Time to update my review to the present day. So I now go to mud bay much more frequently than before. Why? They have improved their selection of cat food and snacks (which was the biggest problem I had with them before), and now they offer considerably more friendly and helpful service than the competitors (Petsmart, Petco, and even Healthy pet). To be clear: their service always was good!, But their competitors have gotten a lot worse imo). One example of how their service is better: During the pandemic I was having trouble getting some of my cats their preferred food. I went to Mud Bay and found about half of the things I was looking for. The friendly cashier asked me if I found what I was looking for so I explained what food I was unable to find. He did some checking in their computer, and found that some of it was available in other stores in the area, and some could be ordered and picked up at their store (convenient!). That blew me away, and that's great customer service. There are still some sizable downsides to Mud Bay though. Their selection of anything other than canned and dry food, for cats, is, in my opinion, is the worst amongst their local competition. And shopping there is a pain due to the horrible parking situation there in that mall and some fairly short hours. Still, I hold Mud Bay in high esteem and all things being equal do much of my shopping there now. read more

Every time we go to Mud Bay our dogs are so excited that they are crying before we can even get them out of the car. They know the ritual. When they see the sign, we are going to go meet some fun employees and get some yummy treats. We highly recommend them! read more

Their mommas raised them right. Mud Bay is my favorite choice among the local boutique pet stores. Every location seems to be full of great merchandise and very friendly employees. This location in Nyberg Rivers opened on Saturday and it is a spacious location. On every visit I scoop up dog treats for the pups from the bins. You can mix and match ($3.50/pound) from more than a dozen options with different flavors, and grain-based and non-grain selections. Big treats, small treats, all different shapes and sizes and all of the ingredients easily identified. You have the option of using a plastic bag or buying one of their plastic storage bins. If you purchase a bin, when you bring it back for future purchases, you get a discount on the treats so it pays for itself after a few visits. As a company, they do a lot right. From partnering with local shelters (http://mudbay.com/charitable-giving) to having helpful 'how to' guides for dogs and cats on their website. The part that completely charmed me at this location was that because I was an early customer in Tualatin, I received a coupon AND a handwritten thank you note for shopping at Mud Bay. My dog's absolute favorite store. She loves the attention she receives from the staff. Staff are knowledgable and willing to help. I've never had a bad experience at any Mud Bay location. We also love the free treat samples. Of course prices here are a bit higher than big box stores, but the quality of products sold here is so much better too. read more

Mud Bay Tualatin has a great selection of food & treats for our dog. My favorite thing is their self-service treat bar! The store is always clean & organized. Service is very friendly. Our dog absolutely loves it here. So much better & less chaotic to shop here than the big box retailers. One star deduction for the large awkward wooden pallets leaning on a wall of the Ladies Room today. I really feel these could be a hazard or danger to a child and/or Mom with stroller trying to use the facilities. Other than that a positive shopping experience, but I'm a stickler for safety. read more

I love this pet store! I am not a pet owner, but I like the selection and the outstanding service as I buy gifts for my family and friends who have dogs and kitties. The store manager and his staff are knowledgeable, professional and friendly so it's a pleasure to shop at this newly opened location. I liked the fact that they sponsored a giving tree during the holidays and I donated food to a dog; the manager said that due to Sherwood customers' generosity, they were able to bring over a substantial amount of food, toys and supplies to the Newberg animal shelter! Great community service through such programs. I am going to check out if they need more volunteers there now. I am not a fan. At all. I do not usually leave one star reviews but you can purchase from local stores or online purveyors and be much much happier! After constantly being underwhelmed by their hours and service, I actually did the math to see if I was expecting too much. I really am not. Price-wise, online options will win. If you want truly local stores where you do have higher quality foods/treats/etc, there are similarly much better options at local pet stores. Instead you get something here that 'seems' local but feels like a larger company. This nets you...the worst of both worlds. This was my first time in the store and Jason was very patient with me! He walked me around the store and answered questions to help prepare for our puppy. He was very friendly and then let me go wander the store for a bit. He noticed I was on my way out and caught me to give me a thank you card with a coupon for checking out their store! I am very disappointed with the customer service, especially with a young lady named Nikki. Overall, she and another gentleman both had poor attitudes and were not helpful at all. We are new to the Portland area and we've actually had a great experience with different Mud Bay locations. The location on NE Killingsworth St, are such wonderful people! They were extremely welcoming, helpful, friendly and very a pleasant staff. Unlike this great location, I was shocked at the difference at SW Nyberg St. I am extremely disappointed in the service and definitely won't be returning back to this Mud Bay location. read more

