I'm just basing this review off the food since my family and I did takeout. We ordered calamari to share and I ordered the lobster roll. I thought the calamari was pretty good. Nice and flakey and flavorful. The lobster roll however was not the greatest. But you have to put into perspective where you are. You're not anywhere near the water where seafood is well known and super fresh. So you just have to consider that when eating here. For what you pay, i don't think it's worth it. We decided to stop by the restaurant. The waitress was nice but service was extremely slow at 2pm with few customers. The silverware and plates were dirty. We ordered lobster guacamole which was okay. The calamari was tiny and soggy. Buttermilk chicken sandwich could have been better. The pulled pork sandwich was plain with no sauce. The atmosphere and service is great, I went on a Tuesday evening, so was a relaxed scene. Although the bartender said it can get packed with college students on the weekends. I had the grass fed burger, ordered medium with the fries. It was excellently cooked and full of flavor, quite succulent! The fries were also great, although a little less crispy than I typically prefer. Would definitely recommend a visit and I plan to go again on this trip. read more

The place is in a great location and outdoor space doubles the size. Service was very good and our seats were nicely located to look over the outside street. That's where it ends. The food was disappointing with a seafood disk that had the telltale smell of having been around too long. The meatloaf was okay but the roasted vegetables seemed to have been cooked days before and were soggy. That it only took 3-4 minutes for the food to appear after ordering gives credence to it having been sitting in a steam table for some time. I recommend sticking to the sandwiches and simple item that you know are cooked to order. read more

Only good for a beer and a cheese board, not much else... This establishment is exactly what a two star donning experience is. The food was criminally under seasoned, over cooked, with use of low quality ingredients. A chef that sent out gluey mash potatoes and an over-well done steak ordered rare. Do yourself and your party a favor and dine elsewhere as you will be dissatisfied here. Our waiter was very nice, the owner however not so much. It's primarily a bar, with a food menu on the side. Food options were limited, portions were small, and on the whole things were rather overpriced. To be fair, I don't drink, so I can't speak for their alcohol selection. I got a plate of nachos with chicken and it barely covered a normal sized dinner plate. They looked like plain tortilla chips with a sprinkling of cheese over them and minimal toppings, and cost me $21. The service was fine, but the food was underwhelming and unsatisfying. I went at night, and the environment was dim, dingy, and uncomfortably loud. I felt crammed into a noisy corner and kind of wanted to leave as soon as I got there. A bunch of TVs were playing a variety of different things and I just felt like there was way too much going on in not enough space. Came here the evening of the 27th. Sat in the library. We were the first of 3 tables of 7/8 that were sat by the hostess in 20 mins ish. Wait staff appeared to be training someone on their first day and looked overcommitted capacity wise. Drink orders and appetizers were taken promptly and then chaos seemed to ensue. 2 groups of 7 walked out. Kitchen 'crashed' we overheard whatever that meant. At no point did anyone come over and say anything to us - we weren't in a rush so just went with the flow. Food arrived over an hour later from initial order - food was good which rescued experience from a 2/5. I would come back - clearly the overall positive reviews this place indicates this is a one off experience..... one would hope! read more

We ate in Murphy's on December 27 (see other reviewers). We were meeting an old friend and were not in a rush. Our reservation got us in immediately at 6:00 and we were told that there would be a large party at 7:30 which wouldn't be a problem because we would be finished. We asked our server questions about the menu which he couldn't answer because it was his first day but a super nice guy. Orders were put in and then we were told that there would be a delay because the kitchen was "overwhelmed" but we should get our food within 30 minutes. After 45 minutes no food and server came out and said they were working on it. By this time 2 large tables next to us had left without their food. We tried to find another restaurant on our phones without success so waited. Finally after 90 minutes we got our grilled chicken sandwiches which were almost inedible (very rubbery and no seasoning with tiny piece of chicken). I have had better grilled chicken at ski market lodges for half the price. We were told that the owner had come in to help out in the kitchen. Of course while we were eating the 25 person party arrived in our small section making it difficult to talk. You would think that at some point the owner would come out to apologize or comp us something as a gesture. Had he done so I probably would not be writing this review. I understand that there are labor shortages and running a restaurant is difficult but to not apologize is arrogant. We had eaten at the restaurant previously with good experiences and were hoping to show our friend what a good meal could be had. read more

