A coworker brought Mustang Donuts in for us this morning. I had a chocolate glazed donut, which is my donut of choice. This tasted just like any other yeast donut I have had. This was nothing spectacular but the donut was still tasty. I tried a bite of the regular cake donut and it was a little dry. However, with the location, this is super close to my office. I was able to walk there on a warm October day and order a variety of donuts. I saw the Red, White & Blue donut and knew I had to get that one. Beyond the fact that it was a total insta-worthy donut, I was so impressed by the flavor and texture. The icing was incredible - it tasted like the icing you put on a cake or cupcake. It was still warm and completely melted in my mouth! Prices are very reasonable, too. Just remember - it's cash only! Luckily, there's a Wells Fargo and Chase Bank nearby if you need to go to an ATM. Kenny started Mustang Donuts ages ago when he also started Ken's Donuts in Austin...seems they won't let you use Longhorn and Bevo hap-hazardly. He ran the shops while going to law school. Once a successful lawyer he hired managers to run the well loved neighborhood shops, and eventually sought out folks who would love them as much as he did, and sold them. Not much has changed from year to year, except the faces behind the counter. All the time and effort Kenny put into opening these donut shops, tasting the different brand so of batter etc, paid off. Dallas Observer ranks Mustang Donuts as the best donut in town. I've been going there since 1986. *kicks soap box to middle of room and climbs on top* And when Dunkin Freaking Donuts opens in the spot where 'the MAN' tossed Balls Burgers out of business, I will still be going to Mustang Donuts. Donut Sunday!! This place is delicious!! I come here EVERY Sunday not only for myself but for my coworkers and customers at my work! Everyone looks forward to the donuts (glazed, chocolate and sprinkled) and it is always the best! I've tried 3-4 places on Sunday's before I found this gem and I will never go anywhere else! They are always super friendly! One thing to know is line is usually out the door but it's worth the wait because it goes by really fast! It's on campus so I expected a lot of college kids and it's actually more families than anything. I'm notorious for not having cash so I always have to go to the ATM but there's one walking distance. Donuts are homemade with real homemade icing. A few bites and you are sick full floating on cloud 9 donut heaven. Once you eat homemade ecstasy you can't even look at store bought or chain donuts in the eye. Someone brought Dunkin Donuts to work and it tasted like garbage compared to Mustang. I ate one quarter of the chain Donut, threw it in the trash and vowed never to commit Donut adultery again. No scarlet A for me, I want a big homemade dripping with thick icing letter 'M' for mustang on my chest. Just to give you a lil background, I live in the neighborhood and often ran past this joint and smirked at the 'screw your health' donut line goers. But after sharing one with Ma and Sis, I know why donut party line goers are all smiling and screwing their health. These babies sell like Hotcakes for a reason and are worth the calories. read more

The best donut joints stay busy. This not only tells you that people love them, but also that the donut turnover rate is sufficient to prevent you from getting donuts that have been sitting out for hours. Mustang donuts may just be one of the busiest donut joints I have ever seen. I'm sure it is a function of what is taking place on a given morning at SMU, but I have been when the line is out the door and filling up the sidewalk out front. The apple fritters may be the best in the world. They are a little flatter than your average fritter, but they are have a diameter the size of a dinner plate. This thinness allows for each bite to be the perfect ratio of crispy, sweet fried outer dough and light and fluffy apple laced inner dough. These things are dreamy. The hot plain glazed are the next best thing on my list. They have a similar flavor as a Krispy Kreme donut but the frosting is a thicker, sticky consistency. Yummers. Other donuts I have had are pretty standard. Good but not great. Overall though, a great donut shop with some of the jolliest women running it I have ever met. PS- Cash only. read more

Blueberry cake donuts for the win! I'm going to remember to tower up a dozen of Mustang's blueberry cake donuts as a tiered cake next year on my birthday. Hallelujah I've finally found THE cake donut. When I took a bite out of the oh so sweet blueberry donut I swear there would have been a ray of light shining down with angels singing "Hallelujah"....goodness gracious that little thing was so good. The one thing that I can commend them on is how perfectly they glazed the donut. It doesn't flake off like most donut places do when I take a bite into it. It's quite embarrassing when all the glaze falls into your lap making you look like a barbaric donut eater. The glaze is perfectly portioned with the donut making it not too sweet. I'm a HUGE fam of the blueberry cake and it will definitely remain to be on the top of my most delicious donut list. Ive tried the different selections of their donuts but this one is by far my favorite. The only downside is you have to get there extremely early in order to get your hands on these little tykes. I gave it five stars based on 12 years of dedicated consumption back in the 70's and 80's. When I think of the best donuts in the world, I think of Mustang Donuts. I have no idea if they still stand up - but I hope they do. Mustang set my donut standards. Growing up, we went in almost every weekend. Here's my main memory: standing in line - staring at the high school sports team photos, at the front of the line my mom answering (correctly) the trivia question, the crestfallen look in the counter folks' eyes who thought surely this time she would be stumped, and her always pure delighted surprise (usually with a "YES!" single fist pump) at answering the question correctly. Mustang knows how to do it right, and you can tell because they've been open for so many years in a shopping center where small businesses drop like flies. Awesome donuts, friendly service, and it has that community feel on Saturday mornings when people from all walks of upper-middle-class Caucasian-ness gather to enjoy the food. My only issue: they close at noon. I oft crave donuts between noon and 5am the next morning, so I'm left feeling sad and donut-less.
