Like Uniqlo, MUJI is inspired by the Japanese so you know it's a fun store to check out. It's compact but there is a lot to see in terms of interesting design and on top of all of that they have awesome pens. I spent a lot of time just testing each of their pens from the thickness of the ink to different colors. They even have the pens that have multiple colors that you click to change or the pen/pencil combo that is one click from being a pen or pencil depending on what you need it to be. Came here to grab something quick before we head to dinner. l childishly thought all Mujis in Manhattan are the same but no, this one doesn't feel like a Muji at all. I definitely prefer the one at Cooper Square. First of all, the address is a bit confusing and the shop is hidden behind the Dean and Deluca. When I walked in, the store was really messy. It's as if a storm came through. I guess they were in the middle of changing their products on the shelves, thus there's boxes everywhere. But don't shops usually do that after they close for the day so that they won't disturb their customers? I couldn't find anything I came looking for other than a bowl. I know for sure they have refills for the hexagonal click pen. However, all they had were refills in orange. They don't even sell this pen here in normal colours. I was trying to find another pen and their selections are so limited. Found a cap gel pen but doesn't have the tip size I want. They have refills for this pen but not the same tip size as the pens they sold. What?! What's going on here. Overall, not a very pleasant experience. Staff was not helpful. read more

The checkout experience is very bad. The cashier asked if I need a bag for it which cost $0.05 for it and I said no thanks but can you wrap it for me with paper because it's underwear and I don't want to show people what I bought in the street. The cashier said the paper is for ceramic only and she repeated that twice. And then she asked impatiently do you need a bag or no? I have to say yes to avoid people seeing my underwear. The whole point of charging people is to minimize the usage of plastic. As a store, you need to come up with a solution for this kind of situation. This was my first time inside a real Muji as the only one I been to was inside JFK. This Muji is nice, the workers were just minding their business, and the items they sold were intriguing. I only intended to gawk but since there were cheap items I decided to purchase. I snagged a shirt for $12, a cupcake or muffin I think for $3, and a photo card holder for $3. Therefore, I can brag that I purchased at Muji! I was surprised that they sold food at Muji, too. Besides the cupcake or muffin I almost purchased another small cake but decided against it. They have these awesome Muji diffusers that I've always wanted but since I was traveling light I decided to just opt for the Amazon knockoffs. They have all these fragrances for sale as well. It was the dog days of summer. Hot garbage, dog shit baked into the sidewalk. No A/C on the platform or the A-train. The city was a furnace in which your will to live was being tempered. And tested. Stepping inside Muji was like entering an oasis. The spacious store was clean, cool, and very, very calming --everything the city was not. There was gentle ambient music and plumes of aromatherapeutic fog. It was my first time there and I took my time perusing the aisles, enchanted by all the neat little utilitarian things on display, my hands clasped loosely behind my back like a Ching dynasty poet walking through royal gardens. Suddenly, through a shelf of transparent travel toiletries, I espy a large man with a baby face making a series of contorted facial expressions and loud sounds. I shrug it off. Ain't nobody got time for sexual deviants in a place like Muji. Shortly thereafter, I hear a loud THUD followed by a modest gasp. "What happened?," someone asks, but in a whisper. I glide towards the source of the THUD to find out. The man I saw making faces and sounds is now lying still on the ground. A girl, who seems to know him, is backing away from the body very, very slowly, her hands up as if to protest her innocence. She would make a terrible murderer. The girl briefly disappears then returns with an authoritative-looking white male, presumably an employee. He follows her to the fallen body. When he sees it though, he shakes his head, mutters something under his breath, and splits. Oh oops. He's not an employee after all. By this time a ring of people have gathered around the fallen body. Some, customers, some, employees. But all of us calm, languid, as if in a dream. As if we are moving to the beat of the new-age soundtrack playing overhead. A kind of dance in which everyone remains demure and mostly still. I lock eyes with the girl. We make intense dream-state eye contact, but no other movements. "Should I call 9-1-1?" I assume she asked me this but it's just as likely that we were reading each other's minds by this point. A small part of my brain flickers alive for a second. "Yes!" I say with all the urgency I can muster in my dream-like trance. The girl comes over to me and dials 9-1-1. But when her call goes through, instead of speaking to the operator, she just keeps looking at me. "A man has fainted," I prompt her. "A man has fainted," she says into her phone. "We are in a store called Muji." "We are in a store called Muji." "At 40th St. and 8th Ave..." And like this, I feed her the information one line at a time. Why didn't I just grab the phone from her and speak directly to the operator? No idea. With the ambulance on its way, the store employees finally stir into action, but it is a peculiar kind of action. They leave en masse and return with handfuls of paper towels, which they hold a-flutter while scurrying silently around the fallen body. It is a mystical sight to behold. "He needs to be on his side," the girl says weakly to one of the employees. He shrugs, giggles, then floats away. "Okay," I sigh (because I am a lazy bastard), "do you want to flip him to his side with me?" The guy was huge, over 6' and 200 pounds at least. To my surprise, the girl smiles selfishly --you know what I mean, that smile that we give when we are being selfish and we know it-- and says, "I don't want to touch him." "What?" The sound of an ambulance approaching. "I don't want to touch him." She's still smiling and for some reason I smile back at her even though she is clearly a murderer. Paramedics burst onto the scene, and like magic the guy wakes up. He seems okay. He says his name is Joe. A medic asks the girl if Joe had taken a substance whose name I could not catch over the din of rescue. She nods yes. The medic doesn't seem to be too worried. "You look flushed," he says to the girl. She nods. They make intense Muji dream-state eye contact. I slide away silently like a business card over lacquer. read more

