My niece wanted mochi for their graduation treat. I tried to see what was available in SD. I did read about this little spot. It is located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace. They have a lot of very nice pricey packaged goodies(special Japanese chocolate and peach jellies and fancy mochis) in the front area. I ended up near the window displays towards the back. I was eyeing up the cream buns. (red bean, custard, matcha, chocolate) I have never seen these before, but I decided to not get these since they do not contain mochi. Right beside them are the Mochi creams. They had many different flavors, it definitely took me some time to decide. (some are: red bean, mango, green tea, peach yoghurt, apple pie, blueberry yoghurt, strawberry shortcake, choco Banana, white chocolate, chocolate, Black sesame, raspberry) These have the wonderful mochi on the outside with the flavored filling inside with soft sweet white cream in the middle). I will say the mochi on the outside is super delicious, it was chewy and incredibly soft. I have had my fair share of mochi and it's very good here. There were the flavors we got: 1. Black Sesame: 3/5 2. Strawberry Shortcake 4/5 3. Green tea 4/5 4. Red bean 4/5 5. Mango- 5/5 Each piece is not cheap, but I think they are pretty good. They come frozen and you place them in your fridge to thaw. I do think they recommend you eat them within 24 hours. I was always intrigued when passing by J.sweets, and I was so glad I went in! The Mini Gaufres were great! I got them because they came in the cutest Sanrio tins, and I wanted to keep the tins after. The Mini Gaufres were light, thin, but they were a good snack. They're not too sweet, but you can taste some sweetness from the cream. The employees were very kind and helpful! There were two different ladies that checked on me and my sister, and they were so sweet! They asked us if we had any questions or needed any help and to ask them if we needed help. The J.sweets store is on the left corner when you first enter Mitsuwa. It looks small on the outside, but it's surprisingly very big and spacious when you walk in and look at the different sweets they offer. They have tons of sweets that are great for gift giving like chocolates, cookies, crackers, etc. I would come here again. I think this is the perfect place to buy sweets for gift giving. With the variety of savory dishes at the Mitsuwa marketplace; J Sweets is definitely a welcome sweet spot! Sometimes one just needs a sweet treat after indulging in some curry or ramen and J Sweets is the perfect spot for that dessert! One can find a variety of treats here. Among their offerings is Royce Chocolate; a famous chocolate brand from Japan. One can also find Kobe Fugetsudo Petite Gaufres or tasty wafers. They also have a variety of mochi! When I stopped by here I chose to get some mochi. Their mochi is frozen and one has to wait 10-15 minutes before consuming. Prices vary but are around the $2 range. I chose to get the Honey Cranberry ($2.60) and Double Mango ($2.40). For the price; these treats are a little bit on the pricey side. The mochi are not that big. They are however yummy! They're nice and soft and the cream inside is good in flavor. I love mango and definitely enjoyed the Double Mango mochi. I definitely got that mango flavor in there. Whoever was helping me was borderline rude and impatient. This was sunday early afternoon. I saw that the lucky bag had a 50% discount and I was definitely intrigued. Considering there are multiple brands in this store, I was curious what was considered as items in the bag. So I asked, which stores are contained in this bag...ykno is it Royce, fugetsudo, and the mochi? I was on the mochi cream side because that's where I first saw the promotional lucky bags. The young lady there just sharply responded saying "I can't tell you anything" while her body is already pivoting away to the customers on Fugetsudo side. I wasn't done ...and I was keen on making a purchase. I asked again for clarifications like what's in here and asked which brands in this store, J sweets, are in this bag or not. She looked very impatient and then said yes it's the things inside this store but not the mochi cream. Her body was already a meter away and I was really confused why because I was 99% down to purchase some bags. I really wanted to clarify again because she seemed so rushed for no reason and then responded irritably "I can't tell you anything" with shrugged shoulders. Mind you there were other employees in J sweets so I don't understand the rush to the other side. Maybe a heads up that she needs to do something? This is purely a review of just the Mochi Ice cream, NOT the other desserts. We ordered one of each flavor of mochi ice cream - mango coconut, matcha, chocolate banana, mint chip, and blueberry. A coworker of mine recommended Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. Thought I try it out this past weekend so I visited Santouka Ramen located inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace at Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. As I was waiting for my Santouka Ramen to-go order, I noticed J.sweets right across from it and was drawn to take a peek. I walked over and saw a few rows of mochi behind the glass window. I assumed they were fresh mochi. I asked the lady at the register which mochi she would recommend. She named a few, but then I thought why not try them all so I went bonkers and bought all 19 of them. I could tell the lady was surprised by the look in her face, but hey, I'm giving them business so she should be happy LOL. I know I was happy and looking forward to trying them all. Another lady was packaging the mochi. At the time, I was still thinking they were fresh mochi, but when I got to my car and opened the 2 boxes, I noticed the mochi were frozen. I was slightly disappointed, but I got over it quick. The lady reminded me to refrigerate them after I arrive home... maybe it's not a good thing to refreeze them =). After trying all of them which took me a few days, here's my take from "best choice" to "could be better". Knocked off 1 star for the lack of flavor on some of the mochi. 