Mitsuwa GROCERY - this review is more geared toward the ramen place in the food court, but this marketplace is a must stop for japanese products/snack and sushi. The fresh produce is overpriced and can be found cheaper at other asian grocery stores, but so many great fresh fish and japanese-specific food, alcohol, and household/haircare/bodycare products you can't find elsewhere. Everytime I visit Mitsuwa, I always get ramen. Always walk by this place and the food looks appetizing. I ordered their Chicken Katsu Curry. I'm not really into curry and to be honest I didn't know Japanese cuisine consisted of curry dishes as well. The chicken was good but I did not like it paired with the curry. Not my cup of tea. I also ordered their Gyoza and they were just ok as well. Nothing special. Stopped by Mitsuwa Marketplace on a very busy Sunday afternoon. Seeing that there was not a long line for this location decided to try this one. In addition, this is one of the few that had an option to order online via the QR code. we ordered a Beef Sutodon, an order of Karaoge, and a combo plate. Nothing stood out especially, lots of rice in the bowl (which is a plus if you're all about sauce and rice). The Karaoge had a bit of a potato chip flavor. Wouldn't recommend going to Mitsuwa during busy times unless you plan on taking the food to go, it can get very difficult to hunt down a seat! read more

While in Mitsua Marketplace, we went back to the food court to get lunch. I was intrigued by Sutadonya and decided to give it a try. There are three ways to order, one, you can order at the counter but they prefer you either order by scanning a QR code, or using their online kiosk. I used the kiosk. They have a wider selection than shown on their website. I decided to try the Kara Sutadan, a spicy, garlicy rice bowl with a soft boiled egg on top. Once you place the order, there is a credit card swipe you use to pay. You're given a number, then called up by number when the food is ready. It only took five minutes or so before my number came up. They yell out the number, and with the noise in the food court, it's kind of hard to hear so I stood close to their booth so I wouldn't miss my number. The bowl came out and was presented very well. Rice was on the bottom, the pork and sauce next (there were lots of sauteed onions), and the soft boiled egg placed gently in the center. It looked better than it was. Although it was okay, I expected a little better. The sauce wasn't particularly spicy and the meat seemed a bit undercooked. So, for ease of ordering and presentation, they get a 5, but since the food is the main reason for going, I knocked off a few points. Sorry - no pictures this time. read more

I wouldn't go out of my way to come here for curry but it seems it is always the fastest moving line when i go to Mitsuwa on a weekend and it is a complete zoo. they have a kiosk you can order from which seems like it makes the line move quickly. on that note they only take credit card at this vendor. the chicken katsu curry i got was pretty dry but the dish overall was pretty standard and flavor was good. I've discovered a location that can satisfy my craving. Some of the items they provide include rice, which is a plus. I immediately placed my order via kiosk since this is a counter service restaurant. I swiftly found a seat after submitting my order; now I'm just waiting patiently. It may seem like an eternity, yet my sacrifice will be rewarded. I was irritated to find out my meal was done without knowing when it would be ready because the staff didn't bother to contact me or yell my order number thankfully I was paying attention else I'd be starving to death. My mood altered once I had the food and returned to the table. The food was served in a to-go plastic container with a lid, which I thought was a good idea in case folks couldn't finish their meal. It's a basic rice dish with nothing special to say. It simply served fried chicken over rice. The chicken was still hot, and the outside was quite crispy with a satisfying crunch. I personally think they overdid the sauce because the rice had been drenched in it. The sauce is tasty, but there is far too much vinegar flavor. Sadly, I wasn't very impressed by the Karasutadon that I ordered. It was pork belly strips mixed in with rice and onions. Initially, I thought the price was reasonable at $9.99, but was disappointed that there wasn't much content to it. I could taste Lao Gan Ma in it, which is a great Chinese condiment, but I guess I didn't expect it at a Japanese place! It was a series of emotions with Sutadonya. Overall food prices have gone up everywhere, so a $16 rice bowl seems to be on par with most places. The booth is empty, so you're left with a self service machine. I don't hate this, honestly, it's fine for me and the machine works smoothly and easily, just feels a bit cold. I get a text notifying me of the order, but as I'm working on my phone mindlessly for prob 10 minutes I look up to see a tray of food has been sitting there. Possibly, long enough for the chicken to get cold. Not sure why there's no notification. Even the ramen shop next door announced numbers, no text?!? Anyway, I was feeling a bit mad, but the big bowl of curry sauce was warm and sitting on top a nice big piece chicken cutlet soothed some of the wounds. It comes in a