I LOVED the old-world charm, stone walls, and cozy atmosphere. It made it feel as though we'd stumbled into someone's Italian grandmother's wine cellar. We had the first reservation of the evening, (there were only 2 openings available when we booked 24 hrs prior), so for a brief, glorious moment, the place was quiet, quaint, and all ours! A perfect setting for four friends to unwind and reflect on a fantastic trip. The tables filled quickly, the volume rose accordingly, and suddenly the cozy atmosphere became a lively chorus of conversations. Thankfully, the food, drinks, décor, and our gracious waiter compensated for the noise. The seating is intimate--very intimate. At one point, my friend and I attempted to leave our table but found ourselves temporarily trapped by a waiter taking an order at the neighboring table. We accepted our fate, waited patiently, and were eventually released back into civilization. Service moves at a relaxed pace here, so the two-hour reservation limit is spot on. We weren't in any rush to get back to our rental, so we happily settled into the rhythm of the evening. Pasta, cappuccino, tiramisu... oh my. A fitting finale to a wonderful Montreal getaway with good friends, great food, and just enough table-side captivity to keep things memorable.

Plus, the restaurant is intimate, the manager takes the time to come over and talk to you and ensure they have something that you would like, and for someone that gluten-free they take the time to actually go over what they have to offer. Bis has an extensive menu and an even bigger list of wines to choose from. They offer some of the classic Italian favorites, as well as more family-recipe style recipes that belong at your Italian family dinner table rather than on your common menu. All of their sauces are gluten-free and delicious, plus they keep a gluten free pasta available. I've never had a bad experience here and so far the colleagues and family that have joined me feel the same.

Had a 6pm reservation and we were first there, but within 15-20 minutes, the restaurant was filling up fast. I recommend reservations here to ensure a seat. It clearly is a popular spot. The interior is lovely, with well spaced tables, and due to its location on the second floor of the building, it's great sitting by the front window walls to look out onto the avenue and people watch. I loved the white linens and the clean black and white aesthetic, combined with the window wall and areas of exposed bricks and tall glass-enclosed wine racks. Our server was Francesco and he was absolutely amazing. Onto the food.... wow, it was good. My dad had his regular Caesar salad and after I tried a bit of it, I could see why he's such a fan. The intact romaine leaves were so perfectly crisp and perfect, I don't think I've ever had a salad where the lettuce was so perfect. The dressing and parmesan on said salad was also perfect. Honestly, I think it was the best Caesar salad I've ever tasted. Next time, I'm ordering one, for sure. My mom and I shared the eggplant parmesan and it was delicious and not heavy or overwhelming as most eggplant parmesan dishes are. We also shared their version of Caprese salad, with buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes. This was, for me, the only miss of the night. The cheese and tomatoes were delicious, but they only used olive oil on the salad, and it really called for some good balsamic vinegar as well. (Note to self: next time ask for some balsamic on the side. The dish really called for it). My folks also shared some ice cream for dessert and they said it was super good, they could tell the quality was super high. We all had drinks (even my dad, who NEVER drinks). Dad's red wine was, he said, perfect, and my mom loved her gin martini (which she noted was the biggest martini she ever had. They sure don't scrimp on drink sizes here!). As for me, I asked Francesco for a sangria on the sweet side, and he returned with the best sangria I ever had, hands down. I am not exaggerating, it was beyond delicious. We had a wonderful dinner here. I should note, at the end of our meal, my mom had a bad reaction from her meds and her drink and it got a little concerning there for a few minutes. Francesco was really helpful to us, as I had to help my mom out. (My apologies to the restaurant and nearby diners. I know it must have been disturbing for them. Mom was fine soon after and has since had some med dosages tweaked by her doctor). I should also add that parking here is a breeze. There is a large parking lot a few yards away on Greene and parking is free after 6pm, and I think street parking is free after 6 or 9pm, too, and free all day on Sunday. FYI. The worst part about this entire evening was how sick I was and my sister. We both got the mussels and they had a weird smell to them but I only noticed after I ate half my plate. Let me tell you I regret that meal terribly ! We have been sick for days! my father meal was this extremely tough veal Milanese it was not good. What a let down. My mom got the smoked salmon and there was barely anything like no salmon. What a mess. It saddens me to write this but I'll most likely never be back here. After spending $350 on what was supposed to be a beautiful night out and a welcome back dinner for my sister this left us all sad and disappointed.
