We visited her at the Torrance Farmer's Market on an early Saturday morning and boy we're we lucky to make it there on time before she sold out of everything (and yes, she usually sells out typically before noon so if you're serious about desserts and macarons you better get your butt outta bed early for these mugs). For several years now I've been trying to figure out what makes a good macaron, a great macaron; and Munch is my answer to that. A great macaron has a texture that accomplishes both a crisp and pleasantly tactile meringue shell but a delightful chewy center and Munch has no shortcomings there. Although simple is good, a great macaron's magic comes out in the flavoring of the buttercream. Munch has a pletora of well thought out and executed flavors. A prime example is their Black Sesame flavor. You get a punch of black sesame and the flavor isn't subtle at all, which I thoroughly enjoy. I applaud Munch in also edging the traditional French patisserie borders and spotlighting culturally(Filipino) inspired flavors such as Ube, Pandan, and Leche Flan. I've had macarons from Ladurée, Pierre Hermé, Bottega Louie, and have macaron taste tested for a plethora of test kitchens and caterers but what makes Munch Bakery special is from the first bite to the last bite, you can tell that these are made with tons of heart and soul. Exceptionally priced macarons that I had at the Torrance Farmer's Market. A dollar fifty, are you kidding me? Good texture. Wonderfully diverse selection. Impressive flavors; none of them taste over the top, so many of them are just right. These macarons compare very favorably with others I've had. Not the best but solid all-around and the best value I've seen. My personal experiences: Buko Pandan - bomb Horchata - bomb Pistachio - bomb Black sesame seed - bomb Ube - okay Leche Flan - Subpar. Tasted very plain. Service was meh. The proprietor spent a hot minute serving customers who appeared to be her relatives while my wife and I stood there not wanting to interrupt. But that hot minute got longer and longer while we just awkwardly shuffled around wondering if we should leave or not. Eventually one of the family members decided to pull away (he knew we were waiting) before the proprietor even decided to look at us. When we were being helped, the proprietor was super nice. However, there was one awkward exchanged when I asked what the most popular flavors were. Her response was, "Don't you want to choose your own?" Eventually we explained we wanted a sort of starting baseline because the selection was so enormous (around 20 flavors available). I have a huge sweet tooth and for some reason never understood the hype about macarons (I always thought they were just 'okay' and never had ones that had me going back for more). Munch Bakery's macarons are a HUGE exception to this! I've tried quite a few of the flavors, and they are absolutely delicious! Melanie does a wonderful job of making sure the flavors are truly present in her macarons. I ended up using some of the Filipino inspired flavors (Ube and Buko Pandan) for wedding favors because I wanted to incorporate a bit of culture, and guests loved them! I even gave swatches of my wedding colors to Melanie, and she was able to customize the macarons. They looked and tasted great! If you haven't tried the macarons yet, I definitely do recommend them! I am currently craving some as I write this review. If I didn't move to the east coast, I'd go to the farmers market tomorrow to pick some up. Thankfully, Munch Bakery has an online shop. I wouldn't say I'm a Macaron fiend but Ive had my fair share and I have got to say, these are the best macarons Ive tried. I've been to Bottega Loui in LA and Bon Epi in OC and those places are great, but they have nothing on Munch Bakery. The only reason I gave them 4 stars is because there is no actual location, but I shouldnt be too bummed because thats probably what keeps their macaron at only $1.50/piece as opposed to the norm of $2/piece. So I just ate a bite from each of the 6 macarons I JUST purchased from the farmers market and heres what I think of the flavors, starting with my favorite Ube- (Taro) AMAZING. love love love! Pistachio- all around great nutty flavor. Its a staple in the macaron field! Earl Grey- Very good. Bottega Louis might taste a little more like earl grey but STILL, GREAT texture! Nutella- Not as nutty flavor but still, amazing! Young Cocunut- Didnt really taste the flavor, but still, Amazing because of the texture. So as you can tell, some of the flavors wernt quite as strong as I would like, but I would still go again because the texture of these babies were by far, the best Ive ever tasted! Keep it up! PS- I wish I could buy more right now to serve at my meeting later on tonight! Bummer! read more

I have a major sweet tooth and will try anything once but will only become a regular customer for my favorites. I love her flavor varieties, they are traditional flavored (like mango, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate and mocha) and seasonal (like pumpkin and guayaba) and taste like home (abuelitas hot chocolate, horchata, ube, and leche flan). I love the macaroons but also did a large order of cupcakes (red velvet and dulce de leche with strawberry buttercream frosting) for my best friends wedding (no pun intended). They stayed moist all day and the frosting was not too sweet. I would definitely order them again for special events or visit in the fall for the pumpkin! read more

We headed out to the farmers market this past Saturday just to get macarons. Found them, saw the flavors, saw the prices: 1 for $1.75, 6 for $10 (and another price for more but I forgot). We decided to go for 6 so we could try lots of flavors. **We also saw a sign saying you get 3 free macarons for writing a positive review on Yelp. I guess I'm NOT getting free macarons and now I see why there are so many 5 star reviews.** The good: filling flavors were very good. We tried nutella, vanilla, mocha, Mexican hot chocolate, white chocolate raspberry, and caramelized coconut cream. The bad: the macaron shells were mainly crunchy (only a little bit of chewiness), shattering as we bit into them. They are supposed to have a thin crispy outer layer then a chewy moist interior. At least that's how we love our macarons. Hubby declared he was not going to buy these again, that's how disappointed he was. I am on the fence since I did like the flavors. But yeah, too bad the texture was way off. Very disappointing especially for the price. read more
