The rich, flavorful broth pairs so well with the seafood and rice... they're both delicious dishes that are so perfect on a chilly Boston night. Their dishes are served in clay pots which makes for a fun presentation. They also have a wide selection of fruit smoothies which we really enjoyed. The service was wonderful as well. Our waitress was so friendly and super attentive while making sure we always had everything we needed. Muqueca has a casual vibe with a family-owned feel. You really feel welcomed when you walk in. Last night I ate the fried calamari, which is delicious, and the seafood rice as an entree. Seafood rice was big enough to share! Very good and every bite had shrimp, mussels, or calamari. I swear the calami was better in the rice dish than the fried rings. And the fried calamari is seriously good. The dish is a healthier, gourmet version of the traditional Brazilian muqueca Bahiana. While it's not as authentic and flavorful as the original, the ingredients are of high quality, especially the fish and shrimp. I highly recommend trying their fresh juices. Although it was our first time at the restaurant, the service felt rushed, and we weren't given much guidance about the menu. The waitress also didn't check on us much, and it was hard to get her attention for the check. We were surprised to find that an 18% gratuity was included in the bill, as this wasn't mentioned on the menu. So glad we found this Brazilian restaurant in Cambridge. We came here for dinner during our Boston visit. It's a little out of the way from the touristy areas of Boston and Cambridge but worth the longer walk. We ordered the Coconut Shrimp for an appetizer and the Seafood Rice, Fish Moqueca, and Feijoada Completa for our entrees. They were all very good. The Coconut Shrimp was nice and crispy and the sauce that came with it was delicious. The Seafood Rice is a rice casserole with different types of seFood including mussels, shrimp, and squid. I normally don't like squid cause it is too chewy but the texture in this casserole was very good. The flavor was great and the balance of seafood and rice was perfect. The Fish Moqueca was also very good. The fish is haddock and was cooked in a tomato type stew. The texture of the fish was very flaky and soft. and the sauce was a good flavor. The Feijoada Completa was a black bean stew with different types of meat. Most of the meat was very tender. There were a few pieces that were a little chewy but the flavor of this dish was unique and flavorful. It came with plantain and collard greens both of which were very good. The greens and plantain came on a separate dish but was part of the Feijoada dish. Service was very good. But we did get there for an early dinner so we were the only customers when we got there around 6pm. When we left about an hour later all the tables were filled. My girlfriend is from Porto Alegre, and I have now started a household-wide conflict by claiming that the moqueca here in Cambridge was just as good as her mom's recipe... I regret NOTHING! Opted to visit the Cambridge area while staying at Boston. A short drive but not so close to walk there from downtown. It was a windy and chilly afternoon and this place was packed to the gills! Most everyone at the restaurant is a Portuguese speaker, but the staff also spoke English/Spanish and we understood each other Waited about 10-15 mins for a table and was served drinks promptly. They have an amazing menu of seafood and Brazilian dishes. So difficult to chose because everything on the menu sounded great! Ordered a seafood Mariscada and it was a huge portion. Specifically, the Calamari (which I expect to be hit or miss) was very good. (As was our second plate). Everyone was happy with their food, and the fresh juices (Passion Blue, pineapple mint) were amazing. I'm surprised this place doesn't make it atop Eater Boston's list every time, but then I'm kinda glad since there's typically not a wait. Amazing amazing amazing Brazilian food (although I admit to being no expert) with knock-your-socks-off flavors and great, fresh seafood. I highly recommend the fish and shrimp muqueca (signature dish, seafood stew served in a clay pot) as well as the mariscada (similar idea with squid and mussels and crabmeat, but cooked in coconut milk). Portions are generous and even the rice is soft and fluffy and delicious. I think most of their dishes are served with a side of fish gravy, which is so delicious I always want to lick the bowl it comes in. They also offer an excellent, super spicy hot sauce if you ask, and we got a small side of plantains as well as yucca flour to top our dishes with. Entrees will run $20-25 each. Service is friendly and fast, the decor is fine -- comforting but not high-end or anything. Bathroom was clean. And small protip -- if you come for brunch / during lunchtime, they do have coffee for $2, even if it's not on the menu. read more

**NOTE** This place is NOT open on Monday! This place can only be described as EPIC for any seafood lovers out there. Inside seating is ample and their dishes are just out of this world. A must have starter has to be the fried yucca. It's similar in taste to a potato and has the most awesome creamy, starchy texture on the inside and crispy, crunchy layer on the outside. When combined with either the spicy Brazilian sauce (spicier than expected!) or the savory dill sauce, you can't go wrong with this! Also ordered the seafood casserole and fish and shrimp moqueca which were also fantastic. Each dish was chock full of seafood and the rice in the casserole dish soaked up all those lovely seafood juices. Unreal! The fish and shrimp moqueca also have a lovely savory broth that's extremely flavorful. These two are definitely must haves! Food was good, and the seafood was fresh. During the meal, no waiters/waitresses stopped by to ask whether everything was ok or whether we needed anything. When we got the check, we were not notified that tips were already included, but the number did not seem to be right. We then found out that the restaurant had already included the tips. Had an awesome dinner here! We started with a heart of palm salad and the garlic shrimp. A tasty combo. Then, the main attraction was the fish muqueca- we got a portion of 