Such a huge disappointment tonight. I used to eat here as a student and have continued to on visits back to campus, the last being summer 2021. My husband and I took another trip up to Hanover this week and were looking forward to our favorite Murph Burger after a day of snowboarding. When we arrived around 6pm on a Tuesday they were busy as usual, but we quickly got a table for 2 (plus a spot for our stroller) up front. The waitress was very nice and told us she had just recently started with Murphy's so she was still learning the ropes, which normally wouldn't be a problem. We had a six month old baby with us so we were hoping to eat relatively quickly and placed our food order at the same time as our drink order, around 6:15. The family of four next to us did the same right after, getting their drinks before us. After about 15 minutes, we finally got our drinks...still not sure why pouring one beer and one glass of wine took that long, but I could overlook that in anticipation of my Murph Burger. After half an hour, we were still waiting for our two burgers. We asked and were told that the kitchen was running behind because someone who was supposed to be working that night walked out at the beginning of their shift. Okay... Forty-five minutes later, our food came to the table and was a disappointment from first sight. The burgers honestly looked sad compared to what they used to be--alongside a VERY small pile of french fries (for me) and coleslaw (for my husband). On top of that, after waiting for so long my Murph Burger was missing all of the toppings that make it the special here. The waitress was very nice in insisting on bringing it back to face the sauce and shallots added, but that just meant my burger and fries didn't have a chance to be enjoyed hot and fresh (they just brought it back to the kitchen and slapped on the extras). Pretty unbelievable quality and portions for $18. At this point we were hungry and just wanted to eat so we could move on with our night. While we were eating, the family next to us seemed to be having a similar experience with delays and dish after dish coming out incorrectly. Once we were done, we shared our dissatisfaction with the waitress who was very apologetic, offered to comp something, and sent the manager over. The manager was also very kind and apologetic, and speaking with her we learned that the chef was also new. Awesome. After the waitress and manager were both so nice, imagine my surprise when we got the check and not only was nothing comped (even though the family next to us was told by the waitress their appetizer would be free??) but our burgers that were exactly the same (Murph burger, no bacon) were charged different amounts. How does that even happen?! The waitress fixed the check issue, my husband brought our now overtired baby outside (it was more than 1.5 hours after we arrived and placed a simple order immediately), and I paid. On the way out, I decided I had to talk to the manager again which is when I learned that she is new too (to both Murphy's and to managing a restaurant in general). So that's a new waitress, new chef, and new manager. No wonder the whole place was such a flop. The manager was very nice again, but basically blamed her newness on not realizing that comping something could have helped the situation after the waitress asked her to do that. (Has she not eaten in a restaurant before?? Why did the other table get comped something??). She asked if it was too late to make it up ... after I paid, when I can see a crowd waiting for her to seat them in the small entry space, and while my husband is waiting out in the cold with our tired. I said yes it was too late, I'm not going to wait around another 15 minutes for something that should have been made right after we first complained to the waitress and the manager earlier. I'm not sure why Murphy's needed so many new people at the same time, but maybe they could stand to close up shop for a week to do some serious training for everyone (and to hopefully get the new chef not to mess up the old classics). read more

This is a staple on the green in Hanover. The back room library has a really cool feel. The beer and drinks are great and the food was surprisingly really really good. We got the mac and cheese and the nachos and they were both excellent. Great place for drinks and also food. Will definitely be back. read more

Two stars is kind because I don't want to be a jerk. In the past I sent a salmon entrée back because it had gone bad. Last week I returned my 18$ lobster roll for the same reason. Also the Bloody Mary was embarrassing. Pro tip: if you're a server, don't charge for food that gets sent back. It puts your patrons the position to be the bad guy. read more

