This Yelp posting closes out my business trip that I took last week to Anacortes. It's great to work in a little sightseeing around the business obligations, but it's nonetheless a very small taste of this area's paradise. The drive down Whidbey Island was pleasant, scenic and relaxing. It's definitely a better option than slogging up or down I-5. Unfortunately, visions of heavy center city Seattle traffic (which came to be true even on the weekends) prevented me from really stopping anywhere on the way (except for the Deception Pass Bridge). On a similar trip several years ago, I did manage to work in a Ferry ride to Port Townsend. This Washington State Ferry route is very efficient and was running every half hour. There were no long waits to get on or off and at $6.85, it was a good deal for me and the car. After I was off the ferry, you do have to wind around a bit through Everett to get back to the Highway, but it's manageable. read more

8 dollars and change for a one way ride on the ferry from Mukilteo to Whidbey island. I would say not to waste your time getting out of your car unless you need to use the restroom or get a snack as the ride is about 16 minutes or so. Efficient and takes off every half hour or so. read more

This is a review for all the people who complain they were sent to the back of the line because they cut, who had to wait on the dock because a boat was full and complain about it, and people who say the ferry employees are rude. People say its not their fault they cut the line because they dont know how it works. I'm here to explain things to you, the line begins at the top of the hill in Mukilteo, by the school. Not where you pull out of the Arnies parking lot, or where there is a gap in the line. There is a sign that says in the event of a back up start line here. If, as you approach the school, you see cars in the center lane? The line starts there. Quick tip. If this is the case, drive around through Deception Pass. It will be faster. If there is a line and you cut, even if it is just one or 2 cars, you will be confronted by other drivers until you move to the back of the line. If you manage to make it to the booth the ferry staff, or state trooper will send you ALLLL the way to the back of the line and you have just waisted 2 hours of your life. If there is a gap in the line, it is because there is an intersection or a driveway... that is why the stripes painted on the ground are so people can get out of their driveways and neighborhoods (DONT STOP ON THE DIAGONAL LINES. Again IF YOU CUT YOU WILL BE SENT TO THE BACK OF THE LINE! People are upset because the employees are rude. It is because they have to deal with people who cut lines and dont follow directions. If the booth worker tells you to go to line 18 that is where you go. Even if lanes 1 through 8 are empty. The next boat line would then begin at lane 9 and 10 ( ferry's board 2 lanes at a time). The next 2 lanes will be 11 and 12, then 13 and 14 and so forth. Picking your own lane and not listening to employees is dangerous for people working in the docks and will REALLY piss off employees and riders alike. Plus you just look like a dick. Everyone else has been in the same long ass line as you. You are not special, you dont get to not follow the rules just because you think you can. Now occassionally you will see a car that goes to the very front of the line and they get through. There is a reason for this. They have a medical pass. Speaking as someone who's sister is a breast cancer survivor and parents have been in hospital on more than 1 occasion, they get the pass. How would you like be injected with a shit ton of chemo then sit in a 2 hour long line, in 90 degree heat, while vomit the bones in your toes up you are so nauseous. Now a few fun tips. Leave early or late. Before 1030am and after 830pm the lines die down. If you want Ivars, call ahead. On really long waits if you call when you can see the stop light do so. Keep in mind they are slammed so you may have to try a few times. But, by the time you get you car parked and get to stretch your legs or food is ready and there is no waiting in line. Just shout over everyone I called my order in. Lastly be nice to the ferry workers. If you are going up for Christmas, give them some cookies. Your nice efforts will rub off on them. Oh, and one more thing.. dont set your car alarm, especially on the older boats. The vibration of the engine will set it off and it will wake up the commuter sand old people who are trying to sleep. Plus the captain will make an announcement asking "whoever's owns the BMW with license plate IMADOOSH please go turn of your car alarm?" and everyone will know its you. read more

So I went to Whidbey Island for the first time Sunday so I got to ride a ferry across from the Mukilteo Terminal to the Clinton landing, this is a easy Terminal to get to just take I-5 to exit 182 (hwy 525 west and it ends at the Ferry dock) doesn't get any easier than that well actually it can if you are riding a Motorcycle like me, then you don't have to wait in the line of cars just pull up to the left most ticket booth on the left (on the sidewalk not were the cars are) and they will open the back window and sell you a ticket, then just drive right down in the HOV lane the one with the diamonds on it, Motorcycles get on first after the walk on and you are also first off really friendly people working the ticket booth, the lady was helping a car when I walked up but she opened her windows and told me she would be right with me, I appreciated that I got to ride the Cathlamet http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/your_wsf/our_fleet/index.cfm?vessel_id=1 it is a short ride across but the Cathlamet has WiFi by boingo http://www.boingo.com/ I walked up to the forward deck and enjoyed the ride across, they give you more then enough of a warning of when to return to your vehicle so you can get off I got the a little late they had already started to load cars, so i was the last vehicle on but they always have room for a Motorcycle or two so no worries on not making a ferry, only bad they about being in the back was too many cars get in a hurry and start there engines up too soon so you sitting behind them sucking in exhaust fumes as you wait, people think about the people around you and don't start your vehicle till its time for your row to get off please I want to go back on a nice sunny day and just ride the Island on my Motorcycle read more

