A wonderful surprise! My son and I stopped in on a whim for dinner. We drove up from Boston to attend a concert at the Opera House, and since Salt Hill Pub is right across the street, it just made sense. We were promptly seated by a pleasant hostess, and greeted by our waiter Hunter (who couldn't have been nicer). The atmosphere is exactly what you might expect: family-friendly, BUSY, and loud in the best way with the sounds of folks having a good time and great food. Speaking of the food, OMG! I heard the onion rings were off the chart, and they are: giant crispy rings with soft onions, and a breading that holds the ring together but is crunchy, light and amazing. Easily the best rings I've ever had. We ordered delicious burgers which were cooked perfectly, and totally balanced with veg and condiments. It really was a perfect burger. The tots were dusted with cheese and rosemary powder. Incredible. It's not really the kind of spot we are able to get to on the regular, but if we are up in that neck of the woods again, it's a must-do. If I were a local, you can bet I would be a frequent flyer. Salt Hill Pub is like the unofficial town hall of Lebanon. The food is very good and so is the beer. This pub is where the town - and those from miles around - gather for a Guinness, a meal with their people or a dinner with their kids. Food that is unforgettable here: the Guinness Stew, sweet Thai chili wings, a whale o' fish and chips, gigantic onion rings, the hand cut fries and the nachos loaded with cheese (and/or black beans or pulled pork), the marble rye bread (as its own entity with butter but usually served with the Reuben), the jalapeño cornbread, the hummus platter and the peanut butter pie. These items I've mentioned are foods i love to come back to. They are remarkable, flavorful and never disappoint. Not to single one of these menu items out but the nachos are soooo good and it's because of the delicious chili. So, yeah, the chili is on this reliably fabulous list, too, then. Oh and about the onion rings: see my video for how oversized these onion rings are! They are equally as delicious as impressive and the horseradish sauce is so flavorful. The burger with bacon jam, cabot white cheddar and house maple mayo is the one I like the most. Their Tater Tots are awesome. The Jameson Honey Salmon and Stuffed Sweet Potato entrees are delicious. I can't say the same for the plain pub mac as the flavor is unremarkable vs. deeply cheesy and rich. Order their pub mac and cheese with chicken and Gorgonzola or BBQ pulled pork. The portion of the mac and cheese is gigantic. If you are really seeking the comfort of warm cheese, go for the Vermont Maple Turkey griller with bacon and maple mayo on sourdough. It has all the goodness of an oversized grilled cheese sandwich. If i closed my eyes and ate it - not knowing what it was - I would think it was a grilled cheese with ham and/or bacon. It's that delicious. The sweetness of the maple mayo doesn't come through, as it should, however. I'd like to really taste the syrup but I'm guessing many others love it just the way it is/aren't sugary sweet people. I've listed the things you can't go wrong with and menu items I didn't mention are still reliably good, but less remarkable or I've just personally never tried them. There are still a few menu items I am curious about, ie the Reuben and a few of the salads that are likely very good, as well. Their draft brews are awesome and I love pulling up for a Guinness. In many states, outside of the Upper Valley and New England, it's not easy - though not impossible - to find a bar with Guinness on draft. There is a rotating selection of weekly local beers and cocktails, here, plus they serve a room-temperature hand-pulled cask beer. No longer on the menu but possible to still order: the adult Guinness milk shake with Bailey's Irish Cream. It's serious as in the ice cream never drowns out the alcohol flavor. And once it all melts together, you know you're indulging. What I like most about Salt Hill are its people: the staff and customers. The locals are mostly bar flies that keep to themselves. There is a charm to that but I found it's largely impossible to chat many of them up. They are obviously good people, just largely there to exist and maybe drink and usually not to shoot the breeze or spin a yarn. The staff are always efficient and most are friendly. My biggest complaint about Salt Hill is that they don't serve brunch. You can get a Celtic Egg which is a boiled egg wrapped in ground sausage breaded and deep-fried. Never tried it. But I want bangers and mash with eggs up and some hard liquor for brunch, please. Dining outside is gorgeous with good weather. There is plenty of room and the staff are friendly. Don't miss the live music here and trivia on Sunday nights. Also St. Patrick's Day is a mad house here, of course, and fun for the type of rowdy, good-humored people I can't find anywhere else in this town ... on any other day. What do I expect?! I probably need to go to Beantown -- vs. Lebanon -- for these types. ;) read more

