We arrived right at the opening rush, so we expected things might take a while, but our food came out quickly and everything was cooked to perfection. Great craft beers, good food, hall & bar & patio, crowded soon after 5pm We had a very tasty meal at Montana Ale Works. We started with huge mildly-spicy chipotle pepperjack Housemade Tater Tots, crispy yet soft, soothed by a mild tomatillo ranch dipping sauce. And a luscious plate of Bison Potstickers, under a light layer of somewhat-spicy mango & garlic chili sauces, with asian slaw. The Fresh Asian Ramen salad dish was tender organic mixed greens, lightly-sautéed fresh seasonal carrots peas-in-tender-pods and thin brightly-flavored radish slices, tender light ramen noodles, and our chosen plum-glazed sesame-fried mild tofu (instead of chicken), with added sweet tender pan-fried Idaho rainbow trout filet, all under a light sesame-soy vinaigrette. Quite marvelous. The Kale Caesar, (Their Hail-Caesar joke?) was surprisingly good! By rolling the kale and cross-cutting it into thin strips, chiffonade-style, it was tender to the bite! I actually though it was baby kale! It was dressed with a sprinkling of shaved hard white cheeses, housemade sourdough croutons, and a light splashes of creamy caesar. They would add anchovies if you want. Tender juicy thick Monarch-Elk Burger is just a tiny bit game-y, adding a light tough of sweet extra flavor. It's covered with flavorful melted gruyère, a rich tomato jam, arugula, and a truffled porcini aioli. The bun was fresh and pillowy with a paper-thin egg-wash crust. Quite good! I will say that, other than the novelty, we didnt find a reason to come back to elk rather than a well-crafted beef burger. The lightly-beer-battered local, natural Hutterite Pork Chop Sandwich was tender and sweet like chicken, with honey mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. We savored the creaminess of their home-brewed sweet draft craft root beer. And of course we dove into their craft beer list. It was fun to taste the brightly colorful smooth somewhat-sweet Huckleberry Cream Ale from Portland's Hopworks Brewery. Lical huckleberries are hard-to-cultivate more-tart blueberry-relatives, which did become a recurring treat in one form or another on this trip. We shared two self-chosen craft-beer flights. Our favorite was the Bayern Brewing kölsch, a light golden color with soft yeasty malty flavors and just a touch of spiciness. And we loved a selection of their many IPAs. Our least-favorite brew was the Lockhorn Gallatin Grapefruit Mint Cider. The flavor was unusual, and it took me the whole flight-glass to come to terms with the tarragon-like undertone. We also bought some merch from their small retail area near the hosts' stand. Montana Ale Works' inside hall is vast, with a high ceiling and the cheerful roar of conversation. There's a large bar in the center of the room. And there's patio seating out front. At 5, they had said it wasnt crowded yet. We got there at 5:30pm on a weekday, and we had about a 20min wait for our table. Staff was welcoming and efficiently busy. We enjoyed our evening. We really enjoyed our time at Montana Ale Works! We got there right when they opened. Morgan was our server and she was fantastic! She took the time to explain the menu to us and share with us some info on the restaurant. We enjoyed chatting with her a bit too about our trip. The place is a lot bigger than it looks on the outside. Nice rustic interior with a classy bar in the center of the restaurant. They also have merch for sale. We started with the bison potstickers and they were fabulous! My oldest was craving some sushi so she ordered the tuna poke tacos. I thought they were pretty good, but she was a bit underwhelmed by them. For the main course, I went with one of the specials for the evening: the 6 oz Marbled Meats bacon-wrapped sirloin with herb-roasted potatoes, honey-braised carrots and truffled-gouda mornay. Morgan explained that Marbled Meats is a local and well-respected ranch, so I had to go with this! So glad I did! I didn't really care for the mornay on top of the steak, because it kind of took away from how incredible the steak was. It seriously was like butter--so delicious! My youngest got the smoke stack burger with tater tots. She loved her burger, but didn't really care for the tater tots. My oldest got the bison strip steak and loved it. Happy to see they had some nonalcoholic fun beverages too. I went with an Upside Dawn Athletic Brewing nonalcoholic beer. My oldest got the agua Fresca and my youngest got a draft root beer. Good meal and good experience. This was between 4 and 5 stars. I sat at the bar and the service was great at the start. Super quick to get the first drink and food order. My server knew the special menu, regular menu and drinks very well. I ordered the bison patty melt and tots for the meal and the Bridger Hazy IPA for the drink. The bartender recommended the IPA and it was excellent. The homemade tots were great. A shredded potato in the middle, nice and creamy and crunchy exterior. Feedback was there were only 5 on the plate. Definitely could use more. The bison patty met was perfectly cooked. A lot of folks overcook and dry out the bison. It was perfectly medium and juicy. Feedback would be a little char on the patty would be great. The service really tailed off in the end, it was not super busy and they had about 5 servers behind the bar. I sat there for at least 15 min until another bar tender asked if I wanted another brew and my server came about 5 to 10 later to attend to things. read more

