We walked into this dive bar and there was plenty of open seating. The place was clean yet sort of dungeon like with the lighting. They have quite an extensive menu. After looking through the menu I chose it Fat Sandy. It literally had everything I would want to eat...piled into a footling sandwich! I could see how this would be the best thing you've ever tasted, but I was sober. Anyway, it was fun to try and it definitely had a variety of flavors. My husband opted in for an Alamo burger and he loved it! The onion rings and tots were soft and not crispy like they'd just come out of the fryer. Munchies is one of those great late night places for when you're feeling good (a little too good maybe) and quite literally, have the munchies. It's not a 5 star upscale restaurant, nor is it a place to bring your screaming toddler(s). It's the place to go when you want to have greasy, good comfort food and not feel any guilt about it. Menu consists of a large variety of items including sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, wraps, quesadillas, and some damn good appetizers (get the mac and cheese bites, you'll thank me later). A nice bonus? Out back is a full liquor tiki bar for when you need some cocktails with your munchie food. I can see why it's a Sarasota staple and tends to attract a lot of tourists. Our first time at munchies was last night, which was great. Karaoke was lovely, and very entertaining after a long day on Friday. This was our third trip to Munchies since the new owners took over and it will be our final time. I have been going there for 10 years and used to LOVE this place! I watched it grow from the original Munchies, to taking over the ice cream shop, to then building the tiki bar! I would brag about the place and bring all my friends there but no more. These new owner are TERRIBLE and cheap beyond imagination! The food is inconsistent, and the Fat Sandy often tastes like they reheated fried food rather than making it fresh. Sometimes it has the correct amount of Mac and Cheese, other times it's sparse at best. They have taken a successful restaurant with a unique spin on food and turned it into a wannabe smoke shop with what is now underwhelming food. The front counter that was once filled with desserts an edible delights is now filled with cheap China pipes and glassware. The food I had last night looked like it had been deep-fried three times and I didn't even get crinkle cut fries like their menu says. The last time we were there they completely forgot the mac & cheese on the Fat Sandy. They no longer offer homemade potato chips or cheesecake bites. The new staff said they could no longer get the potato chips. I mean come on how hard is it to buy fresh potatoes, slice them to make homemade potato chips??? They also got rid of the combos to jack up the price of getting a drink and tots. They took away paper towels in favor of tissue paper dispensers, got rid of name brand soda and replaced it with terrible cheap generic soda. The new owners are so cheap, they even took the water button off the soda fountain so they could sell you water. Better buy your drink before you get to Munchies and get gouged! Our trip last night was the final straw, Munchies 420 is dead to us. For 10 years I bragged about this place and felt the 3-hour roundtrip to eat there was worth every bit of my time. But now I wouldn't eat at this place if it were across the street and the food was free. Munchies is a great place for some drinks and a late night monster sandwich. My husband & I have been coming here each time we visit the area over the past 12 years. The first time we had a Munchies sandwich, it was when we were across the street at Monk's steamer bar and the other couple who was with us wanted something other than straight seafood to fill their bellies. This was back when Munchies was just in 1 little store front before they expanded about 6 years ago. It had been 7 years since our last trip down and we were excited to see that they had an opportunity to expand. This was our first stop after landing in Sarasota as we had a late flight and most of the other places we typically stop at had already closed. I spoke to the guy taking the food orders (manager??) about their expansion and he was super nice. In fact, I'm fairly certain he worked there during one of our last trips/visit's as well. I ordered the Taco Philly which I loved. My husband typically orders the Fat Daddy which is his go to, he changed it up and got the Fat Dickie this time. He felt like it chicken fingers were a little overcooked on his but it was also 1:30/2:00am so it was just chalked it up as a one off night, no harm, no foul....we will still go back and have a special place in our hearts for the Munchies 420 fam! read more