1. Raspberry Mille-Feuille - This one is my favorite. It's the B*MB! It has the wonderful creamy raspberry cheesecake-like taste with the right amount of sweetness plus there's a crunch of some sort. I'll have to buy it again to figure out what's the crunch or I can just ask them next time LOL. 2. Apple Pie - Another favorite of mine. It's the 2nd B*MB! Maybe it has something to do with the crunch because it, too, had that crunch. Nice apple + cream flavor. 3. Double Mango - B*MB #3! Very good mango flavor. 4. Sakura - Great cherry + cream flavor. 5. Sweet Potato - Good and dense, but could be a tad sweeter though. 6. Caramel Pudding - Very light, but could be a bit sweeter though. 7. Strawberry Shortcake - Light, but not enough strawberry flavor. 8. Chocolate Banana - Interesting, but it worked... had chunks of something... I'm guessing the chocolate. 9. Cafe Au Lait - First bite was okay, but the coffee after taste was better. 10. Honey Cranberry - Kinda tart, but the honey helped smooth out the tartness eventually. 11. Red Bean - Good, but not sweet enough. 12. Caramel Macchiato - If you like coffee, you'll like this creamy coffee taste. 13. Black Sesame - Not enough black sesame flavor. 14. Red Sweet Potato - Okay, but couldn't taste the sweet potato flavor at all. 15. Chocolate - Way too much chocolate powder on the outside. Didn't care too much of the inside. 16. Green Tea - Way too much matcha powder on the outside. Inside was good. 17. Peach Yoghurt - Had a sandy taste to it. 18. Blueberry Yoghurt - Very strong blueberry tartness. 19. White Chocolate - It had white chocolate chunks, but no flavor at all which was surprising because white chocolate is known for being very sweet. I felt I was eating plain mochi LOL. Staff was very friendly. The price is around $2.00+ per mochi... a tad pricey, but hey, it's Japanese mochi at your fingertips LOL. You don't have to fly all the way to Japan to buy them. Parking is plenty since it's located at a mall, but beware... there are 60 and 90 mins parking spaces. Not sure how they track the time each car has parked or if they give you a ticket of some sort if you've parked longer than you should... maybe they mark your tires or something LOL. I was at my 90 mins mark so didn't experience any ramifications nor did I check my tires LOL. Anyway, give J.sweets a try when you're at any Mitsuwa Marketplace that has them. Finally, it arrived in Washington state. That is Minamoto Kitchoan - white peach mochi. Their mochi is so delicate in texture and taste. I love the "just enough" hint of white peach taste. It tasted authentic and fresh. J. sweets opened not too long ago and already draw a crowd each time I walked by. The tiny shop is inside Uwajimaya in Bellevue. It looked more like a pop up store. Oh well, I don't care for fancy storefront as long as I can get it with a free parking lot. Finally, there is no crowd or line today. I walked up and picked up the very last box of white peach mochi. This place is definitely on the high ends... The gift boxes are beautiful. I guess the mochi are sort of like French macarons but with Japanese flavor. What that means to me is that the sweets are not too overpowering. I can enjoy each bite and not feel like I have to drink tons of water to wash down my taste buds. We tried the caramel pudding and the uji kintoki (green tea) mochi. They were heavenly and piquant! There are tons of other choices of sweets including Doraemon's favorites: dorayaki. Unfortunately, you'll probably run out of your greens before you get to try them all. With Yamamotoyama right next door for a dose of quality matcha (green tea), this is the perfect dessert after a Santouka ramen or whatever main course your heart desires in the Misuiwa food court. =) I'm coming back again! read more

This little store, located inside the Mitsuwa complex, sells top-of-the-line Japanese sweets. As mentioned by other yelpers, it's really four stores combined into one. Each section sells a different type of sweet. I think the mochi creams are the most popular. I came here specifically to get some gaufres. They are cream filled wafer crisps...that's the best I can describe them. They sell them in various sizes. They had some that were dipped in chocolate. Those are the ones I was after. So delicious! I had such a pleasant first experience at J Sweets today, that, despite the higher prices, I think this place is a five star gem! Came into the Mitsuwa market on a sunny Thursday morning to find booths surrounding the main market. I was a little nervous that I didn't pull out any cash prior to coming-based on other yelp reviews/tips, but found that not to be a problem. :) There is; however, a bofa atm inside. It is the only atm available. I was immediately fixated on J Sweets beautifully crafted displays of mochi, crackers, cookies, and the like. I didn't see anyone around, so at first, I assumed they weren't yet open. As I poked around, reading little placards describing different items, a sweet and friendly counter person popped up. Ai was her name. She is AWESOME! Not too pushy, nosy, or distracted, she