk other people out of going, and if there's some reason why the group is pushing for going there, I'll go along and maybe just get some appetizers or something. But I won't be back. Horrible parking situation, horrible food, and the service wasn't great either... pretty much ignored us as much as possible. ----------------------------------- Explanation of my rating system - 5*: Epitome of something, the best I've had, would LOVE to go back 4*: Great food and happy to go back regularly, but not the best of the category 3*: Food is fine. Worst dining experience I've had in Baltimore. Bad oysters, overcharged for them, and rude service! Look at my other reviews, and you'll see I'm not a crank first before you read on! Why would I ever go back? I tried to order the 10.95 raw blue points on the bar menu. After struggling with the bartender to see if the price is for a dozen, she said it was and I placed the order. i was a bit confused when she brought out two plates of 6 oysters each, but i thought it was no big deal. The oysters themselves were tired, and one was definitely bad. when I pointed this out to the bartender, she said, "well, I don't know anything about that." Customer service gaffe # 1. If you don't know anything about it, you shouldn't be serving it, honey. It's called your J-O-B. And you need to either learn about it or own up and perform a little customer service. When I got the bill that included a $20 tab for the oysters, I inquired about it, and said I thought I was getting a half dozen based on our conversation, what did she say? Customer service gaffe #2: "If I gave you credit for it, I'd have to pay for it myself." Well, if you don't know about the product, and your management won't let you credit your customers when you've made a mistake, what value do you provide to the establishment? OK. I turned to my wife, who unfortunately didn't give me backup on this. What did we do? We dutifully paid, and gave her a decent tip. My biggest regret of the evening. Look, I'm pretty forgiving, and I'm not even TALKING about the rest of the meal, which I'm specifically not going to comment on. But take a look at my other reviews, and you'll see I'm not a crank. What a disappointment....we'd hoped they would rise from the ashes with improvements in food and service, but our hopes were dashed. The re-built building is very nice, warm, and establishes a pleasant atmosphere. If you are looking for just a bar, their bar area is large and has plenty of TVs and noise. Yet the poor service started there- we had to gesture to the bartender who was standing right in front of us to get her attention, though we'd been sitting there for 5 min. And then to pay $12.50 for a watered-down martini is ridiculous. As requested, we were seated in the dining room shortly after that. It, too, has a pleasant atmosphere and is much cleaner than pre-fire. But that's where the positive ends. Our server was charmless and slow. It took 20 min. for an order of nachos, which were burnt on top, had no cheese below the top layer, and the server forgot the side of salsa noted on the menu. Our main dishes- two sandwiches, one of which was all vegies- took 30 min. to come out of the kitchen....with cold french fries on the plate! The server replaced those immediately, thank goodness. Overall, the food was nothing special. Which would be okay in a true tavern, brought to the table in a pleasant and timely manner. But the prices and surroundings suggest something more upscale....and the food's mediocre quality stands in contrast. Adding insult to injury: we ordered only 4 items in the dining room and two of them were overcharged on our bill!! We told the server and she took care of it, explaining that the computer was wrong and needed to be fixed, so our bill reflected an "open food discount" approved by her manager. How many people have they ripped off because their computer isn't in sync with their menu?? Not going back. It's too bad a long-established restaurant in Mt. This place has a lot of hype, and I have yet to figure out why. We live just up the street so, naturally, we've tried it a few times. Unless we have a gift card, we're not going again. The food is very hit-or-miss. Last time we went was Valentines Day. The food was very good this time, but the SERVICE - It was like it was everyone's first day on the job. The place was half empty (not a good sign in the evening, on a day like Valentines Day!) and yet it took unreasonably long to get our food. Thank god they had half price bottles that night