They ran out of mashed potatoes. The baked potatoes tasted microwaved and was super dry. The beet appetizer deserves a 5 on its own! This was probably the best ribeye steak I've ever had. It had an amazing thin crispy texture across most of the steak and was juicy and flavorful. I had heard that Montana was known for their beef quality and that was accurate AF. Their roasted beets were good too. We didn't expect there to be a goat cheese spread along the bottom of it and had to remove that since we didn't like goat cheese. TL;DR: classic steakhouse with some nice modern upgrades. Inconsistent cooks and somewhat inexperienced service leaves us a little disappointed Ordered: - 4 tomahawk steaks for the table all medium rare. 2 were perfect while 2 were overcooked. We mentioned it, and even showed it, to the server who essentially said "sorry, nothing we can do about it". The perfectly cooked ones were so good but the other two were just slowly picked at. - Tartare was forgettable. Not enough mustard in the mix and way too much bread. - Wedge salad was better than the table salad. Definitely enjoyed the bleu cheese dressing as it stands up next to the meat. - French onion soup was a sleeper. Get it. - Baked alaska could've been great but the server literally poured on half of the dish so while one side got toasted, the other was completely untouched. Party of eight on a Friday. It was a celebration and everyone was in a great mood. Downtown Bozeman was beautiful that evening. We were sat with in 10 minutes. We had reservations. We started with various apps and drinks. The servers were great. We had oysters fresh and Rockefeller, calamari, shrimp and fried deviled egg. Everything was served fast and fresh. The servers did a great job with explaining the menu. I ordered the short rib. Which is the definition of too much food. It was quite tasty and I finished it. I could have and should have taken half to go. I got to try a mate's the ribeye. Delicious. Tender, fatty and smokey. They did a great job. I'd give it 5-stars, it it weren't really over priced. We went for social hour (3-5). While the food was amazing, I do wish they had a few more items to choose from. We didn't realize you could not order anything but the four appetizers. So we ordered 3 of the 4 - oysters, bone marrow, and crab dipa skipped the shrimp cocktail. I had never had bone marrow. It was super tasty and the really nice thing was the pesto was not loaded with garlic. It just had great flavor. Our server took great care of us. We had a reservation, walked there from our hotel was seated within 5-7 min of arrival. Our server Lindsey was Excellent! She knows the menu, the history of the place, the staff and beyond. She was very detailed and knowing it was our 1st time she encouraged us to go see the kitchen, and we did! My 1st drink way strong, so I cut it back on #2. The food not as impressive as some steakhouses I've been too but not bad. The main issue we had was our steaks Filets were not hot, not even really warm. They had a smoky taste and I kept mine but my bf sent his back and was still unhappy and chose not to eat it. The grilled asparagus was hot & tasty, The whipped potatoes just that smooth & creamy. Not a fan of the French onion soup, had an odd color. Very greasy and did not taste like house made French onion soup, But it was bloody hot! The bread basket kinda disappointing looked like Hawaiian bread rolls, tasted like a potato roll. Nothing to rave about. Crème Brûlée dessert was good. Great spot for a large group of fellas for our last night in Bozeman. Really enjoyed the ambiance and decor - well appointed, dim, and very "Montana". Service was exceptional and on the ball all night, especially considering we had a party of 12, and the sommelier provided some great guidance. We got a little carried away with apps, but I'm happy to report they were all quite tasty: oysters and beef tartar. Followed it up with the 18oz. ribeye. My husband ordered the rib eye and half of the steak was gristle. I have never seen a steak like this at a price point of ninety-eight dollars. Really half the steak gristle? I didn't get to take a picture before the busboy took it away. I had the filet that was decent but I asked for a horseradish crust and was given some kind of sauce that looked like ranch didn't taste like horseradish at all. Don't get the corn pudding that was more corn bread-y than anything. The best part of the meal was the burrata and the only thing I would recommend. Save your money and go to Texas Roadhouse. We have had better steaks there for a lot less. I would say the service was good but at the end of the meal we were never asked about how it was and that Caesar Salad that wasn't touched was still on the bill. I live in Bozeman and Heist is my & my husband's favorite restaurant. We eat here about once a month and have never had a bad meal or experience. Every member of the staff is polite and professional. For the price - steak is pretty good, but missing that buttery melt in your mouth flavoring due to the steaks being wood fire grilled in lieu of sous vide and/or reverse seared. Fancy spot, go here to impress a client or for an anniversary etc. I had a bad experience there my first time. Didn't know *how* fancy it was, wanted a burger w a buddy but we ended up here. The hostesses were super nice, I felt dumb wearing like a flannel or something but they were like "it's no problem!" and sat us so we felt better. The waiter, however, was NOT cool with us. I told him we originally were looking for a burger but ended up here so just wanted a beer and like a strip steak (still a $50 steak). My buddy is sober so didn't drink. My husband and I went to J.W. heist for our wedding anniversary while visiting Bozeman. For the ladies- I had trouble figuring out what attire to wear here based on reviews/ tagged posts. I wore a linen maxi dress and didn't feel out of place. However, there was a wide range of attire from jeans and button ups to little black dresses. If you want to dress up, you'll fit right in! The atmosphere was great! The dimmed lighting, artwork and antique chandeliers really play into the prohibition era feel of this restaurant. There are quite a few tables inside, and it is a little loud. We ordered the nights special of a 20oz bone-in ribeye with added on mushrooms (that was cooked to our desired temperature and seasoned to perfection) as well as the creamy mashed potatoes and broccolini, all to split. It was plenty of food for two people. I really enjoyed the addition of the mushrooms with the steak, they were fresh and made the meal more cohesive. The butterscotch budino was phenomenal! The dessert menu all looked delicious, I would recommend saving room. Our waiter was extremely knowledgable of the menu and friendly. The only thing I felt that set off the fine-dining experience that this restaurant offers was the bussing of the tables. It seemed that as soon as we were almost finished was a plate- someone was immediately at our table asking to take it away, making the dinner feel a little rushed. The best dinner I've ever had! I got the caviar and the calamari with my family and was incredible. The service was TOP NOTCH! It was super cool inside I liked the old guns on the wall.