take-away plastic bowl, which at first is not very eco-friendly, but portions were big that I didn't feel forced to finish either and packed it away. Now, I can't be mad. Came here with my daughter and her bf after being in the area on business, and decided to stop for lunch. The ease of being able to order food was very nice, and it came out extremely timely. I have to say though that I wasn't super happy with the flavors of the dish I ordered. I got the signature pork curry and the pork came out in a way I wasn't expecting (very thin) so that's on me for not understanding that. Blah! This place is not for me at all. We visit Mitsuwa routinely, and have always given Sutadonya a miss, since it didn't look like something I'd enjoy. However, we finally tried it today, just in the interest of trying something new. In the end, my first impressions held up. We were forewarned that it can take a while to get your food after ordering, so with that in mind, we were prepared to wait. The food didn't come real quickly, but I didn't feel the wait was anything too over the top. We provided our cell number so we could be texted once the food was ready, and just wandered around Mitsuwa until then. I ordered the Piri Pork with Vegetables. It looked a bit like Chinese food, and did sort of taste like a kung pao dish. It had a bit of heat and was quite heavy on the peanut sauce - especially in the rice. Speaking of which, I would say that rice fills up about 90% of the bowl. I am glad there was so much cabbage in this dish, because I didn't care for the meat at all (what little there was). It was like very thin ribbons of pork fat, and had my least favorite sort of pork flavor - almost gamey, but worse. My husband originally wanted the teriyaki pork bowl. Although it is the Number 4 item on their posted menu, the touch screen you order from didn't have it? We checked every digital page, and it wasn't there. So he went with the headliner, the regular Garlic Pork Bowl, instead. I would say his dish tasted a bit better than mine, especially if you like heavy garlic, which I do. That said, it was just as rice-heavy, and the pork was of the same quality. We also tried the pan-fried gyoza. It was pretty tasty, but also kind of heavy on the butter, which I assume it was fried in. Still, this was probably the best thing we tried from here. This is absolutely junk food, through and through, which can sometimes hit the spot. But, even by that standard, this is just not for me. There were very little amounts of pork in the dish, but the sauce was decently spicy. So, not busy yet at all. When my order was ready, they did not make a call, and left my order on the counter and kept chatting. 4: On the wall of the take out bowl, they smeared foods and did not wipe it off. So every time I tried to eat, my hand got dirty. And they did not provide napkins either. So, I felt those employees took more seriously about their chatting than their own products nor customers. Found myself in Arlington on a business trip, and I was delighted to find a Mitsuwa marketplace right next to my hotel! If you're familiar with the market chain, then you'll know what to expect when you go in. Mitsuwa is a Japanese grocery store, usually with a fantastic array of food shops arranged in a food court! My usual go-to in Mitsuwa is Santouka Ramen, but while I was traveling, I didn't bring any cash, or a debit card to withdraw any, so I ended up at Sutadonya! Thank you so, so much for accepting card! The menu is posted out from, and there's a lot to choose from! What looked like their most famous dish was the Sutadon, or garlic pork bowl. Although I love pork, I am also not too heavy on just meat and rice, so I opted for their Sutamina Teishoku, which is essentially the garlic pork bowl, but with a nice amount of cabbage on the side. I also ordered their egg and seaweed soup. The food was a great portion for the price! You get a large plate with cabbage on half, and your garlic pork cooked with onions on the other. You also get a generous bowl of your choice of rice! The pork was flavorful, however I found it to be a little too salty for my taste, even with the rice and the cabbage. I was grateful I also ordered the soup to help quench the salt! Overall, the meal was okay. I don't think I'd be dying to go back any time soon, but for those that like a lot of meat, packed with rich flavor, they should give Sutadonya a try! It just wasn't for me! read more

Thankfully I noticed that the gyoza I ordered were burnt on the bottom and refused them at the counter. Why put bad food in the package if you can clearly see the black crust on it??? It pains me to have to give a restaurant in Mitsuwa, the motherland of Japanese goods in the Chicagoland area, such a low star rating. Why may you ask? Well, let's just say that I rather have eaten the plastic katsu curry model than the actual meal itself. For about $11, I ordered their katsu curry which was literally four small pieces of fried pork cutlet over a heaping plate of rice and some instant curry that you could make at home. The batter fell right off my pieces of meat and that's not a good thing in this case. Pork was chewy and the curry/rice combination was decent at best. I was so underwhelmed by the meal that I thought about getting a bowl of udon from the shop next door to satisfy my stomach. I