Their menu has what you'd expect from a classic diner, prices are cheap, and service is quick! We got the Country Style Eggs and Patty Melt. Both lacked basic seasonings like salt & pepper. If I was rating off the food alone, I'd give it a 3/5. The home fries in the Country Style Eggs could've been crispier and adding hot sauce definitely saved this a bit. The biscuit we got with it was homemade and so delicious. It was warm, buttery, and satisfying. The Patty Melt was a bit dry and desperately needed a sauce. I used ketchup and asked for pickles which helped. The rye bread was surprisingly not dry and grilled nicely with butter. It was definitely a heavy meal but we needed it after a long drive. It's not the kind of place where you'll have an amazing meal but it'll do the job at a super affordable price.

Once we walked up to the counter, though, hospitality left much to be desired. I do not like giving bad reviews, and I understand that running a business is tough, but this was an eyebrow-raising experience. We were left standing at the counter for several minutes unacknowledged, despite the fact that there were two people behind the counter. No one even said "we'll be right with you." Once the woman behind the counter finally was able to help us, her entire demeanor said we were inconveniencing her. We ordered the chicken pesto panini, a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, a blackberry lemonade refresher, and a turkey club. We did not receive a receipt and the girl walked away from the register before the transaction was even finished processing. We sat in the dining area and waited for twenty minutes. A member of our party went to politely check the status of our food since we had been waiting for some time for sandwiches. She was informed that the restaurant next door "got busy." Assumably they are sharing a kitchen? I'm not entirely sure what that meant. When we eventually received our order, the same girl who took our order brought our food. She brought out a box of napkins and silverware and threw them on the table. The food was nothing particularly special. The pesto chicken was so dry it was actually hard. The turkey club ended up just being a turkey sandwich with no bacon. The blackberry lemonade refresher tasted like sour mix. I was very disappointed in this place that I was hoping to really like. I will not go back and I will not recommend it to anyone. If a business would like to acquire patronage and keep people returning, the staff might want to treat customers like they actually want them there in the first place.

We found the Elf in the Oak on Yelp and once we saw the menu, we knew we had to give it a try. The Elf in the Oak is nestled on Rt 414. If you're not actively using a GPS, you may pass it by. It's not a large place by any means, but there's more than enough seating indoors and out. We went on a Friday morning, so there wasn't a wait and we received our food quickly. We both wanted 'the Spicy' and I have to admit, it's one of the best egg sandwiches I've ever had, which is high praise coming from someone who once worked at a popular bagel joint on Long Island. If we lived locally, we'd definitely go back, but I hope if you're looking for a quick casual brunch place to grab a bite, you consider visiting the Elf In The Oak.

The schnitzel sandwich was also very good. The fries, at $8 as a side were not worth it, I would have rather ordered another sandwich than got two sides of fries. The chips were also almost flavorless, except that of 99% fresh oil. The kids grilled cheese was American cheese, and thus, imho, was not very good. One of my kids took a bite and didn't like it either. Ambiance: simple, nice view of the lake. Service: friendly staff. Tl;DR: I'll be back, but won't order sides or the grilled cheese.

But...we got there around 12:00 and there were several people in there but also multiple tables open. The hostess ignored us and went straight to the people that just walked in after us (it was obvious we got there first)- then she didn't even address us or greet us... so we picked out a seat and then menus were brought to us. The guy behind the counter came to get our order- he seemed kind of standoffish. I noticed we also got a different presentation of food with chips in a paper bag rather than plated with our food like the others? The food seemed to be good but honestly was overshadowed by the uncomfortable feeling we were being treated differently? We were the only people of color during that time- and all of us felt like that could've been a factor... Otherwise, I try to stay impartial- so the vibe was cute and the food was good- but the experience was not comfortable
