This is a small, antique looking pub with pretty good food. I ordered their Murph Burger with a side of fries. The burger was quite good (but not amazing) and the fries were just O.K. Murphy's is a local college hangout and was busy when we came in. We were told that the kitchen was about 30 minutes out which I appreciate, one group decided to leave and we decided to stay, it was quicker in the end. We ordered the sirloin burger and the "murph" burger both done medium one with fries and the other with Mac and cheese. Both burgers came out a little over cooked but they tasted great. The fries tasted good like any hand cut fry but they were very under cooked. As for the mac and cheese it was nice and creamy but lacked flavor, we were hoping for more from it since we were craving mac and cheese that day. The beer selection is good as you would expect from Irish pub in a college town. The wait staff was also good, a little wait at the beginning but nothing bad. Just some missteps and some mis cooked items, all and all the food tasted good, I would go back and try other things just not the mac and cheese. read more

Stopped in at Murphy's on the way home from Canada with the family and I will say the whole experience was positively delightful. The owner of the establishment, Nigel, was an absolute pleasure to talk to and the conversation we had with him throughout our meal was invigorating and insightful. Our server was fantastic and his beer and food recommendations were superb. We had the calamari, burgers and fish and chips which were all great. Every college town seems to have a place like this - dark wood, not too much seating and bathrooms in the basement. Murphy's replicates this kind of pub experience in their own manner (polished casual) featuring local ingredients and a decent tap list. My party of six got the booth at the front window, which was great for people watching and a level of privacy. The air circulation wasn't the best, but our waitress did her best to keep our ice water glasses filled. Pepperocini was a nice addition to the calamari appetizer and the house made vegetarian burger got the job done, with thick-cut sweet potato fries. Two of my colleagues got the Murph burger, which certainly was hearty including thick-cut bacon. With the Harpoon Vermont Brewery nearby, you can always expect to have their flagship IPA on draft, along with another seasonal selection - in the summer it was UFO White. College bar/pubs can be considered to be a dime a dozen, but Murphy's represents the category well. You can get a filling meal or simply stop in for a pint, but either way the central location makes this a solid, convenient option for Dartmouth students, staff or visitors. Loved the decor - like you were in a library, so it fit the academic ambiance of Dartmouth. Unfortunately, food was a bit disappointing and service was pretty slow. Granted, it was graduation weekend...but still wasn't expecting to wait almost 30 minutes for food to arrive. The high point: the wings. The low point: the crabcakes (cooked too long so they tasted burnt). Restaurant options are limited in Hanover, but you don't have to twist my arm to keep me going back to Murphy's! After several visits, I've never been disappointed. Each meal is great; you get a fab Irish-gastro-pub-meets-locallly-focused-American cuisine. Standouts include the Trio as a starter (the roasted red pepper feta dip is an almost religious experince), the Murph Burger as a main (how could you pass on the namesake?!), and the Eggs Benedict for brunch (mmmmm, eggs benny). Ate at Murphy's with our daughter and some of her friends - 6 people. I asked for a quieter table and they gave up this terrific table in a very quiet nook - perfect! Menu was big enough to satisfy the meat-eaters and vegetarians alike! Also, good for sharing. I wish Murphy's was in my town. I feel like I'm back in England when I'm here, with the cozy decor (walls of books). Not to mention the bartender and the customers often have English accents. The specials are always fabulous. Most recently I had some ravioli with baked ricotta underneath and rabbit on top. This was my first time having rabbit and it was quite tender and tasty. Good selection of beers, including Switchback from Burlington, VT, which can only be found on tap so is always a welcome selection. If I lived closer, I would attend their beer dinners, which include a talk by a brewer served with several courses. read more

My husband and I have dined here twice. Our lunch experience (we both ordered the murph burger) was good, though the service was slow and inattentive at 2pm. The problem came when we went back two weeks later for dinner. At first the owner tried to seat us in the bar area, which was obviously inappropriate because there were tons of screaming college kids in the bar and we're an older couple. We asked to be taken to the back dining room instead. After waiting for 10 minutes for our waitress to arrive we ordered (fish and chips for my husband, lobster salad taco for me). My "taco," when it came, was in fact more like a lobster salad gyro in pita bread. The sandwich was mostly bread with two tablespoons of filling. It was served with french fries that were limp and soggy and topped with some oily goo. When I asked the waitress why the dish had been billed as a "taco" when there was nothing taco-like about it. She gave me a non-answer and walked off. We waited 20 minutes subsequently for our check -- I with my soggy lobster pita and my husband with his slightly more palatable fish. On the way out I asked the owner nicely about the "taco" issue, and he said that it was a good point and he'd change the menu to be more descriptive. Two months later, it's still a "lobster taco" on the menu. read more

