I stopped yesterday after reading all the good reviews. I got there about 20 minutes before they closed and ordered 6 jelly sticks. The man behind the counter wasn't rude, but he wasn't pleasant either. He said very few words and proceeded to finish doing what he was busy with and picked out 6 jelly sticks with his ungloved hands. He then took my cash and made change with ungloved hands and filled the order of the people behind me with the same hands. I was going to leave a nice tip but I couldn't get past the no glove issue. I put the donuts in my car and dropped them in the garbage can at the mini mart. Sucks, I love good donuts. read more

Love this place! Now in their second generation, the Muriel's tradition is alive, and well, and delicious. The storefront, in a quiet residential neighborhood, is an empty room where you stand while you wait & order, there is a window/counter where you order, and behind the counter is where they make the doughnuts. It couldn't be more simple. The offerings are all cake doughnuts and crullers. Plain, sugar, cinnamon, jelly - all prepped to order. A local legend, and well worth its reputation. read more

I heard about Muriel's when my granddaughter and I were trying Nutrition on the Green. Eric a local was kind enough to encourage us to try her donuts. We went today as soon as she opened. I feel in love with her donut shop and her. The sweetest person she just melted our hearts as she proudly showed her donuts. We picked each donut style. We could taste the love she puts into her donuts. I am a big fan of frequenting locally owned business. Make sure to stop in whether you get 1 donut or a dozen it is well worth the trip. Muriel's Donut shop is the best of it's kind by far in the entire east coast! The quality of the donuts is that of which you could never experience from the finest Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts chefs throughout the country. You walk in craving a donut, and you walk out craving a chiefs masterpiece. You can make your own donuts at home, but I guarantee you, no matter how good of a chef you may be, you're not going to make a donut even worth comparing to Muriel's. Apart from the absolutely addicting desserts, the interactions with the employees are some of the best I have ever experienced. You would think the employees went to college for a customer service major at the local Ivy League college, Dartmouth, but no, Muriel's is just that good. Great doughnuts at affordable prices! Muriel is very sweet and her donuts are delicious. It looks like a one woman show with Muriel doing everything. You literally can see the fryolator right behind the counter. Hours are limited, but the doughnuts are fresh. All the flavors are cake doughnuts. The best was the jellystick. The crueller and the original are the same, but it was a different shape. Prices are $9/dozen, $5/half dozen, or $1 each. Plenty of street parking. read more

I have been really sleeping on this place. I can't believe I haven't heard about it before because these are the best donuts I've ever had. Muriel herself (and her husband) fry up the donuts fresh right in front of you. It may take some time for them to be ready, but they're fresh and delicious. Got here around 12:30pm on a Saturday and she had warm jelly sticks fresh out of the fryers. I am a huge cake donut fan, came here after seeing a write up online touting Muriel's as one of the best in the state for donuts and would agree. The cake donuts were crispy yet light, had a great flavor and were a dollar a donut! I would put this up with Leavitt's in Conway for cake donuts though Leavitt's has quite a bit more options to choose from. If you are looking for a classic donut to dip in your coffee however, Muriel's can't be beat. I drive an hour and a half for these donuts and have no regrets. read more

Had our first taste of Muriels donut heaven !! It's all we thought and expected and heard it would be ! She's such a sweet lady! Yes, they are fried and have to soak up oil on paper towels a lil bit ....not health food ! I couldn't eat them daily because of the oil, BUT oh my goodness what a special treat we had !! Melt in your mouth ! She offered us the ones right off the fryer! Amazing taste ,best when warm . I had the jelly stick ...was very yummy! It had a normal amount of jelly in it . This place is easy to miss, with it being in a residential area, but don't miss it! Such a hidden gem of a donut shop! Delicious, fresh donuts are available and made by Muriel, the owner and baker. We stopped by Muriel's donuts to see what we would find after reading the only other review. My goodness, a donut like this simply doesn't exist anywhere else I've been! This was the freshest donut I've had in my life. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, a golden, fragrant crispiness, dusted with sugar right before our eyes (one sugar, one cinnamon), and the cake inside was soft and light. On first bite we looked each other in the eyes, both thinking, THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE DONUT!!! There was no need to use words. This is something special. The fact that Muriel is making the donuts herself, and that she had a lovely smile and kindly words for us, and that the space is just a little walk up window in the house looking straight into the kitchen makes it even better. It's National Donut Day so let me tell you about the best donuts you're gonna get in the Upper Valley. There are a few drawbacks to this little hole in the wall. Muriel keeps unusual hours. The shop is very small and dated with nowhere to sit. There's no coffee offered so you still need to take that trip to Dunkin'. The selection is very limited. And, as one astute Yelper pointed out, the donuts are cooked with lard (because apparently someone thought donuts were supposed to be healthy...). But Muriel's only claims to do one thing; make a small selection of donuts. And when you're the best at what you claim to do then you damn well better be getting five stars. Stop by, drop a few bucks, get a couple jelly sticks, and have yourself a good morning. read more

You don't tamper with perfection. A few people seem to have a problem with cooking doughnuts in lard. Turns out, (and look it up for yourself!) there are more reasons to keep using lard than just the superior texture and flavor found in foods such as Muriel's Donuts; Lard has a better lipid profile than Crisco and most vegetable oils, and without those nasty trans fats. Muriel's Donuts is a no frills spot - the basement of a multifamily building, it has a walk up window where you face the donuts, the baker, the solid as all get out donut making table ( it was in the building before the donut business when there was a butcher in residence but don't worry, the donuts are rolled out on a new wood surface on top of the old butcher block) and the fryer all at once. Donuts are the basic - plain, jelly, coated with sugar or cinnamon & powdered sugar, and they also have krullers, - known also as a jelly stick if you want jelly in it. But in taste and texture, these donuts have no peer. I ordered a stick with powdered cinnamon sugar. The chosen stick was taken out of the tray and dropped into a plastic bag with said mixture, shaken up on the spot and served up freshly coated. The outer texture was slightly crusty and crunchy on the outside, which yielded to a flakey soft, light interior that had a very fresh not too sugary taste. I suspect part of the secret was the big can of lard I saw tucked under the counter. So, enjoy, but in moderation! read more

It's a really cool place, but to be fair, I'm not always a donut person. I eat certain donuts, but I will often pass on Dunkin for example when I get coffee. Donuts are cheap and given to you by Muriel herself! However, I ate one and man, it was super, super rich. I felt like I needed to eat salad the rest of the day. They are super reasonable, but be prepared to bring cash. Also, check on the hours-Muriel's is open for three hours or so-maybe 10 am to 1 pm? Probably because she can. read more

Found Muriel's as we were passing through on 89 and looking for a snack to hold us over to our destination in VT. It's in a bit of a weird location, and I felt like I was walking into Muriel's personal kitchen. But these are definitely the most delicious donuts I've ever had.
