Mua added a 20% mandatory tip to everyone's bill even if it is 1-2 people. They did not start out that way as I have been going for years. I do not agree with them adding the 20% tip.. the service from waiters are not that great and in fact there is a waiter that is just plain awful !! So I try not to sit in her section.... If Mua is making itself to be a top notch restaurant then they need to get their waiting staff up to par with that level. ( I usually tip 15 and add more if service was very good.) DRINKS - Has anyone notices the shrinking size cups over time? Some of their cocktails now are almost like a shot glass but the prices the same. I will be visiting Mua less now that they made these changes. They made the change a while back but I am just now getting to the reviews. read more

Hipster style. Two very small full bars, one downstairs and the other is upstairs. The building is awkwardly designed (it used to be a car dealership) so even though it looks big, it's not spacious while walking around as you have to frolic through the dining tables to get to your seat. There's a live dj playing music most nights. The food options are expensive considering the amount they give you but it's always tasty. Drinks are good. I've came for a date, with friends and family. All times I had a blast. If you're use to traditional foods, this place may be a miss for you. My grandmother wasn't as experimental with her food as my sister and I are. So she won't be returning. I however turned my sister on to a new place that she now visits without me. LOL. read more

I really, really like Mua for what it is. And for what it is, I don't think you can find better. What is it? - Crowded, hip and loud. So you have to be in that mood. I don't think I'd recommend for an intimate date night on a weekend. - Incredibly tasty small plates to share, that are larger than your average small plates. - Fan favorites: bone marrow, "mac 'n cheese", mussels, peppers - Large plates that are pretty friggin' large. The chicken milanese was fantastic. A huge portion of chicken pounded flat and perfectly fried with a heaping mound of arugula on top. - Extremely strong cocktails that pack a boozy punch. - Great service, even though this spot is packed on a weekend night. Pro-tip: Make a reservation via Yelp. Go with a group, gussy it up and get after it. read more

Yum! I have no complaints. I came here with my bff last night and we had reservations so we were seated immediately. I had a great time..food (we had about 5 different items) was delicious and the plates were served in a timely fashion. The drinks were stiff and well balanced, service was on point. Business dinner. What a great choice. One of my coworkers is a vegan. MUA has some great choices for vegans, vegetarians and meat lovers. I highly recommend a cocktail to start. I had the ginger julep & my coworkers had a peach vodka, 18 year old bourbon & a bottle of Roth. Every app we ordered was outstanding: fresh guacamole & homemade tortilla chips, fried calamari, ahi sashimi, crab cakes, & bone marrow (Sorry no pics). We were so hungry. I had the mussels w/ aoli fries. It was so delicious. It would have been better w/ some pasta or crusty bread to soak up that amazing sauce. My coworkers had the vegetable ragout & five 16 oz ribeye w/ fries. I heard the ribeye was perfectly seasoned and did not need any steak sauce. We had the creme brûlée, pecan tart a la mode & cappuccinos. For a Thursday night this place was packed. We sat upstairs by the DJ. Surprisingly it wasn't loud. The dining room downstairs was bustling. You can see the kitchen & bar on your way in and out. The bathrooms are inviting. There is seating in the front courtyard. Can't wait to come back. I came here a few weeks ago with a group of some of my coworkers and we opted in for the family style option (I guess they offer this to large reservations??) I can't remember the names of all of the dishes we had, but everything was delicious!! I loved the no cheese Mac and cheese, the vegetable ragout and the salmon!! The servers were also all really nice and attentive despite our big group. And on top of that, the space is cool and the drinks were strong, so I can't complain! Overpriced. Loud as hell. Mediocre food. Inflexible policies. Go elsewhere. The good: - Fried chicken was great - Lamb cheek was good, but small and overpriced. The bad: - Half the mussels were gross - Pate and mushroom dishes were bland and overpriced, bread sucked - Horribly loud, impossible to have a conversation - Automatic 20% gratuity on parties over 5, no splitting checks Cocktails, Catfish, Shrimp and Brussel sprouts were OK. My experience here was amazing! They recently reopened after closing for Covid, but they adapted to having a takeout only menu. We ordered for pick up and the food was fresh, and got the Steak sandwich and Soft shell Crab Po Boy. They were both delicious and made from high quality ingredients with large portions. We also ordered Butternut Squash Mac n Cheese, which was so creamy we were surprised that it didn't contain cheese. Definitely will be stopping by again! read more

