The 420 friendly place to be in Gulf Gate Sarasota! So, we have eaten at Monk's Steamer Bar across the street several times. I had noticed Munchies 420 before, but Bruce was oblivious. Then I saw the Man V Food episode ... I really wanted to try it. Bruce wanted to go see the Eagles game so we ran an errand in Sarasota & headed for Gulf Gate. We were greeted by Brad, the awesome bartender. So here's the rundown - Great Happy Hour prices & choices. Very reasonable. We ate ... Cheesesteak Quesadilla - 4.5 stars Fries - 4 stars Cheeseburger - 4 stars This is a very friendly, down to earth dive bar with 420 friendly food. The name says it all. We were drawn to this by the fried twinkies and found food to eat to finish the experience. There's 3 parts to this establishment from what I gathered. A smoke shop, inside bar and outside bar area. They don't sell short on the 420 name, ambiance definitely delivers for a dive type bar. The punk rock community knows this place very well and I love it. Everybody that works here was chill and the food didn't take too long to come out. I got a cheeseburger for my ol'lady, her son got the big daddy and I got the big sandy. Keep in mind the name is no exaggeration. My lady complained that her burger was undercooked but tasted really good. I'll take the blame cause I ordered it medium and she wanted medium well. I got the big sandy that was a stoner concoction like a mfr lol. Burger with potatoes, chicken fingers and mac n cheese. It didn't have to make sense to taste delicious. Unfortunately we waited til after we ate to try the twinkies and by that time they were kinda soggy, won't blame them because they're best warm anyway, just don't make the mistake we made lol. After the Orioles spring training game tonight, we had a craving for wings. We did a quick online search for best wings in Sarasota and the Sarasota Magazine had this place on the list near our hotel. They were right, this place makes excellent wings! The place is quite unique with an indoor store and bar with a few tables to sit at. Then, right beside it is a tiki bar with a few tables inside and many tables outside. This place looks and feels run down, but it adds to the character of it. It's just a casual place to hang out and drink at and have some food items, inside or outside. Perfect with a bunch of friends. The long list of draft beers is impressive. To order food, you do so at the store counter on the left. For us, the gentleman at the counter taking our order was super friendly and quick. We chose SPICY BBQ and MEDIUM wings cooked extra crispy. He said it would take 25 minutes for the wings due to their current queue of total orders. We drank in the tiki bar, they have lots of beer on tap. Like clockwork, the gentleman from the order counter brought us our wing order right on time, piping hot. Both of the orders of two different types of wings had some spicy heat to them; the Spicy BBQ being my favorite. The wings tasted really fresh and crispy; absolutely delicious! Be aware they use lots of sauce on their wings, which can make things messy, and cause the wings to get soggy fast. Next time, we'll tell them to go easy on it. Otherwise, the wings are perfect. It's dark inside and not much seating. The outside area has plenty seating, but the seats are uncomfortable. You have to sit on them by swinging one leg over like getting on a horse. I let my husband choose the food. He ordered a sandwich, nachos and empanadas. Everything was gross except the empanadas. The cheese they use here for all the food has to be canned cheese. I've only ordered Uber eats from here since it's the only option besides WaWA and McDonald's at a certain point at night, so don't really know if it's more of a bar than restaurant? But, I must say that their food is really trash, unfortunately. The only item on the menu that is consistently good, is the cheesesteak OG with cheese sauce. It's inconsistent in the way it's made every time, but always tastes good at least. Literally everything else I've ordered from here is so below average. The fries and onion rings are tasteless, dry, and under seasoned; the burger is tasteless, dry, and under seasoned; see the theme lol? And the "phat" sandwich recipes sound disgusting. The only one we've tried just to try it, was the "phat Dutch" with chicken tenders, bacon, spuds, etc. bc it was the most normal sounding. The quality of the ingredients aren't bad, but everything in it was so tasteless and dry, it's like they don't believe in toppings or sauces or know how to make them to tie it all together. Note to the owner, the topping option in Uber eats for the burger only allows you to pick one topping, which is why you see the onion as the only topping in the pic attached. Idk if it's like a way of cheaping out or what, but we always only get one topping with