Made a reservation last week. Fair price. Spoke directly over phone to book. When I arrived they couldn't find the reservation. There was an available room but of course at an increased rate. Have used this place multiple times when having home repairs done and I can't say enough good things about it. It's quaint and unassuming, but always very clean, inexpensive, and close to everything you need. The staff is always kind and accommodating and the check in and out process is quick and easy. They also have little chairs outside the rooms which I'm a sucker for. Highly recommend! read more

It's one of the worst places I've stayed in a long time, and I've been to about 15 Hotels-Motels-and inns with in the last month.... When we first arrived at the Muir Lodge Motel, we were greeted by a young lady at the front desk, followed by what looked to be her mother and father. They didn't say hello they just walked through what I assumed was their lobby. Whitch was fair because they had some kiddios with them. (Note:so I'm sure this motel is family owned and operated). The girl in the front was friendly but unfortunately informed me that we weren't allowed to use a verchual card for "TAP PAY" ,and if we didn't have a physical card they would have to charge me 100$ extra and I wouldn't be giving it back for the deposit. I thought that was expensive and unfair!! Luckly i had one, but what if i was down on my luck and lost my card that day, what then? If you think about it most people do have cards now and days and if you come upon someone who doesn't the majority of the time it's due to being stolen or lost. so that person not only has to pay for all new cards but now there hotel is charging them extra 100$ without giving it back as usual... To me, this just shows how much they care for the customer. So the first room we were given smelled like someone smoked 3 packs of cigarettes in the room before she gave it to us, which I did not appreciate because she didn't even ask us if we wanted a smoking or non smoking Room!!... We then requested another room. This room was just as bad!!! The smell was DISCUSTING!! I filled the tub with water to stop the RAW SEWAGE SMELL from coming out of the TUB!!! Unfortunately, when it was full, it may have looked like clean water, but it smelled RAW SEWAGE AND IT MADE US SICK!! There was also tagging in the bathroom!! I COULD TELL THEY DID NOT CAER IF IT WAS CLEAN OR NOT DUD TO THE SMELL OF URINE COMING FROM THE CORNER OF THE ROOM, RIGHT NEXT TO WHERE YOU LAY YOUR HEAD DOWN TO SLEEP NEXT TO THE BED!! NOT AT THE FOOT OF THE BED NEXT TO YOUR HEAD!!!! ALSO THE FACT THAT THERE WAS 2 PIECES OF TISSUE IN THE TISSUE BOX NO TOLIT PAPER AND THERE WAS A NOTE PAD 1 PIECES OF PAPER!! IM NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING!! at that point, why even put the note pad in there? in the morning, I informed the young lady of everything that had gone on. She was apologetic, but not too much so, instead of taking responsibility for the lack of cleaning due to the maids or lack thereof, meaning the cleaners were the family, not actual maids.... She continued to say "I need to find out who stayed in that room last and call those customers", as if it was the customer's fault that their room was disgusting and wasn't even properly filled with toiletries. Thats on the customer. In my opinion its on the motel and Maids or the family they had acting as maids. Not the last customer that stayed there.... I found that comment to be somewhat offensive because im sure she told the next customers the same thing, That it was my fault that the room smelled like pee in the corner,and poo in the tub.... The one good thing is we didn't have to sleep with our heads next to the smell of piss because there was two beds.... 5 STAR FOR WINNING ONE OF THE MOST DISCUSTING PLACES IVE STAYED IN MY LIFE!!!! read more

Good and the bad? Okay here goes: The Good- I rented a room in this motel for FOUR nights, so we had a decent amount of time in which to form our opinion. Check-in was relatively painless. We got our keys and went in our room. The room seems pretty clean, no major issues there. A couple observations were that the bathroom sink, as modern as it appears, is very loud when you run the water. I mean really loud. And you can hear when the next room runs their water too. The other thing is, it the John Muir Motel, so you kind of expect the theme of the rooms to be consistent with the name of the place; maybe traditional or somewhat rustic. But that's not the case. The decor is definitely modern. Not bad, just not matching the flavor of the area. Grey and purple walls. No pictures on the walls. Chrome and minimalist decor. Again, not horrible, just not what you'd expect. Our first three nights were pleasant. It was Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There didn't seem to be too many other guests so things were fairly quiet. There was a guest who talked loudly and made noise at 5am, but at least it was over quickly. Okay, now The Bad: But now tonight is Sunday night, our last night. And boy were we in for a shock. We don't know who all was out there, but it's now almost midnight, and there have been several guys right outside our room, sitting around cooking on a grill, making lots of noise and smoking so close to our room that the smoke was coming in. Unbelievable how rude you have to be to pull that kind of behavior. So now I'm still trying to calm down from it so I can get to sleep. This type of thing should not be allowed to go on here or at any motel. It's too bad this last night's experience had somewhat marred our stay. read more

