Old school diner feel. We got the chicken and it was SO worth it!! We got a tub to take home. Chicken was juicy and HOT!! Crispy skin. Mashed potatoes were instant which doesn't bother me but may bother others. I LOVE THE NEON YELLOW CHICKEN GRAVY! It takes me back to days of the 1970s. When driving through town some colleagues and I stopped by for a quick bite to eat. We wanted to support a locally owned diner and Mulkey's was the spot to go! We visited around 11AM and they had both their breakfast and lunch menus available. I went with the classic cheeseburger which came with a side of salad or soup and fries. While I did not catch a picture of them, the cheese balls were definitely my favorite ad they were freshly made and tasty! The food wasn't bad. I had the hot roast beef sandwich, which comes topped with mashed potatoes and covered in gravy. The waitress was very attentive, but continually called all four of us "Sweetie." So irritating. The ambiance is poor. It is run down and old. It badly needs updating. I would not go again, and I would not recommend. read more

I don't know what Mulkey's is going to do when the last of the baby boomers die off. Start salting their food, I hope. I've spent about 25 years of my life living within a mile of Mulkey's and decided last week that the time had come to check out this QC institution. I left feeling puzzled about how this business stays open, slinging what is mostly school-cafeteria quality food. I ordered the legendary fried chicken, which was actually the best part of my meal. It came out super crispy and obviously fresh, though the breading was bland. It came with soup; I chose cheddar and broccoli, which tasted canned and also as though no cheese had ever been within five miles of it. My meal also came with a side of mashed potatoes that tasted like -- and I am deadly serious -- water. I would be shocked if any butter or salt at all had made it into the pot they were cooked in. After some reflection, my companion and I decided that Mulkey's caters to medical needs of the elderly customers that seem to make up the bulk of their clientele. Next time I get a hankering for hospital food, though, I'm heading up the road to Trinity. read more

Have you ever made instant mashed potatoes and forgot to put salt or butter in them and they taste like nothing so you put a jar of gravy on it thinking this will add flavor then you go to Aldi or some grocery store and buy chicken strips that look exactly like Tyson or a knockoff and your "henny penny" chicken that you're known for is so greasy you can't tolerate it not to mention looked like it was under a heat lamp for an hour? All at 5 with nobody in the place and charge $28 when the menu gave the indication it would be$23. What happened mulkeys? I hope you close with the rest of them you greedy bastards. read more

I am always a fan of a good, home cooked meal with friendly, attentive waitresses who know how to dress. My husband had and loved the whole fried catfish and I had and loved the Henny Penny fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. The whole meal was priced just right. Both full meals were $10 or under. We would have had piebut there was no room after the lovely meal. I can understand why the business has been there since forever. I've always passed by this place thinking 'creepy box building smelling like fried chicken' and it wasn't creepy inside, but still smelled like fried chicken. Walking in is a blast to the past, old school diner and older patrons hanging out for their meal of the day by the counter. Booths galore, so many we couldn't decide where to sit. Friendly service, recommended the Denver scrambler to my date. I ordered the 2 eggs, hash browns with a biscuit and gravy. Food came out quick and done well; never had biscuits and gravy, but wow yum! They make homemade pies, date says I must try and he also said that their fried chicken is a must try also. If you're looking for some good down home cooking and the kind of service that you probably haven't gotten in 10 years (unless you go to $100/plate restaurants), this is the place for you. Mulkey's is known for their fried chicken and well they should be, it's delicious. Don't skip out on the rest of the menu though either. There are a variety of good things. What you won't find here is a modern atmosphere though. The building was built (I would guess) in the 1960s and the last update was probably in the mid-80s. There aren't TVs, there isn't WIFI, all that you can get here is good food and good service. I think that's a great thing, but some people might not. Just a fair warning before you go in. read more

Some people think Mulkeys is for the older generation. However, it's for everyone. We've been going pretty regularly and the food has yet to disappoint us. Tonight I had the Angus burger, seasoned fries and and salad. Only $8.99. Huge burger and amount of fries! Bun was toasted and very juicy and tasty burger. read more

This place is a legacy. I've only been coming since the early 1980's but my grandfather knew the original Mulkey. I drive 3 hours every year to come here. It's delicious, and it's also a delicious delve into the beautiful past. Good memories, good food. I am impressed it is still in the family. Great place! read more

The chicken and fixings also live up to the billing, they are excellent as light and flaky and perfectly seasoned with plenty of meat.

Ordered a roast beef sandwich and BLT. Menu states comes with fries and soup or salad for $7.99 each.... Seems highly over-priced for what we received. Sandwiches were mediocre at best. I'm sure their fried chicken is wonderful but over priced other wise. read more

Horrible customer service! Went there for breakfast, placed my order and from the booth I was sitting in I could see inside the kitchen. I watched the cook, without using any gloves!!! Crack eggs, then grab a bowl of veggies, and bare handed, grab them from the bowl and smash them onto the grill, then she grabbed the sliced cheese and placed it on something else on the grill as well without washing her hands or wearing gloves!!!i was disgusted and went to the counter to let the waitress know what I saw and to cancel my order and I'll pay for the coffee I drank she huffed at me and rolled her eyes and very rudely slid my card and smacked my receipt on the counter for me to sign!!! The best breakfast in Rock Island and maybe all QCA! Homemade pancakes and great coffee make this a family staple. Friendly, old fashioned diner.