because getting tipsy certainly helped... Very sad they closed the Nickel Taphouse. After letting the post-blaze grand reopening dust settle, I met a buddy for happy hour at the Mt. Washington Tavern Part Deux to see if the owners there had made the most of an unfortunate charring of this legendary establishment. I walked in and was immediately impressed by what had been done. The Tavern has kept character yet eliminated inefficiency. Not only have they physically incorporate parts of the original, they have capitalized on what I think the Tavern is all about - a Baltimore bar where you get away from the stresses of the 9-5 (or 8-6), a place where you can order a shot of Jameson with a Natty Boh chaser while the person next to you demands a dirty martini with blue cheese olives, and by the end of the night, you're deep in conversation with each other. Me and my buddy stuck to the downstairs bar. They've opened the place up, drilled the beer taps into the wall, upgraded the TVs, but kept the complimentary food and well priced drinks at happy hour (free raw oysters - don't forget to tip - and all drafts were on special). True to form, within an hour, we were conversing with strangers and having a damn good time. Oh, and they kept that great window at the front of the bar (don't know why, but I love that window). And that's the Tavern in my opinion, a place to have a drink and no more. I had hoped that with the reopening, the food would be better. The Tavern has so much potential, but until they can elevate their dining, it's a place I will tell friends to grab a cocktail before heading elsewhere for dinner. I started with a bowl of the Seafood Gumbo and then went with an order of calamari. Neither impressed me - which was a huge let down. I want the Mt. Washington Tavern to be the no-brainer place that I take my brother or sisters to when they come into town, but the food just lacks. It's not cheap and it's mediocre...a deadly combination. In a nut shell, I love the bar. I dig the vibe, I dig the bartenders who aren't there to kiss ass, I dig the shuffle board, I dig the way the Mt. The Tavern, in its early days, could be a marvel for relaxation and socialization. A great neighborhood haunt that for some, served as a refuge; great and consistent American-themed food with wait staff that was knowledgeable, polite and engaging. Excited about its re-opening, we took our our two children and their two friends last night in search of a relaxing meal around 6:45pm. What we found, was a bipolar animal of frightening proportions. The interior design has a distinct aesthetic that seamlessly fuses New England and Mid-Atlantic coastal styles. The layout of different spaces and use of different design elements including, stone, reclaimed wood and brick makes the environment comfortable, functional and appealing to the senses. The face of the Tavern is warm and inviting and lures you in with its Siren call. However, there is a darker side to the Tavern. A beast that lurks beneath the surface. A monster in our midst. At 7:15pm (we arrived at 6:45, remember), my wife, with one eyebrow raised quietly called my attention to the fact that nobody in the restaurant was eating. We were in the rear room downstairs where there were approximately 25-30 tables/booths and nobody, nobody was eating! At 7:30, our drinks arrived. At 8:15pm, our food hit the table (we gave them a window that would've stretched until 8:20pm before kicking into Plan B = Ryan's Daughter). The food? LOUSY. Our $11 medium-rare (with an emphasis on, rare) burgers were dried out and unspeakably salty (as if they grated the burger on a salt-lick before plating). The chips were cool and limp. The grilled cheese, charred. The Po Boy came out as a BLT, was sloppily dressed and resembled something close to mush after the initial bite. The calamari? Pretty darn good, actually. Not Birotecca's calamari but, hey, we'll take it. Then, to top off the evening, their computer system crashed. The ensuing mayhem pitted serving staff against kitchen staff in a Mount Washington Brother-on-Brother Cage Match. LET"S...GET... READY... TO... RUMBBBLLLEEEE! In the end, after 1 hour and 45 minutes, 1 drink each, 4-5 bites of entrees, total, for our entire table, we gave our waiter a tip in cash (the guy worked his tail off to make sure we were happy. It was his first "kids" table and he rocked it!), and headed out the door. It makes me sorry that such a comfortable and venerable hangout can't give its patrons more CULINARY reasons to stick around. read more