Mud Bay is my top favorite pet store. They're on the end of a large shopping center. So if you take the route passing the library you'll miss the congestion from New Seasons and Cabela's. I buy all my treats, food, etc. here. I avoid the big commercial pet stores other than buying toys. The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable. They offer free canned foods and snacks for your pets. I highly recommend coming here! read more

Really great prices and great brands. The staff is friendly and let me shop without constantly following me and attempting to assist. The only drawback is that most of the dog and cat food available here is all chicken based or has chicken in it. So many pets have allergies to chicken, so more variety in meat source would be great. We like beef! They will special order for you, but I prefer to pop in and pick up when I need it, not a week later. read more

I stopped in after hearing from a local rabbit rescue that they carry the best options for bunny's and was instantly committed to Mudbay being my new pet supply store. The store is technically only "soft open" but the grand opening is on April 30th. Still, they are fully stocked with toys, food, bedding and a grand biscuit bar. We found the Oxbow brand paper litter we were looking for, plus a bag of bunny food and a few toys. The staff was extremely patient with me and my wild three year old as they led me to find all the items on my list. I thought prices were reasonable and they had a great selection. In our bag they even included a coupon for next time and a hand written note. It was such a sweet touch and makes me glad to support them! read more

I have been trying to find a large bag of the only kibble my golden retriever will eat. I have spoken to the manager of the store a couple times. Their shipment did not include the type of food I need. The store manager offered to travel to one of their sister stores who had bags available. I was so touched. In this period of daily fears and bad news the kindness I was shown has touched my heart. There are very special people in this world who are willing to help and Mud Bay employs such people. Best customer service ever! They took time to answer my questions about finding a new food for my cats and gave me lots of free food to take home and see what my cats will like. Staff is so pushy and won't leave you alone. If you're one of those people who likes to get in and out without having to talk to anyone do not go here. The staff will follow you and watch you while you shop and then approach you and will think of anything they can talk to you about. Having worked in holistic specialty pet retail for 5 years at the Bay Area's premier independent retailer, I can be quite picky when it comes to shopping for my babies. I know what I am looking for and even what the wholesale is on some items, having worked with vendors and distributors in the past, so I know blown up mark up and honest mark up on pricing. This place is pretty awesome with honest pricing. Smaller than a big box retailer but inviting with a friendly staff, I enjoy stopping in to pick up the specialty items I need for the kids that I can't find elsewhere when I am in town. We live in Salem but my wife works in the same shopping center, so from time to time I get to stop in. They carry a lot of choices in great holistic and natural brands for dogs & cats for food & treats. They have a good variety of toys, beds, apparel, leashes, collars and other pet needs too. They also have a small selection for small animal and some bird stuff too. They are first and foremost all about dogs and cats. Their frozen raw selection is pretty great for an independent retailer! The staff are friendly but not overly engaging and allow you to shop without harassing you. I've listened to them talking the talk too. They train their staff well and they know their stuff. I used to be a training GM and always like overhearing well trained staff talking holistic nutrition to pet parents. If you need a suggestion for foods or treats, they are a really good resource. I wish they were closer to Salem but when I need my kid's daily glucosamine treats, I will make the drive here to get them, as they keep the one type they can eat in stock! read more

I had to take it down a star sadly because of one of the employees at this specific location. I hate even saying this because I love Mudbay so much, and one of the male employees that I see all the time is so awesome. Just not this specific lady. She was a young woman, probably early 20s. She blew air into my dogs face as a punishment I'm assuming because my dog wouldn't hold still. (My dog is still young... what do you expect.) My dog actually used to bare her teeth at me and bark in my face if I blew air in her face (out of fear), so I had to train her through counter-conditioning and positive reinforcement to change her emotional response. And even though I trained her, having a complete stranger do something that once scared you can really harm my training. Also, who thinks that's okay to do to a dog? Don't kids do that to dogs? She wasn't helpful either, as she gave me information I disagreed with. She was kind of rude and seemed annoyed with me asking questions. I won't avoid this location, but I'll definitely avoid it if she's there. read more