didn't end up doing such thing, but it was truly dissapointing to see such potential wasted at Sutadonya. Not much to say here, it's based inside Mitsuwa's food court which is basically always packed. SERVICE : 8/10 Cashier was really nice and the order came out very quickly. No major problems here. FOOD: 8/10 I went for their curry which was one of their signature items. Katsucurry - Beef curry with fried chicken chunks and white rice that blended almost perfectly. The soft mix of the curry with rice combined with the crunchiness of the chicken was really delectable. The portion size for around $10-11 was actually very good. I think this is a good staple item to try if you come here. Egg Seaweed Soup - Pretty simple soup that is a mix of egg and seaweed with a little bit of sesame for flavoring. The soup had a nice clear flavor that was not too salty and a good side option with the heavier curry dish. Burnt gyoza still in the same rows they came frozen in. Busy? No, we were one of only two orders in line. 1. Running out of one of the most popular classic don-ya menu items before dinner is not impressive for a Japanese eatery. Particularly if it is, in fact, a don-ya. Which Suta-donya happens to be. It's even in the name. Over course of dinner, we watched as two others tried to place an order for katsu-don and get their orders rejected. 2. If the kitchen intends to do a scrubdown that would interfere with frying a gyoza order, either reject the order or put off the scrubdown until after dinner hours. Don't accept the order only to slap two rows of five gyoza dumplings each still sticking to each other onto the pan and forget about it while you're juggling who knows what, considering you had a mere two orders to deal with at the time the order was placed. The gyoza arrived still stuck together in the same two five-in-a-row lines they clearly went into the pan in, where they were left long enough on one side only with no tending to that they formed blackened crusts that smelled burnt and further added to the stuck nature of the gyoza from the pan drippings burning and solidifying into a blackened substance. Mmm, cancer. Sounds absolutely delightful. Also, guy behind the stove, why drop two dinky to-go packets in a saucer for our dine-in order? The sauce bottle is right by you, and if it's too much effort for you, we certainly ended up preferring walking up to pour our own to the two sauce packets that both ended up spraying all over the tray in being opened. So glad the same guy had all the time to chitchat with the cashier right after pushing out our order and scrubbing down the cooking area - perhaps regulars at this Mitsuwa knew better than to order here. Ordered the chicken katsu curry, which was a pretty large and generous portion size for lunch! Great flavor in the curry (ft. some sliced pork as well), and the chicken katsu was very juicy and crispy, but I still would have very much preferred a traditional pork tonkatsu instead. The chicken texture just doesn't work as well, in my opinion. They used to have pork tonkatsu when they first opened, but for some reason, made the switch over to exclusively chicken katsu...I could never understand why. Nevertheless, the red pickled daikon on the side was excellent -- sweet, tangy, and crunchy -- making a great palate cleanser for the relatively heavy curry and chicken katsu. FYI, they don't provide free cups of water anymore (maybe it's been like that since the pandemic started??) and only sell bottled water now, so I would recommend getting a bottled iced green tea from inside the Mitsuwa grocery store area to complement your food, as the curry/katsu is pretty hot when it comes out. read more

I tried four items here and was pleasantly surprised and how simple, but delicious they were. The Fried Chicken came with two huge pieces that were fried to a crunchy crisp, marinated in the sutadon sauce so they were extremely juicy and tender. This was topped with the yuringi sauce, which gave it a delicious garlic flavor and was slightly tangy. The great balance and contrast of textures in this dish make me want to try the katsudon on my next visit. The sutadon, as expected, was the true star of this dish. The real elegance was in its simplicity -- sweet onions, garlic, and shoyu which help to flavor sliced pork belly. This is on top of a bed of soft, fluffy short grain rice and served with a perfectly fluffy spring egg. There's really nothing particularly fancy about any of the ingredients here but what really makes it work is the quality of the ingredients combined with the perfect balance of the mix of ingredients. Combine this with great technique by the chefs and you have a delicious combination. The tokachidon was simpler than the sutadon, although also tasty. It comes with teriyaki marinated pork slices that are thin but full of flavor, with thin slices of ginger and onion to help cut down on the saltiness. The katsudon wasn't the crispiest version I've ever had, nor was the meat the most flavorful or tender -- but it was still an enjoyable version of the dish. I wish the sauce had a bit more sweetness and tanginess to it, but this was still good. Great food, comparable to the food courts I had in my last visit to Asia. Save yourself a 13 hour flight and have some great Japanese comfort food here. read more

