I come here all the time whenever I need to replenish my stationary. They have a vast assortment of pens and notebooks, all of which come in different sizes and points. The ink does not bleed however the it doesn't last as long. The prices are very affordable and wallet-friendly which is nice compared to other products like Moleskine etc. Not only do they sell stationary, they also offer a nice catalog of clothing for men and woman as well as household appliances such as towels, robes, humidifiers, bed sheets and many more. The overall shopping experience is very enjoyable here. The interior is very elegant and trendy which is very enjoyable for me because I'm a fan of Japanese products and style. This place is amazing! They have so many weird little Japanese trinket things that I love to play with. Much of it seems geared towards tourists, like little NY cityscape blocks and transit maps printed on handkerchiefs, but I am a tourist so whatever. The clothing selection is limited, but that isn't the best part about this place. The best part is the wall o travel accessories, with little bottles that you never thought you needed and disposable straight razors for LADIES! I'm not even sure how to use a straight razor but I wanted to get one. TSA probably would have taken it away from me though, bastards. All in all, it's kitchy, fun, IKEA-esque. I like. read more

I buy something from here at least once a week these days. One of the main things I love about this place is how calming I feel inside- I'll admit that this place can run out of its popular items fast, leaving the rest of the stock almost untouched. They have some small sales every now and then, so if you time your purchase right you can get a few % off. They had these strawberry creme marshmallows for maybe a day before they sold out- definitely more limited edition than I expected. The Japanese outpost has taken Manhattan by storm and opened up several locations. The biggest of them being the Hell's Kitchen/Time Square Store. Offering Cosmetics, Stationary, Clothing, Home Goods, and Linens in the New York Times Building with glass walls and hardwood floors is a true shopping experience. The staff is very low key...almost to the point of not helpful, but the good thing is that they don't bother you and you really can explore the store on your own and not be disturbed with constant hounding.... Muji offers a lot of interesting items that are unique to the US and offer them at decent prices. read more

Again, maybe I'm just a downtown kinda guy, but I prefer the Muji store in SoHo to this one. Today, I picked up 2 plastic drawers to organize the power cords to my electronic "stuff". I had to ask for help from the clerk, without being approached, and there was no on behind the register when I checked out. No big deal, really. Not a long line. No one was rude or anything, just small things that set my more fave store on Broadway, Downtown, apart from this one. All in all both stores have the same selection of items. I think this store is a lot better than the one in SoHo, mostly for its location in Renzo Piano's New York Times Building, which is one of the best structures in town and home to the Gray Lady. I don't like the sort of people that are in this neighborhood on the weekend but they don't tend to come into the store much and it's less crowded than the one downtown. Walking back to the hotel one night by the NY Times building, Muji's BIG and well lit sign on the storefront caught my attention, so I decided to venture in to take a peek. Ikea...you've got some serious competition now! The first thing that struck my mind...how clean and well organized this store is. Very well laid out, and everything seemed to be in its right place. After perusing a bit through the store, I was very fascinated by the diversity of the items that were obviously imported from Japan. Anything from organizing items, to kitchenware, to diningware, to clothing and furniture...It all seemed reasonably priced, except for the furniture, but then again, that was the only thing I was not too interested in. I absolutely love Muji. This review is for the location, however. The store itself is quite "intimate" - AKA cramped. However, I can usually find items here that they don't even stock at the Soho location. I cannot find the best word to describe the staff - Indifferent? Apathetic? It was as if I knew more about Muji than they did. All I did was go to the website first to narrow down what I wanted to buy and they couldn't help me locate it nor did they offer to look it up in their system to see if they or another store stocks the item. Sigh, I love Muji, just not this location. It's definitely not as homey as the one in SoHo. That one being my fave. This one is really stark but in a bad way, like a hospital kind of way. I think it's because of the clear bookshelf-like displays and the windows everywhere. There's also a lot of stuff here so it's super packed. I know it's NYC and real-estate is hard to come by but I'd also like to not feel like I'm about to bump into stuff and have it all fall on the floor. It's also pretty much a one-way street in here, as in, only one person should probably walk in between the displays so no one will knock over a display. That said, I come here for their stationery. I love their multi-colored super thin tipped pens and their thin notebooks. It's a little taste of Asia for me since I would always get skinny pens there. It's super difficult to find those 0.28mm and 0.38mm pens in America. Their pens make me happy and I definitely pay the price for it! :) read more

Good customer service, cool products that have style, unlike the crap at the .99 cent stores. It's worth looking like you have some style than looking like you have a mixed bag of stuff that looks cheap, then breaks. Trust me, I love the Family Dollar stores. The suit and jacket hangers here are excellent. They drape my suit jackets really well and are long enough on the shoulders to avoid pinching from short wire hangers. I LOVE the Muji brand. I've visited many other Muji stores in Japan. This store in NYC is a scaled back version of the stores in Japan. The selection is much smaller than in Japan. I found some items to be a bit pricey but there are some nice finds. If you need to get a bit organized or need some simple stationary products this is the place for you. If you need to send out some letters or postcards, consider buying the itmes at the store and use their cute stamps to personalize and write your correspondance right in the store. The stamps are adorable and then you can head straight to mail your items from the store. read more

