This place is pretty good. I've been here a few times. The food is decent, the drinks are good and the decor is interesting. Their are mannequins in the for decor which I thought was cool. The inside of the bar area looks like it use to be a car shop. Cool place. The only down side is parking in the area is hard to find as it's on the Main Street. I would suggest Uber or carpool to save the headache of finding a park. Or maybe visit during the week when the crowd is smaller. read more

The cornbread and chicken was not my kind of food, but was still good. Even the desserts were good (the upside down pineapple cake). The good sounding pork cutlet special was not available, which was okay since it happens. But, was offered a pint of beer to make up for it, which never came. Didn't follow through even though not necessary so lost half a star. Lost another half star for projecting the "Kill Bill" DVD's menu the entire time and never playing the movie, hah. Mua, you're unexpectedly cool. This former garage has become a part bar/restaurant/art space. It's a cavernous expanse of 6,500 square footage to play with. You can feel the energy of party goers pre-gaming on a Saturday night, some couples on a date night and small groups of friends laughing loudly, adding to the decibel breaking noise of the place. This is not one of those "let's have a quiet dinner and hold hands" type of ambiance. You should definitely sit at the bar for a very stiff Basil Gimlet ($9 during HH!) or a Rosemary gimlet while you wait for your friends to arrive. Or choose something out of the extensive wine/beer list. Meanwhile, you are wondering (staring really) at the bronze bust with a mannequin leg sticking out of it. There's a lot of kitsch and artsy stuff going on all around you and that adds to the appeal of the place. The menu arrives and its a BIG menu. You'll be confused at the choices offered and you'll wonder if all of them will be executed nicely. I can't answer that, but I do know that the crispy polenta in tomato sauce, bone marrow and the 24 hour pork spare ribs were amazing. You should also know that Mua's burgers are quite popular. Nothing special, no special bun or toppings, just pure American 1/2 lb. beef, cooked medium (as requested), tomato, lettuce, onions, aioli. Lots of perfect, perfect skinny fries. Does not compete with my best burger (NOPA!) ever, but it's pretty darn delicious. I'm docking a star for service. Yet, about 1/4-1/3 of the hipsters from SF migrated over here in the hopes that it eventually becomes the new Brooklyn. Went to MUA the other Saturday night on a triple date per Janice C's choice. I was born and raised in the Bay, I'll be prideful when the Dubs are doing well, but I'm not on the bandwagon. However, though, gotta point out how Steph Curry comes here! The warehouse space is a lot bigger than it appears from the outside. The layout is odd, where you have to walk through the bar first and then hit the hostess stand. Small bar area, but friendly bartenders. It's loud and crowded, it was hot that day, but it was pretty warm in there as well (no AC). Parking was a pain in the ass, luckily we finally were able to swoop up on parking after about 15-20 minutes of circling around. Apps were ordered - ribs, polenta, and bone marrow. I only tried the marrow. 5 of us got their much talked about, burger, and one got the fried chicken. They gave three bones for the marrow. I like it when it's the long bones cut in half; these were the short ones stuffed with a lot of garlic and parsley. It was hard to scoop out and not one of the more notable ones I've had. The burgers were huge and included fries. But it should at a base price of $16, and of course cheese was an additional cost. We both asked for medium. His was more medium well, and I thought mine was as well, until I cut it in half and ate the second half, which had some pink as opposed to the other half which had none. Fries were plentiful but overly salty and shrimpy as they were short and skinny. They weren't totally crispy either. The burger was topped with aioli, tomato, onion and lettuce. Aioli was a nice touch and it was a messy big burger. Service could have been attentive, and apparently when all the ladies went to the bathroom; the hostess said that they had reservations for the table and asked if we would be leaving soon. How rude! We were waiting for our orders to be placed for awhile. Since we are were a group of 6, they added the automatic gratuity and it was 20% not 18%. A plus of this place is though they let you split checks easily. They have a bill split form that they give you with the bill where you write the last four digits of the card and the amount you wish to charge on it. Helpful indeed! 