The family that operates this motel has put the mo' in motel. Bottled water and breakfast pastries in the room for no extra charge, complimentary ear plugs if you want solitude. I didn't find the place to be excessively noisy, but like all motels you're never far from the roadway, so if you're a restless sleeper then the ear plugs would be handy. The rooms have a huge closet, I mean you could fit a crib inside if traveling with a baby like your husband. I turned our closet into a man cave for the night! The rooms are nicely remodeled and they bathroom is very nice. Many hotels are doing away with those little bottles of shampoo and soap. There are nice big shampoo and soap dispensers in the shower. Rooms have a small fridge and microwave too and the obligatory Mr Coffee style drip machine. Oh yeah the toilet has that old fashioned paper wrapper that says it was sanitized for your protection. After the day from hell traveling, I was just wanting to get off the road and rest. Booked online while traveling there was easy enough, and my very late arrival (1 am) was not a problem either. As I rounded the corner the neon signage was a beacon of hope in the dead of night. This is a very cool old school motor inn with parking at the door. This vintage motel is clean and comfortable, my room was modern and updated (all plugs have USB ports) with all new fixtures in the bath area. Free wifi worked well. My room #2, was very nicely appointed, laminated flooring throughout, a very comfortable king bed, two sitting chairs and a small table seating area, a decent sized work desk and chair, along with the usual coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave and flat screen tv. Nice modern bathroom and shower, with plenty of hot water for my shower, cool raised bowl sinks and modern fixtures and good oversized towels (not the usual small thin ones) and nicer quality than most. Check out was a breeze and I was on my way again, feeling better than when I arrived. This is a neat little family owned and operated motel, and a very reasonable price for the area. Other than the cockroaches, it was great! At first glance it's a quaint little mom & pop ran motor lodge. I cannot bring myself to give them a 1-star review, because I understand cockroaches exist and have a mind of their own. But my sister awoke with a roach in her hair on our last night at the motel. So this was a horrifying experience for her, and she can't even talk about it. I dealt with the pest, and we tried to get some sleep, which of course didn't happen. I had to wash the ice bucket, the shower curtain had black mold on it, and BONUS - I woke up to a cockroach in my bed/in my HAIR. The place is clean, rooms are nicely updated which include a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. The manager is very accommodating and friendly. Oh WOW!!!! So I made a booking online. I thought the booking was for that very night, it turned out it was for the next night, as I'm told when I arrive by the "owner" and "supervisor" who refused to give me his name. When I said, okay, that's fine, will you please help me cancel it? His response was- literally- "I don't want to." No I'm not kidding he really said that, more then once. When I, in total shock, tried to explain that I need to speak to his manager, the phone rang. He put his hand up in a "talk to the hand" motion, and I STOOD THERE FOR UPWARDS OF FIVE MINUTES WHILE HE TALKED, AND CARRIED ON A CONVERSATION IN A TOTALLY FOREIGN LANGUAGE. I was absolutely shocked. As a matter of fact, five minutes is a very conservative amount of time. It was more like seven to eight minutes, possibly a tad longer, but let's call it five minutes just to be fair. So, while I was waiting, I figured out all on my own how to cancel my reservation. I would have had time to walk across the street, get a drink, and come back. When he finally got off the phone, I asked him to speak to a manager. He clearly, deceptively answered to me he is the owner and manager. When I asked for his first name, he literally, again said "I dont want to" (tell you). I was so absolutely shocked, confused, and put off by this mans behavior, I did something I thought I would never in my life do. I said, okay, so here's what's going to happen now. I'm giving it 2 stars because the room was not too bad. The screens were about popped out and the shower was a very strange set up. The true issue I had with this spot is the location and overnight visitors in the area. At around 11:00 the "neighbors," started yelling, screaming, and crying. There was obvious drug and soliciting taking place here and it lasted on and off for about 5 hours. Kept waking me up with kicking of doors, throwing rocks, and top of lung screaming. When I called the next day to complain the first question/response from the Tennant was "are you sure,?" He was then very apologetic but mostly just expressed that no one else complained which may be true due to fearful reprisal from said noise makers. I will never stay here again to say the least. It was a last minute selection as I usually stay at Marriott. Good luck with this area. read more

