I got this chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. Best gravy ever.

While visiting some folks in Harlowton they took me to dinner over in Martinsdale. It was AMAZING! Food, derive and ambiance were just perfect. Worth the drive! The owner is very nice.

The NYStrip I ordered had the best flavor of any steak I've had, and I've eaten in the best steakhouses in NY City. I'm going back, and taking a hunting buddy. Excellent service, delicious meal, and the atmosphere of a family run restaurant in rural Montana. Go out of your way to stop here. Well worth it.

Both visits have been positive overall, with excellent steaks, very good service, and several memorable dishes. That said, our most recent experience fell a little short of what I would expect from one of Bozeman's premier upscale steakhouses in terms of atmosphere. We had a 5:45pm reservation and were seated in a comfortable booth near the front of the restaurant, adjacent to the bar. We started with the fried calamari, which we had also ordered on our previous visit. Unfortunately, this time it was disappointing. There was far too much batter and very little actual calamari. Given how much we enjoyed it previously, perhaps this was simply an off night. The steaks, however, were excellent. My wife ordered the 8-ounce filet and I had the 16-ounce prime strip, both medium rare. Both arrived properly prepared and were flavorful, tender, and delicious. We shared the loaded baked potato and fried Brussels sprouts. The portions were generous and both sides were excellent, particularly the Brussels sprouts with caramelized bacon and small pieces of Granny Smith apple. Service was another highlight. Our waiter, Jordan, was attentive, prompt, and thorough throughout the evening. The additional wait staff were equally conscientious and friendly. My primary reservation concerns the atmosphere. Being seated next to the bar naturally meant more noise, and two nearby tables became particularly loud as the evening progressed. Obviously, a restaurant has limited control over the volume of individual guests, and I also take responsibility for not mentioning when making the reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary. Next time, I'll request a quieter table toward the rear of the dining room. I was also somewhat surprised by how casual the dress standards are. One of the things I appreciate about living in Montana is its relaxed, unpretentious character, and I certainly don't expect formal attire everywhere. My wife and I enjoy getting dressed up when indulging in fine dining, and while we don't expect everyone to arrive in suits and ties or dresses, we do anticipate a level of dress and decorum somewhat above everyday casual. J.W. Heist presents itself as an upscale steakhouse, and an evening for two can easily exceed $200. Seeing shorts and several baseball caps in the dining room--including backwards caps--detracts somewhat from the elevated atmosphere I would expect at that price point. Casual attire in the bar area makes perfect sense, but I think a modest dress standard in the main dining room would help distinguish the experience and make special occasions feel a little more special. Overall, we've enjoyed both of our visits. The quality of the steaks and sides has been excellent, the service has been consistently very good, and we would recommend J.W. Heist to others. We will likely return as well. I simply think a few refinements to the dining-room atmosphere would bring the overall experience more in line with the quality of the food, service, and price point.

After getting off work early yesterday, I decided to take the 3 1/2 hour ride on my motorcycle down to Wilsall. It was a long beautiful ride. Amazing mountain views. I finally arrived in Wilsall and found the bar & restaurant at about 3:30p. I walked in and was immediately greeted by 3 wonderful and energetic ladies who work at The Bank Bar & Vault Restaurant. I took a seat at a bar table, and ordered a delicious IPA from Outlaw Brewing. I looked over the menu and decided on a Wilsall Zinger burger, a Sweet Chili Chicken Taco, and a Blackened Fish Taco. The Wilsall Zinger burger is a lb burger with their house pickled jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, and jalapeño aioli. Comes with delicious fries. Price is $13.25. I added some lettuce & tomato ($0.50 each), and got the patty cooked slightly past rare. IT WAS PHENOMENAL!! Very impressed. Best burger in a looong time! Definitely recommend! All the meat comes from a local rancher, a mile up the road. Farm to table meat. Muddy Creek Ranch is the local supplier. The Sweet Chili Chicken Taco (2) is grilled chicken cooked with sweet chili sauce, in flour tortillas, with lettuce, tomato, and shredded cheese. Comes with chips & salsa. Price is $13.50. Absolutely delicious!! I recommend these! The Blacked Fish Tacos (2) are fried, battered cod, tossed in a house made Cajun dry rub on top of their house made coleslaw, in a flour tortilla. Comes with chips & salsa. Price is $15.00. These were good, but not my favorite. Usually I love fish tacos, but I didn't love these. For dessert, I ordered a slice of the Fresh Baked Fruit Forest pie. Has wild berries & rhubarb, I think. It's heated up and topped with Whip Cream. It was incredible!! I definitely recommend this pie. I also ordered the Tropical Crepe Cake, which are thin slices of crepe filled with a tropical flavored cream. This dessert pastry was perfect! Soft yet flaky, sweet yet light & mellow, and mysteriously refreshing after all the food eaten before it. Fantastic dessert! For dessert beverage, I ordered a Wilsall Watermelon Crawl cocktail. It is Whiskey, Watermelon Pucker, Lemonade, & Ginger Ale, and an orange slice on the rim. Very delicious and refreshing! I was planning to order one of their famous steaks as well, but unfortunately was too full, so I'll have to come back and get one next time. Muddy Creek Ranch Steaks are part of entrees, which are only served after 5pm. I could have ordered one as it was about 5:25p when I finished everything, but my belly was full. The atmosphere is very friendly & genuine, as small towns are. Great people. Decor is fantastic. A lot of country artwork, photography, statues/sculptures, and other western and bar decor. When I arrived at 3:30, it was pretty quiet and not busy. As time passed and dinner time came, it got busier and slightly more noise, but at a calm social level. If you're ever nearby, or even 3 1/2+ hours away, I HIGHLY recommend stopping in for a bite or a drink. You won't be disappointed. You'll be glad you did!!! TRUST ME! The Bank Bar & Vault Restaurant is now one of my top favorite Montana bars & restaurants. Thank you Bank Bar & Vault Restaurant for your hospitality and amazing food and drinks! I'll be back again soon for a steak!

Let me back up. When we arrived at 4:50 there was 1 table occupied and the waitress asked if we had a reservation. I thought that was cute. My nephew suggested people were just getting off work. He was right. By 5:10 the place was packed. Make a reservation or go early! We both ordered the Prime Rib. I ordered, and included a picture, of what they call the XTRA SMALL. It is huge (to me!). My nephew ordered the large (he's a master diesel mechanic and can EAT) and the waitress said "Are you sure?" He ended up taking 1/3 of his and 2/3 of mine home for leftovers. The meat was perfectly cooked, very tender and seasoned to perfection. Dinner comes with a soup and salad bar. I had a little clam chowder that was delicious. The salad bar was great and included hush puppies as big as softballs. Best I've ever had. Took 2 so I could give one to my nephew so he could experience it. Made him a fan. Dinner also includes your choice from an impressive list of desserts. My caramel apple cobbler is sitting in my hotel fridge waiting for me to get hungry for a late night snack. I leave tomorrow so I'm attacking that cobbler no matter what! Our waitress was funny and a delight and the whole place was very cozy.