After a half day at the Lebanon Brew Fest, we needed a relaxing "Linner" - too late for lunch but early for dinner. So we came up here and were absolutely delighted. For starters, this Salt Hill has an urban feel, almost European, being next to Colburn Park with a side street blocked to traffic and people ambling by. Then, part of the main street is blocked to traffic and in its place, about 20 feet wide of outside tables and people enjoying themselves. Such a wonderful ambiance. We were tired from the sun so we actually went inside and we were sat by a main window. Service was superb, with my Felafel wrap being tasty and great presentation. And although we didn't have any beer - we were actually "beered out" from the event at the park, we delighted ourselves to see the great menu they had and decided to return soon. We arrived at Salt Hill Pub about 40 minutes before closing time after a long, hard day of driving. They greeted us warmly and made sure we got our food order in before the kitchen closed. Not only that, when we suggested that we could take our order to go, they said "absolutely not...take your time." Great service! We ordered several apps, including the giant pretzel, bean nachos, tater tots, and hummus plate. The serving sizes were ample, enough so that we boxed some of the nachos for the next day. The pretzel was exactly what one expects from a pretzel...warm, slightly salty, and served with cheese and pub sauces. The tots had a delicious rosemary and parmesan cheese topping and came with the mustardy pub sauce. They were great with or without the sauce. The nachos were loaded with beans, cheese, pico, and sour cream. The chips held up nicely. Our healthy hummus plate had pita, olives, feta, falafel, cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce. We ordered wings, fish and chips and Guinness Stew. The fish was crispy and not greasy, well seasoned and reminiscent of the fish and chips I have had in Ireland. It's funny because this place is called Salt Hill, but this was some of the blandest mac and cheese I've ever tasted. Another thing that's funny is this place is a pub with a full bar, but they don't have drink menu. I've been here several times since moving out here about four years ago, and the food has always been ok. Today though, it really felt like whoever was cooking just did not care. One of the most fundamental things a cook should know is that pasta needs to be cooked in salted water, as salty as the ocean. That is the only time you'll ever be able to give it any flavor, and if the pasta has no flavor then the entire dish will be bland. The sauce has potential but without any seasoning, it's a complete waste. Something so simple really does make such a huge difference. Aside from the pub mac and cheese, I also ordered the poutine tots. They tasted fine, tots were crispy, but there was too much cheese and everything looked like it had just been thrown onto the plate with no regard for presentation. I know this is a pub, but bar food doesn't have to look sloppy. The best part about the visit was the server, I think her name was Sofie? She was very sweet and attentive. Unfortunately we had a big miss here. My husband often orders Reuben sandwiches when we eat out. They are his favorite. My lunch was just okay, nothing to talk about out there. He said it was the worst Reubin he's ever had-what little corned beef there was in it had been cooked on a flat top first so it was curly and fatty. There was barely any cheese, sauerkraut or sauce in it. I was mad he didn't say anything (he barely ate half) because it could have been fixed or replaced. You lost us. No way. Newport is soooo much better and I honestly never thought I would say that. Lebanon has gone SO FAR DOWN HILL. Frys are cold, hard, inedible. Fish was undercooked, soggy, cold, the breading was literally wet and sticky. Wings were over fried and hard, couldn't get a single bite of meat off of 90% of them. Sprouts were burnt and bland. Burgers are ehhh like 5 guys beats them all day and we aren't picky eaters. Idk thats just been our experiences the last several times we have ordered and paid the price of a good meal and received crap food and even worse customer service. The work ethic of this new generation has got me mind boggled. Its everywhere. Nobody actually cares about the quality of service or anything anymore. The old salt hill was amazing! It's sad to see these places go so far down hill. I'm someone whos been in the Upper Valley Community for almost 2 decades at this point and frankly I'm just so beside myself how bad it has become. My wife and I are always on the lookout for a good Irish pub in our travels. On a scenic drive, we stopped in as we both got excited about an Irish pub. After going into the host location, we stood there for several minutes even after one of the hostesses came to the station and didn't even acknowledge our presence. We were then greeted by the host, and we seated outside without being asked if we preferred inside or outside. The menu has a decent selection of food. However, it was all simerly priced. Which is not a bad thing, but ten dollars for one Scotch egg is a bit excessive. I ordered the Bangers and Mash, which was on point. My wife ordered Bob's VT Maple Griller. It was good enough to have it again, but not something to be sought out. Our server Ashley was a shining star, friendly, personalable, and did a fantastic job for having to work tables both inside and outside. 4 stars for Asley. St. Patty's Day was the last straw. Horrible customer service. Disorganized and inconsistent service. Hostess is too inexperienced to handle this crowd. A lot of waitstaff is also too inexperienced.
