Visiting Memphis last summer was fun. The hubby had to go for work so I went along. I wanted to see Memphis. We were in the hotel right across the parking lot from Muddy's. Very bad for me! I spent a lot of money in Muddy's and I made two trips. It was worth it though. From the cupcakes to the Pecan Pies to the trailmix cookies...perfection! Cupcakes are very good. Moist and not too sweet. Got the red velvet, and they were good. It is not too expensive and o have one every so often. They do have long lines at times. So be prepared to spend some extra time to wait for your cupcakes, and that can be a hard thing to do. read more

Muddy's is the best place for cupcakes in Memphis. I have yet to meet someone who has tried Muddy's and didn't like it. My co-workers will celebrate anything for an excuse to go get some Muddy's. The customer service here is unparalleled. The owner, Kat, is a complete class act-- on pie day this year, they ran out of the free slice they were giving out after an hour. So instead, a table was set up with red velvet cupcakes (I understand the selection changed throughout the afternoon) and a coupon for a free slice of pie at a later date. As if I didn't already have a problem staying away from chocolate...this place is like my kryptonite. My favorite would have to be their prozac. Coincidently those also happen to be my father's favorite. The staff is always super friendly and engaging. Their cupcakes are always a go-to for me to give to friends on any occasion. Very affordable and quite an array of flavors. I also must add that one time I went in on a Saturday night around 9ish in Nike shorts and a T-shirt. I was getting my dad cupcakes for Father's Day. Naturally, I felt borderline emo about hitting up Muddy's solo on a Saturday night. I go to spray perfume before I get out of my car and boom....sprayed it right into my eye. I kid you not. Don't get it, overpriced, small cupcakes. Perhaps I'm old school, but, I'd rather pay $4 for 6 cupcakes at a deli in a grocery store than $6 for 3 smaller cupcakes from Muddy's. I am not that crazy about cupcakes but enjoy them occasionally. I picked up 3 for my wife and daughters. And had a bite of each, WOW these are awesome! They are about $2.00 each and fairly small but a nice treat for the wives and little girls that enjoy cupcakes so much. Cool and interesting flavor combinations. read more

My last morning in Memphis, I was craving a really good cupcake. Healthy, right? But I read in a guide-book that they had something called a Prozac cupcake, and knowing I was battling a healthy dose of the Leaving-Tennessee-Depression-Blues, I knew this was exactly what the doctor would have ordered. I'm a psychology student, you can trust my diagnosis. As always, I checked out what the interwebz said, I read the reviews on yelp because you can NEVER trust a guide book for anything decent when it comes to food. Just a heads up I believe the open at 10am during the week instead of the posted 11am that it says here on yelp. Yay to an hour more of cupcakes, amirite? Anyhoot, I walked in and was greeted by two very sweet employees who let a very overtly stimulated person with ADD, check out the shirts, the baking accessories, the ready-to-go dessert section before wandering on over the refrigerated case of wonder. I really do appreciate sales people who don't pressure me, when I first come to a place and let me take my time checking everything out. These gals were super professional and friendly without making me feel rushed. I finally made it up to the counter and took a look at what they had. On one side of the L shaped counter, resides the pies and puddin's. So many wonderful looking fruit pies and chess pies. Even some specialty bars made their appearance in this case. As much as I wanted to try that delicious looking cookies and cream pudding, I was here for cupcakes. Though I almost pulled out all the stops for (all) some of those pies. I did end up buying my mom a coconut chess pie, because she LOVES coconut. She said that it was one of the best pie crusts she's ever had. It was flakey, crumbly and just "to die for". She loved the coconut shreds in the pie, but said you really have to enjoy shredded coconut to like this pie. Can't be on the fence about coconut when ordering this delicious bad-boy! At a 90 degree angle is the other case full of the cuppy-cakes. And while I have to admit, they don't look super impressive. They aren't whimsical, outrageous, ostentatious, or beautified. But you know what, they don't have to be. Simplicity is best. When you have a good cake recipe, when you have good frosting, and you have good flavor combinations, you don't need all the glitz. I feel like a lot of places use decorations and toppings as a way to hide mediocre cupcakes. But not Muddy's. And for that Muddy's has my respect. So I tried the Pucker Up which is a lemon cupcake with a lemon frosting and the Prozac cupcake- a chocolate cupcake with a chocolate frosting. That Pucker up was the right blend of tart and sweet. The frosting here at Muddy's, I am going to say it, is the best I have ever had. Hands down, THE best. It's creamy without being too heavy. It's slighty melted, so it's not rock hard and has that fake- waxy taste. And it picks up every flavor that they are trying to convey, without getting lost in the sugar. The lemon cake itself was good, but I found the top to be a little over-done/dry. The cake that was further down in the liner, was very good. It just needed to be a little more moist. As for the Prosac, that was probably the BEST cupcake I have ever had. Definitely the best CHOCOLATE cake/ chocolate frosting of my life. It was decadent, but not overpowering, it was sweet without being too much. It had the fine lightly bitter taste from use of good dark chocolate. And man-oh-man, the cake was so moist and fluffy! If Muddy's could make every cupcake have the consistency as the regular sized Prozac, they would be an unstoppable Tour De Force. I will say it was super cute, how they had tasters of their cupcakes in mini-form for guests. That actually really helped me decide that I was going to be a fatty and get 2 cupcakes when I only came in for one in particular. And the mini's were not dry at all. Overall, good solid cupcakery, though it would be nice to see a flavor that was a little more on the creative side. They play it very safe here, which isn't a bad thing, but maybe once a month they could try doing something different, if they don't do that already! The only other thing I would like to see is a more prominent beverage system. I knew from online that they do sell coffee but I couldn't really figure out from where. It was sort of pushed back to the side, so I didn't know what they had or what I could order, or from who. I think they could push out some good revenue if they brought that into the forefront. I interior is so inviting and calming, that I would love to get a cupcake and some coffee and spend time inside. But I don't get that feeling, being the way it is now. Maybe it's something they can develop in the future. Great place, get a Prozac, and watch your depression be literally eaten away to the very last chocolate crumb. read more