After an incident in which a blue pen I had borrowed stubbornly decided to die on me and I was left to write a note with the last couple of words horribly, messily, angrily scratched and etched into the paper, I VOWED to carry a working pen with me at all times. I then overcompensated and had too many pens, markers, and pencils rolling around my bag. Then, when I was trying to find the perfect one, I had to spend approximately fifteen seconds (which is a lot!) looking for it in the recesses of my bag. "I have a Sharpie!" I once announced to a woman at the post office. Fifteen seconds later (see, it's a lot!), I produced a Sharpie and a beet red face. I came to Muji recently to buy a pen(cil) case and once again was amazed with this store. The case was the perfect size - small enough to fit in a purse, but big enough to hold my collection - and I even added to my collection because the pens here were so affordable! The 0.38mm gel pens, in particular, are $1.50 each and add just enough color without bleeding through the pages. They also dry so quickly. The stationery station at this particular Muji is a bit smaller than the others, but still does the job. I eyed a flip book scheduler that looked really useful. Muji also has housewares and clothing. Oh, and J introduced me to the chocolate peanuts, a snack that could easily be made at home, but are too good to pass up when conveniently packaged and placed near the registers. I was there today with my friend. I ended up only buying a white tee shirt, but it fits well and the materials are high quality. I would have loved to buy a black cardigan, but it wasn't available in my size. Besides clothes, the housewares, furniture and diffusers are all quality products. I was surprised to find Muji in NYC. Commonplace in Japan, they are a general post-modern department store. In Japan, they are typically 7500+ square feet, where as this one is around 2500, and the SoHo location is even smaller. As such, they've limited the clothing selection severely, choosing to stock mostly home goods. I picked up some linens, interesting double-walled beer glasses, and a t-shirt. Analogies to American chains don't really apply. In Japan, the traditional department store still commands lots of business and prestige--far more elaborate than American counterparts with food markets on the lower levels, restaurants on top, and many levels of shopping. The only American dept. store than is close to Japanese ones such as say, Sogo, Mitsukoshi, Daimaryu-- is the grand Bloomingdales. Muji is really a low-cost alternative to these stores, and they are pretty much eating their lunch. Everyone looks good for less these days in Japan. (But you can really thank China.) The design sensibility is tasteful and not exaggerated like Crate & Barrel or IKEA. While it is cheap in Japan, it's not here. It's the same stuff as Japan's stores, even the price tags are the same, prices printed in ¥, so we pay for extra shipping and taxes. With this and Uniqlo in SoHo, you can get a feel of how globalization has affected Japan, and NYC. If you think Takashimaya was left out of this review, doesn't apply, the NYC outpost is a long-running experiment, totally unlike the Japanese ones. read more