After several attempts, I am now done and won't come back. Gorgeous renovations, no detail spared. It's large and the space is used well. I just wish the food would match. The food is terrible and over priced. We had a few sandwiches, the Austin and the french dip. Both tasted like they had been frozen moments earlier. Bread was not worth the carbs. Bland and overall some of the worst food I have ever had in Baltimore. We have done brunch here as well. It's not as bad, but it's also difficult to mess up eggs. Stay far away! read more

Good, simple bar-type food done right in a classy, laid-back atmosphere. The building itself is full of charm and ambience; obviously over 100 years old, filled with dark wood, comfy booths, lots of charm; there is a large back room with a retro-tropical theme- it's very interesting, with lots of glass and a soaring ceiling. The food is top-notch- excellent, charcoaly-tasting hand-formed burgers, tasty, crispy fries; fresh, sweet shrimp, lump crab; not a bad item on the menu. Bar is always busy; service has been a bit slow, but overall friendly- If you could seperate out stars, I'd give them a 2.5 on service, 4 on food, 5 on atmosphere- overall 4 stars!! I have given Mt. Washington Tavern three visits or so in the last six months and it just ain't the same as it used to be. The food used to be much better and the older tavern feel has been replaced with a more modern, sleek appearance. The service here was fine but the quality of the food was not. I also think the prices are fairly high. The only reason I'd go back is because it's the only bar in my parents' Baltimore neighborhood. And it's a good bar. 10 stars for your next EVENT. We held our wedding at the Mt Washington Tavern for a untraditional but SUPER FUN time. We rented the entire upstairs of the restaurant and hosted our ceremony, cocktail hour, and strolling reception. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. Mary was phenomenal to work with, always available to answer my questions and worked with our budget. We used Holly for our flowers and WOW absolutely beautiful. WE used the on site pastry chef for our desserts and our guests absolutely loved them. Everyone here worked with us and helped the night go seamlessly. Our guests said it was the most fun wedding they have ever been to. For us, the ability to have good food, and outside space (lovely sky bar), and an open bar that included the WORKS (beyond your usually vodka cran or light beer you get stuck with at traditional weddings) were all very important factors and MWT delivered. We had ample space for a dance floor and Mary and her team handled the set up of all or our decor so it was totally hands off. No need to worry about renting tables and plates and table clothes like you often need to at other venues. Restaurant weddings are underrated but I promise you will not be disappointed if you host your next event here. read more

I had been to the tavern before the fire and liked the neighborhood bar feel. The old sprawling layout was strange, but added character. The new place is nice, no doubt, but it completely lacks the old neighborhood bar feel. On to the food. I ordered a cheeseburger, medium. It came back thoroughly blackened on both sides, as if they realized that they burned the crap out of it but wanted to keep things symmetrical. The inside was still somewhat juicy somehow, and I was very hungry and had already waited a good 25 minutes for the thing, otherwise I would have sent it back. Worst burger I've had in awhile. Girlfriend ordered grilled cheese with tomato soup which looked and tasted like pasta sauce. Not bad though. Drink selection is pretty good. Lot's of micros. I ordered an Ozzy. It would have been nice if the server had clued me in on the fact that I was ordering a 26 oz. bottle that cost $15.50 and I would have ordered a normal beer, but what are you going to do? Overall, decent place to get drinks. Get your food someplace else. read more