Sweet tooth beware because you will want to come back for more. This is a must try for anyone who loves sweets! I had the chocodoodle (chocolate with cinnamon icing) cupcake and fell in love! The icing wasn't over powering and the cake was outstanding. This is the perfect quaint place to chat with friends over delicious sweets. Stopped by here after a movie in the area. There weren't a lot of choices left at 9:30p, but I was able to snag their red velvet cupcake and a vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting. Can't remember how much they were, but a 5 spot only yielded a bit of change. They were pretty good cupcakes, not cloyingly sweet, and the frosting was a good buttercream as well. Awesome variety of cupcakes in this cute bake shop. The PROZAC cupcake though. Oh. My. Gosh. I've never had chocolate frosting as magical. The chocolate cake was moist and delicious. You know it's a good bakery when the chocolate cake isn't dry. I also tried the SNICKERDOODLE. Again, frosting was great but the cake was a little dry on this one. I really hate to write this, but Muddy's is slipping. I have been a fan since they opened and noticed that as prices have inched up, quality has declined. The past few times I have visited, the cupcakes have been dry, the toffee bars have tasted stale, and the cookies, brownies, and toffee bar servings are smaller. What used to be my go-to place for special treats now cannot be counted on to provide quality items. The staff is still friendly, if not a bit on the cautious side. Based on things I have seen while in the shop, I am wondering if management is putting pressure on them. I certainly hope not, but the demeanor of the employees has changed over the years and I don't think it can all be chalked up to different people working throughout the time the shop has been open. It might just to be time to move on and find a new go-to treat spot. read more

Honestly, I couldn't taste what the hype about Muddy's is all about. I ordered both the strawberry and the prozac cupcake and they were mediocre; nothing special about the taste of either one. Unfortunately, I'm not a person who just likes to eat and thinks that everything that goes into my mouth tastes good. The cupcakes from this place are absolutely delicious! They are always moist and sweet but not TOO sweet. They are made with a special type of icing that is to die for! It has a sweet creamy milky taste to it (&I don't even drink milk). There is only one other place that I would compare to Muddy's Bake Shop in the entire Memphis area. In addition to delicious cupcakes, the staff is always extremely bubbly & pleasant. I have never experienced anything less than perfect customer service from here (& I would come as often as twice a week). It is located in an area that may be difficult for a nonMemphian to locate.