Mmm another Hanover classic. This place is always pretty popping every time that I've showed up. The burger is a popular favorite. I went for their seafood special which was amazing last time. It was scallops on a bed of mashed potatoes served with brussels sprouts and pork belly. Like what ?? How did they even execute that one so flawlessly? It was delicious. I also got a side of the mac and cheese which was also a great choice if you don't want to commit to an entire bowl of mac and cheese as your dinner meal. Service is extremely slow and lackluster though. There could be pretty significant improvement in this area. I think the problem is that they have so much business that it probably just gets overwhelming for them to deal with all the different parties. It took us way too long to flag down our waiter and to get her attention. The wait for the food wasn't too bad. The only efficient part of our meal was when we were paying, probably because they really needed the seating capacity we were using since we were a pretty big group. They did split our check though which was really nice of them since we were a table of 10ish or so. tldr; always a solid place for good food, service could be better read more

Murphy's is an interesting sort of place. The inside is very old eclectic environment that seems very much in line with ye olde Dartmouth. Under most circumstance I wouldn't have gone to Murphy's as Molly's is my tried and try favorite, but I decided to give it a try - after all they just remodeled. We decided to have fried calamari, a Cuban and a Bison burger. The calamari was chewy, but that is to be expected as I am a seafood snob (growing up on the coast will do that). The bison burger was okay, but is no match for Molly's Kobe burger. My fiance reports the Cuban was decent. The service was a sporadic and disjointed at best. The waiter seemed a little disinterested and was not very attentive. I can't speak to the Murphy's as a drinking establishment, but it is probably a better bar then restaurant. My recommendation would be to go to Molly's where you can draw on the table, get good appetizer bread, and eat the best potato skins ever. read more

I have been going here for 25 years. Tonight I went in for a few beers and dinner. As usual the place was clean, service great. Attentive wait staff. I had the pot pie which tasted wonderful but was about four bites of actual food. For $19. When the waiter handed me the menu after I had finished and asked if I wanted more food that was an obvious sign it is a minimal amount of food... it should have had more than four carrots and three pieces of chicken. They are gouging people and I may go elsewhere next time. I am now headed to a different restaurant for what I guess is a second dinner after spending more than $40 there for two beers and a few bites of food. read more

Simon took very good care of us. Specials sounded fantastic, but we opted for quick and easy with Murphy burgers. Quite tasty. Cooked spot on med rare. Sweet potato fries are thick wedges resulting in mushy texture. Regular fries, though, are great. Respectable draught beer selection with rounded craft styles, and some decent wines on the list. Fantastic dessert. Chocolate flourless cake is rich and satisfying. Great to share. A solid dining choice in a comfortable, cozy environment with an attentive and amiable staff. read more

My friend and I came here twice in one day (don't judge, haha). The first time I got the mussels two ways and the second time I got Murphy's burger. The mussels were delicious... They provide you with a tiny fork to eat them with and bread to dip in the soup. The fried shallots are the best part of the burger, which was cooked exactly how I wanted. Very cozy place to have retreated to for lunch during the winter I visited Hanover. We sat at a high table next to a mirror, which was nice, but it was such an uncomfortable tight squeeze that we had to climb onto our chairs one at a time since they were backed up against a wall. I ordered The Murph' Burger, which came with American cheese, remoulade, shallots, and North Country Smokehouse bacon. It was satisfactory, but ordinary, especially for the price point. The bacon and remoulade were good, but the flavor of the Angus beef patty was a bit lacking this time. I think I actually liked the hand-cut fries the most. I've been eating at Murphy's for years and have always enjoyed it. A good mix of pub food and fancier fare. The recent renovation looks nice and the new Chef has really elevated the menu and the food quality. Lots of local meats and produce are used now, which I appreciate. My favorite dish there has always been the steak tips and tonight they came with fiddle heads, a veg I've never had before--they were delicious. That staff was friendly and my drink was kept full. I had high hopes for my meal at Murphy's... i ordered the soup of the day (butternut squash cider) to begin and the Crispy Tofu Pad Thai as my entree. The soup was thin and warm, and gave me the sensation of drinking a bottle of vinegar. It was so more cider than squash, and after a couple of spoonfuls, I couldn't drink anymore. The pad Thai arrived shortly after and although it was a generous helping, the sauce was bland and the tofu was not crispy. While there were slivers of carrots and red pepper, the brown sauce overpowered everything else and made the plate looked tan. If there was anything excellent about Murphys, it was the service - my waiter had the greatest smile and wanted to make my experience the best. The food wasn't terrible but it was certainly less than something to write home about. read more

