Amazing locally owned shop! We went in to ask about Tortoises for our son and owner (I believe) walked us through the care giving process the pros and cons and pricing to help get us started. I honestly wasn't thinking I was going to buy one that day but he made us feel so comfortable that we whole heartedly jumped in. The shop is amazing looking with all its unique wildlife and vegetation that you don't see at corporate chain shops. Very dismissive staff. I told them I was saving for a reef tank. I come from a fresh water background, and the most I got from my questions were 1 sentence answers, many answers were one word. The employees seemed more concerned with their conversation between the two of them. I will definitely looking elsewhere when it comes to buying my red sea reefer. I want a shop with employees that are enthusiastic and eager to help, Like World of Wet Pets, is for freshwater. Not a good experience. Walked in today with my kids and immediately spun around and left after seeing the two employees without masks (I'm not talking about masks pulled down under their chins-- no masks on their faces, period). This was honestly my first time seeing an employee of a store not wearing a mask at all since this whole pandemic began. To think that these guys don't have the common courtesy to wear a mask to help protect their customers (and themselves!) when the highly-highly-transmissible Omicron variant is raging is reason enough in my book to not give them your business. I've been coming to Upscales for over 15 years and have delt with a number of vendors for over 40-years has a saltwater/reef hobbyist. Have built a number of large reefs and can say that Travis and Tom understand the hobby/reefs VERY well. It's worth the trip to check out the store and meet them in person. You will find them very knowledgeable an lacking the BS of loading you up with worthless equipment. read more

When I visited it was water change Wednesday and they were very busy but took time out to go over several corals, snails, rock etc. then showed me there process to making water for their systems. This store does not care about its customers safety. Went in there and the man behind the counter wasn't wearing a mask nor was the customer he was taking to. When I approached the counter to ask a question, I asked the man to please wear his mask. He rolled his eyes and sighed at me and reluctantly put it on, but did not cover his nose. He was also very rude and unhelpful. We left and will never go back. We're in a global pandemic and this business can't do to literal bear minimum and wear a mask to keep its customers safe. I will be reporting them to OSHA as well as the health department. We're a whole year into this. Get it together! read more

How to even begin... My first time going to Upscales-Fish & Reptiles will be my last due to many issues I had with the facility and the person running it. I went to go purchase a water dragon late July and called in to see if they had any available. He let me know they had one left. When I got to the store my friend and I immediately asked about the water dragon. When looking around the tank for the water dragon, my friend and I noticed there was inadequate lighting, an extremely dirty tank, along with grimy nasty brown water in the pond like structure. The lizard came out from hiding and my friend asked to hold him. When we took the lizard out, he had a scar seemingly from ear to ear across his mouth, only 2 fingers on one hand and all 5 on the other but one was necrotic and about to completely fall off. His spikes were burnt black. He looked skinny, malnourished, dirt brown and was shedding terribly. My friend asked the employee what was wrong with him and why he had so many health issues and he stated "well we got him like that about three months ago" The employee was asking $45 for the lizard but my friend offered him $20 because of the extensive care we would have to get him to keep him alive. I've included two pictures the day we got him. We let him bathe in water which helped clear the shedding a little but we could not find out what the scab was from. It ended up coming off with soaking in the water enough and the minute he was able to open his mouth he drank all the water he could. The scab was not allowing him to eat or drink for God knows how long. He has a huge appetite now, has gotten his rightful coloring back and is healthier than ever. The other two pictures are of my lizard 3 months after leaving Upscales-Fish & Reptiles. I would never recommend this place to anyone in a million years for reptiles or anything reptile related. If anything go there to save the reptiles from this poorly kept facility. read more

This is by far the most amazing saltwater shop I've been into, the owner is extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. I have been doing business with him the past year for both reptiles and fish; I'm super pleased with how he is willing to give you a bit of a deal on anything that isn't labeled with a price or if you're in need of the hide that the reptile you're getting is currently using he will cut you a deal on that. The reptiles and fish their are all healthy and the ones I have gotten are doing extremely well. I noticed someone said there was an oder to the shop... it's an aquarium store you're bound to have a little smell of saltwater. read more

This place has gone down hill in the past few years. We go here for the aquarium stuff, and coral. But being a reptile enthusiast I love seeing them. Went in yesterday as my wife needed stuff for the fish, I was looking to get a crested gecko. To my dismay, there was 1 tank that had a crested and also a dead carcass of a gecko. I told the worker, who didn't even know how to open the enclosures, and he covered it up with a log because there were other customers! The water bowls in EVERY enclosure were mossy, like not slime but moss growing up out of the bowls. They were dirty and fecal ridden. I almost wanted to buy the living one just to adopt it and get it out of there! Just disgusting and appalling. And one the way home a bag of coral started leaking water all over my wife's lap and the car. Beyond disappointed and won't be returning. read more