I stopped in on a Friday night and it was hopping. There was about a 25 minute wait for a table for 2 but I was able to grab a drink at the bar while I waited. The place is busy and loud. Our waiter was friendly and good overall. I ordered the swordfish. The food took close to 45 minutes to come out and when it did, mine was cold. When I informed the waiter, he was apologetic and was able to get me another plate relatively quickly. The manager also came by and was apologetic as well. The second plate was great. I think my original plate just got lost in the mix. I won't hold that against them considering how busy they were. I'd definitely come back. read more

I cannot stress enough, how amazing this place was. My family and I sat outside and were right away given menus and food choices. Our server was Maddie and she was intuitive to any allergies or food preferences that our family might have had. Then the manager even came by to let me know that, although I ordered the poke ( which was amazing by the way), that came with wontons, the wontons were fried in the same oil as the pork food..( I told Maddie that I don't eat pork products). That not only did the manager give me alternatives and options instead of the wontons, but he also made sure that I had any other additional allergies. The beer my husband had was spot on and he said it was one of the best beers he has ever had. Definitely worth the drive and the wait to sit outside if necessary. But as a tip... I've been here many times. The vibes are great. My sister's companion Hamilton enjoyed his experience watching the World Cup. The food is pretty good-- the meat definitely tastes different here in Montana. Our server was very helpful and explained the menu very well. Would be a good spot for a date night. Our party of 4 ate here for our first meal in Montana. The place is much bigger inside than how it looked outside. When we came in at around 4pm, there seemed to be plenty of tables available but after an hour, the place quickly filled up. Vibes/Service: Parking lot in the back and it seemed there was some street parking available as well. Many, many tables available with bar seating as well. It can certainly fit a larger group. Great service from our server. Checked on us often and filled up our waters. Food: Because it was our first meal here, we wanted to try out their staple dishes. -Bison Potstickers ($16): 5 pieces topped with mango and garlic chili sauce and served with some coleslaw. Rich and filling, paired well with the sauce. Would order this again! -Bison Patty Melt ($22): it was my first time eating Bison, the waiter suggested medium rare. It looked more red than I usually like but it actually was juicy and tasty-- I guess this is the difference between a regular beef patty. I've been to Montana ale works several times and it's quickly become one of my favorite places for dinner in Bozeman. It has it all: a vast, delicious menu, excellent service and fantastic ambiance! I love the salads and the fact that they offer tofu as a protein, which makes it accessible for every dietary preference. The Asian ramen salad is my absolute favorite. It has such a distinct umami flavor that I love! I most recently had the house made veggie burger and it really hit the spot. It was so tender, flavorful and nutritious. The fries were also amazing with a perfect texture and so flavorful. I love that it used to be a train station and that it still has a historic feel despite also feeling upscale. Had a delicious dinner last night at Montana Ale Works. Everything was perfect! The hosts were friendly and thoughtful, our server was available and knowledgeable, and our experience went really well. We started with appetizers, the tater tots were a surprise. Handmade, with a ranch style dipping sauce, these were not your typical "cook from a bag" tots that we were expecting. The Dan San Noodles (special) were incredible. Spicy, complex. And perfectly cooked pork belly. The kids menu was a delightful surprise, not just your typical chicken fingers and fries (though I think they might have those as well). Great place! Entrees are a bit expensive, but sandwiches are delicious and reasonable. A hack is that any patty can be swapped into any sandwich. I got the elk burger as described on the menu and it was great! The fries are some of the best I've ever had. There is also a nice