I love the Muji aesthetic: everything looks so simple and yet so amazing. Their stationery (notebooks, pencils) is just the best. I noticed many reviewers bitching about the customer service at this location, which is strange to me because I had a wonderful experience. Yelp hours are WRONG by the way: they don't open until 11. Not knowing that, I was excitingly pulling on the door at 9:01 to get a quick shop in before my flight back to LA. After a pleading, pathetic conversation through the glass, the clerk actually let me in and let me shop 2 hours before the store was supposed to open. Like I said, I love the notebooks and other paper goods but I'm definitely not a top customer, so I really appreciated the kindness. Ikea meet Muji, Muji meet Ikea. Muji reminds me of a Japanese version of Ikea except they also sell clothing. They have that Japanese minimalist style. Simple but functional products that also have a nice look. The first thing that hits you when you walk into the store is the aroma diffusers. They spit out or steam out all types of citrusy and floral scents. Can be overwhelming if you don't like this stuff but I actually got accustomed to it and bought a small diffuser recently. The scents must have an addictive ingredient. They sell large and small ones. The small one is sufficient enough for most size rooms. This time I came in for oils for the diffuser. I bought 2 since they had a 20% off sale. They should last several months. This store tends to have 20% off sales every so often on various items. Overall its an interesting store and fun to look around. If you like pens, notebooks and stamps they have it here and you could test them out before you buy it. All we need is a Japanese cafeteria with Mochi meatballs and it would be just like Ikea. read more

Fun visit to a mini-department store carrying Japanese housewares (sized for NY or Tokyo apartments), basic clothing, some cute stationary and wooden desktoy models of major cities in the world. I come by frequently for a sweater or a tshirt, maybe a bathmat or some stackable containers - once, a pair of earmuffs. I give 1 star for the beautiful aesthetic layout of the store, I like how fluid it is and clean. Another star for the selection of housewares and clothing at this location, not many others are this large and has quite the selection. Another star for the aromatherapy machines and the availability of stationery and office supplies. What I did not care for was the staff service and availability of help, which was non-existent, only one person greeted me, everyone was around the register chatting or on a task. Although its a beautiful store, its hard to navigate with the crowds of people (I am guessing since its near Times SQ, which is tourist central that could explain why). Their Zen design simplicity and utility have made their kitchen, bath, and general household implements very attractive for me. I have one of practically everything they offer in their stores. Nothing from Japan is cheap these days, so things are a bit pricey. And of course in a Japanese store you will encounter no NY- style rudeness. I love Muji. This is my go-to for Japanese pens. It's pretty hard to find 0.3 points in the states, and here they come as small as 0.25 and in a variety of colors! I also love the black q-tips. The shape and color are so much better than the standard ones. read more

Horrible customer service! I was so excited to see a MUJI across the street from our hotel. We got to the store at 8:00 pm. They close at 9:00 pm. After browsing their racks, I was finally ready to try on my finds. This was about 8:40. I asked for a fitting room when a snooty salesperson asked how many items I had. I told her I only had 5. She then informed me that the store closes at 9 pm, and it may be a good idea to try on the clothes over my own clothes. I told her no as we don't have a MUJI back home, and I wouldn't be able to return the items if they didn't fit well. You should've seen her face when another woman stood behind me to wait for a fitting room. She told her the same thing! Thankfully, the woman also refused to accept her suggestion. Listen here, Eva. You could easily just advise your customers of your closing time. We can be courteous and rush to try on our clothes. BUT suggesting to just put the clothes over ours just so you can't go over your scheduled work hours for the day is idiotic. Pls stop doing that. Btw, I was out of your store by 8:55. There are a couple of locations for Muji in Manhattan and they don't carry the same selection. The one near 8th ave in the NYT building next to Dean and Deluca has the best selection of lifestyle products, including mens and women's clothes, accessories, stationary, travel bags, home decor and skin care. The one on 5th sells a lot of plants and home goods, a few random clothing items and a limited selection of the amazing Muji paper products. read more

I'm really surprised that this store is still in business. Since it is located in my office building, I've gone in quite a few times just to poke around and see what they have. I've purchased a few things out of necessity - mostly travel sized containers and some pens. Once, on a rainy day, I purchased an umbrella and when I stepped outside, the damn thing wouldn't open properly. I suppose it was "designed" to be completely opposite of "normal" umbrella construction, but the "design" was just plain stupid and totally non-functional. I went back into the store and demonstrated to the cashier how it wouldn't open, wondering if I picked up a broken one somehow. She just looked at me like I was an idiot, grabbed the umbrella from my hands, tried to show my how it worked and even she couldn't get it open. I went over to the umbrella display, grabbed another one and sure enough, same thing. I told the cashier that I wanted to return it, since it was inherently non-functional and she got really pissy with me. She did eventually process the return, but she was hissing under her breath the entire time. I give this place 2 stars for being nice to look at, but that's about it. The merchandise is mediocre in quality and way too high in price. There's nothing special here that you can't get at the Conatiner Store or IKEA, it's just that MUJI will charge triple what the other stores will. An If I'm going to pay triple for items, I'd at least expect to have the labels translated into English. There are rarely more than 5-10 customers in this place and there are a bunch of sale signs posted all over the windows. I wonder how this place is staying in business? Maybe the SoHo store is more successful. Go in and look around, but don't waste your money on the overpriced items. read more

Buyer beware of the return policy. They will not even do exchanges without a receipt. I got a pair of slippers as a gift for my birthday, which were the wrong size. I tried to exchange them for exactly the same article, just a bigger size and they will not do it without a receipt. I came back with a receipt a week later, and they will not do it because it was over 30 days from the purchase. At Muji's, the customer is always WRONG. Within one year, Muji grew from just one store in SoHo, to having a total of four stores which includes: SoHo, Times Square, 19th Street and JFK JetBlue terminal. Looks to me like New Yorkers are embracing this brand. I, personally, am ecstatic about their growth. Their toiletry items are amazing. I only use their make up remover cotton pads. They are inexpensive and are soft yet tough. Japanese products always catch my attention because it is usually of very high quality. Their attentiveness to details and material always shows. I love Muji. I only wish that they would start selling food items like they do in Asia. (P.S. their stores in Asia sells mango flavored marshmallows. Yum.) read more
