Absolutely the worst! I got spring rolls with nothing in them. It was as flat as a stack of four playing cards just only fried spring roll skins that had nothing inside. Nothing. Like nothing nothing.....100% no exaggeration.... I don't even like telling anyone about this because it's so unbelievable that I feel like nobody will believe me. We said we didn't like the spring rolls and we wanted the egg rolls and the server said that the egg rolls are prepared the same way, to which I replied "oh with nothing in them?" And he just walked away. I can't emphasise enough on the fact that I was served empty fried spring roll shells. No cabbage. No onion. No carrots. No celery. I am not playing around with you folks. Nothing inside.... Nothing. The cashew chicken was only boiled chips of chicken and boiled frozen vegetable medley from the food bank with corn starch thickened water and a few cashews on top. I ate here with my pally a couple days ago. Part of my order was fried shrimp. I noticed they had not deveined the shrimp so I didn't eat it. The black line when it isn't deveined is in essence "poop", the digestive tract of the shrimp. It is edible though it may add a gritty texture and/or a bitter taste. If you eat it, you are eating what the shrimp already ate. It simply does NOT appeal to me to eat it. I figure some slappos don't care and just eat it. When I paid the bill I asked the server if that was normally how shrimp was served here. The server seems to be a good joe. He claims he has no clue whether or not shrimp is usually fixed that way. He suggested I should just not order any shrimp dish again if I don't like it that way. But this made me wonder what other practices this kitchen prepares food under. I won't order shrimp again at Mulan Garden cause I won't eat there again. It doesn't make any sense to me they don't devein the shrimp they serve. I think it's disgusting. I cannot recall the last time I was served shrimp that had not been deveined. I don't think "good " restaurants serve shrimp that has not had it's digestive tract removed. read more

The food was really good I had the lunch special orange chicken. The waiter was great.

We ordered the dinner combination where we selected the crab puff, pork fried rice and Mongolian beef and the house special low mein. Portions are generous, the low mein had good flavor with good amount of shrimp, beef and pork. The combo was your standard American Chinese dish and tasted good. In my experience, the food had much better flavor than golden crown where I've ordered similar items. I'd choose Mulan Garden over Golden Crown if I were looking for Chinese in the area. This restaurant also was cleaner and the chefs could cook you authentic Chinese dishes if you asked. read more