I was in the mood for some katsu curry, so I decided to try their deep fried chicken curry. The line was long and it seemed to take a while for each person to order. Not sure if the customers were just indecisive, unsure, or just slow. Anyway, when I get up to the counter, the guy behind the counter says, "Just a minute." Calls out 3 numbers. He was pretty short with everyone, except for the one young, pleasant looking guy that walked up. That was the only smile the cashier flashed. He turns to me and asks for my order. As I say, "Number eleven, can i get the katsu sauce on the side?" He is simultaneously asking if it is to go or dine in. He cut me off and said in a short, louder voice, enunciating well, "Dine in or to go?" This tone always pisses me off because it is the tone morons who work somewhere use to make you feel like you're stupid. The only thing it makes me feel is that you are an ass. The food was not good. The curry was just okay. It was full of onions and a little meat. That's about it. The rice was not very hot. The chicken, oh, the chicken. Right now I am hoping I don't get sick. The katsu was made with chicken thighs. They were too tough to eat. The breading was really thick and when you bit into it the breading all fell off. Or, maybe it fell off because the chicken was slimy. That's right. I said it. Slimy. I was so grossed out. I couldn't eat it. I, seriously feel like gagging just thinking about it. I went to Sutadonya on the day it opened (and roughed out an insanely long line) and went again last week (when the line was nonexistent). It's safe to say the initial appeal of Sutadonya has worn off...but with a couple of new places on the horizon for the food court at Mitsuwa, expect lines to grow once again at those spots. Sutadonya has food displays in a case next to their stand which I'm sure is helpful for people but it kind of creeps me out and seems like a waste of space. Especially because above this display are photos of the items. Ah well! Whatever it takes for people to understand what they are ordering. +They take credit card. +Portions are huge - like too much for me to eat in one seating! +Food is decent but not mind blowing. +Service is fast & food is ready quickly. +Prices aren't horrible but I also wouldn't call it cheap. Their chicken karage is tasty with four large pieces but something just pains me paying $9 for this dish when I know I can get the same hot food portion, albeit without rice, for $3 at Tensuke. Both of them have been here previously and had a fighting knowledge of some (all?) of the food outlets past and present. This was my debut at Mitsuwa, so all the food places looked good to me. We all wound up ordering lunch from Sutadonya, one of the newer establishments which apparently took over the slot from a Japanese burger place. Sutadonya (Densetsu No Sutadonya) is a chain of restaurants that originated in Japan in 1971. There is a video loop that played above the menu and accompanying plastic images of their food items, with some of the history of the Japanese chain. Ordering was easy enough, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they accept credit cards (most or all of the other outlets are cash only). My order was ready for me fairly quickly (apparently the lunch crowd on this particular Monday afternoon was lighter than the norm). I suppose some of the food items might take longer to prepare than others. There are self-serve water dispensers if you do not wish to order a beverage. One of my buds ordered the Number 1 item - the Sutadon (Stamina pork bowl) with pork belly, garlic, onions and rice. The Sutadon is regarded as its star dish in Japan. My other bud ordered a similar rice bowl but with an egg on top, and he also ordered a side order of gyoza dumplings - I tried one and it was tasty. I ordered the Number 11 - the katsu curry dish. The breaded pork cutlet came with curry sauce with onions, and a generous portion of white rice. I'd say the pork tasted ok, while the flavorful curry sauce was actually the star of my dish. read more

Sutadonya is a perfectly fine place to get lunch. This shop is located in the food court section of Mitsuwa Market. Seating is like at any other mall food court; first come first serve. They will give you a number when you place your order, and call you up when it is ready. I have been to Mitsuwa before, but not to this particular food stall. My dad and I decided to order separate things from different shops to share and try out, and this was his selection. We decided to order a #11, which is Katsu Curry. It is a fried, breaded pork cutlet served atop rice with a curry sauce ($8.99). It took a while for the food to come out, but when it did we were pretty impressed with the portion size; it was massive. The two of us were able to eat a good amount and still didn't finish everything on the plate. The pork was the best part of the dish for me. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The breading was crispy and golden, and the pork inside was soft and tender. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't even need the sauce. That said, the sauce was pretty good too. It had a nice flavor to it, but I don't know that I'll remember it five meals from now. I'd return to this stall in the future, but it wouldn't be my first pick when looking at the available options within Mitsuwa. read more