I love the decor/atmosphere of Murphy's - very cozy. Ordered the: Harpoon IPA Sauteed Mussels (mussels were tasty, but the broth left a sharp after taste). Chili (delicious and definitely warmed me up after coming in from the cold weather outside). Lobster Roll (I expected it to be warm, but turns out it was designed to be a cold roll. Very generous helping of lobster and tasty. Really enjoyed the fries and the cole slaw that accompanied it). Service was good. Waiter was attentive and cheerful. This weekend, we took another trip up to the ol' V-T to celebrate a few birthdays, among them, my father-in-law's special day! We decided to take him out to lunch to celebrate, before heading to a special little lady's fourth birthday bowling party! We decided on Murphy's On The Green, in Hanover, NH. This pub-like establishment is located on the main drag of Dartmouth's little college town, and it sure is delicious! They were doing a helluva business on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm, but they were able to find us a table for four rather quickly. A few minutes passed, and the waitress came over to take our drink order and recite the specials, which consisted of Salmon Chowder and a Red-Pepper Fettuccine entree (mmm, more on that later because that's what I decided to order!) Since a toast was in order, we all ordered drinks, and I opted for a glass of white wine, the Glass Mountain Chardonnay, out of a vineyard in California. I found it to be crisp, and reminiscent of apples. The description also described notes of butterscotch, which I think I tasted when I concentrated on it. When we had all made our decisions, we placed our order. I decided to start with the Grilled Heart of Romaine Caesar. I don't see this on a menu all that often but when I do, I tend to lean towards ordering it. I know you are thinking, grilled lettuce? But yes sir, GRILLED LETTUCE. It's delicious. The grill pulls a smokiness from the lettuce that you wouldn't expect, and the heat wilts the leaves slightly, giving it what I can only describe as a heartier consistency. The romaine heart was drizzled with a fresh Caesar dressing, as well as parmesan flakes and garlicky croutons. The plate was decorated with a lovely red pepper aioli as well as an accompaniment of kalamata olives. I don't normally think of olives as a garnish for a Caesar salad, but in this case, the saltiness of the olives went really well with the smokiness of the grilled lettuce. For my entree, as I mentioned earlier, I decided to go with the special of the day. The base for this delicious meal was a plate of red-pepper fettuccine from Vermont Fresh Pasta (and you know how I feel about fresh pasta). Check them out at their website, and if you can find their products in a store near you, I highly recommend giving them a try. They are seriously delicious. On with the dish, right? :) This delicious, fresh fettuccine was topped with a bacon and cream sauce, as well as grilled littleneck clams. The clams were a great size (I was expecting much smaller), they were perfectly cooked and fantastically sweet! There was a lovely bacon flavor to the sauce, and the bits of bacon throughout added a great little crunch to each bite. The whole plate was really very well seasoned and totally delicious. We've visited this restaurant before, and I'm always thrilled with my meal, but this was an especially delicious visit! I think I chose a nice pairing between the wine, the salad and the entree, and I was so satisfied when we walked out that door. I've been to many different incarnations of Murphy's going back to the early '90s. I have to say the current incarnation is the least effective and enjoyable of all of them I've seen. First, the place can't decide what it wants to be. It looks like an upscale Irish pub, but it also boasts both TVs and a menu that aspires to fancy bistro fare. The mishmash of different seating choices (bar, high-top tables, regular dining tables) makes the small place quite cramped. The bar is a bit small, and it can't quite decide if it's going for Irish pub or the kind of place the Wall Street crowd hits after work in NYC. The beer selection is OK, but not great. As mentioned above, the menu aspires to a higher calling than is usually seen in a pub setting. It's another of Murphy's split-personaliity issues where it can't decide if it's a pub or bistro. The food is usually quite good in preparation, but it tends toward the overly fanciful. Worst of all, it's highly overpriced and the portions are tiny. Overall, these are the reasons I avoid Murphy's whenever possible. I tend to only go there when I'm meeting others and they've chosen the locale; for some reason, I seem to know a lot of people who like Murphy's for reasons they're never able to articulate and that I'm unable to discern. If you want upscale American food with some European flare, Canoe Club and even Jesse's do it far better. If you want pub grub or a good burger, Molly's does it better and far cheaper. If you want a place to have a drink and not feel claustrophobic, Salt Hill is a much better option. While Murphy's isn't the worst place in the world, I just can't find a reason to go there. It's a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none of a bar/restaurant. If they narrowed their focus and stopped trying to be a little of everything, they might actually hit on something that worked. read more