Came here with the kids because it's one of the few things open on a weekday after 10pm. Drunk people were staggering around from across the street, the restaurant was full of cigarette smoke from the bar, and WHOA- I know it's "4/20" but the decor is really only going to attract one type of crowd. It may be great for some people, but not for us, and not kid friendly. Now, the food. The broccoli bites were not good, the dankalicious nuggets were outrageously salty. The macaroni and cheese does not have a lot of flavor BUT the quality of the muncharoni burger was great and is delicious. We also got the fat sandy and fat dickie thinking it would be a home run for the kids and they didn't like it. Kids not eating a sandwich with chicken fingers, mac n cheese and cheese sticks...? This is an after hours restaurant, that will bring the crowd trying to recover from bar hopping at the bars located down the street. I'm a big fan of their fat sandwiches which is what their known for, but they have more than sandwiches, and test your luck on the spiciest wings if you'd like, not me though. I ordered the Fat Daddy which had cheese burger, chicken fingers and Philly cheese steak arrangements in it. Oh yeah, their sandwiches get messy. I'm sorry to have to write this. i really didn't want to have to be in this position and I'm probably biased but I have to say I was completely disappointed by my experience here. I'm a vegetarian. I went to Munchies with two friends who eat meat. They both ordered the Fat Daddy which looked completely awesome. There were barely any other customers and the sandwiches still took something like 30 or 40 minutes to arrive. I ordered the Fat Hippy. They told me they didn't have one of the ingredients. I said that was fine. My friends sandwiches arrived they ate them and mine still hadn't shown up. About forty or fifty minutes after my initial order the girl running the counter ( who was very nice) told me that the cook dropped the main ingredient of my sandwich on the floor and that they were now out and could not make a replacement. This made me sad and angry. She offered an alternative but the vegetarian options are really limited so I declined. She offered a gift certificate I declined that too because I don't live in the area. Bottom line I wish they would have told me sooner and more than that I wish they would keep this place stocked and push orders out a bit quicker. I can't recommend this place even though I really want to because their menu offerings are completely insane and interesting. This is one of those special places that you often hear people talk about, and think why it's taken you so long to get there. The place is very popular with locals, and is somewhere you can get food at until 4.20 am, and when you have those munchies. The food is insanely large in terms of portions and the favor profile is intense and can be bold. I went for one of the footling sandwiches that came out weighing several pounds and was packed with fried chicken, steak, cheese and an assortment of other items. Honestly it was too much and and you'd have a heart attack eating here everyday, but oh boy was it a fun place to eat at. Lots of atmosphere with a couple of different bar/dining rooms. First, if you get one of the fat sandwiches, it's so much fat and salt jammed into a roll that you don't get to enjoy the flavor of anything. One at a time and you get to enjoy the taste of that one fatty or fried, salty, delicious thing whether it be a mozzarella stick, chicken tender, beef patty, whatever junk food floats your boat. The aforementioned is usually accompanied with a dipping sauce of some sort, veggies (pickles/tomatoes, etc) or another side item to offset the salt and fried fat. You don't get that liberty here when it's all mushed together; all you taste is salt and more salt and some fried batter. If I come back, I would try a philly maybe, something more simple. Wings were also disappointing, super dry with hardly any sauce on them. Desserts were blah, fried cheesecake had too much sauce on top and chocolate thing tasted like jello pudding with box cake. Last but not least, they forgot one of our orders, took forever but was very nice about it, and there's no place to sit. So let me say that I'm not a big fan of American food just because it's super heavy and pretty freaking unhealthy especially when it's loaded with cheese and grease but I do indulge once in awhile. We just wanted to check this place out because of the Man Vs. Food vibe so just for that experience it was fun enough. None of us did the challenge but we didn't mind. This isn't the greatest little place it only has a few tables and remember there's no bathroom! It's a pretty small place and everything is served as if you're doing take out. The menu is pretty basic and it's a pretty good deal since you get a very large amount of food. I didn't love the food nor did I hate it so I don't have much to say about it. The service is a bit slow and it seems there's no one to clean up your mess so much sure to clean after yourself. Don't expect to see much when you get in but it's not a bad place to grab food if you're extremely hungry. I tried their Mac and Cheese bites and it's very interesting. Would I try it again? Probably not but the concept is pretty cool. I also had the Garbage Philly and the Alamo Burger which were both good just too heavy for my personal taste.