no condiments, no lettuce, tomato, onion automatically, etc. Very strange. Also, the $6 fries are a rip off; it's like a McDonald's small fries, and they put it in such a large bag lol. Bottom line, I'd only ever order from here in the future if it's late night, with nothing else open, and would only order the cheesesteak. The rest of the food is so terrible and average, and it's not the quality of the food; it's the way it's made. They need to stop smoking so much, and get someone in there that knows how to produce good food and run a kitchen lol. We came here late after a very tiring day flying from So Cal, with delayed flights , missed connections, baggage who knows where. Needless to say we ( a group of 6)) were exhausted. An original menu with a twist on familiar favorites - Definitely something for everyone. The portions were generous and decently priced, but the food wasn't all that fantastic. The wraps and the wings were a hit at our table, but some of the crazier menu items were just a bit much. The 'Phat Sandwiches' were a mashup of random items that really didn't make sense to be together in sandwich form and lacked unique flavor. They are substance, and their descriptions are certainly intriguing, but they weren't something I'd rush back in to try again. The Thai Chicken Wrap was tasty and had a lot of spice to it! The Chicken Caesar Wrap was also very good. The service was slow and the staff seemed disinterested in moving things along or fraternizing with guests. The walk-up style ordering largely takes that responsibility away from them, but it would have been nice to have someone check in on the table once our food arrived. I only go to Sarasota for two things, a museum and for the Munchies 420 Cafe. I pass Sarasota on a drive from Fort Myers to/from Orlando frequently and if I have some time, I'll make a stop here. A few times I've driven out to Sarasota just to come here. Obviously I'm a fan. So I'll be as real as I can. Parking here sometimes isn't the easiest if it's busy. This place is hot and the inside is dark. Outside is more comfortable but seems to be crowded with people who are only drinking, while most people inside are eating. There's a huge bar both inside and out, and they frequently have live music outside. Every time that I've gone, the staff at the food ordering counter aren't really friendly and they never let out a smile, but the bartenders are really nice and casual. Outside you get a feel of comfortable-ness, everybody seems to always know each other and talk to each other. Everybody is friendly and their patio is just where you wanna be when you're there. Now the food.. obviously every stoners dream. If you come here and don't eat one of the fat sandwiches on your first time, you're doing it wrong. The prices have gone up over the years, but I'm not really mad about it cause they are FAT FAT FAT sandwiches. The names do not lie. They stuff so much stuff in each of their sandwiches it's unbelievable. Don't expect to get a cute picture of it, don't expect to be clean while eating it, and don't expect to finish it. These sandwiches are SLOPPY and will likely fall apart or you'll have to eat it all with a fork. Usually I wouldn't like that in a normal restaurant dish. But here it's different, for the experience, ya know? Food quality isn't the best truthfully but for the price, you get so much food it's just insane. Some of their munchitizers are really low quality and just bleh.. but those chicken nugs are definitely the best! I definitely recommend it. Also if you like hotdogs, order one of their footlongs. This is a local bar, foodies, fun, music, lively and mostly young crowd. Opens late in the afternoon and stays open until 4:30 am. First time back since they renovated and took over the spot that was formally an ice cream shop. I was surprised how clean and spacious the dining area. The original building still houses the register to order food. Where 2 booths previously existed in the back, it is now a game room. With game machines for all ages. The counter is setup like a deli style and there even is a display of daily desserts. Transition into the doorway of the formal ice cream shop and you find a huge bar with high chairs for all. On this night, the place was jamming with music and about 4 televisions each with a different show. I was partial to the old MTV Classic music videos and was able to snag a booth where I could enjoy while I waiting for my food. What used to be the outside entrance to the ice cream shop has been transformed into an enormous Tiki Hut with another expansive bar, some high top counters and a stage for live music. On this night, the music was loud and not very appealing, add a bit of cold wind and that could explain why the indoor seating was jammed. Overall, the crowd is younger 30's and the food is