Man....it's ALWAYS busy, busy, busy. The nice thing about Mukilteo is whether you are walking or driving there are great places to eat and hang out the second you get off the ferry. Ivar's, Diamond Knot, ice cream, Arnie's, coffee shops, Mukilteo beach (which is nice and big), and tonight a Farmer's Market. So much to do, gorgeous view, just a perfect place to hang out and enjoy the day. Some of the workers in the ticket booths have been not as friendly, but for the most part they are nice. The bomb dogs and officers are really nice. I have to cross to Whidbey once or twice a year for work, but when I do it's a pleasurable experience. read more

A smooth and efficient ride to Whidbey Island. Ferry terminal was clean and the boat was on time. Rates go up in the summer, but I'm sure it's still cheaper then paying for gas and driving all the way around the island. Try to time it so you don't go anytime around 5pm. Very well organized ferry terminal from the waiting lot to loading and unloading onto Whidbey Island. We waited for about 20 minutes before they waved us to start loading. Once onboard, we got out of our car to check out the view from the bow deck. It was a very quick ride. $6 for the sedan and $5 per person to ride. I always pass the waiting cars on my way from and back to the Silver Cloud Inn. Glad I finally got to see what it was all about! :) read more

3.5 stars. Quintessential thing to do when around the Puget Sound. Wish passenger fares were free all of the time, but it is what it is. Coming down Whidbey Island and taking the ferry to Ivars (another PNW classic) is just a great outing any day. I've been taking this ferry as a passenger for several times now and let me tell you. Try it. Link up with a Sound Transit bus (takes you into downtown Seattle in 1:15 w/no traffic). If you have time and can do a little work onboard, $5.25 can get you from Oak Harbor to Westlake Center. The ferry is the best, scenic part though. read more

I rarely use the ferry system unless i'm taking a trip somewhere. In this instance my second visit was to attend the oyster run and twice it's been a pleasant experience with the Whidbey Island/Mukiteo staff. I'm sure it helps that motorcycles get priority on these days, we get our own lane and priority boarding and unloading which is nice. The ferry is always on schedule, very fast and efficient at loading and unloading and the staff on hand always has a smile on their face and helpful with any questions that we have. read more

This might be the worst run ferry service since the beginning of sailing in 3000 bc. The new station is very nice but it's down the road from the old site which was the natural spot. Terrible design has bottle necks and all kinds of issues. The boats are non stop being delayed or cancelled in short the WSF system is bureaucracy at its very worst. It's shitty! read more

I was super impressed with the cleanliness of the Ferry! I guess I was expecting a rusty, dirty boat with some vending machines and grimy chairs. Not the case! The boat was sparkling clean, there was a variety of snacks in the snack bar (as well as vending machines) and ample seating areas for those that wanted to get out of their cars. There was even a communal puzzle on one of the tables. We barely had time to check everything out before we heard the announcement to head back to our cars. Oh, and the signs marking the ferry lane were super appreciated. It was a little worried, being my first time driving onto a ferry, but everything was clearly marked and the announcements made over the loud speaker kept everything flowing well. I should have taken the lead of the locals and hit up Ivar's. Next time for sure! read more

The actual ferry ride was nice and everything involved in the situation was clean and warm inside. It's a quick ride. The downside of the trip was the horribly rude woman that you pay to enter the ferry. It was our first time taking any ferry at all and you would think that considering it's such a touristy thing to do in Seattle that the employees would be more used to us. We saw the right lane that we thought said you should only enter if there was a line for the ferry. There was no line so we just kept driving and then pulled up to the booth to pay. She promptly scolded us saying we were lucky there were no rangers working that day because what we had just done was illegal. She gave us a pamphlet about reporting people who cut in line. THERE WAS NO LINE! We are very sorry, lady. We should not have upset you so much with our friendly attitude and correct change. read more

I haven't been on a ferry for a while, but this is the quickest way to get to almost anywhere on Whidbey Island. The trick for riding the ferries is to go during non-peak hours. The ride is around 20 minutes and costs a bit over 6 bucks! Probably cheaper than using the gas to driver around through Deception Pass and certainly quicker. They can only hold so many cars and this ferry runs every half hour, week days. And since it was early, I only had to wait for a ferry to unload and easily got on, both directions. (Hint: On the weekends it is probably faster to drive around) A new feature since i rode is the ability to pay for both ways up front and then just flash the trip card at the scanner when you get back on the ferry. Well since I am a foodie - and I was hungry, I actually bought one of the "Angus Beef" cheeseburgers. It is almost one step up from a dollar menu cheeseburger at McDonalds, almost! But it costs $3.95 - wait till you get off the ferry and save 3 bucks! read more

