The vegetables were cut a bit bigger and didn't carry much flavor. There were sauces so that helped. They offer many different vegetables from sweet potatoes, onions, green beans, pumpkin... even eggs. Staff was nice and dining in is a food court type of seating. It was something to try while we were in the area.

We went to Mugumaru in Mitsuwa's market last weekend and we came early before opening. About 10 minutes before opening and there were already quite a few people waiting in line. Their food since they just opened were nice and fresh! I love their tempura items. We got to try their grilled eel which we never see except this time around. I love their hot udon bowls with a soft boil egg. It is in a food court so a very casual spot to go to for food! Perfect for a relaxing date.

First visit to Mitsuwa market and decided to start at the food court. The place was packed. Not a single available table but luckily only had to hover a few minutes until someone left. The food court has many options - all Japanese themed - but this Udon noodle themed restaurant seemed the most appetizing. Price of the basic udon bowl is great. Regular size bowl was huge. More than enough for a single meal. And they have many options including beef, egg, etc. Then there's a "buffet" style tempura addon section where you add whatever you want on top. I got the beef udon. Very tasty. And I added the egg tempura (a hard boiled egg deep fried in the tempura batter) and a thick slab of sweet potato. My date got the spicy udon and added a veggie and a mackerel tempura. Total price was $25. Very reasonable. The biggest issue was they did not offer a beverage option. I had to go to another counter and just buy two cans of coke. So another $5. Would definitely go back but just be aware it's loud, at least when it's busy. And because of the rarity of tables they didn't seem to get cleaned. We sat down the minute the people vacated the table and another couple were hovering next to us an sat the minute we stood up.

Stopped by the grocery store and decided to visit the food court to get some food. Tried a few things and one of the things that peaked our interest was the udon bowl at Mugimaru. It also had the longest line of any of the other shops so we ordered ourselves a bowl of udon with beef. Its a food court but I expected it to be a good bowl of udon. I was disappointed. the noodles were fresh but the broth didn't have a lot of flavor and was lukewarm. I expected it to be hot so was surprised when I didn't have to cool it at all and fou8nd it just a tad over room temperature. To help eat this, I went to get some spiced sauce which cost me extra but at least helped the flavor. Overall a disappointing experince and I was really hoping for better bowl of udon.

If you're seeing this review twice... it's bc it's in 2 places since I'm not sure which page gets looked at more. This quick food stop is located in the food court of mitsuwa. There are a few udon options to pick which protein you'd like and also if you'd like your soup hot or cold. There are also tempura sides you are able to grab (additional price) on your own. The udon noodles are fresh and taste deliciously homemade. This is reasonably priced but can get expensive if you decide to add multiple tempura sides.

We love visiting the Asian market, it's such a different cultural experience than a regular grocery store, but the main reason we go is for the restaurant area. There are multiple places to get food. You order at the restaurant and grab a seat at an open table. It's not the most beautiful sitting area, but the food is totally worth going. We try new dishes whenever we can, but our favorite broth is by far the Tonkotsu Udon from Mugumaru. We get spice on the side and add to our taste, but the broth is just amazing!

Love this place inside the Mitsuwa Shopping Center. The prices are reasonable, the veggies and meats and seafood taste fresh, and they aren't very greasy...you start out by choosing your base: broth or noodles, etc. Then you select any of the tempura you want. I had Shrimp, Green Beans, Pumpkin, Lotus Root, Chicken Karaage, Pork, Sweet Potato and Vegetable croquette. My favorites are the Pumpkin and Sweet Potato. The Shrimp is third. Prices range from $1.20 each piece to $1.85 for the chicken karaage. The Pork Katsu is $4.30 (for two pieces) and it's VERY good.

The tonkotsu udon is the most perfect dish I've ever had. The broth is rich and creamy, and the pork is thick and always good. I'm unsure about the rest of their udon, but my boyfriend loved the beef udon. The noodles are thick and chewy in the best way. The staff are quick and polite. The food court seating is a nightmare during the weekend but the food makes up for it. Weekdays are the best.

They were out of toppings and the service bordered on rude but the upon with tofu was delicious. Yummy broth, sweet crispy tofu. So good

One of the restaurants inside Mitsuwa market place, Mugimaru is seemingly famous for tempura and udon noodles. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 7/10 Average as seen out of all of the restaurants available in Mitsuwa, though I do appreciate how their tempura is front and center to entice you to stop bey and grab a few things here and there. SERVICE : 8/10 Cashier was fast and courteous. FOOD: 8/10 Seeing as udon and tempura are the selling points here, those are the options we ended up deciding upon. Kitsune Udon - Staple udon with sweet fried tofu as the centerpiece. I found the udon noodles to nice and chewy but the best part was that tofu. It has such a good flavor. The broth was also not watery but had a strong stock behind it too which I appreciated. Vegetable Croquette - I've seen this all the time in anime so I really wanted to try it. It was kind of like a potato-veggie mix that was crunchy outside and soft inside. I really liked it. Definite must try. Aji Tempura - This was really good. Fried fish is usually pretty delicious, and this was no exception. It wasn't very fishy in flavor and I enjoyed it a lot. I think this is worth a try. Lotus Root Tempura - I've had bad experiences with lotus root before but I was persuaded to try it again and I was very pleasantly surprised with this item. I really like it a lot. The lotus root had a nice robust texture to it and it was very well flavored. Sweet Potato Tempura - I knew this was going to be good. And it was. Think sweet potato fried but better. That's what you have here. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 8/10 I'd want to come back here to try more of the different tempura options. TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: I think the udon was average, but I really enjoyed the tempura. Go and try it if you find yourself in Mitsuwa! OVERALL: 8/10