WORST customer service ever!!!! I would NEVER return to this store. We brought our kids in to look at fish - the kids were very well behaved - however, they did TOUCH the glass on one of the tanks (they did not tap or bang, or anything else) - but you would have thought they had climbed in. The guy "working" ran over and told them he'd just "windexed" the tank and that it was a $30K tank - My son noted that it looked like they had polyps in the back and asked if they were raising jellyfish - he was answered dismissively "I don't know - there is a lot going on back there". When asked if they sold Jellies he was told "no" (we've seen them there before - I suppose they could have stopped carrying them - but it just seemed to go with the attitude). He smirked and waved, windex in hand as we left. *Just because they are young, does not mean that they do not have allowance, birthday and Christmas money to spend - their parents have been know to purchase a thing or two as well. We'll buy our fish elsewhere thank you. read more

The guys that work during the day and on Saturdays always make me feel like I am interrupting them and ask stupid questions. I have reluctantly returned a few times on Sundays because the selection is good and that guy is attentive. I made the mistake and went during the day on Friday. Zach filled my container with fresh water instead of salt water. Then when I told him, I really wanted salt he made it seem like it was my fault. He poured the fresh back (now contaminated) and shorted me one gallon salt. I was so upset I called the owner. No apologies to me and just defended Zach. He could have at least offered a free fill up next time. Beware! Never buy water from here! read more

I don't know anything about fish so I can't speak about their care but I know about reptiles and let me tell you, this place should stick to just fish. They had a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon in the same tank and that's all I feel I need to say about it. read more

I have been shopping at Upscales since 2006 and almost exclusively since 2008. I actually found them through a referral from another LFS in the area; their display at that time was a thing of legend and I even took my parents and friends to see it when they came in from out of town (separate trips). It was the tank that inspired me to get into stony corals. That tank has since been torn down, but a new very impressive display is still in the shop. One of the reasons I like to go their so much is because you just never know what cool thing they have that week. Upscales has cornered the market on SPS in this region since well before I found them. Some of the frags are priced so low it is ridiculous for what they are. The store doesn't juice their lights so when you take them home, that is actually what they look like. The same frags of what they sell go online for 3-4x as much. In addition to SPS they have a great selection of LPS, Softies, Fish, and Inverts at reasonable prices. Having a store owner with so much experience who will tell you straight out, "this is what I use, that is what my tank looks like," is amazing when it seems so many try to keep "trade secrets". Travis has always been there to answer questions, even when you have to wait in line to talk to him, and if you ask him he will give you honest advice even if it means costing him a sale (Just today I was at the register buying something and he showed me something for less then half the price that would be better for me). I have always enjoyed talking to the other staff there as well. I think Barry is a great guy (especially for being an A's fan) and always helpful. He's just a great person to talk to about your tank. Tom and Zack have always been fun as well. When you need advice, it's nice to ask someone who knows. When you need an odd pump part a good LFS will save your butt. When you need water in a jam, or your tank cracks and you need to stash your corals somewhere. A good LFS is so valuable to the hobby. I meet a lot of people in this hobby, and I ask everyone, "Have you been to Upscales?". If your into reefing, this is the destination spot in the Portland area. read more

I can't believe no one has written a review for this store. This is one of the best spots in the Portland area for saltwater fish and coral. Their display tank is one of the most beautiful I have seen, it's worth stopping in just to see it. I know currently they run a buy one get one half off special on all corals, which is rare in this hobby, and you can really get hooked up here. Prices are fair and the staff is knowledgable. You can by RO/DI water from them I believe, and they have a lot of hardware, too, I don't know how pricing is on this stuff because it is always cheaper online. I knocked a star off for two reason, 1) they have tons of flat worms in their tanks. I always have to freshwater dip to make sure my tank doesn't get over grown, once this issue is out of hand it is very difficult to solve. 2) sometimes customer service is a bit lacking, the guys that work there can be a bit short, and sometimes you feel like they are looking down their nose at you, but that is pretty common in this hobby, so you kind of have to get used to it. All in all, like I said, one of the best joints in the metro area for this kind of thing, definitely check them out. read more

Will never go anywhere else. Been coming here for a little over a year. Started my saltwater tank and had no idea where to start besides the tank and stand.. Spent about an hour with my fiance talking about how to start and all tips we needed to know. Now we have such a beautiful tank and have never had trouble with coral or fish. I would recommend any new tank owners or old tank owners to go here for all your saltwater fish needs. Also they have great used tanks and other goodies that are pretty cheap and good quality. Never looked at the reptiles so have no idea. read more

First off I owned a saltwater and freshwater store my self for years and Travis taught me allot over the years. I have 30 + years of reef experience and I know firsthand how difficult it is to be a free zoo for all you loser parents. When I was going under in 2008 a parent that came in every Saturday with his two kids that got money for birthday's and what ever and yet they never spent a dime in my store. He said sorry you are going under and I was thinking well if half of you spent any money in hear I wouldn't be losing everything I worked for. You don't get how hard it is to deal with every one that want's every thing for free or match the internet price when all there gear comes out of a warehouse some where. I am really not one to write reviews but after visiting this store today, I am very disturbed and disappointed at how they care for their reptiles. To start off, all of the reptiles water looked as if it hadn't been changed in a very long time. Most of the reptiles water was green and growing algae. Secondly, they had a (very) large bearded dragon in a tank that was way too small. It seemed like this beardie didn't even have room to comfortably move around or even move from the spot it was in. Lastly and most disturbingly, they had a water dragon on-sale for $30 due to a "clipped tail". When I went in to get a further look at this water dragon, I was in complete shock. This poor reptile was dead and basically shriveled up. I could tell that his tail wound was not at all taken care of and it looked extremely infected, which is what I'm guessing may have caused this reptile to pass away. This has been weighing heavily on my mind since I was there this morning and I just feel like something really needs to be done to prevent something like this from happening again. Sadly, after reading other reviews I can tell that their subpar reptile care has been occurring for awhile. read more

