My husband and I have been coming to animal house for years now, mostly for their fish/fish supplies. They've always been helpful and we're excited by all the new expansions in the tank room. While we don't pay as much attention to the other areas, I do see them regularly cleaning the kitten room, reptile enclosures, and rodent enclosures. They also seem to have a store cat now who is rather adorable (some kids do get a little too excited and chase her around which stresses her out, but I think most parents seem to take it as a chance to teach them to that it's not nice to do that.) I just love this store. The staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable. Recently we were in on a very busy Saturday with our new dog. He was super nervous to be in there and overstimulated. One of the staff noticed him clinging to the floor refusing to move. She grabbed a bag of treats and was able to help us fit him for the right harness, which they had to order in. Okay, so I have purchased Rats and mice to feed my snakes for years and I never have had any problems with this store. I went in today after a good 8 months or more since I've purchased any there. All I CAN SAY IS HOW HORRIBLE THESE RATS AND MICE LOOK. For one they are ten times smaller than what they should be. I say a fussy mouse and I get one that looks like an embryo, no hair at all and so tiny it is the size of my toenail. I get one tiny, tiny mouse and 2 rats that are way smaller than one hopper mouse that I'd buy at the other pet stores. I am so disgusted, because it's like now that prices have gone up everywhere, it's a great opportunity for the true scammers to try and get you anyway, they can. This is when I know that I've lost trust in where I'm going. The prices are insane for what I bought. I did go inside and ask the lady, are you sure you gave me the right size? Because, they are so small, and they don't even look good they look completely freezer burned!! she didn't really give a rip, she just said, well you can get a bigger one, while she continued doing something else. Not really understanding that if I Paid what I did for the size I got, then I'd hate to see what they would charge for the correct size. I just walked out, but I will never buy another one again there. They don't even look healthy! I don't like to leave any kind of bad review and I never have, but this is enough. I'll just start ordering from, Rodent.pro. The lady that sold them to me was really friendly and had a good personality until I came in and asked if they were the correct size. So after selling my wife, a small Chihuahua instead of a large rat one that was absolutely too big for my snake to eat and us calling them on the phone and them telling us to go ahead and bring it back and they would exchange it making me drive 30 miles and then tell me something different when I got there and try to keep my money Absolute worst pet shop ever do not go here. I repeat do not go here. They are rude. They made me drive 30 miles away and told me something completely different on the phone then tried to take back my rat without giving me my money back. This place is complete joke, very inconsistent with the size of their rats and the price. So I exchanged it for a medium, which was the size of a mouse so a large is the size of a small Chihuahua, but a medium is the size of a mouse. Can I just get a large rat for my snake to eat. I don't recommend anyone go here at all whatsoever and if I could leave a worse review I would, but I'm sure it would get deleted so we'll just leave it at that. read more

Overall one of our favorite local pet stores. We first discovered Animal House a couple years ago because my son's teacher bought the classroom hamster here. And the result is that the majority of kids in her class developed a raging case of hamster fever. This included fierce competition to be the one who got to take the hamster home for weekends and holidays. Eventually we relented and purchased two teddy bear hamsters at Animal House. It is still one of our regular locations to get their food, because in addition to pre-packaged items, they offer different types of food in bins. The store is divided into several sections: 1) Gerbils and bunnies 2) A fish and aquarium section, which is kept dark with the aquariums glowing so it is a cool area 3) Dogs for adoption (usually around 12 at a time) in the back. The rest is a standard pet store with food and equipment. Dogs on leash are welcome inside, but I don't think this is the greatest place to take a puppy for socialization. The aisles are a little too narrow and some of the treats are a little to accessible for that. When I would bring my pup shopping I would always end up paying for the items I purchased, plus the item my puppy managed to snag out of a low bin before I could intercede. Staff has usually been very helpful and we had fun at the store's anniversary celebration this summer, complete with dog wash and a performance by The Reptile Man (love him!). read more

We have visited Animal House several times over the years and will occasionally buy some items. The store is located in Oregon City off Beaver Creek road. It' is situated in one of those smaller group of stores, but there is plenty of parking. The facility is well-maintained and kept tidy. Our family has been keeping fish for years and recently visited here to look in their aquatics department. Ryan (if I recall his name correctly) the manager of the Aquatics department was very friendly and knowledgeable about the fish, plants and merchandise for sale in his department. Ryan was great, he showed us all of the plants and fishes we were interested in and was able to answer all of our questions. He knew a lot about the fish stock and plants in the store. After showing us some plants and fish, we came home with a L330 Watermelon Pleco and half a dozen Anubias plants. They have a good selection of plants and fish. The tanks look healthy and I could tell that the fish are well cared for. The prices are good and competitive at what you would find fish and plants for within the PDX are. Loved, the fast and friendly service and competitive pricing. The person in charge of the Aquatics department really took good care of us and helped ensured our new fish got home safely. We will be long time customers of Animal house. read more