3 stars for a decent burger but inconsistent meat temp, cute urban warehouse hipster decor, but pricey for what it is too. No one can replace our beloved #1, the NOPA burger, which is actually a little cheaper and way better than MUA's. I jumped into my Whip and rolled to Mua for a Cocktail and a late dinner. I parked my whip a block away and street hiked to Mua . Mua is deceiving on the outside it looks small ,once inside its Huge . It was a Warehouse at one time . Its been converted to a Bar , Restaurant and Club. I was greeted and seated . My Server dropped off a bottle of Chilled Water and a Menu. I perused the menu and when my Server returned I ordered a Craft Cocktail - Strawberry Lemonade, Calamari and Chile and Mussels In Tomato Broth with Fries in Aioli. 5 Minutes later I had my Strawberry Lemonade . Its a very tasty Cocktail a Creeper one at that. Minutes later my Calamari came with an Aioli dipping sauce . Very Yummy and a good size portion . My Mussel dish came 10 minutes after I finished my Calamari. The Fries and Aioli was very Tasty. It paired very with the Mussels and Tomato Broth. Quite a Delish Dinner. My Server dropped off a Dessert Menu. I Perused it and ordered the Pecan Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce, A few minutes later I had my Tart it was Heavenly and very Decadent . Made a reservation on a Tuesday night through Yelp which was the first plus. Walked right in and they sat us right down. After reading reviews on Yelp I wasn't surprised that it was going to be busy on a weekday and it was in fact pretty busy. Second plus was the atmosphere and decor. Walking in you can already tell the place was quite modern, I mean they had their own dj playing all of my favorite songs! I appreciated the sophisticated vibes the restaurant gave especially since it is housed in a barn-like structure. From the cool artwork on the walls to the chic table setting, I was thoroughly pleased by the inside set-up of Mua. Third plus was the yummy food. I spent the entire day (guilty pleasure of mine) checking out the menu and pics for what looked good. I wasn't sure how I was going to pick which selections to get, but I had my mind set on the clams for sure. We started with the no cheese mac n cheese which I thought was tasty, however it wasn't my favorite of the night. We paired that with the lamb which was so tender and had such delectable sauce layered on it. I love lamb and this dish was enough to make me love it even more. To top it all of, the clam dish was absolutely divine. I'm not sure who thought of pairing clams with fries but bless your soul. I loved every piece of this dish and was completely stuffed after finishing it. All three of these dishes were good to share for two. For the most part, people tend to think everything is better from where they are from. They will brag about all the good things they feel is superior in their neck of the woods. I'm guilty of this when it comes to food. I tend to think restaurants and food are better on my side of the Bay in San Francisco than in Oakland. Came here on Saturday prior to going to a concert at Paramount theater. Right away I liked the clean, open, loft style building with the well placed dining areas both upstairs and downstairs. After being seated upstairs in a private area I took a look at the menu. I really like the variety of entrees/appetizers on the menu which is good for groups where people have very different tastes, everyone will be able to find something to their liking. Here's what we settled on: Braised Lamb Cheeks: this is four small morsels of lamb cheek. It's beyond tender and a great appetizer. Soft-Shelled Crab Po'Boy: I thought it was tasty and good for those with smaller appetites. My wife will disagree however because when she sees the word "crab", to her that means Dungeness. And if you bite into this sandwich thinking Dungeness, you'll be very disappointed. Hamburger: this is a half pound patty served with shoe-string styled fries. Options available for a dollar or two more is white cheddar cheese, bacon, avocado, and grilled onions. I settled on my burger with cheese and bacon. For big eaters or those who enjoy a good burger, Mua makes a very good burger cooked to order. Fried Chicken: this was actually ordered by my friend. I didn't get to try it but she said it was good. And from what I saw it looked to be fried perfect. I was a little jealous. Along with the great ambiance and food, the service was awesome. Friendly and attentive. Drinks and food came out quickly. They have outside seating, second floor, and happy hour area. If you come here for happy hour, don't expect waiters to come take your order. Instead, you order both your food and drinks