My daughter and I stopped into this restaurant for lunch and had a less than desirable experience. The host was fine to start with and was polite and pleasant as we were seated. we ordered a couple lunch combinations consisting of dishes that we regularly order at every chinese restaurant we dine at (which is pretty frequent). My daughter ordered egg foo yung, her go to. The dish that was served was only slightly reminiscent of any version of egg foo yung I've ever seen before in my life. The sauce was a bright yellow color and super thin and lumpy at the same time. She tried it anyway and immediately declined the dish. I tried it as well and can attest that it was awful. The server came to ask how everything was and I told them that the dish was not passible for us and that we would like to exchange it for something more edible. The immediately seemed offended by my answer to their question. They offered some rice or bbq pork in its place which we accepted. The server disappeared to the back and returned a few moments later saying that he was sorry but he had bad news. That "they" had declined to fulfill the substitution offer that he had made to us and that he would remove the dish from the bill instead. He then left the check and walked away. At this point I looked back down at my own plate and noticed two distinct strands of hair that I had previously overlooked. I paid my bill, left a tip and left promptly. I understand that in these times service can be hit or miss. However, I don't agree with the reviews that give this restaurant less than 4-5 stars. We called to place an order to pick up, and right up front they told us it would be quite a wait. We asked if they could call us when it was ready, and they absolutely did! I have never given a 1 star review but this place deserves it. We ordered a variety of dishes and they have absolutely little or no flavor. Kung Pao - No peanuts, no Kung pao flavor. I have never had this dish, even bad ones, that tastes absolutely nothing like Kung pao. Shocking! Boiled veggies in water is what the dish tastes like. Cashew tofu in garlic sauce - there is no garlic flavor. It tastes just like the Kung pao dish - flavorless. Just a bunch of boiled veggies. The fried rice and lo mein were terrible. The owner refused to acknowledge our feedback and said it is just the way it is. She was rude. The only reasonable thing here was the person taking the order on the phone. We just stopped here on our way through town. It exceeded my expectations and is easily the best Chinese restaurant I've ate at in awhile. There were four of us eating and everyone loved their plate. Not only is the food delicious but the portion sizes are huge and the price is low. I ordered a lunch #6 for just under $10. Newly remodeled and under new owners, Mulan Garden has replaced Jimmy Chan's as Main Street's Asian eatery. We arrived just ahead of normal dinner time, at about 4:30pm. As the only customers, we had the run of the place as far as seating goes and next time will ask to be seated away from the window - there was a terrible draft from the poor single panes. I did not have the chance to tour the facility before the remodel, but the after resulted in neat rows of booths, fresh paint, and pleasant decorations. Our hostess/waitress was very attentive and friendly. For a little while she was the only waitress even as other diners began to fill in for dinner and managed the tables and food delivery very well. The spring roll appetizers were small, but hot, crisp, and wonderful with the mustard dipping sauce. I ordered my go-to Kung Pao Chicken (chicken by my mistake, as I have preferred beef for the last couple years). I made sure to ask for Very Spicy and the waitress explained that she could also bring out an additional container of spicy pepper sauce if it was not hot enough. Well, as I have come to expect, it was not very hot and made liberal use of the pepper sauce. With the additional spiciness, it was very good - even if it was chicken. I can't wait to try it with beef. My boyfriend really liked the complimentary hot tea. I enjoyed it as well, but he found it to be exceptional. His order of Mongolian beef was not nearly hot enough for his liking, and when I say he made use of the pepper sauce, I mean he used about half of the little jar. I am glad we didn't get odd stares from the table across the aisle, because it was a sight. Just like my order, once the spicy factor was increase, the beef was mighty tasty and full of perfectly cooked veggies. My family and I were on our way home to Blaine, Washington, from Salt Lake when we decided to stop at Baker City for the night. Hungry for good Chinese food, we stopped at Mulan Garden and are very glad we did. I'm literally eating the food right now and it is hot and fresh, with perfectly cooked veggies and meats and a wonderful hostess/server. The servings are generous and beautifully presented (see picture). I have done a lot of catering and worked in restaurants and am a journeyman level scratch baker, so qualify as a foodie - this place is excellent, clean and a great value. Very dissatisfied. Egg flower soup is ALL celery. My twice cooked pork was red pork and seeds pork. Seriously??? Being the only people eating here should have been our first clue. Server never came back to check on us, so I had to go find him to get a refill on my tea and to ask him to take my lunch off the bill. He never apologized or asked if I wanted something else. I don't like being lied to. I went in to get out of the cold, ordered food and wanted to check my Keno ticket. Their scanner was signed off so I asked if I could check my ticket. He took it from me and asked if I bought the ticket there. I told him that I did not. He said that he could not pay me for it unless I bought it from him. He gave me back the ticket and said that I could check it, but if I won anything, I couldn't cash it in there. I told him that I had never heard that before. He said that it's policy. I asked if that is what the lottery commission told him, and he said "yes, that's what they said". I play Keno a lot (probably too much), and most of the time I buy it in one place and cash it in another. So he lied by saying that it is the commissions policy. It was a long day on the road and my friend from Korea reminded me that we missed lunch and he was hungry. He specifically said he was in the mood for "rice" so we were looking for an Asian restaurant in the Baker City area. We found Mulan Garden on YELP and decided to give it a try. We were greeted by a very friendly woman who was also very polite. The person who waited on us was also polite. She refilled our water several times and even asked if we needed a refill on the pot of tea and quickly returned with more. Everyone here was very pleasant. Before I continue with my review I want to point out that during his month long visit to the US my friend from Korea had always ate everything on his plate, but not this time. As a matter of fact I also usually finish most of my food but I was unable to eat much of my food. I'm going to cut to the chase and say that the both of us, an American and a Korean, felt that most of the food here was substandard in our opinion. Neither of us ate more than a quarter of the food that was placed before us. The small soup appetizer that they served had an odd strong metallic taste to it. The tiny pieces of meat in it reminded me of the processed pieces of chicken you would find in a can of generic chicken noodle soup. After one spoonful, that was enough. We ordered two different dishes and we were going to share the food. We ordered a fried rice dish with chicken and a stir-fry dish with chicken and a side of Char Siu, BBQ Pork. The fried rice was not only bland but there was a too much oil on the bottom of the plate. There was actually only one tiny little piece of carrot in it and we both thought it was probably a mistake. There were no vegetables in it at all. We asked for the stir-fried dish to be made spicy but it arrived with no spice in it at all. I did not see any chili pepper flakes in it and there was very little black pepper in it either. It also was somewhat bland. The vegetables were cooked properly and there was a mix of onion, broccoli, red peppers, green peppers, cabbage and straw mushrooms. As nicely cooked as the vegetables were, the sauce was just tasteless. The BBQ pork was good and we ate all of that. It was served at a perfect temperature and had a pleasant taste and was as good as you would find in many restaurants. We were both very disappointed with most of the meal but the BBQ pork was as good as you would find in most restaurants. As I said, the service was great and everyone was nice, I just wish the food was better. read more