I'm lucky to live so close to the tavern! The food is very consistent and the sandwiches/burgers are absolutely the best thing on the menu. I have to say that I wouldn't suggest doing take out. Pretty hit or miss. But the atmosphere in the restaurant is casual and great for relaxing after work so there is no need to stay in! The beer menu is great. Always something for everyone, including our gluten free friends. But avoid the mixed drinks. Not worth the price. The roof top bar and seating has to be one of my favorite treats. The giant big screen always has the game on and the crowd is a little more rowdy but respectful. Warning, there is the occasional smoker hanging out by the banister. Went here for work Christmas luncheon off the recommendation of a co-worker who had dined here before the rebuild. We all ordered different items. Let's start with the appetizer: JUMBO LUMP CRAB WONTONS Filled with Cream Cheese, Scallions and Jumbo Lump, Thai Dipping Sauce. Served nice and hot (temperature) and they were delicious. I'm not a fan of "cheese" but didn't taste the cream cheese at all. It's was four of us and so three ordered the CHESAPEAKE SALAD Crisp Romaine Hearts topped with Jumbo Lump Crab, Gulf Shrimp, Chopped Apple Wood Bacon and Crumbled Bleu Cheese. Two said the salad was "ok", "nothing special", "something they could make at home", and "bland". They also ordered the Maryland Crab soup and said it was good. Now you're probably wondering what I ordered--thought I would save the best for last...lol. I ordered the TENDERLOIN SANDWICH Char-Grilled 6 oz, Filet Mignon, Topped with Caramelized Onions and Swiss Cheese on a Grilled Roll with Lettuce, Tomato and House-cut Fries. Where do I begin? The chef literally "charred" the Filet. It taste like burnt wood, along with the blacked hamburger roll it was served on. I didn't even eat it. Took like two bites and couldn't do it. The fries were okay but reminded me of eating highly seasoned, deep fried Potato Sticks in the can. Best thing was the sweet ice tea and the Crab Wontons. I am a long time Tavern fan. I started going in 2006, which is nothing compared to the majority of the patrons, some who can recite the history of the community, and the character of this institution before it was the Tavern. The fire in 2011 and the subsequent reemergence have created a different space, but one that is looking to redefine itself, while staying true to the roots that so many of us love. There are now 10 taps will a well-selected variety of craft beers, and a good deal more accessible space. The skybar and new patio have the potential to be a great space on pleasant evenings and a larger kitchen and emerging menu may come to define the new Tavern. So. Well. Ummm, ok. Heard about this place when I worked at Mt Washington pediatric hospital as a "must go". So I went. And I don't do reviews typically on one visit. I go two to three times before I do a review. Consistently the wait was too long. We were seated in poor areas and the bartenders acted like we were an inconvenient. Poor eye contact. Disappointed. I expected a lot because of the great location and modern decor. They've done a great job making this place welcoming, open, great place to hang out. Food was severely disappointing though. We started off with the grilled oysters casino. Tiny oysters that has a strips of bacon on top 2x the size of the oyster. It was just like we got bacon with a tiny side of grilled oyster. The flavors didn't mesh.. it was off balance. The menu said 4 per order, but it came with six.. I guess to make up for the lack of oyster? WHo knows.. I would not waste money on those. I thought the redeeming app would be the truffle fries. Again.... under seasoned and flavorless. I ended up dousing mine in ketchup. The cheese was all at the bottom of the bowl. I was REALLY excited about the turkey and fried green tomato club (especially after the waitress said itwas better than the turkey and brie panini.. and that in my head would have been heaven). But again.. under seasoned. THe turkey was piled on.. but it was just lunch meat. The "texas toast" was far too dry, not enough sauce/mayo/aioli. The whole sandwich was bland, and I needed to drink a full glass of water to swallow half of it. The fried green tomato was practically absent.. again very small and there was no seasoning. The house made kettle chips were, however, delicious. I ate all of those. My colleague got the sweet potato fries which just looked shrunken and sad. The salads looked good though.. maybe I should have stayed on the safe side? I wouldn't come backhere. Price/quality for tavern food is mismatched here. read more

The food here was uniformly disappointing. Our server Sean was great. With all the bars and restaurants in Baltimore, I really wouldn't return unless it was at someone else's suggestion or maybe to sit outside on their patio. That said, there's many places with outside seating so their patio area doesn't really go that far either. The food is overpriced for what you get is really what it comes down to for me. If their prices were more reasonable I'd be much more inclined to return because the atmosphere is nice enough, albeit somewhat generic. read more