Several restaurants at the Mitsuwa Food Court have been converted (read as replaced) and Mugimaru is one of the new replacements. We hadn't tried it before partly because we are creatures of habit and we keep going back to the ones we know and like. Also, when we initially checked out their menu, it seemed that the different varieties of Udon were reasonably priced but adding individually-priced pieces of Tempura could add up quickly. Then there was a Tempura restaurant two booths away. We finally decided to give it a try. We figured out that it is set up with lots of flexibility because you can just order one of the Udon dishes; you can add one or more pieces of Tempura to make Tempura Udon; or enjoy extra pieces of Tempura by themselves. They also have Aji Fry (Mackerel) and Veggie Croquettes to eat with Tonkatsu Sauce and Japanese Curry Rice as well. We decided to order Ontama Udon. On the side, we picked one slice of Onion Tempura, two Shrimp Tempura, two Sweet Potato Tempura. Two Aji Fry and two Veggie Croquettes were also added. We added one Shrimp and one Sweet Potato into the Udon and the remaining Tempura pieces were eaten as Tempura to dip in Tempura sauce that came with Daikon Oroshi. The Aji Fry and Croquettes were dipped in Tonkatsu Sauce and eaten like that! In the end, we had several meals in one and everything was delicious. One concern I initially had was picking a la carte pieces of Tempura and other fried items that were sitting under a heat lamp. We were there just as they opened so everything was hot and more was placed there as we were ordering. Also, they were getting enough customers that they were constantly adding freshly fried items. The staff were very helpful and friendly in explaining and answering questions. We will definitely be trying more choices and combinations in future trips to Chicago.

Tonkatsu udon and spicy tonkatsu udon with tempura veggies

I still come here for lunch every time I shop at Mitsuwa. Yesterday I strayed from my usual kake udon and tried the tonkotsu udon (interesting that the ramen place in the food court didn't offer a tonkotsu option...), along with some tempura (lotus root, sweet potato, and my favorite, kabocha pumpkin). Gotta say, this was good but I prefer the kake udon. The tonkotsu (rich pork) broth is very creamy, but it gets pretty salty halfway through, and wasn't super hot either. My boyfriend fared better with the spicy version, though beware because it IS spicy! The spice seemed to cut the saltiness, though. Service was fast and friendly, and they do take credit cards here, unlike much of the food court. I will definitely be back, but likely won't stray from my old favorite again.

    Ali C.

I had the sweet potato tempura a la carte and two pieces of shrimp tempura. Nothing extraordinary - the sweet potato tasted better because it had just been made, whilst the shrimp had obviously been sitting under the heat lamp for too long. This is an interesting place with menu items and then tempura by the piece. I suppose if you visit right after they're freshly made then it would be great.

There's also discrepancy in their menu and what they actually have available as it seems they also display items for the the cafe next door. We happened to arrive during happy hour so some menu items were discounted. They also have a complimentary salad bar. We ordered chicken karaage, potstickers, salmon avocado sushi, and I had the katsu sandwich. All the food items we ordered came separately over a span of 20+ minutes, with the sandwich arriving last and cold. Not only did the sandwich come on a cold sourdough bread, the meat also had an unusual texture and so I ended up throwing it out. The other items we ordered were lacking in flavor. The chicken karaage was prepared well but it had no flavor. I'm regret spending money at this establishment.

So we got out of the car and saw someone pull up in front of the restaurant and jump out at 11:59. As soon as the door was unlocked at 12pm, this customer went in, and a few others after them. This is a small joint, and it was already half full by the time we ordered, then sat down (they told us the table at which to sit). I didn't know, but asked, and found out that a salad bar and miso soup are also included. The salad bar was pretty decent, with fresh vegs. They even had French fried onions (my guilty pleasure) and a very good House dressing (ginger vinaigrette). The portions are enormous. The couple next to us got ramen, and it was practically overflowing. We ordered takoyaki (too much food, we didn't need). I had the Pork Katsu bowl and my companion had a Katsu curry. I wished I had ordered the curry -- it looked dark and rich and thick like pudding (not like a boxed curry). They also gave us a bonus piece of chicken karaage which was so large and crispy. I think I'll get the curry next time, or the ramen. We originally came because we were going to get a karaage sando, but get the curry.