Came here for a friends going away party. The service was slow. The drinks were "okay" but I always sent my Martini back until i finished it. I was over the drinks here instantly. The place is LOUD! I could feel the hip energy and music bumping through my bones. I am mixed on if i will return here. The food ended up being decent. Salad was solid. Meat was tender and juicy. I came to Mua to celebrate my birthday with my boyfriend. I made a reservation for 7:15. We were seated right away and got our water right away as well. However we then were never greeted by a waiter. We decided to wait 30 minutes. So we waited 30 minutes and STILL nothing. We decided to let the hostess know that no one had taken our order. After that, a waiter had finally come to take our order. It kind of bothered me that he didn't apologize or acknowledge the fact that we had been waiting their for awhile. Thankfully, the food and drinks did not disappoint. We ordered the lamb cheeks, fried calamari, Brussels sprouts, and several drinks. Checked out this spot last night with 3 great friends. Had a blast!!!!! The atmosphere, music, and especially the food was excellent. We met at the bar before being seated. The bar area was fun. There is plenty of space to sit and stand around without feeling crowded. After being seated, I thought we were gonna order everything on the menu(we were really hungry!!!-lol) We started off with the Brussel sprouts, calamari, guacamole and chips and no Mac Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was enough of a meal for me. Damn, it was so good!!! The Brussel sprouts were tender and seasoned perfectly. The calamari was nice and crispy. It was so good!!! (I'm starting to sound like a broken record) We ordered our main entrees: Fried chicken Veggie burger (CBQ) Vegetable ragout Chicken Milanese We shared everything!!!!!! It was so good!!!!! The atmosphere was great. The DJ played music from the 80s and 90s and it wasn't loud where it would drown out your conversation with your friends. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I've been twice, first time they made me stand in a crowd and wait for my friend because they don't seat incomplete parties... we were 2, if my friend didn't show I'd be a table for 1, does that exist? O did have a reservation. I understand larger parties but I think it's a fail not to seat a single woman and make her stand uncomfortably with a crowd of people pushing by every few moments. (Bar was full) Second time, not as crowded. They have a policy to take your card and charge you if you cancel 24hrs prior, I actually wanted to cancel but there was no way to do so without them charging me - no answer on phone all day, no way to do it on line. I booked the night prior... So there's that gem. To me the food is good, it's a similar type of cuisine pervasive in California, so just good as it doesn't really stand out. My server was on point and at this time it wasn't as crowded as last so not club level decibel loud. I think large groups would like this spot as it's lively, fun and you can share plates, but foodies and people who prefer to be treated like people and not wallets, I'd try another of the many great restaurants in Oakland. read more

Although it's super crowded, and it always takes at least 30 minutes to get a table, the food is good. Surprisedly, the fried chicken is pretty good. All of the salads are good, but my favorite is the twice cooked kale salad. The best desert is the pineapple upside down cake, you will not be disappointed. The strawberry shortcake was just okay, it had a biscuit as the cake with too much whip cream, and only a little bit of strawberries with it. read more

Mua is great for groups, a date and/or a fun-vibrant dinner. Often, I just order a bunch of tapas to share with the table and maybe include one entrée to share as well. They usually have a DJ upstairs playing 90s-current hip-hop/R&B and the lighting is on the dim side (which I love). The blackened catfish with dirty rice is one of my favorite entrées! If you haven't tried it, I highly suggest it. Shared plates I've had and really enjoyed are: brussels sprouts, calamari, ahi sashimi, ribs, crab cakes, and prawns. The "no cheese" Mac n cheese is ok, but I would probably skip it unless you're a big Mac n cheese fan. First off love the name! First thing I thought of was MakeUp Artist. But as for the restaurant, as the great Rupaul once said, 'Meh'. Everything is good but not great, but too expensive. We ordered the crab cakes for $18 and you got two tiny crab cakes. And PS, they weren't even good :( we got the calamari which was actually my favorite dish we ordered. It was super buttery and crispy so calamari gets an A for me. Burrata was meh, and tiny but it came with a bunch of fried peppers and a portabello mushroom half in olive oil. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR CAR/BELONGINGS!! My friends and I stopped here on our way home and parked 3-4 cars away from the restaurant's entrance on the front street! Our car was broken into and there was no indication/signage around that this restaurant is in a high crime area. Additionally, the food was just okay, but definitely not worth the headache. PROPER MANAGEMENT would be hiring security and/or setting up a valet system/monitored parking lot. It's unfortunate that this restaurant doesn't do more to protect its customers. read more

I'll confess at the outset that it's a little more of a "scene" than I prefer, but if that's what you're into you may really love it here. It can be pretty loud and is always crowded, but that can contribute to a festive atmosphere. The cocktails are excellent; I've never been disappointed by them. The food is quite good. I've really enjoyed the brussels sprouts, chicken wings, lamb cheeks, and spare ribs. Really the only reasons for four stars instead of five are that the vibe isn't really my style, and I think you could get a little more bang for your buck. read more

Came here on Valentine's Day for a nice dinner. Atmosphere is amazing, artsy and hip inside what used to be a car garage. It's been renovated and the walls have art and lights hanging around. It's beautiful inside and the service was amazing as well. Never once had to ask for water refills and our server was attentive without being invasive. Their beer selection is pretty extensive and they have a good spread for wines too--I had a glass of the German Riesling at the suggestion of one of the servers and it was one of the best whites I've had in a while. We had the bone marrow and chicken pâté appetizer, and the chicken Milanese and mussels for entreés. The chicken pâté was absolutely the highlight, although everything was delicious. It came with a pear and pickled onions, amazing blend of flavors. Never had anything like it. Was pleasantly surprised by everything we had.