Went for a happy hour on my most recent visit with a few friends and the bartender seemed to be having a bad day. He wasn't at all friendly and even with some cajoling on our part, he wasn't able to turn that frown upside down. So it didn't add to our dining and drinking experience! I love the new look...they've managed to capture an essence of the old while adding in more light and a great new upstairs area and outside deck. The food isn't all that impressive nor was the service on any of the past 3 times I've been there. It's close to my house and I keep giving it a second, third and hopefully fourth chance. They must have changed chefs and owners. Its completely different than what I remember. My family has had several functions here like baby showers, engagement dinners..etc. This place is huge and they have many different rooms. The food was always good no matter what we ordered and the staff was great but keep in mind this was over 4-7 years ago. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago...we came during happy hour times however our waiter failed to show us the HH menu. So we had to ask for it after a while. They were having drink and food specials and clearly we did not want to miss out. We also noticed they had raw oysters at the front of the restaurant so we asked our waitress about it. She proceeds to give us tickets to get free ones. But again. ..we had to ask. She wasn't very forthcoming with any info. We tried the crab wontons which were bland...not good at all. The Maryland crab soup was delicious!! Seasoned well, flavorful and lots of crab meat. Our waitress never really came back to check on us yo see if we wanted to order a meal. After 20-30 minutes we were able to flag her down. I wanted a burger so bad..lol..I went ahead and ordered one and to my surprise.. it was NOT good. How do you mess that up? Came here on a weekday during happy hour to catch up with some friends. Happy hour is M-F from 4-7, $3.30 drafts and $4 select wines Parking is horrendous, hopefully you'll find street parking somewhere The interior is actually quite nice and you have the option of either sitting in the dining room on one side or the bar in the other. Food was pretty average, I ordered the cheesesteak and while it wasn't bad it wasn't anything to write home about. Overall my rating is more to do with the food itself. Not sure what happened to this place. New management? Was with a large group, luckily my table had the good waiter. That's what the two stars are for. I came in late and still got my food and drinks before the other table that was with us, even got their water. Food served at that table was either not put in to the kitchen, or came out ice cold. The waiter didn't even offer drinks or coffee or anything to compensate. And a child didn't even get their food until after the party was almost done, other children came in very late and still got their food before she did. and it was her celebration!! The bartender never gave me salt and pepper and when I told him that it was overcooked for the second time he gave me an atitude and made me feal unwhanted. This is one of my fiance and my favorite spots in Baltimore. The food is fresh, with decent portions, and they have a great selection of beers, fresh grapefruit and orange crushes, and a nice selection of wines. We typically sit at Jim's bar (if we're there on a Wednesday through Saturday day) and he's the best! He remembers what we like and takes great care of the whole bar. I've gone with my father and sat upstairs which has an airy feel as the patio is open and great for a spring or summer evening. They have private space for functions and parties which I would look into for the future. The owner Rob is great and so is his wife who has been bartending when we've stopped in before. I've always been keen on people, not places and it's nice to call this one of our fave haunts. We certainly would go here before other places strictly for the service and ambiance. If their lot is full they offer valet. I always look forward to their raw bar selection and daily specials. read more

I have avoided this place for its consistency based on its reviews, in other words it has been less than stellar. I did come here a couple of times prior to the fire, so right off you will notice the place is nice. Two stars for that. Service was fine, bartender was attentive. I ordered a quesadilla, it was ok. The food that came out really didnt look that appetizing, so i will venture to say it may just be okay, a friend who invited me there said their burger was unmemorable. Long time patron. Really a nice re-do after the fire; beautiful new and clean design. The same, very average bar food printed on new menus. 6 oz. water glasses + slow service= me thirsty customer. Menu pricing is up, up, up and a poor value. A moderately busy night but extremely noisy - is it the combination of wood floors, wood ceilings and stone walls or maybe just me? Not sure but it was kinda annoying. MWT is a decent place for happy hour and not much more. I'll wait for the patina to come back (if ever). I'm new to the Baltimore area and have been searching for "my place" for happy hour and other merriment. I've sort of found it at Mount Washington. Here's the thing though, there are two things to consider: 1) Is this a place you want to hang out in because of the environment/atmosphere? 2) Is this a place you'll get good food and drinks? For #1, I think it's got a great atmosphere and I totally feel comfortable being there, alone or with friends. The place is so big that it doesn't really get crowded in the traditional sense but like most places, the bar seats are the first ones to go. But on off nights, it's nice. I really like that people aren't on top of each other and the diversity of the crowd. In a city like Baltimore, if places to relax and mingle don't have a mix of white, black, brown and yellow faces, I raise an eyebrow to that. Also it's not a meat market but it's a yuppies-with-kids place either. The bar in the back has a marble top and a fireplace. It looks like something out of Restoration Hardware. So this gets a yes. For #2, I have had quesadillas there twice, the first time they were really good, the second time, not so much. I had a burger that was lacking in flavor and twice now I've had the lump crab wontons that were pretty tasty, mostly because of the dipping sauce. Like others have said though, for the prices, the food should be better and be more consistent. Overall, I'd hang out there again (it's becoming a favorite place), grab a drink with friends, whatever, but if you're looking for a satisfying culinary experience, I don't think you'll get that there. read more