As a writer and beauty junky, I was so psyched to check out Muji. Unfortunately my experience ended in being accused of shoplifting. The security guard stopped me at the door and asked me to present the receipt for my $1.50 notebook. The reason? I picked up said notebook and he didn't see me put it back down. That is, I believe, what the French call "shopping". Mind you, I walked to the register (he must not have been watching me THAT closely), bought it, and put it in my canvas bag. When I questioned whether he asked everyone to show a receipt, he said yes. I called bullsh*t (in my head), waited a few minutes, and saw him do the same thing to a couple as I stood there; he did not do so again. I returned the notebook explaining my profiling experience with the guard (ironically, a self-professed "Muslim who doesn't see color", but told me about the negative perceptions of Black people). Yes, it was only a $1.50 purchase, but my beauty spending packs quite the punch when I'm treated as a valued customer versus a criminal. read more

There are a few Muji locations sprinkled around Manhattan, but this particular Muji is one of the bigger locations, with wall to wall windows that give a peek into the interior. Muji is basically a store of modern-day Japanese products ranging from clothes, bags, accessories, stationary, notebooks, storage solutions, etc. There's only one reason I come to Muji though, and it's for their stationary and design supplies. While prices tend to be steep, the quality is oftentimes reflected in the price. I can't determine outright the quality of the clothes or the miscellaneous household products as I've never purchased those before. They do look very appealing, and I've had the urge more than a few times to just splurge and buy totally unnecessary items. I can say for certain though that their notebooks and related stationary items are all great for either personal and/or office use. If you are a sucker for minimalism, clean design, and contemporary/modern style, then you'd be interested in what they sell at Muji. The Muji stationary is especially outstanding. They have a collection of notebooks and sketchbooks that come in a variety of sizes. The notebooks come in mini sizes, leather bound covers, lined, unlined, spiral, oversized, etc. The pencils and pens also come in a number of colors and pen nib/pencil lead sizes. I recently purchased a mini unlined notebook, perfect for toting around for making small notes and doodling on the go. The mechanical pencils are beyond perfect for sketching and drafting because of the different lead sizes. The pencils and pens tend to be pricy though, around $5-$10, but I feel they are worth the expenditure every once in awhile. One drawback; their staff. Every time I've walked in here, the customer service hasn't always been very welcoming or warm. Nonetheless, a minor blemish that can be overlooked since most of your time here will be spent browsing anyway. read more

I guess I could have spent hours in a Muji store without getting bored - tons of things that I either consider to buy, or already bought it at home. Loved the way they decorate the store, such a relaxing feeling. Muji probably is a perfect place for small little container type of stuff - they have those in as many customization as you could literally think of. I have got a small carry-on bottle for flight purpose for instance. Apart from that, Muji is also famous for the lamp light aroma diffuser. Love everything about this store. Such a great range of innovative practical items with the most appealing understated aesthetic. I got a great sm. purse for $15 on sale in this very interesting rough weave waterproof fabric. It can be used 3 different ways with also a detachable strap. I use it when I walk my dog, but it even could look smart as an evening clutch! Neat porcelain tiny donut shaped individual toothbrush holders for you counter, so easy to clean and takes up no space in simple colors, yummy Japanese styled Vanilla wafers that were I think $1.25! It's like Japanese IKEA, full of goods that balance being generic and being stylish, from notebooks and pens to kitchenware to slippers to suitcases. I came in here looking for a notebook and a pen, and left with multiples of both, plus a pair of boxers and a bag of Taiwanese oolong. I don't know how that happened exactly, except to say that Muji's stuff is often subtly but powerfully appealing. So there I was, running down 8th Ave. trying to get to the Majestic Theater in somewhat of a light sprint in 4-inch heels. 12 minutes until showtime.. I absolutely adore the Muji stores in Japan and Taiwan. They are sprinkled everywhere in Taipei: in train station terminals, subway stops, and on busy street corners on your walk home. The beige and tan ocean of organizational products, stationary, kitchen wares, bedding, and bath products lure me in every time. Like those gorgeous mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean. Where was I? I am a very huge fan of Muji. Muji in Japan that is. And that gets 5 Stars. But the ones in NYC and I can say the same about the ones I visited in Europe, somehow loses its original charm of the Japanese version. So this 3 stars apply to Muji stores abroad in general, not just this specific store. First of all, I can only find 5% of what is sold in Muji in Japan. What bothers me the most is lack of clothing selection... I am in my third trimester and there are no maternity clothes at all in US stores, so I'd have to order from Muji Japan if I want them, same goes for baby/kids clothes. Muji in Japan also has a whole supermarket food section, which I imagine would be hard to sell abroad, due to food regulations etc. So I understand. But clothes??? And, and my favorite aroma diffuser that doubles as a night light, does not exist here. Second of all, the price. The whole point of Muji is it's MUJI (mujirushi ryouhin, which means no mark/brand, good quality) which means it's supposed to be affordable and quality. Somehow with $ exchange or import tax or whatever the reason, the price is not as cheap as in Japan, which takes away from the charm of Muji all together. If I didn't know the original Muji, I might be giving this place a higher rating, but since I know the Mega-store in Yuurakucho in Tokyo among other Muji stores in Japan, it's hard not to compare and be disappointed. So the ones abroad seem like a convenience store version in comparison. I do some shopping like kitchen goods in NYC ones, but I'm doing the most of my Muji shopping spree in Japan. read more