I believe for an Irish restaurant it is below average. The closest thing they had that resembled Irish food was the fish n chips however they were barely one step above Gordon's frozen fish sticks. The puff pastry chicken pot pie was very disappointing. There is more chicken in a single chicken McNugget then there was in this dish. When I sat down and read the menu I was perplexed as to why an Irish restaurant would have a Thai noodle bowl, Asian skewers and southwest egg rolls on its menu. There were no bangers and mash or even shepherds pie. This place may be great for the bar and drinks however I don't recommend it for an Irish food experience. Staff was friendly though. read more

True story, I broke my tooth at Murphy's. I was having a decent Cesar salad, and laughing, and somehow confused eating and laughing and bit down on my fork and broke off the bottom of my front tooth (yes, I have two front teeth, if you really need to know, it's the one on the right). I'll always remember Murphy's, and the dental bills. I ate and drank at Murphy's for four years, in part because there isn't much choice around Hanover. The food is decent, it's a sort of "American bar" menu and it works well. I never had anything I didn't like there. The bar is really small and that I don't like; we tried having get togethers and there just wasn't enough room. The price is average, the food slightly above average, the drinks average priced. I ordered a murph burger and sadly they kept the name of their namesake burger and totally changed the recipe. It used to have crisp fried onions and sauce- now it has an egg and pulled pork on a burger. It was good, but not what I wanted or have been craving since March. :( read more

I visited Murphy's thinking it was just a bar. After sitting down at the bar, I was handed a menu. At 7PM, the bar was half full and seating was filling up. The place peaked around 9:30 and died out after that to the people who only are there to drink. The beer selection rocked. Great selection of local and imported beer. Bartender was friendly, nice and super gracious with my beer tasting before committing to one I wanted. I ordered the Albacore Tuna Salad which was pricey for Hanover but nothing compared to what you pay in big cities. It was THE BEST SALAD I've ever consumed. It's been 2 weeks since I've had it and I want that salad again. In fact, I'll let you in on a secret...I was there for a job interview and part of the reason I took the job and moved across country from San Francisco is so I can have that salad again every night of the week. Okay, that's not completely true but wow was this salad amazing! The home made croutons dipped in butter. OMG! Yeah, this place was amazing! Drove to visit friends in Vermont and stopped here on the way home. I'd seen that Travel + Leisure named Murph's burger one of America's best. Since it was on the way, we decided to find out if we agreed. "Best burger" is a tough category. I love a good pub burger, and this is definitely a well-made patty, mildly seasoned and cooked to your specifications (medium) but still giving it a nicely grilled outer layer. But burgers can be had anywhere, and Murphy's isn't creating a particularly unique culinary experience in most ways. The crispy shallots are batter-fried (imagine shallot onion rings), which was disappointing to me. I'd preferred simple sauteed shallots. The remoulade seemed homemade, with mild flavor and HUGE capers. They use decent bacon, too, yet they slap on a slice of yellow American. So close to Vermont and it's wonderland of cheese, this seems almost criminal. But the bun, from King Arthur Flour bakery I believe, was excellent. My companion felt that in spite of it all, the seemingly mundane ingredients came together for a burger that was greater than the sum of its parts. I loved the burger itself and the bun. If Murphy's was in my neighborhood, I'd definitely return, though I'd probably opt to order a burger with my own customized toppings. read more

Was surprised to find it empty on a Sunday night. After 30 mins there I realized why. The staff on Sunday night is terrible.

