for a while Phil (Mulloy) had me on speed dial and called whenever he got in a "new" estate piece. my wife's engagement and wedding rings both came from MULLOY's FINE JEWELRY (visible in several profile photos) along with a couple of vintage bracelets and necklaces. my wife's partial to the classics. there was a running joke around our house about how we practiced safe sex. whenever I bought her jewelry expensive enough to keep in the safe, we got to have sex. Mulloy's is not what it used to be! Over the years we have bought many graduation, birthday, anniversary gifts from Mulloy's. Just over two years ago my husband bought me a stacking ruby and diamond ring. I noticed a couple of months ago that one of the rubies and one of the diamonds had popped out. I took it back to Mulloy's to see if they could fix it. The jeweler was very defensive and we were treated like somehow we were negligent regarding the use of this ring. They said it's a very delicate setting and that my husband should've been told. He was not told. The jeweler said that I should've had it checked every six months. We were not told that information upon purchasing. They then proceeded to tell us that they could fix it but it would cost $690. My husband paid about $1000 initially. We were shocked that Mulloy's did not offer any kind of discount or even an apology for the fact that the ring has basically fallen apart after two short years. The jeweler then said that she'd have the owner call us and maybe he could make a better deal for us. He never called. We took it to another jeweler in town, Famulare's (great service there!), they are able to fix the ring for less than half of what Mulloy's wanted to charge. Clearly, Mulloy's has lost its sense of service. read more

Each year during Biketoberfest in Daytona Florida, my husband buys me a jewelry reminder of our trip. I'm a dude. And in being a non-Daddy Warbucks average joe, I am very put out when it comes to shopping for fancy things like jewelery. I had a specific gift in mind when I went foraging for a diamond pendant as a Christmas gift to my wife. A quick search on Google yielded Malloys, and thank goodness, as they made the experience pretty painless. Though their website is designed more for the out-of-town shopper (I couldn't find their hours posted on it anywhere!), the store is very inviting and open in the antique 'district' of Carlsbad Village. I guess since I already had an idea (and a specific price range) of what I wanted, it probably made the experience that much smoother. The salesperson who helped me was very professional and we managed to find the perfect piece that also fit my wallet (though, surprisingly, they tried showing me a few pieces that were on the cheaper side of my budget, which leads me to assume that I shouldn't go shopping for fancy stuff in blue jeans and a t-shirt!) They seemed to have a good selection, with things ranging in the 'I-mowed-lawns-for-the-entire-summer-to-get-this-for-you" gifts to the 'your-great-grandchildren-will-be-paying-for-this-long-after-your-gone' pieces. read more

My husband purchased my engagement ring here and had some trouble with communicating with the staff. I later had the stone come loose in my setting and had called to see if they would be able to fix it, the lady who answered was pretty rude. I wrote a review earlier on Yelp and was contacted pretty promptly by Phil Mulloy, the owner. He called me and spent some time on the phone discussing my issues and ended up refunding me for some of the charges that the miscommunication had accrued. He also sent a nice note and a gift to me for being open to letting him resolve the situation. I give them 5 stars because the ring I got is a hard to find designer and a discontinued item -- Mulloy's had it, and at a great price. Phil was great, we talked a little about how he could improve the customer's experience and he appreciated my feedback. All I can say is great things about this place. I have had wonderful experiences both with purchasing new items and have items repaired. The biggest thing was when I needed to get my husbands wedding ring repaired. He was having a reaction because the ring had a open air design underneath and it was trapping soap and water causing a rash (thanks to Phil for being able to show us this.) So he work with me to have the area filled in solid and most important to me what the engraving I had one the inside done when I had the ring made originally. Not only did they get the ring filled and fixed to no longer cause him to get a rash but they matched in engraving perfectly. The other repair I needed was on my husbands Omega watch it need to be repaired after it was demagnetized going thru airport security... They worked with me and I was given a loyal customer savings on the repair!!! It's things like this that keep me coming back and happy every time I leave the shop. read more

For my birthday my husband gave me the gift of "fixing" my jewelry. My 26 year old wedding ring needed to be resized, the prongs secured, the shape fixed and cleaned. I had a beautiful ring I bought on vacation, but I had lost weight and it needed to be resized. The most exciting project was my 30 year old promised ring - a sapphire and 4 little diamonds. I had an expensive item of gold jewelry to sell. My first stop in Carlsbad Village was Mulloy's. I asked if the gold buyer was in. One of 2 ladies said she could help me. I showed her my item. They both tried to get some sort of machine to work to try to ascertain the gold content. Weren't able to make that happen. Couldn't get the scale to operate. Told me they thought it was too heavy for 14K and was 10 or 12K. Bunch of BS by people who shouldn't be "helping" the public. I won't waste time returning to Mulloy's for any reason. read more

They are neither friendly or nice. I too took my engagement ring in to be sized they said it would be "Really expensive" $400. Apparently that is too much money for their customers. I should of read the yelp reviews before I went in, would of saved me a trip. Then they said they couldn't do it. Save your time and money there is a much better Carlsbad jeweler with a much higher yelp rating. 25 years in business does not equal great service. Came here to upgrade my wife's wedding set for a 10 year anniversary gift. It was strange and we came away feeling blown off and disregarded. Veronica helped us at first and she was quite pleasant and accommodating. We really liked her. Apparently only the owner can do any evaluations..one problem, he was seldom there and wasnt there when they said he should and probably would be. I had asked for an appointment but wasn't spared the time so I began to think they didn't even want my business. I thought they would at least update me on whether or not we could actually meet in the NEAR future. The reviews are fantastic overall and they have an amazing selection. I've never heard of any other real issues or dissatisfaction from others which is why I was so confused. My wife had the set picked out and I was ready to put the cash down. We passed because it felt too awkward and rejecting. This experience is supposed to fun and exciting so we made it happen elsewhere. (Diamonds Forever) in the Point Loma plaza. My husband-to-be and I had searched the internet for ring designs we liked and settled on the Christian Bauer line. However, not many retailers carried the line. We first went to the only local retailer (chain) handling the line but weren't ready to take the plunge. A month or so later, we were visiting family in San Diego and decided to check out Mulloys on State Street in Carlsbad as they were also an authorized retailer. We met Kimberly who was very helpful and even looked up inventory at their other location for us to look at. We were still not quite ready but that was OK, Kimberly told us to just let her know if and when we were ready. Within another couple of months, I had done research on line and had a better idea of exactly what we wanted and what we might expect to pay. While in San Diego, we checked out the local store of the chain we had already visited and got a price: full list. Then we went on to Mulloys. Kimberly remembered us and once she knew exactly what we wanted, she gave us a great price due to a holiday promotion. She also checked size carefully as what she measured differed from the other retailer we had visited. Needless to say we went with Mulloys and the whole procedure went like clockwork and we got our rings in plenty of time for our wedding. And the sizing was perfect! I prefer to support small bricks and mortar businesses even if it costs a bit more but in this case it cost less by hundreds of $$!