up the bar. DRINKS: Im not a fan of their basil drink; basil is too strong. Other than that, i love the rest of the cocktail drinks. Oh, they also serve wine here, fir sll you wine lovers. It tasted like pineapple juice but after an hour or so, I felt it's kick. I was going to order another one but I didn't want to get a hang over the next day. There's always a next time... - Brussels Sprouts = this was ok... not as good as we've been having lately but it was edible... it wasn't as sweet so that's probably why I wasn't a fan. It just lacked any taste. - Mac and Cheese = tasted the same as the first time I had it... so that's a good thing. - The Hamburger = major disappointment! Eww. It was bland... and bland... and bland! No matter what condiments we added... salt, pepper, whatever we could possibly get our hands with, it still tasted bland. Never again! - Pineapple Upside-down Cake = probably the highlight of my night! Cocktail wise I haven't found anything I've loved on their menu, so I usually just order a manhattan or old fashioned but they are well made. They also have a solid beer list. I do like this as a dinner place with a drink or two more than a place to have multiple drinks and hang out at (I think there's better places in the neighborhood for that). The no cheese mac and cheese is amazing and I highly recommend. I also like the mussels w/ fries, and the brussells sprouts. I've had bites of other things too and most have been good. They have a really interesting sounding veggie burger made of chickpeas, bulger,quinoa, and walnuts that I want to try but haven't gotten around to. They take reservations which I like and given how "trendy" it is, I'd imagine there would be quite a wait otherwise. It's definitely not my favorite restaurant or bar, but for the combination of variety of food and cocktails plus a fun vibe, it's a nice spot. Such a cute place to come with some friends. Love how their is a dj here that really sets the mood at this place. Call ahead and try and get a reservation there is usually a wait on the weekends. The drinks are good and strong and the bartenders always seem to make me happy with the drink concoctions. As far as food the calamari is a good appetizer to split. I dried the soft shell sandwich and wish it was crab pieces instead of the whole crab. The burger is a really good choice to try! My friend always ordered the catfish sandwich which was delicious!! This was over a year ago, but it was before I started yelping so I wanted to share this experience. A friend was having a going-away-party at Mua during Happy Hour. We had a table of 14, there were some other tables and people in the place. We had food and drinks, music was playing. About an hour while we were hanging out, one of the other servers came up to us and told us to quiet down because another table complained. It was a table of four women in their late 40's. It was happy hour! Yes, we clapped and cheered for our friend, but I'm very certain that we were not unreasonably loud.... nothing more than when someone blows out a birthday cake at a restaurant. Some of my friends were mad about it and wanted to leave, but we all decided to stay. Later on when we spoke to our server, he apologized and said the other server shouldn't have done that. All I'm saying is that folks want to go somewhere quiet, go to high tea somewhere and not a restaurant/bar during Happy Hour. And I'm pretty certain we racked up a much bigger tab than those four ladies did. Maybe I shouldn't blame the ownership/management for this but I think it's an important part of customer service. Many in my original group have decided not to go back to Mua because of that. I have only once just because a friend did a birthday celebration there. MUA is one of my favorite places to go on a special occasion! It is a bit pricey, but it truly is worth it. AMBIANCE: The restaurant is basically a warehouse restored into an upscale, hipster joint. There is very unique art all around, string lights, and hip music blasting. It definitely is a fun place to be at night. DRINKS: Their cocktails are super strong and tasty! There is bar seating and a few tables in the waiting area for you to grab a drink and chill at while waiting. SERVICE: You can expect to get great service here. The servers are always super friendly, laid back and extremely attentive. I have yet to experience bad service here! FOOD: The food is here freaking awesome! Honestly anything on the menu is a safe bet... I have yet to order a dish I don't enjoy. Favorites: - Bone Marrow: The bone marrow here is so delicious! You actually get a good amount too, unlike a lot of places that barely have anything inside the bones. It comes with 3 pieces, crostinis, and