DO NOT BUY A KITTEN FROM THIS STORE I bought a kitten from Animal House about a month ago. I paid more money for this kitten than I would at a shelter because I believe in supporting local businesses and was under the impression I was getting a good animal. The first red flag I should've picked up on was that they had 12 kittens all running around in a small room. Hm, great way to spread infection and disease. I didn't think too much about that as no one else seemed to have issues with cats from this store by what I could read in these reviews. Plus I have owned cats to some degree my whole life and have never had major problems. The second red flag was the fact that they have a 7-day return policy and will only take the kitten back if it's sick or has a genetic condition. The sick cat also has to have documentation from a vet that states the cat has an issue. No vet's office will get you in within 7-days unless it is an emergency clinic and you pay a lot more money. Their "return policy" is deliberately crafted to ensure you can never return an animal to them. Plus most issues a kitten will have are not emergencies and are not found until the pet sees the vet....which for me was over a month before I could get in. After my kitten's first vet visit, they informed me she has herpes. No, not the kind you're thinking. It's a viral infection that affects the cat's respiratory system. However, it is a virus and my kitten has this for the rest of her life. Not only does she need to be on a regimen of eye drops and antibiotics every time she experiences a flare-up, but she can also give this infection to other cats!! So I would never be allowed to have another cat nor can I adopt her out to anyone who has cats already. Not to mention the financial burden this puts on a person who did not sign up for it. Don't get me wrong, I love this kitten but she is not something I can afford anymore and this kitten deserves to be with a person who will give her the proper care she needs. I am not someone who lives a life where this is feasible. Animal House sells unhealthy animals and then refuses to do anything about it. "Too bad, so sad" is their actual return policy. Again, DO NOT buy anything from this store. I will no longer give this business my money and I encourage you to really do your research and determine if purchasing an animal from this place is worth the risk. If you ask me, it isn't and I hope you heed this warning. read more

Never even made it into the store and I never will. I recently lost my cat of 16 years and called to inquire about kittens. The kittens are overpriced at $300 with no shots, no deworming, and no vet check. The woman who answered the phone was so rude and condescending. I am a grown woman in my 30's who pays my own bills, and this woman was reluctant to give me information because she kept telling me I needed permission from my parents before I could adopt. I boarded my Cockatoo Jordi at Animal House for 9 months. They were the cheapest boarding in all of the Portland area. The People there were great with my bird! Especially Kayla! Unfortunately I lost my job. I talked to the owner and he let me leave Jordi there for three months without paying. I eventually paid the bill and took Jordi home. This is where the story goes bad. When i picked my bird up AND the cage i originally left for my bird to stay in, it had been taken apart and several pieces were missing. I have been in several times to retrieve my missing parts and have got the runaround. And an attitude from the owner. I don't think I deserve to have my property stolen from me when I was told all along that he was OK with me being late on my payment. Am I wrong? read more

I have had a great experience everytime I go into this shop. Their prices are spot on with being competitive and they've replaced broken items that I have purchased with no questions asked! They're on another level than any other pet store in the area. The manager Ryan was able to help me out in the aquarium department far better than any chain store employee I have delt with and his knowledge of aquatics is impressive and very helpful. He didn't have a product in stock that I needed so he got it ordered and at my request, contacted me when it came in. Great service. This place is stuck in the early 90s when it was somewhat acceptable to sell puppies and kittens in a pet store. This place is the type of place that keeps puppy mills in business. While I was there they have mixed breed puppies for 500$ and More and normal everyday kittens for 200$. The cages were tiny and tons of feces and urine built up in them. Went to check out the fish and the filters are turned up so high that the poor fish continually struggle to keep from getting smacked against the tank sides causing a bunch of unneeded stress on them. I'd suggest getting rid of the puppies and kittens and focusing on providing high quality food and care items and keeping the remaining animals clean and healthy. read more

My granddaughter and I made a stop at this pet store. We were standing by a large boxed area with about 10 rabbits and assorted Guinea pigs. When suddenly a young woman jumped inside of the box and grabbed a rabbit . Dropped it on the ground, quickly dropped a plastic basket over the rabbit on the floor. Next to the box in a cage were two baby hairless Guinea pigs, shaking in horror, as we were. It was cruel and in humane. It was horrible to see such animal abuse. While the store had fair prices on things- I was just about to cry- I never shop at small pet stores, only PetSmart and PetCo, but I really needed something for my dog that night. Went into Animal House in Oregon City, and saw the saddest puppies EVER. Standing with their tender paws on grates, dirty cages, hovering over piles and piles of poop, and all alone WITH NO TOYS OR ENTERTAINMENT. It pissed me off. One was so bored he was biting metal! It was so hard to walk away from one in particular, but I know that if I take him out of there, it will just allow for another to take his place. The employees make the experience 5 stars. Ryan is the reptile/fish expert. He spent hours, on numerous occasions, answering my son's questions. When we were ready to purchase our bearded dragon, Ryan walked us through the entire store telling us what was a necessity and what was a nice to have. We never felt pressured to buy anything on the spot or from him. Cassie knows my kids by name. She always stops what she's doing to give my daughter the opportunity to pet, hold, and answer her questions about any animal. Animal House has a good selection of merchandise, food, and small animals. I appreciate that I can get my specialty cat food there, and not have to drive to Happy Valley. The girls who work behind the counter are always very nice. They make sure to ask if you have discounts coming your way, and are helpful when it comes to finding out whether discounts are available. I do not like that they sell dogs and kittens, but that is my personal view on the matter. If you are looking to buy a kitten or puppy, you will be spending $100-$900. They do not have animals for adoption here. Animal House has plenty of fish, often birds, and some reptiles in the back. They sell mice, crickets, and other living food for competitive prices. They have a rather large selection of cat trees up front, ranging in sizes. I see cute homemade looking dog treats up front every time I go in. They sell Advantage and Frontline at retail price. Unfortunately, they no longer sell the individual doses of them. read more

Update: I've never gotten rats from a petstore that have gotten this sick, this fast. Came to me with a severe lung infection that only got worse with all the TLC I could give them. I can't really speak for the rest of the animals, but they have no right to house rats the way they do. 20 to a single level aquarium tank. Mixed genders, all extremely sick I'm certain because Mycoplasma Pulmonis just breeds like wild fire. If one has it, they all have it, and it flares up when they're stressed. So unfortunately, even giving these babies a clean new home, lots of room, warmth, and everything they need, they only got sicker.