I love you but why must you be so cruel to me?? I've been a dedicated Muji shopper for quite awhile now. First from their MoMa outposts and then when they evolved into stand-alone stores and I've been in their Spain shops. I saw another post about their customer service and I have to wholeheartedly agree. At this Muji, the customer is pegged as wrong. I bought about $400 worth of goods during a shopping trip. A bunch of stationery and containers, different receipts, crazy money. I found out later that I purchased the wrong type of pen, so I decided to return two $1.75 pens. When I bought the pens, the cashier had stuck them in a separate paper bag and taped it shut, so it would not rub against my other purchases. I was told that I could not return it because it did not have a sticker on it. I hadn't even opened the little package wrapper that the original cashier packed the pens in. Which means, the original cashier sold me a pen without a sticker on it. This cashier, Andrew, was extremely rude and told me right away that this was a transaction that was not going to happen, even after I told him that I had bought it that way. I became upset and asked to speak to the manager. All for a $1.75 pen. Seriously?? I have to use the manager's time for this??? He went to go look for a manager and came back in 3 minutes. He said that he would return it this time because the manager was not here. I seemed to recall from one month back, I was in the Chelsea store looking for bottles that were sold out. The nice Chelsea customer service folks called up this Times Square store and they told me that they had 7 of them. So I took a cab up to Times Square and when I got there, they told me they only had 1 and that they had misinformed Chelsea. So then they told me that I should call the other store. I had to remind them that they should probably help call another store. I wasted 45 minutes going to Times Square based on false information. I like the stuff but this location has really bad customer service here. read more

If you like the simple style of moleskine, you might like muji notebooks- at a normal price. After using muji notebooks, other notebooks seem so cluttered. These notebooks are just craft board and a taped spine. Their newsprint pads are good for sketching ideas and writing unstructured notes. Moleskine notebooks are a bit "too nice." Muji notebooks are not so high quality that I felt it was a pity to use them. The cover is not so thick as Moleskine, for example. But it is sufficient. It's an everyday basic notebook that you will actually use. I also like the lower page count. In addition, they have clothes and organizational products. read more