selection of beers. I recommend the huckleberry cream ale. Last chance exactly as imagined. I used to come here for special occasions but the value just got strangely out of whack for me. This opinion is based on 10+ visits over time at a variety of times. Always less than 4 people in the group. After this last visit I'm just not going back. My steak frites was 3 sliced pieces of some rump round or something. Tough as hell and literally 3 bites on top of washed out fries. I was so frustrated I just went to eat and it was so tough I actually thought I was going to choke and die on site. Service was really weird. Literally a different person for each stage (including water service) which can be a bit confusing for the diner if random people just keep approaching. Honestly I just won't be back. Food sucked, portions were beyond tiny and the service made me feel awkward while randomly approaching. Very unusual but I'm never going back. Came in here with a large party of 12 boys at a bachelor party - and as overwhelming as that could have been for our server, he remained incredibly calm, patient, and was super accommodating. A bit pricier than I would have liked for what was seemingly higher-end bar food, but honestly there were a few menu items that I found quite unique and delicious - specifically the bison potstickers and the elk burger (see photos) - both items I would never find back home and that helped justify the cost a little bit. I went to Montana Ale Works with the thought in my mind that they were a brewery. But it's more of a place where there are lots of guest taps from breweries that are local, further away but still in Montana and a few drinking options from out of state. This wasn't a problem for me as I could then play "catch up" on my list in which I had every intention of working on as far as craft breweries go. I got a taster set, a trio of three different craft beers and then I also had a a craft root beer as part of the set. All very good! But I was long overdue for a bite to eat. I pondered as to what I wanted but since I love tacos so much that is what I went with. But these weren't your typical tacos. The meat was braised bison and it was very good. I am not used to having this kind of meat and it was different but still very enjoyable... after all it was tacos! The wait staff here were super nice, informative and whatever they didn't know with my craft beer questions for the area they went and found somebody to find out. Absolutely amazing!!! Made reservations as we were coming into town for the night. As it was our first night/visit to MT, and was able to get in. The place is almost like a small old warehouse, and great open high roof restaurant with high tops, booths and a bar with TVs. Our server was great besides the small comment at the end due to a comment made about service, which I can respect but at the same time not something you say. However high credit for the kitchen as food was fast from appetizers, salads/soups, the kids meals first before our main courses. We had a party of 6, two of us got the bison steaks as I as for the waiters recommendations, and it was absolutely amazing, tender and the cooks to perfection. I had the chipotle Brussels sprouts which I would have more chipotle flavor to them for my taste. My Wife and mother got burgers, in which both enjoyed theirs, specially the garlic fries and sauce the Mrs had with hers. Montana Ale works was a stop during our vacation to Bozeman and it was excellent! It was our favorite restaurant we ate at during our vacation. We were greeted by an older gentleman outside who was so friendly and had the personality to be a host. We waited 10ish minutes for a spot outside and it was well worth it. There weren't many bugs. The server also asked if we needed bug spray which I thought was very nice! Our server was very nice and attentive. She was outgoing and talkative and had good humor for the job! For an appetizer we ordered the bison potstickers. They were great! Flavorful and cooked perfectly. The wonton wraps had the perfect crunch. For my entree I had the bacon wrapped bison. WOW is all I have to say! It was incredible! So good that I wanted to eat there one more time before we left to get it again! The bison was great, the mashed potatoes were flavorful and the vegetables were seasoned deliciously! I loved the carrots with the seasoning they used. I cleaned my plate very quickly! My boyfriend had the duck entree and he also cleaned his plate... He said it was some of the best duck he has ever had. For drinks he had the huckleberry ale and I had a huckleberry lemonade. We both enjoyed our drinks. The huckleberry ale is a little sour and tart but it was good once the ice started watering it down a little bit! Lastly, we had the apple crisp dessert. It had one small scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. It was warm and true goodness! This meal was a 10/10. I wish we lived closer because Montana Ale Works is a gem.