They gave me a room that wreaked of dead rodents. I asked for another room because the smell was unbearable and they told me they were completely booked even though only 4 cars were in the entire lot. The women from India who worked the counter came in and sprayed air freshener all over the place. Then I got to smell cherry flavored Dead rats until midnight when I finally left because I couldn't stand it anymore. We were in Martinez for my son's basketball tournament. We were in need of a place to stay over night. Found good reviews on Muir Lodge so decided to book a room here. When I arrived there was confusion at the front desk. The attendant stated the system didn't show the room was paid for however it was paid upon booking with hotels.com. I logged into my bank account, via my phone, to show him that the money had been withdrawn. He asked for credit card, I assume for incidentals. He assured me no additional cost would be applied - issue resolved. Now for the room: It was in fact as the reviews stated, very clean and updated (modern). We had a room with 2 queen beds. The beds were comfortable. Nice remodeled bathroom although I must mention the shower was a pretty small space. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because the air conditioning unit seem to keep only half of the room cool. Overall pleased with the room. read more

We are staying here now and checking out in the morning and I absolutely love this place!!! It looks like a old time 50s motel outside but very clean and on the inside it is beautiful and updated and clean! They even have a cute little complimentary breakfast in your room and a coffee pot and bottled water! The bathrooms were very clean and all around we are happy here! I don't have any real complaints besides my car getting keyed because I had to park too close to the line to clear a big pick up on my left. Way nicer than my boyfriend and I anticipated! We were in the Bay for his birthday and the motel was incredibly comfortable. They give you a ton of pillows on the bed, and the room was quite modern and clean. The room featured a microwave and mini-fridge, and was quite large. The his and hers sinks and HD lighted mirrors were a welcome touch. They provided ear plugs, but we were not bothered by the street noise at all. Got into San Francisco on a Wednesday thinking a room would be easy to come by and not even factoring in that it was Memorial Weekend. Found this place on hotels.com, a bit out of way but only $220 for 3 nights. Get to the place and we're given room 10, walk to the room and it's being cleaned. The woman asks us if we can wait 30min. Sure! We head a lil further into town, stop at a store for necessities and whatnot, and come back. Still not done. I was a bit annoyed ( 8 hr drive from los angeles) and wanted to wash up and relax before meeting up with a friend. So the woman at the desk was nice enough to upgrade us to a bigger bed in room 7 that was ready. Thought that was nice. Left and met a friend, had dinner, when we got back noticed one of the rooms had a lot of luggage sitting outside of it with the door closed, and a lady dressed kinda provocatively? sitting on one of the benches on her phone. Ok whatever, none of my business. Watch a lil cable and my bf and i go to bed around 11. 4am the cops are right outside of our room(when u open the door you are directly in the parking lot), lights flashing and screaming "get on the ground! Get on the FUCKING GROUND!" Not the best way to wake up on vacation! My bf said he heard a woman screaming and making noise and looked like a hooker. Should we have payed for this place by the hour? Yikes. The next night I took a shower (very low water pressure) and the wall outside of the bathroom where the sink is rattles loudly the whole time. Alright whatevs. Get dried off and use the toilet and when i flush i hear a loud gurgling in the bathtub drain, followed by a little bit of brown water coming up and a nice (not nice) smell. Ok im not freaked out by stuff like that and nothings perfect. Go meet up with friends in Oakland for dinner and decide to sleep in til 9am the next morning since checkout is at 11am. I told my bf i would shower first since i would take longer getting ready. As im showering i hear gurgling from the drain, then notice the water isnt going down. Ugh. Gross. But what can i do? Im mid soap and its already happened. Finish my business and wash my feet over the edge of the tub really good after. I use the toilet after and when i flush, brown water starts coming up outta the tub drain and the toilet water starts to rise. This place has obvious plumbing issues. Otherwise,it was pretty lame, my bf never got to shower (he washed up in the sink) and he had to use the bathroom really bad so we went to the Valero gas station down the street. When i told the woman when we checked out she listened and said oh ok, im sorry about that. If you just need to use the bathroom you can go into room 9 and use the toilet. Nooooo, it's not the toilet. It's not being able to shower and feel fresh before going to breakfast or before heading back home. 1 star for being decent priced 1 star for being LITERALLY right next to the home of John Muir ( and he was a badass dude) read more