Very loud, staff are below average in service skills - which is a big no on a busy day in a restaurant this largFood is okay, so I would continue to meet a friend who wants to go here for weekday lunch. But for dinners and weekends I won't be back, but instead persuade my out of city friends to go elsewhere from now on. update 09/19. still a beautiful place that deserves to have much better food served in it. This time I tried the crabcake sandwich. Taste was terrible and it was dust-dry. Definitely not lump meat as it says on the menu. The bun was so stale that I had to remove the crab. Fries were also dry and inedible. Server was very pleasant- a huge change - but I think she had too many tables to cover (?) because she didn't check back in on us. Overpriced for quality. read more

I don't know the names of the hostesses that were working last night (2/9/2019), but my suggestion is to fire both of them. My wife was cursed at (unbeknownst to her, noticed by me) by the hostess that seated us last night. I asked "I'm sorry, what was that?" to which I received a reply: "oh nothing, I was talking to the other hostess." We are in the service industry ourselves, and there is absolutely no situation in which that is acceptable behavior. Mind you, when our table was ready, the hostess merely pointed at our table and said nothing else. We were not given menus, nor was the table clean. We were provided a text notification when we thought our table was ready. When my wife went up to see which table it was, the hostess replied "oh your tables not up yet, you shouldn't have received a message." All the while, she was rude and standoffish. Its a shame to see that others who have posted about this restaurant have experienced racism here. I was one of two non-white people in that restaurant last night -- something that a non-white person would notice pretty quickly, anywhere. Needless to say, so did everyone else apparently. The air was palpably different at my table for some reason. I noticed we weren't serviced as frequently as other tables throughout the night. Great food - fried green tomatoes were delicious. Unfortunately, our experience was soured from the very beginning of the night. Consumers paying for what they believe is quality service should receive just that. Nobody willingly asks for mediocre service, in any industry. Based on other reviews of this venue, it seems like there needs to be a few staffing changes. Definitely the waiting and seating staff, but perhaps the managerial staff as well if this has been going on for some time. My wife's father used to come here every week when he trained in Baltimore back in the 70's. So we were excited to try it out. We won't be coming back here ever again, which is a damn shame. read more

We came here for brunch and were pretty disappointed. It took about 20-30 minutes to get our drinks. Our food was brought to us after a solid wait and several items were missing. The atmosphere is awesome and the place has potential, they just need to have more staff for a time where they should expect it to be busy. read more

I was not expecting to be so impressed with the Mt. Washington Tavern, but every part of the experience surpassed my expectations. The atmosphere was lovely, the food and drinks were excellent and the service was attentive and friendly. I would absolutely visit again if I'm in the area. read more

Cuban sandwhich cold and the roll it was on burnt and hard. Fish Taco's fish was somewhat warm but the tortia was ice cold like it was right out of the fridge. The Po' Boy was acceptable but not really good. Onion rings were burnt greasy limp and cold we sent them back but never recvd a good batch. The waitress just took them off bill. Here is the kicker to me which makes me sad because I use to frequent there quite a bit ; we asked to see the manager was told sure in a non discript way. Never got to see him after 30 min the bill came we paid we left. no one seems to care if you want food manager definitely didn't care never showed at our table If you want to just drink this is the place for you read more

Its okay. I've been here 5 or 6 times since it was rebuilt and it feels like a Republican's take on Woodberry Kitchen. Except, without a chef. The beer is good, and I love having this place as an option (if other options are booked). But the hosts, bartenders and servers are kind of snobby & formal. The menu is uninspired and pricey. Places like this make me wonder if the owners have ever traveled to another city. At least its consistent. Oh - and I love the shuffle board! They should convert the entire front-half of the place into a shuffleboard hall. read more