2 to share between three people. The broth had coconut milk, but it wasn't creamy- it was pretty light and tomato-y. We also each got a rice, and got a side of sweet plantains and of beans. Perfect amount of food. You have to go with the muqueca- such a nice combo of flavors stewed in this pretty pot. & They have this spicy hot sauce that really ties the dishes together, made with ground Brazilian peppers. It tasted like habanero- awesome! For dessert we had passion fruit mousse. It had a thin layer of tart passion fruit jello on top with some crunchy seeds, and a decadent cream underneath. Muqueca is located on the strip of Cambridge St., where I was told, lots of hip restaurants to eat. Muqueca is also well known by many MIT and Harvard students as the place to order their authentic traditional caipirinha (Brazilian hillbilly drink). I suggest ordering their side of plantains. Their Feijoada ComPleta is a Brazilian National Dish and really good. It comes with Black beans stew with fresh & dried meat, pork, sausage & bacon, and served with collard greens, fried plantain, farofa & orange. It was mouth watering and so good and cooked in a clay pot. For dessert, their chocolate flan was good but super rich, so if you don't like it super sweet, I suggest their tapioca coconut dessert instead . What surprised me the most, I requested a cup of coffee after a nice meal, and our nice waitress made me an awesome Brazilian espresso. What a treat! On a Friday night this place can get pretty packed. My friend and I fortunately didn't have to wait too long as we got their early. Note that this place only serves full parties. We got the fish muqueca and mussels muqueca and both were flavorful and rich, however the only distinguisher between the two was the type of meat. Both were tomato and onion broth based. We also got the fried yucca which were crispy yet light and airy, these were served with an aioli type dip The one downside of this place is that it's not super T accessible. My Brazilian coworker raves about this place and comes regularly with her family, so I wanted to give it a shot! Let me start by saying that this was my first experience with Brazilian food other than steakhouses, so I can't comment on the authenticity of Muqueca. I'm just comparing the experience to the various other Latin and European foods that I've had. My friend and I went on a Tuesday at 7:30, and there were about 5 tables being occupied. The interior is pretty casual, no frills, with some colorful wall decorations. We wanted an authentic experience, so we started out with some caipirinhas. Man were these good. Just the right amount of alcohol and very citrusy and fresh. We then split an order of fried yucca. I'm familiar with yucca and have had yucca fries at different restaurants, and this dish wasn't spectacular. The small bits of yucca were fried well, but the white "special sauce" didn't have much flavor, so we ended up also dipping them in the hot sauce that was on our table. We then split one muqueca with fish and shrimp. They brought two orders of rice with this, and it was definitely enough for two people. I don't know.. I guess I just had high expectations, but this didn't blow me away. The tomatoes, onions, and cilantro in the clay pot complemented the seafood well. It also came with a small bowl of fish sauce, which I scooped by the spoonful onto the rice since the white fish was a bit bland on its own. Overall, it was a nice dish, but I've had more flavorful stews in the past. Considering that we had 2 drinks, split one appetizer, and split one entree, the total of nearly $50 seemed a bit steep, especially since the environment is so casual and the ingredients used weren't super expensive (we mainly filled up on yucca and rice). Their menu is extensive, so if I return I would try something else. I'd still recommend it for a solid Brazilian food experience! And get the caipirinha! read more

A very pleasant place to enjoy typical sea food in traditional Muqueca dishes . The service was good and the place is full of artistic paints that reflect South American spirit! We started with Caipirinia with Fried Yuca and dried beef! The latest was delicious, Crunchy and rich in flavors. The caipirinia was fine (not the best I ever had) I had a Mariscada and my partner had the Cod Capixaba. We were both surprisingly satisfied with the taste and the amount of sea food in the dishes. Rich in flavors, I enjoyed every single bites of my dish. My partner was very satisfied too even though the cod is usually difficult to balance the amount of salt. Tiny little place that none of the locals seem to know about. If there's large parties the servers can be a little overwhelmed. Just be patient. Everything we tried here was good. Had the traditional caipirinha aka Brazilian hillbilly drink. Most of the dishes come with sides such as rice and plantains. Had a beef dish and shrimp and fish dish. Both very flavorfu even without the sauces. Seems like you can't go wrong at this place. The chocolate flan was good but could be rich for some. Tapioca coconut dessert was even better. I've missed Brazilian food. When I was in Brazil a month ago I had moqueca in different regions of Brazil literally all the time and they were so good.. Here at Muqueca it wasn't bad, but it's all diluted. We had the calamari and fish moqueca, which came in a small pot with tomato broth? I expected something much thicker and richer and this dish was similar to..let's say hot pot. The pirão that came on the side was very watery compared to the one I had in Brasil- always thick and rich. Rec: ++++Moqueca Completa ($25.95)- this is a TREAT for seafood lovers. It's a seafood stew with an abundance of fish, mussels, and shrimp boiled in a savory broth. Served together is a house made gravy that has a cornstarch like consistency- nearly tasteless but we still added it anyways since there's ground up fish in there too. Included is only 1 plate of rice that's enough for 1 person. Although their signature clay pot dish may look small at first glance, it's enough for 2 people. With other reviewers saying there was a line waiting to get in, it was quiet on a Sunday evening with 3 tables including us dining. Nicole, our waitress, provided excellent service.