This is truly an amazing place to get really good, high quality stationary. I don't shop much at Muji, but when I go, I go straight to the pen and stationary station that meets you in the front of the store. The fine tipped pens, which are available in an abundance of colors and sizes, are my Achilles heel. They are so beautiful and bountiful that I cannot help but to "stock up" on items that are more of a fun luxury than a necessity. Ikea and Target had a drunken one-night-stand after closing-time one off night. They had a kid with expensive taste. Her name was Muji. All the natural fibers and good graphic design in the world can't cover-up the overpriced sweatshop crapola on the shelves. Still, there's hope...out back. Go. Gooo! Go to the back of the store; through the carefully packaged speakers and ladies' garments. Go all the way through the back door and into...the secret garden! The moss-hilled landscape is punctuated with fully-grown birch trees and playful pools of river pebbles. Four stars when there is a 50% sale (a wk before Xmas)! Everything looks twice as good when it is 50% off. There were still enough size small clothing left when I was there for sweaters and jackets. (Bought a jacket for $75, sweaters $20.) Checked menswear again but still looks too slim. Size large is more like a medium and there is no XL. I left with a great bargain. As I set on my way back to Penn Station I attempted, as always, to avoid the streets closest to Times Square as much as possible. A twist of fate (or just me not paying close enough attention) brought me to Muji. Muji. It just sounds all sorts of fun and great. Although I didn't feel like stopping in to do any more shopping (I had already done some damage) I couldn't resist. From the window I saw a layout of clothing and household items...these are a few of my favorite things. When I walked in it was like the store wants you to forget that it's located in the madness of Times Square (despite the entirely window-covered storefront). It was clean! organized! not crowded! ...all things to get excited about I must say. I only had time to browse quickly and had to talk myself out of buying anything (after all, I had to catch a train) but ooh it was so hard. The wrinkled t-shirts kept calling my name, I swear. The quality of everything there was also surprising. Although the prices are a tiny bit higher than you'd like, most of the stuff there seems more than worth it...even if it's just for the novelty. Some of their house products are things you'd never think of and then once you see it you wonder how you lived without it! Wow, Muji might just be my new favorite brand. I was originally sent there to score some of their famous recycled socks for my family members... apparently they are amazing and have been featured on GQ or whatever. So I was just grabbing a bunch of the striped socks ($17.50 for a 5-pack) when I noticed their stockings were really solid and high quality... and so were the gloves and scarves nearby... and the cardigans and pea coats and canvas bags too!! Love. Basically, Muji carries basic styles that are simple yet great quality (kind of like a more neutral, conservative version of American Apparel). They also carry a bunch of random stuff besides clothing, like pens, dishes, puzzles, bed spreads, and containers. The store is spacious and the employees are scattered about and kind of like wallflowers. Doesn't bother me. I'm definitely going to start getting my closet staples and basics from here. read more

I hazily remember actually seeing something like this store back in Japan---well, I'm happy they're here in NYC. In addition to giving me d opportunity to practice using my already-rusty skills in reading in Katakana/Hiragana/Kanji characters as displayed on its many merchandise, this store gives me ideas on what's actually very ordinary but greatly used by most people in Japan. they have all those typical items that are very useful, too, for a city like NYC where most people live in cramped spaces. i like buying some personal items here including cotton balls, glasses, ballpens, erasers, writing pads, small kitchen stuff, scissors---they all look well designed, cute and fantastic. i'll always be back every chance i've got.... yes, i agree--most staff members r not friendly. they tend to measure you down whether ur a buying or a non-buying customer ---how do i know? well, i've been buying practically for 30 years for my own needs such that i've been exposed to all kinds of shopkeepers in many places in the world LOL. read more

Muji: one of my favourite place to get stationery and home ware. Very well organize and easy to shop. Typical Japanese store: clean and neat. Don't expect any service there unless you have questions on their products. I don't get their clothing very often, but their leggings and docks are very well made. . read more

I was very disappointed that the item I got as a gift in the wrong size I couldn't exchange for the SAME item there as apparently in giant INVISIBLE letters its says in Japanese all sales are final and there are no exchanges. Must be lost in translation somewhere. . . thanks! I can now safely wander by knowing that customer service is secondary here. read more

Muji why do you make me want to buy all of the things?! I'm a fan of Muji's design and simple elegance. Plus they think of everything and make it look so neat and tidy that I'm drooling over an ordinary brown hand towel. The thing is, it's stuff that I'd buy if it were actually cheap, and maybe it is in Japan, but here it's not. And the whole shopping experience isn't wonderful, since customer service is nonexistent and the store has this forbidding tightness about it (though that's probably the fault of the layout). I might have to try the other locations because right now I'm not feeling the Muji love. read more

Location was difficult to find however since being a fan of Muji for many years when I lived in London, finally having the store come to North America has been a huge bonus. Nicely laid out, all the usual items, however I was disappointed that they don't stock the toiletries and food like the UK and Japan stores. The staff weren't helpful at all. Tended to have the opinion that because they work in a Muji store they can be as rude as they want. read more