The menu uses some local and organic things and is a bit more creative than your average town pub-ish restaurant. I had a salad that was simple and tasty. Excellent traditional pub experience with friendly and attentive service. My colleagues and I dined here after a day of number crunching. They have a respectable selection of beers on tap and really excellent food. We started with a plate of cheese and sausage with some sliced baguette. I did not find the sausages terribly exceptional, but the Vermont cheddar was excellent. My colleagues enjoyed their fish entrees (specials of the day) and I loved my grilled salmon with polenta "moons" (basically polenta shaped like moons and fried). Portions were a little smaller than what I'd normally expect at a pub but certainly very adequate. This restaurant was highly recommended to us and I'd likewise recommend it to others. Atmosphere is very British pub-style with old wooden chairs and tables and vintage art and advertising. Service was great- definitely exceeded my expectations of pub service. read more

Murphy's is a pretty solid choice for Hanover dining and is pretty much your direct alternative to eating at Mollys. They both offer American style cuisine (with other influences of course ) at reasonable prices with good beer selections. It has your standard mix of local brews like Harpoon, Longtrail, Magic Hat, and Switchback. It has a prime mainstreet location right next to Left Bank books and is hard to miss. My favorite items at Murphy's are their Nachos, which in my opinion are the best available in the UV. Forget the "Mexican" places Gusanoz or Margaritas and their sad attempts at nachos. Leave it up to the Irish/American place to have the best nachos around with a nice layer of bean dip being built upon by a perfectly crisp chips and a nice blend of cheeses + jalapeños + tomatoes on top. Other things I can attest to being great at Murphy's are their buffalo burgers which I like Smoke House style which comes with BBQ sauce, bacon and caramelized onions. They have excellent options for fries, original or sweet potato. Both are delicious. Their fish tacos are an OK NE rendition of this California dish, and the fish and chips are better than Molly's based on better fries along with a larger portion of haddock/cod. For vegetarians their falafel wrap is marginally better than the already good one at Lous and is a great choice. The nacho's I raved about are also vegetarian if you just opt out of the additional chili topping they will offer you. They also have several other veggie entrée options if you don't just want a wrap such as Gnocchi, veggie mac+cheese, and an eggplant layered vegetable napoleon. Other interesting tidbits are Murphy's are the brass plates people can purchase and have hung on the wall to remember their favorite seating location, along with a kids menu that comes out on a soccer ball with the menu items written out on the panels. Not sure how hygienic that is, but it is cute! I inevitably find myself coming back to Murphy's, and enjoy it as being a safe local standby. read more

Our server informed us that the chef had created a new menu and they had just started serving it last Thursday. We decided to try the buttermilk breaded calamari served with a balsamic reduction, horseradish cream penne with croutons, and the pork belly. Decided to stop by on a business trip and my suggestion to you is to go elsewhere. Murphy's seems to be rundown, wanna be Irish pub. Although they do have the wooden paneling going for them, that really is about all they have going for them. I had a burger while my coworker had a chicken wrap turned into a chicken sandwich. Both were very bland and needed some flavor plus the price was a little absurd for what little we were getting. The only thing good about my meal were the mashed potatoes and gravy. Service was slow and hard to find. We sat there for a while before we finally had to find her in order to pay our bill. Restrooms: They are downstairs to the right, right as you enter the doorway. The women's restroom only has two stalls and one stall was out of toilet paper while the other stall's door didn't shut. Again, what can you expect when the place is so run down. read more

Murphy's is an easy fallback choice when you're looking to eat out in Hanover. Depending on what events are happening at Dartmouth though, you could easily have to wait an hour for a table here though, so make reservations in advance! The food is ok. I mean, the burger is pretty good (but it's a burger, they shouldn't be able to mess it up that easily) and I usually get their ceasar salad with chicken for a light meal. But in general, this place is pretty overpriced for the quality of food they sell. $14 for a burger? $14 for some lettuce, croutons, and strips of chicken? I find myself only eat here if it's with a group, because they've got some larger tables. read more

My wife had the duck confit - she said it was the best duck ever (she didn't share any, so I'll take her word for it). Easy, moderately-priced, and less pretentious than their neighbor Canoe Club. Hard to beat the location on Main St. in Hanover... Recently grabbed a bite and was impressed with the freshness of the salad, the price of the beer, and the overall friendly environment. The chef and owner care about quality and I think you will find that it comes through in what you eat.