patiently steered my adventurous ship to happiness. I came right after buying a hand picked box of mochi from a place down Western that specializes in making beautiful mochi, so I didn't plan on buying much here. The main counter display was filled with seasonal and year round hand crafted mochi, jelly, and mousse. There are plastic models of each item so you can see what is packaged in the beautifully wrapped single items before buying. They have expensive boxes of special mochi and jellies-ranging from $18-$100. I was glad I could buy single items. They have sakura mochi (cherry blossom leaf wrapped), pear mousse, white peach jelly and mochi (although that flavor of mochi only comes in the more pricey boxes), butter cookies that look like piruhouettes, and so much more. It really is an experience to be had. I ventured through the entire storefront, and stumbled upon the refrigerated case of creme filled mochi. There were so many flavors to choose from-i wanted to try all of them! But, thankfully, Ai let me know that they come frozen-directly imported from Japan, and must be either eaten within an hour or refrigerated within an hour. So I opted to try just one. When I asked what the houji tea flavor was, Ai said, "toasted dark brown green tea" and she had me sold. It was absolutely delectable. Light and subtle yet rich in flavor and complex. Ai sent me home with two fabulous samples I couldn't have been happier to receive, and a longing for more!! Note: it is common for more decorative extravagant boxes of mochi to be given as a gift for a special occasion: often after someone passes away-at a funeral. So if you want to surprise a friend with an amazing assortment of traditional Japanese sweets straight from Japan, make sure they won't be offended! I think the stronger coffee taste made it slightly bitter which was nice since the previous ones were soooo sweet. Very light caramel taste. The mochi that surrounds the flavor & cream was nice and chewy, but I think 4 of these for the 2 of us was a bit much (eating 2 full mochi creams each...I don't have a super big sweet tooth). I hate it when a place get popular and then all of a sudden service, or quality, or in this case all of the above and SELECTION goes down. I came here two weeks ago and they had post its on HALF of the flavors saying "SOLD OUT". I thought there was some large party or groups buying up my beloved mochi creams; however, the lady said this was a gradual result over a few days and they were working with their supplier. OK - it is all good. Things happen in business! I usually buy 6 when I come, but one was fine as I didn't like the flavors left.Though they were out of my favorite - black sesame, but I got a sweet potato mochi cream and was on my way. THEN YESTERDAY, I went and they were out of ALL flavors except for two. I couldn't even read the sloppily written note (will post photo of this mess), but I think the only two remaining were apple pie and the tea-like one. I was thinking the leftovers were not so fresh so I passed, but I found this UNACCEPTABLE! They just should have closed up the store. They need to do inventory correctly and get organized ASAP! While this place is a little pricey, they carry items that I have only seen in Japan. They sell many items that are perfect for gifts for birthdays or other occasions. My mom loves these wafer filled cookies called Gaufres. They usually come in a tin or some sort of fancy container. The last time I was there they also carry Hello Kitty Gaufres in a short tin for about five bucks. This would make a really cute omiyage! Thanks Maggie for letting me know about this place. I decided to drop by here being that i haven't been inside Mitsuwa. When Maggie mentioned Mochi Cream which is similar to Mochi Ice cream but not lol. At $1.80 and many flavors to try couldnt get just one so i got the Chocolate and then i got the double mango both were yummy. The other that got me curious but i didnt get was the grean tea chocolate bar which was 5 bucks for size not much bigger than a normal candy bar maybe next time i'll try it. First of all I will start by saying that their products are beautiful!! The presentation of it is great.... Through the display window:/ truth is, if you buy something, they grab it out of the freezer and not from the display area thing so 1. It's cold as heck, and 2. It's not nearly as pretty and presentable as the displays! They told us to wait 15 minutes for it to defrost. Like I want to wait 15 minutes to eat some dessert i just bought-.- so we waited until we got home and it was ok. Nothing special. We ordered 2 Mochi donuts. One was matcha and the other was cafe au lait. And also ordered two regular Mochi which were also nothing special. Prices are high, products are small, frozen and not that great. Rather go to Mikawaya for some much better quality and cheaper Mochi. But if you want something picturesque, go ahead, just isn't as nice as display. Just sayinh read more

If you like fine desserts and pastries, this is the place for you! It's located inside the mitsuwa marketplace and this place is spotless. I'm a huge fan of the l'espoir cookies (crisp, light, and sweet) and this is where you can get them. They're not cheap but if you want to indulge, J Sweets is it. I got a box of 12 hello kitty l'espoir cookies. I was a little disappointed because I thought the cookies would have her face but nope, she was only on the box. :( The box was $9. It's all about the packaging for all the treats a J Sweets--perfect for gift giving. They also carry every kind of mochi. I'm not a mochi fan but my friend grabbed a mango one and liked it.