And so it goes.. Parking in this small strip mall is usually pretty easy. It is a popular choice for lunch for many people that work in this business area of Elk Grove. I think that is because in addition to the good food, the service is not only friendly, but also very efficient. That allows you to have a nice sit-down lunch and still get back to work in time. They don't rush you, but you won't have to wait long for both the food and the check. Today I did have my delicious bento box, which as others have agreed, is a great deal for lunch. But I also splurged for a "Rock' n Rol" sushi roll, which was quite tasty. My waitress was wonderful - friendly and efficient as usual. But she didn't rush me personally. She even asked me if I wanted tea. In summary, it's an excellent choice for lunch. Good food, affordable, kind people, and a nice change from a fast food drive-thru.

If you're looking for the most authentic Japanese food outside the city, seems like this and a couple other places are all in the Schaumburg/Elk Grove Village area. Highly recommend hitting their lunch menu if you can because the bento box values are so worth it for authentic Japanese food/sushi. We got there at opening for dinner on a Saturday and got there just before dinner rush! This place is such a hidden authentic gem - you can tell from the decor to the choice of seating design to the actual menu and way they cook the RICE and other dishes. They serve the same grain for sushi as they do regular rice (Tamaki gold). Quality is not skipped here. We got the agedashi tofu (must get appetizer, as it's hard to really every achieve at home cooking), house special curry katsu, the beef kurumaya gozen (bento box) (which has incredible tempura, juicy soft beef), and assorted sashimi platter (I forget the name). All come highly recommended and were well worth the price point. I am just a bit sensitive about the freshness of the sushi, but I think this is probably as fresh as you can possibly get with generous cuts outside the city. Everything down to the miso soup too was delicious - best place to take your friends/family/coworkers for an authentic Japanese meal. Parking lot available out front. Recommend also stopping by Tensuke market nearby after!

If you're looking for quick eats while doing some Asian grocery shopping, it's definitely worth checking out. One thing I really like is that finding a table isn't difficult. They have a separate dining hall with plenty of long tables and seating, plus a free-refill miso soup station and a water station for convenience. Pricing here is noticeably lower compared to Hmart. The udon noodle soup is a family favorite, especially for our kids and moms. At Hmart, a bowl of this would run about $15-16 but here for $12.50, you get a generous bowl plus a side like two egg rolls or gyoza, and a small miso soup bowl with seaweed and tofu (you can refill the miso soup at the station). If you skip the side, you save about $1. The Godzilla roll is also a great deal--eight large pieces for about $14. My oldest loved it and was completely full from the sushi. They also offer poke bowls and chicken teriyaki rice plates, which my husband ordered during our visit. My only gripe is that many of the dishes tend to be on the salty side--they could definitely tone that down. Our udon broth tasted good, but we ended up adding some water to dilute it. They also offer discounted cooked hot and cold items--sometimes 30% to 50% off--after the dinner rush (probably after 7 PM). I picked up a large container kimchi pork soup to go for under $5 but it was also quite salty so I took most of it home, added more water and it was perfect as leftovers next day. Ordering is simple: you select your items and pay at a kiosk, enter your buzzer number, and it will vibrate when your food is ready for pickup at the counter. Eating inside a grocery store has its perks--you can grab extra snacks or drinks to customize your meal, and then browse the store afterward. Our moms and kids always enjoy coming here with us--it's definitely more fun for them than a typical grocery run. Overall, prices are reasonable and they run good deals. It's smaller than H Mart, so there are fewer options, but if you prefer a less crowded and more relaxed environment, you might actually like Tensuke better.

The noodles were cooked perfectly and I really liked my soup. The tempura was nice and crispy, but I would have liked some sauce for it that wasn't spicy chili. Though, the chili oil was good - hot but not too much so. My husband was also happy with his meal, and I did steal some of his tempura sauce. We didn't have to wait too long even though everything was made to order. The staff were friendly and patient with my indecisive self. I'm definitely going to be back, hopefully sooner rather than later. While I do prefer udon, soba is a great change of pace and I'm happy for the added variety of food offerings!

Spicy tuna can be done with chili oil vs spicy mayo if you can't do eggs. Spicy tuna with Chili Oil is better in my opinion. It is so good Service is attentive and overall very good. No complaints. If you like Japanese food I highly recommend this place.

Our waiter was helpful in answering all of our questions about the extensive menu. Tako Wasabi: A small bowl about the size of a pointer finger, but packed with lots of small, strong pieces of octopus; chewy, savory, with a sharp and fragrant wasabi kick. Leaned on the salty side, but very unique! Beef Tataki: The yuzu sauce, very sour, pairs well with the raw steak, with a side of fresh seaweed Japanese Spaghetti (full): Al dente, chewy pasta with a tangy flavor and a creamy aftertaste, with a side of parmesan and tabasco to add if you want; shareable between 2-3 people Buta Nira Moyashi: Slightly crisped pork with a good balance of lean and fat, served on a generous bed of chives and crunchy soybeans, comes with chili pepper to add if you want; leans a bit on the salty side Curry: A huge bowl! Celebrated a birthday, they gave our birthday person a small free matcha japanese cheesecake with a candle. :)