I took this ferry from Mukilteo to Whidbey. I only took it one way because I decided to drive North on the island and wrap around back to the "mainland" via Anacortes. The line to get on the ferry on a Saturday morning was quite lengthy. Be sure to get in the right shoulder as soon as you see cars piling up as people will get VERY angry if you cut in line. There are even signs to report you to the authorities if you cut!! Intense! Tourists beware. At busy times, I can easily see you having to wait an hour+ for a ride... Once you get to the ferry, the payment process is quick and there are a lot of staff on hand to direct you to the appropriate lane to wait in and then to drive on board. Cost was for the car plus passenger - didn't have to pay for the driver. After parking on the ferry, you can leave your car and go into the main section of the ferry where you can sit in a booth, go to the refreshment stand (which I was relatively impressed by for a 15-20 minute ferry ride) or go stand outside for some picture-taking. Great views! Ferry was clean and there was janitorial stiff on board during the ferry-ride. No complaints. Travels about every 30 minutes. read more

This ferry terminal is on its last legs and they're currently on schedule to complete the new and seismological sound compared to the old current dock and will allow for better staging of cars before boarding and will offer overhead boarding for passengers through the new terminal when it opens summer of next year! I like how once you get in a queue (if driving), or once you purchased tickets there is the option of ice cream, snacks and beverages from Ivar's next to the actual dock. Boarding can be a little hectic with through traffic using the same roadways as the line boarding the ferry. They're usually on-time but can sometimes be delayed up to an hour, but with every half hour sailings it doesn't matter to them to cancel a sailing or two and just be caught up with the next scheduled sailing. Peak times are 3-7p for driving onboard, wait times can exceed two hours due to a smaller vessel being on the route while one of the regular vessels is going through required maintenance and safety checks. Summer schedule is great too as you have late night, 1a sailings between the two cities and to get to Paine Field for a flight, you just spend $15 on an Uber from the ferry dock pickup/drop off locations. I can say that with a new ferry terminal and dock on the horizon I could see myself getting a five star review! read more

It may sound funny but not all ferry terminal are created equally. I have been around the country and seeing several different facilities and the way that they present themselves with staff and cleanliness. This ferry terminal always has plenty of space, Is kept very clean, and is always running smoothly and on time. There are nearby accommodations such as nice hotels, and a lot of wonderful restaurants, especially diamond knot brewery, which has excellent food. read more

I love ferries!!! :) We came RIGHT ON TIME. We were on a motorcycle, so we got to ride up to the front of the line. We boarded the second we got into the line, which was nice timing on our part. Ha. The lady at the pay station was super friendly! They usually are in my experiences... I've never come during peak times and had to wait in a long ferry line (knock on wood), so no issues here. The trip from Mukilteo to Clinton is pretty quick. Enough to get up on deck and hang out for a bit, don't take a nap ;) I've sailed out of Mukilteo a couple times, so problems. Glad I wasn't driving cause there are a couple of lanes when you approach the pay stations that look confusing. read more

Don't accidentally get in the wrong lane here! We got in the wrong lane as we were told a lane # went to that lane. It could have been we were told the wrong lane # or we misheard the person at the booth. Whichever it was, we had a crappy experience. All the lanes loaded onto the boat and ours did not move. Quick way to get from Mukilteo to Whidbey Island. The whole trip takes around $15 and it's an inexpensive option! I love getting out of my car and going to the front of the ferry, beautiful view and great feeling of being on top of the water. Workers were super efficient - even when people forgot to get to their cars the staff helped people get around them. The line was long (about 2 hr wait) but we were across the water in 90 minutes. The line kept continuously rolling the entire time. Only downside were the religious believers screaming their faith at you while you're held hostage. read more

I have been taking the Mukilteo ferry for years.The crossing is about 20 minutes from Mukilteo to Langley. The ticket system is without difficulty. I guess if you want stress less travel then be on the road before 7 am and on the ferry by 8 am. The ferry line and the traffic around it is horriffic on any holiday weekend, regular week end and between hours 8 to 11 am and 2 to 6 pm most weed days. If you don't like dealing w lines then I would suggest driving around. It's a lot of freeway, but once you get to the mountainous roads and the National park, it's time to pull out the camera. The ferries themselves are in good condition, provide a lot of different seating options and have decent sized snack bar. Try to avoid traveling during peak hours and if you can't avoid it, bring a book or something to do to pass the 1-2 hours that you might have to wait. I don't really like taking the ferries because of the waiting but the ferry themselves are great. read more

My sister and I have always carpooled to the island in one car and there is no place to park and pay to be able to do this. Clinton/Mukilteo Ferry Regarding Cyclists.. First...I Love The Ferries.... I really wish the Staff of the Ferries could Stay On Message about what they would like cyclists to do & not do. In particular it's irritating that some staff want you to walk your bike off till a certain point before you remount & ride.....& then on the next ferry ride they will let everybody ride right off the ramp. It would be helpful if maybe you clowns posted the rules or something instead of making them up as you go......& Suzie the Ferry Employee work on your customer service skills, you change the rules sporadically & it's hard to keep up with you. .. read more