Shopped a few fish stores when I started with my Reef tank, back in 2013. Made the decision to switch from freshwater to salt, and came by several times before buying the setup here. I had already had the tank and sump, so needed the rock first, and some corals. Travis was great every single time I stopped in, even the times when I didn't spend money. I bought a few things from the other stores but the majority of all I get now, is from Travis. He is always good at helping me, and sometimes did so with issues that were not his fault. The other guys are great and helpful as well. Over 2 years in this hobby I have learned a lot, had the growing pains, the losses, and equipment changes. I will always buy from this store. read more

This store is awesome. The best selection of SPS coral I've ever seen other than in coral reefs! Fish selection is great, they have rare imports such as Harlequin Tusks as well as standbys such as Damsels and Clowns. They have great selections of coral such as Xenia and Mushrooms for cheap prices, awesome macroalgae, live rock, all sorts of shrimps and crabs, and great reef cleaner prices. All the cleaners are placed in seperate tubs so that they can be picked out by the dozen if needed. The only thing they could have more of is actual tanks, but otherwise a great store. read more

Upscales is always our first choice when it comes to our saltwater needs, I'm in here almost once a week so I've gotten to know the shop pretty well. We run into Tom most of the time and Tom has been fantastic when it comes to answering our questions about coral, equipment, fish, you name it and he's genuine and helpful with his advice. The owner Travis is also great but honestly Tom is the reason we keep coming back. They've got an awesome selection of coral and will usually order something for you if you don't see it! read more

Reptile care very concerning. In one small (maybe 20 gallon) tank together was young bearded dragons, an adult tortoise, and a baby water dragon that looked dead. These animals are not compatible and require far different habitats.. They also had an adult leopard gecko in with an adult Jackson chameleon pair?? Anyone who knows one thing about reptiles knows that this is wrong and abusive. This might be their solution to not having enough diaplay tanks? No matter the reason, whoever is in charge of the reptiles should be ashamed. Ive seen pet stores with less-than-ideal conditions for reptiles, but never different species together like that. Fish and coral selection is good, I'll give them that. Even if you plan on buying fish there, just keep in mind the quality of life they give their reptiles. There are plenty of other saltwater fish stores to go to around here who don't treat their animals so poorly. If you happen to run an animal rescue, consider picking a few things up at Upscales. Might give them a fighting chance. read more

I cringe to give it one star. Salt water setups may be fine, but the reptiles and amphibians are badly kept. The tanks are mislabeled and they mix species on horrible substrate and bad temperatures. Created geckos, day geckos, leopard geckos, and fat tails should not be kept in the same setup. Crickets were left in cages but I saw no fruit diets or greens for the omnivorous species, and with the mislabeling any idiot would buy a pet and not know what it was. The adult axolotls are kept on small pebble substrate, at severe risk for impaction as any axolotl breeder would and should know. Every reptile/amphibian was kept on bark with one heat lamp and no UVB. Come on! They had a depressing day gecko lapping at dried and probably days old remnants of diet, and a pathetic little leopard gecko lying half on its side. Their chinese water dragon was almost full grown and shoved into a twenty long that it could not even extend its tail in. The tortoises were labeled as Russians but clearly not all Russian, and every tank had similar mislabeling. I walked in to get some insects, and left disgusted. I refused to buy anything from that shop, and until they fix their serious care issues, I advise other people to not throw their cash at them either. read more

I am new to the area and was excited to check this place out. I have had a slight fish addiction since I was a child. So, I was hoping to find a new store to feed my hobby. Boy was I wrong. Yes, this store has a lot of saltwater creatures. However, I was utterly shocked to see that many of the stands that are holding the tanks are covered in rust. The place is dirty. Saltwater tanks are tedious to care for and the presentation of the store calls into question their ability to care for the animals. I'm very interested in chameleons and initially was excited to see them here. That quickly faded when I got close to them. They have several geckos here. All the reptile tanks have excessive feces in the tank. The geckos looked healthy to me. However, one of the chameleon has a badly infected eye. I wouldn't doubt that he will lose it. Glass tanks, lots of feces leads to bacterial infections and sick and dying reptiles. The reptile supplies are covered in dust. I don't even know how to express my disappointment. My child begged me to leave this place. He has been reading about how to care for chameleons for about three days and he was very saddened to see the state of them here. I would say most kids might not notice these types of things but I guess this speaks to the state of this place. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully, someone is on vacation and they will get this placed cleaned up. read more