pickles. I can never get enough! -Mussels: The mussels are so chewy and delicious. They come in such a flavorful, creamy tomato broth. The fries are a perfect accompaniment for this dish. I get this almost EVERY time I come. It also gets me very full! It's an amazing dish. -Ribeye with fries: This is a huge portion. Definitely shareable. Very cool hip artsy new spot in downtown Oakland. If you blink you might miss it. It appears to be right smack in between 2 dealerships. I love the high ceiling lofty look. The place was packed on a saturday night when we went to celebrate a friend's bday. It has a nice bar and an upstairs dining area also. The bartenders were a bit snooty i thought. We had a drink while waiting for our party to arrive, and mind you it wasn't crazy packed at the bar, and there were 3 bartenders, who passed us a few times without even asking if we've been helped. Our cocktails were pretty strong though, which was good. The food i would say was just mediocre. I expected a lot more. We ordered a few small plates to share: the mac & cheese (it sounded more appealing than what came out as it was suppose to include butternut squash, yet it was truly a dissapointment. very bland and watery); grilled prawns had a burnt taste to them; and the ahi tuna sashimi (which was the best dish of the night, but nothing comparable to anything you get a good sushi spot). A few of us got the fried chicken, which comes with coleslaw and cornbread, which was suppose to be really good. Good not great. No complaints about the customer service, orders were correct, and everything came out fast and fresh. But while most things were good, there was nothing that stood out as great, with the potential exception of the Bread Pudding. Also ordered the Pineapple Upside Down cake (good) and Almond cake (mediocre but interesting spices), and for dinner got the shittake crostini (really good) bone marrow (good) no cheese mac n cheese (surprisingly good) grilled romaine (better than ok) brussell sprouts (unspectacular but good) crispy polenta (disappointing, nice spicy tomato sauce but the polenta was like a brick) and chicken wings (good). Better known for their late-night dining scene (http://www.thedailymeal.com/look-10-hot-late-night-restaurants), but they've been doing lunch for about a month and a half. The menu has some of the favorites from the dinner menu (Mac & "Cheese" (butternut squash), brussel sprouts, burger, etc) along with a few extra sandwiches like green bean, roast beef, and chicken. I went with the 1/2lb cheeseburger ($11, +$1 for most cheese, avocado, grilled onions, +$2 for gorgonzola or bacon, +$3 for fried egg) with a side salad (can choose that or fries). This place is still a happening place and busy with people! We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and we were seated when most of our party was here. It was our friend's birthday and so we decided to share food and ordered a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Our waiter was very attentive and even helped us to take photos. We ordered fried calamari (delish), guacamole and chips, brussel sprouts (yummy), mac and cheese, fries and mussels (tasty), shrimp (good), watermelon, kale, crispy tofu, crab cakes, bread pudding and creme brulee. I tried the Crabbie's alcoholic ginger beer and that hit the spot. Fun and hipster type place, a bit loud but we still were able to talk if we sat close to one another. There were about 10 of us and it was great to catch up with one another. I haven't been here in about 3 years and didn't realize that the bathrooms were unisex. read more

From the ambiance to the food and drinks this place is awesome. The location is very unique, it is nestle on a curbed street between a car dealership. I went during the week around 6:15. Happy hour ended around 6:30 but the bartender was very accommodating. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly. The staff here are working hard. I couldn't even lay a napkin down without a staff swapping it out for a new one (I was sitting at the bar). I recognized the owner walking around and once I saw how posh/hip/classy she was, everything about this place made sense. I had the torrontes sparkling champagne with the fried calamari and chicken wings. The calamari was very tender and perfectly cooked and seasoned with some fried jalapeños which provided the perfect balance of heat and subtle sweetness. The chicken wings were very flavorful with the commercial sweet chili sauce. They added some cilantro and sesame seeds to take it up a notch. Overall I will surely be back. This place is perfect for groups , date nights and lovers of art. Also an added bonus: they have happy hour everyday. read more