Went for an early dinner. The meals were wonderful and the service was good. Each dish was made with fresh ingredients and was simply and tasty. Our family is not big fan of salty food but Murphy's got the right balance in every dish. Besides the good food, they also had good beer selections. Owner stopped by and had a good chat with us. Very friendly and got lots of inside scoop of the neighborhood. Will definitely go back if possible. read more

Oh man, I though this place was your typical pub, but their food selections are out of this world. The food and beer were top notch quality and the owner was a funny guy. The only thing I have at fault with this place is their inability to "split" checks. It is 2018 and telling me that a computer cannot split checks on groups 4 or more is crazy. Other than that, the food and service was A+ all around. I'll come back but before I do, I'll be sure to hold a reality show where all my friends will have to compete in games and trivia to where only the top 3 friends can join me in order to accommodate the split check policy. Murphy's is a place where most Dartmouth/Tuck students hang out at. It's typically crowded, especially on Friday nights. I've tried their calamari and nachos appetizers. The calamari was a little chewy, but the hot peppers and spice made it enjoyable. The nachos were almost $16 (including chicken) and they weren't that great. The chicken was overcooked and the chips seemed a little stale. I've also had one of their seafood entrees (which was the "special of the day") that included mussels, clams, and shrimp with a side of rice and spinach. The mussels and clams were average, but I only had about 10 mussels, 2 clams, and 2 shrimp (that weren't even grilled) all for a ridiculous price of $27! The waiter even forgot to add shrimp to our entree until we questioned whether we were missing shrimp with our meal or not. Of course, the waiter didn't tell my boyfriend and I the price of the entree until we saw the bill. It also took over 30 min to get my food. The price of the food is overly expensive, the quality of the food is subpar, and you definitely won't get your money's worth for lunch or dinner. On the other hand, if you just want a place where you can drop by for a drink, then Murphy's would be the place to go. They have a decent list of beer on tap and also have a full bar for cocktails. read more

Absolutely tasteless food - ordered short ribs and fish, and they were brought in so quickly that it was clear - ribs had been pre-cooked and only heated up before serving. No structure, no taste, like chewing cardboard with calories. Asked for fresh ground pepper - the restaurant did not have that. Wow! Unpleasant and almost hostile hostess, the place was half-empty and stayed that way all evening, but she wouldn't give an outside table, kept them "for reservations" until closing time. We were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The calamari was very large and tasted great, and was surprisingly large. The mac n' cheese entre that I ordered was also very big, although I could not finish it and there was too little cheese, so the bottom ended up tasting like plain pasta. The salmon entree was also good, although the sauce on top gave it a strange flavor so we had to take it off. The reason this was only a 4 star was because the dishes and silverware they gave us was dirty and not cleaned. There were food remnants on all of it, which was somewhat unsanitary. My wife and daughter went here for dinner as her first term at Dartmouth was coming to an end. We had eaten here a few times and it has been hit and miss on food and service. Tonight was a big miss so decided to leave feedback. The food was sent back multiple times being raw and finding a dark curly hair on the food. Service was just ok and more interested in other groups. The owner comped the food but called my family first timers very loudly as he walked away from the table. Great bar, somehow simultaneously casual and upscale (a trend in Hanover). The drinks are great, I have had many of their special cocktails and their basics (gin and tonic, rum and coke) are reasonably priced. I tend to get the cheaper items on the menu as they do pub fare much better than their "fancy" items. The taco's are delicious, and 3 for $14 including a side means a date for 2 with drinks comes out to $50-60. All in all, a classic bar and a Hanover institution. read more

First time visit - we were very disappointed with our experience which was surprising based on the reviews. Sirloin burger was bad, the fish in the fish and chips was ok. My husband and I were on an anniversary getaway , and we were in the process of looking for a local Chinese place , when we saw this one instead. Great atmosphere , awesome food and dessert to die for !! I had a vegan dish , because it sounded interesting (I'm not vegan at all ) It was very good. I also tried their autumn pumpkin bisque . OH! That is what I love about fall !!We both had the homemade pumpkin cheesecake YUM!!!! Our server was Julie and she was upbeat ,knowledgeable and very accommodating . I had ordered a White Claw , but neglected to ask for the flavor. It turned out to be cherry (which I do not care for ) and she took it back with no problem ! This is a small, antique looking pub with pretty good food. I ordered their Murph Burger with a side of fries. The burger was quite good (but not amazing) and the fries were just O.K. Our waitress though was very friendly and our food didn't take too long to come out. Overall, not too bad. I would give it 3.5 if I could! read more