This motel is okay...Partner and I stayed there two nights. As he was leaving one morning, a passerby accosted him asking him to purchase a room for him at the hotel. Traffic from Alhambra is pretty loud, and I wouldn't have felt safe staying there by myself as a female. The bathroom light didn't work, so we showered in the dark, and the staff wasn't very well trained to answer my questions about the area. read more

The place has been upgraded and the interiors are nice. No carpets to get dirty, the tile on the floors and the bathrooms are really nice. Nice vessel sink, lighted mirror and nice shower with a glass door. I'm far away from the office but the wi-fi is fast. They don't have the limited cable I have been stuck with at some large hotel chains. They have Dish, and HBO too. They provided two waters, two packaged sweet rolls and coffee, and on the night stand are two packs of earplugs. QUIT IT ! I just noticed they have nice looking pump containers in the shower for shampoo and body soap. Great value for my stay. read more

We stayed one night(Room #7). Remodeled room. Complimentary bottled water. Comfortable bed. Nice little pool. Pleasant lady at the desk, easy check-in. I felt the dark color in room made it more dark. A/C seemed to cool half of room-but husband pushed the curtains up out of the way, which helped! Some of the remodeling work done was sloppy(glue on bathroom floor by wood floor). The John Muir Historic Site is less than a mile walk from motel, highly recommended! I would suggest that pictures in the room were of mountainous scenery because of the hotel being named after John Muir (we had a picture of Venice which definitely doesn't fit). I hope they will redo the motel's historic neon sign. Would stay here again. read more

I was given a smoking room that reeked of ashtrays. I went to management to request a change in rooms due to smell. I had just arrived for an important interview and did not want my suit smelling like tobacco. The manager stated that that is the room that I selected and there is nothing he can do unless I pay an extra $20. I reluctantly agreed and was presented with a credit card charge of $30. read more

After shortly checking into my room, I had to leave without getting refunded. The smell of the room was so intense it made me feel sick. If you're not a smoker, I would not recommend. This was an incredibly wonderful stay. The management was on top of it here. The room was clean and actually quite cute. Fresh linens and a spotless tile floor. Mattress was a spring with box spring. Comfy. Motels are usually basic, but here you really got more than expected. Snacks and water daily. WiFi and a microwave and refrigerator too! Terrible! The staff was pleasant. The first sign of trouble was the locked lobby. Try have to ring you in. Next, there was a sign posted implying that it is common to rent the room for a few hours. Very strange people on the porches. Our room was not thoroughly cleaned. It smelled strange. When we woke up in the morning, our front doormat/porch was covered in litter. This is by far the nicest motel I have stayed in. Felt more like a hotel. First of all the room is very zen like and modern. I stayed here 5 nights and it was very comfortable. My first day I called and asked if I could could check in early because I wasn't feeling well. They let me check in two hours early, no problem. Very accommodating!!! Also... the pillows are amazing lol. Two very long pillows also. It was like I was at home at with my body pillow :) my room had a bath tub which I used every night for a bubble bath. Rooms look like they have been updated very recently. The management was was so nice. I will be staying here every time I come to San Francisco. By the way, I travel for a living and stay in hotels 50% of the time. This was one of my favorites! read more

Nice inside, all rooms been renovated with quality products too bad they allow smoking right outside the rooms. Ash trays on each pole outside each room. Smoke comes pouring in air conditioners. Ruined the renovation. Everything smells of smoke. Stayed here for 3 nights. Everything in my luggage smelled of cigarette smoke. Suggestion to owners. Remove all ash trays and designate a smoking area away from rooms. Over 80% of people in CA don't smoke. You ruined your renovation. I'm having to stay in this general area 2 - 3 days a month for the next year. Not staying here any longer. read more