delicious. The beer was cold and the service was friendly. There are plenty of tattooed, pierced, big body guards, both female and male to help keep the place peaceful and all seemed to really enjoy working here. The restaurant was clean even though it's a "dive", all employees were wearing face coverings, music and all kinds of drinks available. Temps were checked at the door. Indoor and outdoor seating available. We enjoyed mozzarella sticks, disco fries, beer, and white tea shot. I was unsure of what to drink and they found me the perfect thing. I have been looking forward to trying this place out and was left highly disappointed. The cashier decided to tell us AFTER we ordered that the food would be about an hour wait. OVER an hour went by, we asked how much longer. They said 10 minutes. 10 more minutes go by and I go up and ask for a refund because we waited for an hour and 20 minutes and they could not even bring us out appetizers. It was clear that they never even started our order and all the cashier had to say was there are only 2 people working in the kitchen. I saw multiple other tables get up and leave as well. So some friends and I stopped by this place on our way home from a school conference trip. I wanted to stop by this place again, because I had initially visited it shortly after it got featured on Man v. Food, and I loved it. Coming back, it's not under new management and has expanded beyond their original floor plan. Anywho, the atmosphere is unbeatable. The stoner vibe is stronger, every square inch of the establishment is covered in either guest graffiti or wall of shame photos from their impossible hot wing challenge. They have a nice outdoor-ish bar/porch area that's separate from the main bar and there was live music from a great band that sangs things ranging from classic country to Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball. Now, for the food. My girlfriend and I shared, as we always do. I ordered the Fat Sandy sandwich, which as a footlong sub roll two cheeseburgers, mac & cheese, chicken finger, mozzarella stick, onion hoops & spuds. It was good. It wasn't the greatest thing, but it was such a great novelty idea being covered in so much stuff, you just have a good time trying to eat this thing. Brittany went another direction. She got a 1/2 pound angus burger called the Muncharoni & Cheeseburger (bacon cheeseburger smothered in mac & cheese). This, unlike my sub, was actually above average. Even being slathered in mac & cheese, the quality of the meat still shined through, and it was very good. We both got sides, tots and "Homemade POTato chips." They were good. I like it when fried items taste fresh and are crispy but with not a lot of oil slopped around everywhere. No special seasoning on either of them. Just relied on ketchup. Now, for the part of the review where you can hopefully understand why I gave this place four stars instead of three stars. We showed up during an NFL game, and during NFL games, the bar has a special where you buy two drinks and you have access to 25 cent wings, as long as you order them in batches of 10. Sooo... we ordered 20 wings, for five dollars. I was just flabbergasted. AND they were good wings. They had a good size and heft to them, but they weren't at all fatty or gross. They were good. If I hadn't gotten my sandwich, I probably would have ordered 40 of them. The only hitch is that if you want ranch or blue cheese, it's 50 cents per little packet, so bring your own or just eat them without the sauce. read more

Dude(tte). This place is way cool. Catering to an obvious demographic, they welcome anyone to partake in the dining festivities of their gluttonous cuisine. While I was there, a family with two young children were there. Asked what rolling paper was, the father (I assume) explained what it was used for to the young boy. Interesting? Anyway, I went for a fat sandwich. Err.. shared a fat sandwich with a friend. We opted for the Fat Daddy. Neither of us finished our halves. They're certainly ginormous sandwiches to fit everything in it listed in the menu. This place was featured in MvF with Adam Richman taking on the hot wing challenge. We went down to Sarasota and needed to try this place since we seen it on Man vs Food. Well it's a hole in the wall and could not wait to try their food. We got wings and 3 sandwiches. The place was busy even at late night. Well it took forever for them to cook the food. I did see people who came in 15 minutes after me get their food. The guy who took the order was nice. We got it to go since we had. 5 year old with us and had to be over 21 after 10pm. Got the wings hot, by far no where need it, don't even seem there was sauce on them. I got the blacken chicken sandwich and that was decent. If you're down still give them a try, we have had an off night. read more