The food was below par and the service just horrible. The hot and sour soup had a strange color and as I write this I am hoping I don't get food poisoning from what I ate. The food came out and their version of general Tao was fried bits of breaded chicken you would find at a cheap buffet with brown sauce poured over the top. Never seen general Tao like this, ever. My wife the. Asks the waitress for hot sauce and she gives us a blank stare and states she is new and does not know if they have hot sauce. Really an Asian restaurant with no hot sauce. After several minutes without an answer about hot sauce my wife asks the hostess. The hostess is as rude as can be and says she is stressed out and we need to tell her what kind of hot sauce we want. To much work I guess to tell us what they have. Not sure what the hostess was stressed out about since there was my family and a couple as the lone patrons in the place. Never had water refilled and never had wait staff check to see if all was ok with us. Never again will I visit that place if I am ever again in baker city. read more

Absolutely below average. Ordered a Kung Pao dish and it was not even close to Kung Pao. The main ingredient was sugar as far as I could tell. I was on vacation and stayed twice in Baker City going and coming. On my trip home I wanted Chinese so bad so I looked on line and it sounded like a good choice. I drove over and got it to go. Got the Dailey special sweet and sour pork, chow mein, ham fried rice and two pot stickers. Sweet and sour was delicious and the sauce, the rest of it was absolutely tasteless I put everything on it sauce wise they gave me and nothing helped. It was the worst Chinese I have had in my life. They were very polite and the food came quickly. I ordered General Tso's. it was pretty awful, fortunately, I was able to scrape off most of the sauce and use some of the sweet and sour sauce that came with my granddaughters meal. The sweet and sour chicken was good. Ordered an eggroll, it was not a typical eggroll. It looked like a fried burrito and the insides were mushy, not very tasty. We also ordered crab puffs which was their version of crab rangoon. They were very good. Maybe because we are from Chicago and my fiancé and his family are Chinese - but, sorry Mulan, it was not good Chinese food. I'm definitely not picky and can usually eat anything without complaint, but for once, i couldn't keep eating because i didn't like it. My fiance and I stopped by here the other night, after waiting about 5 minutes to be seated (we were the only people there) my fiance asked if he could get a beer, the waitress was not very professional and made a sharp snide remark about having to see his ID which was obviously no problem. We are from northern California and are used to used to good Chinese food so we were a little suspect when going to Mulan Garden in Baker City. However, to our very pleasant surprise, the food and service were excellent. AnnIe told us they had opened the restaurant 8 months ago after moving from Portland. They had worked in restaurants in Portland and moved to Baker City to open one of their own. This decision is undoubtedly good for the residents of Baker City or those passing through like us. We had the chicken with string beans and the braised broccoli. Both were terrific and the portions were generous. Mulan Garden is definitely a "go to" place if you are looking for Chinese food in Baker City. read more
